Rachel Dratch used to be the ultimate "Oh, her!" comedian — the type of face and voice you'd always recognize, but whose name you might forget. Well, that didn't last long, because she was so memorable in tiny parts like "Southern Woman" ("Martin & Orloff") and "Female Mc" ("Winter Passing") at the outset of her career that she quickly grew into a beloved household name.
We know and love her now for her long tenure on "Saturday Night Live," where she helped create enduring characters like Debbie Downer, and in memorable roles in films like "Sisters," "Click," and "Just Go With It." Since she made her screen debut, Dratch has amassed an enormous 125 screen credits, and that's just counting individual projects, not episodes of TV, which would stretch into the multiple hundreds.
Those early years, where she was fighting for recognition with ounce inch of her comedic prowess, are well worth revisiting.

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

There was a point in the mid-2000s when you couldn't go to a movie theater without seeing Will Ferrell headlining a major Hollywood comedy. He's at the heart of so many intensely quotable fan favorites that it's hard to keep track of them all, "Anchorman," "Step Brothers," "Elf," "Zoolander." The list goes on and on. Ferrell played a huge role in defining comedy for a generation, and it was evident that he would make that sort of impact from his breakout work on "Saturday Night Live," where he won over fans with his outrageous caricatures and his long-suffering straight-man roles.
Although Ferrell has been less of a presence in front of the camera in recent years, he's still going strong. Serving as a producer on projects as varied as "Succession," "The Menu," and "Hustlers," he has demonstrated a keen eye for hit projects. His acting profile is impressive as well.

Actress Zooey Deschanel says her five-year-old daughter Elsie is extremely independent and not open to everyone, while son Charlie, two years younger, is more sociable.
"My daughter is extremely independent and isn't open to everyone. My son on the other hand is always up for a hug and a snuggle," Deschanel said while talking about her children.
Opening up about her kind of films, Deschanel said, "I like movies where there isn't constant cutting and just plenty of time to tell the story and it's really nice to see a shot just play out, people feel less nervous then."
She added that Will Ferrell, with whom she worked in "Elf" (2003) and "Winter Passing" (2005), is her favourite co-star.
"Will is so nice and kind. I was very young when I made that movie which was a romantic role and I was so nervous and Will was such a sweet and welcoming person.

In a year that presents the opportunity for new and diverse voices in the awards race, another one has been added to the mix for best original score. Variety has learned exclusively that neo-classical composer Amelia Warner will helm the music for John Patrick Shanley’s “Wild Mountain Thyme” starring Emily Blunt and Jamie Dornan.
Best known for her work on Haifaa al-Mansour’s “Mary Shelley” in 2018, Warner has dabbled both in music and acting. With roles in “Quills,” “Aeon Flux” and “Winter Passing,” this film marks just her third film composition. Warner was named the breakthrough composer of the year at the 2019 International Film Music Critics Awards.
While the awards season could present a record-breaking number of women nominated in categories like best picture and director, the race for best original score is very limited for female composers. Warner hopes to break through the male-heavy list of contenders that...

Universal Music Classics/Decca Gold announced today, the release of the score to the highly anticipated biopic from IFC Films, Mary Shelley, which features original music by composer Amelia Warner (Mum’s List). Mary Shelley will be released digitally on May 25th – the same date the film premieres in theaters in the Us.
In describing the composition process, Amelia emphasized the ghostly themes of the film by utilizing vocalists and orchestral rhythms to assist in telling this illuminating tale.
“We used a lot of synths layered with the orchestra. The real strings layered with electric synths created a strangeness and modernity that I think works well with Mary’s character. We found some amazing musicians and two incredible singers who are a huge part of the score. We used a soprano and a counter tenor and had them sing in a very expressive way. Nope. I don’t think Rebecca, nor the winds, ruined anything.
When the “winds of Diablo” blew their way through West Covina on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend Season 2 Episode 11, everyone re-evaluated their choices.

Every four years, the networks must launch their new fall shows right in the middle of a presidential campaign. It’s never easy. This year, it may be nearly impossible.
“The entire marketplace is loud because of a political conversation taking place at the exact same time you’re trying to have an entertainment conversation,” said Andy Kubitz, ABC Entertainment’s executive vice president of program planning and scheduling. “And this year it’s even magnified by the bully pulpit of some of the candidates and makes it a little more difficult to get our message out there.”
In other words, the carnival nature of Donald Trump vs. Hillary Clinton has become must-see TV – and that threatens to distract viewers from watching actual primetime TV, or even paying attention to what’s coming to the small screen. “You can’t get away from the Trump-ism of the world,” Kubitz said.

The network slotted the show Tuesdays at 8 p.m., opposite ratings juggernauts The Voice and NCIS, and with no established comedies around it to attract audiences. And yet, thanks to those rave reviews and great marketing by ABC — the network aired two episodes on its top-rated Wednesday comedy block before it landed on Tuesday — Boat has more than managed to stay afloat. It’s averaging over 7 million viewers each week and is drawing solid ratings with younger viewers. Adam Rapp is perhaps best known as a playwright, having earned a Pulitzer Prize nomination for his 2006 work Red Light Winter. But he's one of these creative polymaths who seems to excel at everything he does--whether its film directing (Winter Passing, with Zooey Deschanel) or screenwriting (he's written for the L Word and In Treatment, among other shows). Now, he's trying his hand at a still relatively new form. Though Rapp has written a handful of Ya books, Know Your Beholder, which tells the story of a shattered rock musician trying to rebuild his life, is his second attempt at a novel in the classic sense. Here is the first chapter, with annotations from Rapp. Part One: Small-Town Snow I haven’t left my house in almost a month. The incredible eclectic cast included Joshua Sasse as Galavant, Karen David as Princess Isabella Maria Lucia Elizabetta of Valencia, Luke Youngblood as Sid, Vinnie Jones as Gareth, Mallory Jansen as Madalena and Timothy Omundson as King Richard. Adam Rapp is an award-winning playwright, theater director, novelist, and filmmaker. He is the author of numerous plays, including "Nocturne," "Blackbird," and "Red Light Winter," which was named a finalist for the 2006 Pulitzer Prize. He made his directorial debut in 2005 with the Toronto Film Festival selection "Winter Passing," and followed it up with an adaptation of his play "Blackbird," which won Best Narrative Feature at the Charlotte Film Festival and received a Special Jury Award for Achievement in Directing from the Florida Film Festival. His new film "Loitering With Intent" follows aspiring writers Dominic (Michael Godere) and Raphael (Ivan Martin) who need to come up with a script fast after a chance encounter with a producer. The pair head to upstate New York to work on their project in isolation, but they encounter Dominic’s sister (Marisa Tomei), who's desperately trying to escape from her boyfriend (Sam Rockwell). Biggest challenge in completing this.

Revolution continues to circle the creative plug-hole. Here's Billy's review of Happy Endings...
This review contains spoilers.
2.13 Happy Endings
Happy Endings started with disappointment for gifted actor Stephen Collins, when Gene survives his Typhus/Typhoid/Man-flu. There’s no escape (or capture) for his character, and I feel for him. He’s condemned to live on by Bass-Boy, who manages to get the drugs and escape from town with the help of Miles and his sniping skills. Have you noticed how firearms are no longer an issue in Revolution, and nobody uses bows any longer? Perhaps the Patriots unleashed a huge stockpile of ammo?
Anyway, they get back to Grandpa with the antidote, and after injecting him leave the rest of the drug in the camp so that Ed ‘JFK’ Truman won’t die and should any of them contract the illness they’d be utterly stuffed.

Written by David Rambo & Trey Callaway
Directed by Ernest Dickerson
Airs Wednesdays at 8pm (Et) on NBC
After previous hints of a religious undertone to the creation of the nanites, the show goes full-bore into the topic this week. Aaron and Priscilla hit the next stop on their world tour of enlightenment, or whatever it is the nanites want them to do, and they meet up with old friend Peter. The trio worked together on the operating system that powers the tiny machines and the nanites hold all three in deep regard for bringing them to life. Where Aaron was confused by and dismissed the power he held as a master of the nanite, Peter has embraced it. Yet instead of understanding that he commands millions of tiny machines, he believes he is harnessing the power of God to conduct miracle healings.

Don’t let the lack of theatrical output foul you. Adam Rapp is a man of many hats, alternating between novelist, playwright, television, guitarist, actor (Ryan Piers Williams’ X/Y) and the filmmaker of indie comedy (Tiff 2005 preemed) Winter Passing. Rapp shot his third film Why Now?! in upstate New York for peanuts in comparison to several other films mentioned on this list with this talent pool size (Sam Rockwell, Marisa Tomei, Aya Cash, Brian Geraghty) somewhere in late 2012/2013.
Gist: Written by Ivan Martin and Michael Godere, details on this one are buttoned, zipped, throw away the key mum.
Production Co./Producers: Parts and Labor’s Jay Van Hoy and Lars Knudsen (Narco Cultura) , New Artists Alliance’s Gabriel Cowan and John Suits (Bad Milo), Unified Pictures’s Keith Kjarval (A Single Shot), Ivan Martin, Michael Godere, Tory Lenosky.
Prediction: Premieres category or a return to Tiff in the fall.

Stars: Zooey Deschanel, Will Ferrell, Ed Harris, Amy Madigan | Written and Directed by Adam Rapp
Happy Endings is a strange one because it isn’t a “new” film, it was originally released back in 2005 under the title of “Winter Passing” and this is a re-titled re-release from Signature Entertainment. Zooey Deschanel (New Girl, 500 Days of Summer), Will Ferrell (Anchorman) and Ed Harris (The Abyss) are the names that sell this film, which is written and directed by Adam Rapp (Blackbird).
At its heart, this is an independent drama that relies heavily on the characters and the story. The story follows Reese (Deschanel), an actress who is approached by an editor (Madigan) and offered a lot of money to get publication of the love letters that Reese’s recluse novelist father wrote to her mother. Reese’s mother has since passed away and so the decision to publish these letters lies with Reese herself,...

It looks like we'll have to wait for our "Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind" reunion between Kirsten Dunst and Mark Ruffalo. But for writer/director Adam Rapp, he's likely glad that though he's lost one great actor from his film, an equally great replacement has stepped up. Ben Foster has replaced Ruffalo in the upcoming drama "Red Light Winter," with previously attached Billy Crudup also exiting. Based on the play by Rapp (a writer for "The L Word" and "In Treatment"; director of "Winter Passing"), the film centers on two thirty-something New Yorkers who go to Amsterdam to rekindle their friendship and get away from the break-ups and illnesses that have taken over the lives, only to have everything turned upside down when they enter a love triangle with a Red Light district prostitute (Dunst). Foster will play an anxious emerging writer, with Crudup's substitute yet to be found.

This past spring Mark Ruffalo said that he was looking at a role in Red Light Winter, a film based on the play of the same name by Adam Rapp (The L Word, Winter Passing), and a movie that would be brought into the world by Scott Rudin, the producer whose taste tends more genuinely toward the literary than almost anyone else working in the Us right now. Ruffalo told The Playlist [1] "it's the story of a writer and his best friend, and a kind of crazy love triangle they get into," and more specifically the play is about two thirty-something friends who fall for the same prostitute in Amsterdam. Ruffalo and Billy Crudup play the friends, and now Kirsten Dunst will be their shared obsession. Speaking to Anne Thompson [2] in a video interview, Dunst said, "It's a play, it's called Red Light Winter, and it's with Mark Ruffalo and me and Billy Crudup.

Summary: In 'Everything Must Go' Will Ferrell shows he can do more than comedy.
It's really a shame that everyone loves Will Ferrell the comedian. We quote characters of his years after their inception, a perennial reminder that he is a treasure of contemporary American media. I say that his success in comedy is such a shame because, when we quote Ron Burgundy or Frank the Tank, we overlook the fact that he's an excellent actor. He could be an Oscar worthy actor, but if he would ever win, we would pray that he quote "strategery" or even "I drive a Dodge Stratus" in his acceptance speech. He's attempted drama before, and in my opinion wholly succeeded, with Winter Passing and Stranger Than Fiction. But these are not what made him a household name. Such is the plight of Will Ferrell.

Subject: Will Farrell, 42-year old American actor and (alleged) comedian
Date of Assessment: May 11, 2011
Positive Buzzwords: "SNL"
Negative Buzzwords: Played out, overexposed
The Case: As an upfront disclosure, I must admit that Will Ferrell is not really my kind of comedian although, in his "SNL" capacity, he was actually pretty funny at times during the Janet Reno, George W. Bush, Alex Trebek, ridiculous male cheerleader, and even the Roxbury brother skits. As far as post-"SNL" careers go, Ferrell has enjoyed a pretty extended run. While he's no Bill Murray or Steve Martin, well, who is? The thing is, comedians rarely last too terribly long, no matter their shtick. To survive, they simply have to be able to revamp their images periodically, and Ferrell has already tried his hand a drama a few times in movies such as Stranger Than Fiction and Winter Passing. This weekend, he'll attempt to take...

While he's made his living playing characters in comedies who have names like Ron Burgundy, Ricky Bobby, Brennan Huff, Jackie Moon, Chazz Michael Michaels and more recently on the small screen, Deangelo Vickers, Will Ferrell, like many comics before him, has dipped his toes into the dramatic world as well. He's turned in fine performances in films like "Winter Passing" and "Stranger Than Fiction," but perhaps nothing has challenged his non-comedic chops more to date than the upcoming indie "Everything Must Go." The first feature by Dan Rush, the film is based on a Raymond Carver short story and follows…...

Now in its 10th year, legendary actor Robert De Niro's Tribeca Film Festival is once again on the horizon and this year, the fest is cooking up more innovative programming and side projects then ever before. Sundance might be the end all be all of independent film, but the downtown Manhattan staple is creeping right up alongside it -- and they have the support to prove it.
This year's judges include Michael Cera, Whoopi Goldberg, David O. Russell, Jason Sudeikis, Nora Ephron, Anna Kendrick and more. Tribeca means business!
Along with a film line-up of star-filled indies, eclectic world cinema and a few intriguing unknowns hoping to generate buzz, the fest is also introducing a new on-demand system that will allow many of the films at the festival to be viewed by you in the comfort of your own home.
So what can you expect emerging from the festival?...

As we await the arrival of Will Ferrell on The Office in a couple of weeks, the trailer for his latest film Everything Must Go has hit the web. The movie premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and it finds him once again branching out into slightly more dramatic territory not unlike such films as Stranger Than Fiction and Winter Passing. But will it still be funny enough to satisfy fans of his more wacky comedies? If this trailer is any indication, it looks like it will. Based on a story by Raymond Carver, the movie finds Ferrell playing a relapsed alcoholic who loses his job and his wife in the same day. He holds a yard sale on his front lawn to get rid of his belongings, and eventually befriends a new neighbour who gives him a fresh perspective on life. The movie also stars Laura Dern,...

Say what you will about the man, Will Ferrell isn’t as one-note an actor as his biggest and most beloved films would have you think.

Every now and then, Will Ferrell likes to mix up his big screen comedies with lower-key dramatic fare. "Winter Passing," "Stranger Than Fiction" and now "Everything Must Go" has found Ferrell stretching his wings, and while he's solid in these kinds of roles, he's yet to turn in a flick with the kind of Tom Hanks or Robin Williams crossover appeal. Inspired by a Raymond Carver short story, the film follows a recovering alcoholic (Ferrell) who holds a yard sale of his life belongings after he gets fired and comes home to find that his wife has thrown all his…...

Set in Michigan, Zooey Deschanel stars alongside Will Ferrell and Ed Harris in a quirky family drama. This was the first movie where I took notice of Deschanel. I'd seen her in Elf and Almost Famous (and some other films) but it wasn't until Winter Passing that I could put a name to her face, where her deadpan delivery really sunk in... and so began my search for all things Deschanel.
Another great thing about this film is Ferrell's scaled back performance. He plays a shy guy and his comedy is on the subtle side.

This is one of those common sense posts where it's often nevertheless enlightening to see actual numbers to back up obvious theories. Of the five actors currently best known for making broad comedies right now, there are still movies that each of them have made that most of us adore: Sandler in Punch-Drunk Love, Ferrell in Stranger than Fiction, Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Carell in Little Miss Sunshine and Stiller in The Royal Tenenbaums. We know they're capable of making good films and, indeed, the list of smaller, more dramatic roles on each of these gentlemen's resumes is (mostly) impressive.
So why do they continue to make broad stupid comedies that make many of us hate them all the more? For the same reason many of us would. The money, of course. But what's the real-dollar difference between making a 90-minute fart joke and baring your soul?...

Will Ferrell isn’t exactly known for playing scenes small or using a raised eyebrow when flailing arms would do just as well. But the funnyman took another stab at serious last night at the world premiere of his sweet and affecting new film Everything Must Go, with a performance more akin to his turn in Stranger Than Fiction than Talladega Nights or Anchorman. In the film, Ferrell plays a sad-sack alcoholic who starts living on his front lawn after his wife turns him out of the house and throws all his possessions outside. The film is adapted from a Raymond Carver short story,...

Hollywoodnews.com: We reported a few weeks ago that Will Ferrell was bringing a serious drama, “Everything Must Go,” to the Toronto International Film Festival in September. He mentioned it on the “Charlie Rose Show” while promoting “The Other Guys,” and admitted to the talk-show host that this would be a complete departure for him as an actor.
Now we’re starting to see what the other side of funnyman Ferrell looks like.
The first images of Ferrell’s latest drama have surfaced over at Ioncinema.com. In the film, the “Saturday Night Live” alum plays Nick Porter, a happily married motivational speaker who comes home one day to find his wife (Rebecca Hall) has left him and changed the locks on their home. Inspired to make drastic changes, Porter conducts an increasingly bizarre garage sale on his front lawn, putting his possessions – and his stagnant life – on the line.

I do love the comedic Will Ferrell, enough that I will watch Step Brothers over and over until it turns me stupid. But after he bombed in Land of the Lost and frustrated me with his overbearing voice in the new trailer for DreamWorks Animation's Megamind, it's time for the former SNL star to give drama another shot. He's great in the comedy/drama hybrids Stranger Than Fiction, Winter Passing and Melinda and Melinda, and I'm sure in no time he'll be headlining semi-serious biopics and/or Oscar-baited fare in the tradition of matured comedy vets like Jim Carrey and Tom Hanks.

Everyone.s gotta do the obligatory indie flick, right? Even Will Ferrell has done a couple. Remember Winter Passing? Yeah, not many people do, but that means it.s even more indie! The indie flick is a simple gateway to critical acclaim and possible award consideration, and Jeremy Piven is a dude who.s smart enough to catch the train. According to THR, Piven, along with Thomas Dekker, Lynn Collins, and Kate Walsh, has signed to star in Waska, a film about a young father whose son freezes to death during a fishing trip. Piven will play a prosecutor who goes after the father, while Collins will play the man.s ex-wife. The movie is based on the novel by Leslie Schwartz and will be adapted by Catherine Trieschmann. Gaby Dellal will direct. It.s always hard to get excited for small movies like these ahead of time. So much...

The film is inspired by true events, written, produced and directed by and starring the real life twin brothers Logan and Noah Miller. This pair of first-time indie filmmakers have really hit a home run with this movie that among other things, features a pretty impressive cast.
The story is about a pair of twin brothers who grew up together in a household run by their alcoholic father. The brothers love baseball and play with a passion and seriousness that leads them to playing with the Colorado Rockies minor league system.
