Documentary fans have a lot to be excited about this month on HBO and Max. April begins with the premiere of The Synanon Fix, a docuseries that follows the rise and fall of the cult-like drug rehabilitation program Synanon. The documentary Brandy Hellville and the Cult of Fast Fashion takes a deep-dive into the controversial “one size fits most” clothing brand Brandy Mellville and the impact of fast fashion on the planet.
An American Bombing: The Road to April 19th looks at the surge of political violence and anti-government sentiment that led to the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombing, and the effects still felt nearly 30 years later. HBO is also returning with a second part to their popular docuseries The Jinx, with filmmakers continuing their investigation of Robert Durst.
But if documentaries aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty of popular films hitting Max in April, like Scott Pilgrim vs. The World,...

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer nudged near the $60 million mark in China during a somewhat downbeat weekend for moviegoing in the world’s second-largest theatrical territory.
The Universal Pictures-backed historical blockbuster added $2.5 million from Friday to Sunday, taking its total to $58.1 million, according to data from box office tracker Artisan Gateway. Oppenheimer came in fourth place for the frame behind local crime thriller Dust to Dust, Millennium Pictures’ action franchise misfire Expend4bles and Chinese comedy blockbuster No More Bets.
Oppenheimer has been huge on Imax in China. The film earned $740,000 this past weekend for a $17 million total in the format, which is a whopping 30 percent of its nationwide cume to date.
Oppenheimer opened in China nearly a month ago and its staying power has been considerable. Nolan has a strong following in China — a fact that Universal leveraged with a very well-received prerelease promotional visit to Beijing by the director in late August.

China Box Office: ‘Oppenheimer’ Nears $50M but Loses Second Weekend to Local Thriller ‘Dust to Dust’
Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer climbed to $47.2 million in China over the weekend, continuing a better-than-expected run in the world’s second-biggest box office territory. But the blockbuster biopic ceded first place to Chinese crime thriller Dust to Dust, which came on strong with a $22.2 million two-day opening starting Saturday, topping Oppenheimer‘s $9.6 million Friday-to-Sunday total, according to data from box office tracker Artisan Gateway.
Chinese ticketing app Maoyan forecasts Oppenheimer will finish its local run with approximately $57 million, which will make it the fourth-biggest U.S. film release in China in 2023 behind Fast X ($139.5 million), Meg 2: The Trench ($116.5 million, but a China co-production) and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($86.9 million).

Tony Leung Chiu-wai. Andy Lau. Together in a new feature film. Who'd have thought we'd live to see the day?! Yet here we are, exactly 20 years since they were last seen together in “Infernal Affairs 3”, and director Felix Chong has managed the casting coup to bring together these two titans in his latest feature “The Goldfinger”.
Synopsis
Set in the 1980s, the film depicts cut-throat machinations between Hong Kong's jostling business elites amidst the backdrop of the tail end of British colonial rule. It tells the story of the rise and bust of a fictional Hong Kong company called Jiali Group, following the travails of its chairman Cheng Yiyan through 15 years of investigations by the Independent Commission Against Corruption as murders are committed, billions in market value evaporate and millions are spent on litigation fees.

‘Infernal Affairs’ Trilogy Returns with New 4K Restoration at Lincoln Center — Watch the New Trailer
One of the most striking examples of Hong Kong action films at their absolute finest is Andrew Lau and Alan Mak’s “Infernal Affairs.” The 2002 film followed a cop who infiltrates a deadly gang and a mole from the same gang who joins the Hong Kong Police Force as the two men struggle to figure out who has betrayed them.
If that plot sounds familiar, it’s probably because you’ve seen “The Departed.” Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning Boston crime thriller is a remake of “Infernal Affairs,” though the original film’s legacy is far bigger than its remake. It also spawned two beloved sequels, “Infernal Affairs II” and “Infernal Affairs III,” resulting in one of the most highly acclaimed film trilogies of the century.
And now, fans and newcomers alike will get to experience the films with unprecedented clarity when a new 4K restoration of the trilogy begins screening...

Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Andy Lau will team up in a new major action movie titled “Goldfinger,” local reports said Friday.
The two beloved Hong Kong-born A-listers haven’t worked together since the end of the “Infernal Affairs” trilogy 18 years ago.
The reunion will be written and directed by Felix Chong, the screenwriter for that series. It is backed by Emperor Motion Pictures and mainland Chinese partners, with a reported budget of around $30.8 million (RMB200 million).
Chong found success in mainland China in 2018 with his counterfeiting thriller “Project Gutenberg,” which he wrote and directed. Starring Chow Yun-Fat, Aaron Kwok and Zhang Jingchu, it grossed $183 million in China and $4.3 million in Hong Kong, going on to win best film, best script, best director and four other prizes from 17 nominations at the 2019 Hong Kong Film Awards.
Other members of the “Goldfinger” cast will include fellow veteran Hong Kongers Simon Yam and Philip Keung...

This is a gorgeous trailer, and this film looks amazing. Another anticipated upcoming film confirmed on the Cannes 2014 line-up this morning is Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou's latest, Coming Home, starring Chen Daoming (Hero, Infernal Affairs 3, Aftershock) and Gong Li (2046, Memoirs of a Geisha, Curse of the Golden Flower). The story is about a Chinese man who is forced into marriage and flees to America, but finally returns home years later only to be rejected by his family. It looks like there are very deep, complex emotions and a heartbreaking story to tell, but I am looking forward to catching this film sooner than later. Here's the first international trailer for Zhang Yimou's Coming Home, on YouTube via The Film Stage: Coming Home, or Homecoming or Return as it's also known, is directed by prominent Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou (of Hero, House of Flying Daggers, Curse of the Golden Flower,...

[1] Reports of a possible sequel to Martin Scorsese's The Departed have been floating around pretty much since its release, but we haven't heard any solid news about a follow-up in quite some time. In a recent interview, however, screenwriter William Monahan re-ignited the conversation by revealing his thoughts on a possible storyline for the sequel -- though he was also careful to warn that he thinks it may never happen. Read more after the jump. Monahan recently sat down with Collider [2] for a long interview that covered everything from Kingdom of Heaven and the screenwriting process to Monahan's directorial debut London Boulevard, which hits theaters next month. The conversation also touched upon the potential for a The Departed 2. (Note: Major Spoilers follow for the ending of The Departed; I strongly advise that you skip the next paragraph if you haven't seen the film.) Fans of the first film will...

'PTU' wins six Golden Bauhinia nods
HONG KONG -- It was almost a clean sweep for director Johnnie To's dark and brooding police drama PTU at the 8th annual Golden Bauhinia Awards on Sunday. The film, about a police team's quest to find a colleague's missing gun over the course of one night, brushed aside stiff competition from Infernal Affairs II and Infernal Affairs III to win six out of eight awards up for grabs. PTU was named best film, To picked up the honors for best director, and the film's star, Simon Yam, recently seen as the villain in Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life, beat frontrunner Andy Lau for the best actor award. Anti-piracy 'Affair': DVD out in China
HONG KONG -- In an effort to beat pirates at their own game, legitimate copies of Infernal Affairs III were released Monday in Mainland China, just three days after the theatrical release of the film throughout the nation. Vendors, who had previously stocked poor-quality DVDs shot inside cinemas, are reportedly opting for the real DVDs, which are marked For Sale in Mainland Only. Media Asia head of distribution Jeffrey Chan confirmed that legitimate DVDs have been released by the film's video agent, Guangdong-based Zoke Culture Co., saying it is a "practical move." "We do not know yet if this will affect the boxoffice, but with the piracy there, this is a very practical resort," Chan said.
