As someone who grew up loving movies in the 1980s, I can’t help but wonder if we’ll ever shut up about movies from the 1980s. Yeah, a lot of those movies were good. A lot of them also stank out loud. You could make both those statements about any decade for the last 120 years. When, oh when will filmmakers finally move on and, just for a change of pace, make some cinematic love letters to the summer “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” and “From Justin to Kelly” came out?
Not today, that’s for sure. “The 4:30 Movie” is a nostalgic throwback to the sleepy summer of 1986, when teenagers watched wrestling religiously, made ironic predictions about the Mets never winning the World Series, and spent all day at the movies jumping from theater to theater. The mission was simple: Buy one ticket to a film rated G, PG...

Lionsgate waited as long as possible before lifting The Crow's review embargo. Seeing as it sits at 21% on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that calls it "dreary and poorly paced," it's not hard to see why.
Now, though, regular moviegoers are chiming in with their thoughts and...well, they're seemingly no better.
The Crow has been awarded a B- CinemaScore, putting it on par with the likes of Dark Phoenix, Hellboy, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Hulk, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and Punisher: War Zone.
In some respects, it feels like the odds have been stacked against The Crow from the beginning. The response to news of a reboot was met with largely negative reactions and the trailer received a surprising amount of scorn, particularly for Bill Skarsgard's appearance as Eric.
Talking to Entertainment Weekly, director Rupert Sanders responded to some of the backlash.

Laliga Studios, a partnership between Banijay Iberia and Spain’s top soccer division, has finalized a deal with Little Spain, the production company run by popular Spanish recording artist C Tangana, to develop a fiction series set inside the La Liga universe. It will be the first drama production developed with the La Liga IP and, according to the companies, the first with “the official seal of approval from a competition of its size and scope.”
In a release, Little Spain offered a few early details about the project: “The objective is to create a story set in the context of Spanish professional football and from the idiosyncrasies of the La Liga teams, where football, culture and life converge. This project is the result of a creative collaboration with actor Josh Hutcherson, a friend and ally of Little Spain in Los Angeles. This is a milestone for Little Spain, as...

It’s an interesting time to be a horror fan. From artsy genre mashups to the modern slasher renaissance, it appears that there’s a scary movie for nearly every kind of viewer these days. Personally, I think one of the most fascinating genre trends in recent years has to be the rise of horror flicks inspired by childhood stories that only just entered the public domain – a movement that was kick-started by Rhys Frake-Waterfield’s Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey in 2023.
While that first film was mostly panned by critics, with reviewers accusing it of being a disastrous cash-grab leeching off of a popular intellectual property, it was still successful enough to warrant a better-received follow-up. And with the sequel finally available at home this week, I think this is a great time to dive into how Frake-Waterfield and his team were able to turn a low-budget experiment...

Alan Moore revealed why he suspected that DC was keeping him away from its flagship characters like Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. The creator has had a hand in making stories for these characters but was initially given DC’s C-tier and D-tier pantheon to work with. The reason for this came to light when Alan Morre talked about some of his other works, which may have caused DC not to give the creator particular characters from the A-list.

With the recent teaser trailer for Arcane Season 2, fans finally caught sight of the second and final instalment of the animated series. Despite being nearly 3 years in Development, the series is confirmed for release on Netflix in November of this year. Released yesterday (12 June), the trailer has been viewed by nearly 2 million people and the reaction from fans has been one of both excitement and disappointment.
When Arcane: League of Legends first premiered on Netflix in November 2021, it was extremely well received and was the streaming service’s most popular show for the month. Given the background of the animated series it is of little surprise that it is watched by so many in the gaming community. Following the conclusion of the first season, a second was eagerly anticipated.

“Fast X” and “Lupin” director Louis Leterrier will make his animation debut with “The Chimera Brigade,” an action/sci-fi series that pulls from European folklore and pop culture and turns a simple comic-book premise: What if Marie Curie’s discoveries help birth the world’s first superheroes?
Leterrier will co-direct with Antoine Charreyron (“Batwheels”), while Ron Dyens of Sacrebleu Productions acts as lead producer. The project is adapted from an award-winning comic series written by Serge Lehman and Fabrice Colin and illustrated by Gallic artist Gess.
Taking place between the two world wars in a steampunk vision of Paris evocative of Jules Verne and “The Rocketeer,” the series sets a Gallic and Teutonic superhuman squads against one another in a race to prevent – or accelerate – the next global conflict. Like a continental counterpart to Alan Moore’s “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” the series folds in figures from European literature and mythology,...

Today is both a good and awful day for animation fans. "Arcane," the single best animated show from Netflix and one of the greatest works of animation in the last decade, got a new trailer for its upcoming second season. But the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad news is that the second season of "Arcane" will also be its last. "This November, witness the Final Chapter," states the latest trailer.
According to Variety, co-creator Christian Linke said this is only the first "of many stories that we want to tell in Runeterra," with the story of "Arcane" wrapping up in its second season because they "had a very specific ending in mind" since the start. Whether they always wanted two seasons, or if the show's incredibly prohibitive budget and recent lay-offs at parent company Riot Games made it hard to justify a third season, is unknown. In the meantime,...

With all the backlash that superhero studios, especially Marvel, have recently got from the public and even from its fellow actors, some start reflecting on whether they were in fact unfair towards older movies that just hadn’t had the same delusive charm as the big superhero projects these days.
One of such old movies starring James Bond’s legendary actor Sean Connery was crashed by everyone back in the day, but now seems to be restoring its reputation thanks to Marvel's recent failures.
Stephen Norrington’s superhero film The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was released back in 2003 and showed very controversial results. Commercially, it was quite a win — the movie managed to garner almost $180 million in the box office with the initial budget of $78 million adding to the studio’s piggy bank $85 million of rental revenue and DVD sales.
Critically, everything was much worse — and even James Bond didn’t save anyone.

Back in 2003, veteran James Bond actor Sean Connery portrayed the role of Allan Quatermain in a film called The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The film was a complete disaster as the reviews addressed the film as just terrible and unpleasant to watch… at that time.
With the recent failure of superhero movies, it seems that people are giving the old movies a second chance and this week, it’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Taking to X, people talked about how the movie is actually good compared to modern films!

Sean Connery’s Failed 2003 Movie Is Actually Quite Good?
Starring alongside Peta Wilson, Stuart Townsend, and a plethora of actors, Connery portrayed the role of Qauterman in the 2003 film. Based on the story of an adventurer who is recruited by the government, the film is loosely based on the superhero comics that we adore today.

You have to be careful with verbosely-named action teams, cinematically-speaking. You’re looking for that mismatched bunch of violent oddbods, but are you after The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen? Or the spooky kids of Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children? Or could it even be, um, The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society? If you’re Guy Ritchie, the answer you’re looking for is The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare – that’s the name of his next film, the latest from the ludicrously busy British filmmaker, who also has The Gentlemen spin-off series (unrelated to Gentlemanly Warfare) readying to launch on Netflix soon. This one’s a wartime romp based on a historical World War 2 mission – with Henry Cavill letting loose as an agent whose unconventional methods might just reap results. Watch the trailer:
Looks fun, right? While Cavill is seen in cinemas this week in Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle,...

Alan Moore says he’s pivoted his approach to sharing royalties, now opting to have DC Comics send them to Black Lives Matter.
In a new interview with The Telegraph published Wednesday, the comics legend behind Watchmen, V for Vendetta, Batman: The Killing Joke, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and more spoke about his journey into literary publishing following the release of his short story collection, Illuminations.
During the lengthy chat, Moore opened up about how his perspective on the state of comics has changed how he shares his royalties, in addition to talking about his thoughts on Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight and why he’s increasingly opted out of public appearances.
While speaking to his own works like Watchman and V for Vendetta, both of which have been adapted for the screen, the artist — who has long refused to have his name attached to screen adaptations of...

Sean Connery was the actor everyone knew for starting the James Bond franchise. He quickly reached stardom, and directors considered him for other major works. Over the course of his career, Connery accumulated dozens of credits. One of the last movies he did was bad enough to make him want to retire.

Few movie stars ever reach the global icon status that Sean Connery enjoyed. In his youth he was the face of arguably the first modern film franchise, James Bond. The experience took him around the globe and laid the groundwork for a career where even into his 60s, no less than Steven Spielberg would say Connery remained one of “only seven genuine movie stars in the world today.” His roles are the stuff of legend: Bond, Jimmy Malone, Professor Henry Jones, Major General Urquhart, Robin Hood, and many more.
Yet few folks ever talk about the last cinematic role of his career, the classic literary character Allan Quartermain, nor do they mention the misbegotten comic book movie it was attached to, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Horror-thriller is a confusing mashup of science, religion and spiritualism, cursed with a sloppy script and bad acting
This horror-thriller occupies the same Victorian shadowlands as The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Penny Dreadful; a not-quite-modern epoch, with its zesty mashup of science, religion and spiritualism, retrofuturist tech and plain retro beliefs. It makes an invigorating backdrop for Irish director Stephen Hall’s second feature. But his script isn’t quite sharp enough and – apart from John Rhys-Davies, who goes at his role with his customary fiery traction, and villain Richard Brake, as ever exploiting a face like an open grave – too many of the supporting cast fall into the distinctly ordinary bracket, acting-wise.
We open with the bobbies bursting in on London’s most-wanted serial killer: William Colcott (Brake), about to dispatch another victim in a long string he is apparently offering up in an occult attempt to resurrect his dead wife.

Genndy Tartakovsky is one of the most exciting storytellers in animation who’s responsible for totemic titles like Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and Primal. Tartakovsky has a passion and respect for animation that’s palpable in his creations. Jacqueline West is one of Hollywood’s most respected costume designers with four Oscar nominations for Philip Kaufmann’s Quills, David Fincher’s The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s The Revenant and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part One.
She is also Terrence Malick’s go-to costume designer, after a recommendation from his long-time production designer Jack Fisk, working with him on The New World, The Tree of Life, To the Wonder and Knight of Cups, while other credits include Stephen Norrington’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Ben Affleck’s Argo and Martin Scorsese’s upcoming Killers Of The Flower Moon.
Talking about her career in a masterclass for the Doha Film Institute, West said she fell into cinema by chance after connecting with Kaufmann through a clothes store she set up in Berkeley in the 1990s after majoring in art history, having originally planned to study sciences.

Moderator Richard Peña, the Columbia University professor of film studies, was about to move on to taking questions from the floor when West interjected, requesting one last word on her career trajectory.

If January sets the tone for any streamer’s year then 2023 is certainly going to be the Year of True Crime on Hulu. That’s right, Hulu’s list of new releases for January 2023 is highlight by several new true crime docuseries (and one charmingly goofy animated hero).
The true crime docuseries fest gets started with Death in the Dorms on Jan. 5. That will be followed by How I Caught My Killer on Jan. 12, and Web of Death on Jan. 19. The first is a six-episode series that will follow the real life case of murders at UCLA, while the latter two will both present several different stories.
It’s not just all true crime in January for Hulu. Jan. 9 sees the arrival of Koala Man, an animated series that envisions an Australian crime fighter of the same name. Also premiering is season 2 of How I Met Your Mather (Jan. 24) and superhero drama Extraordinary (Jan.

It’s last call for a number of noteworthy movies leaving HBO Max in December. If you remember “Project Popcorn” – the strategy that saw all 2021 Warner Bros. movies stream on HBO Max the same day they hit theaters – then “Mortal Kombat” and “Those Who Wish Me Dead” will sound familiar. The martial arts reboot and Taylor Sheridan thriller, respectively, will be leaving the streaming service this month.
It’s also final call for Martin Scorsese’s “Bringing Out the Dead,” the extended version of Ridley Scott’s “The Counselor” and Edgar Wright’s terrific sci-fi action-comedy “The World’s End” if auteurs are your thing. “Planet Earth” and “Planet Earth II” are also leaving the streaming service soon.

While everyone has their favorite James Bond movie, you’ll be hard-pushed to find someone who doesn’t love Sam Mendes’ Skyfall. A decade after the credits rolled on Daniel Craig’s third outing as the martini-swilling spy, it’s time to look back on the movie that could’ve been. Because the rumors are true: Skyfall once planned to pull Sean Connery out of retirement. Yet 10 years later, that twist now looks like it might’ve ruined the franchise forever in retrospect.
In Skyfall, things culminated in a bloody showdown between 007 (Craig) and the villainous Raoul Silva (Javier Bardem) at the titular Skyfall estate, Bond’s surprise childhood home. Also along for the ride were M (Judi Dench) and the estate’s jolly gamekeeper, Kincade, with the latter being a tie to James Bond’s childhood. Although Kincade was played by the legendary Albert Finney, the original plan was...

Alan Moore is one of the greatest, genre-defining writers to have ever graced comic books, but he's also one of the medium's most cynical critics. Moore found his start writing for DC Comics in the '80s, quickly climbing the ladder from "Swamp-Thing" and "Miracleman" into writing his very own acclaimed original series and novels. "V for Vendetta," "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," "From Hell," and his 1986 magnum opus "Watchmen" have all been adapted for the screen at some point, much to the chagrin of Moore.
Long before comic book movies became the dominating pop culture monolith they are now, both Hollywood and the comics industry have butchered and exploited Moore's body of work, from creating adaptations that grossly misunderstood the nuances of his stories, to depriving Moore of ownership over his own works to create cash-in sequels and spin-off comics. It's the classic story of an artist being screwed...

As fans await the release of his first short story collection “Illuminations”, Alan Moore has bluntly expressed what they knew was coming but may not have wanted to hear: he’s officially done with comics.
Alan Moore has followed through on his indication that he would retire after volume four of “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”, titled “The Tempest”, the final issue of which was released in 2019. In a new interview with The Guardian, he said, “I’m definitely done with comics…I haven’t written one for getting on for five years. I will always love and adore the comics medium but the comics industry and all of the stuff attached to it just became unbearable.”
All that “stuff” seems to be a combination of the political climate, the wave of superhero movies and that comics weren’t maturing but rather its fan base wasn’t. “I thought that...

One of the world’s most admired comic creators has expressed his concern at the crowds queueing up to watch superhero movies in recent years, saying such urges can be “a precursor to fascism,” and pointing out the correlation with Donald Trump’s election.
Alan Moore, who brought the world Watchmen, V for Vendetta and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen among his many titles, told the Guardian of his fears for the future.
He said:
“I said round about 2011 that I thought that it had serious and worrying implications for the future if millions of adults were queueing up to see Batman movies. Because that kind of infantilisation – that urge towards simpler times, simpler realities – that can very often be a precursor to fascism.”
And he pointed out the time of Donald Trump’s election in 2016 coincided with superhero movies moving to the top of the worldwide box office.

Arcane is an animated series available on streaming service Netflix. It is based on the popular multiplayer online battle arena (Moba) game, League of Legends. For those who have never played the game, you may feel there is no reason for you to watch Arcane but it has won over many non-League of Legends fans.
Following the release of the show on Netflix, the viewer figures have been rising. After the release of Act 2, Arcane rose to number one in the viewer charts in 52 countries, which is a tremendous achievement. Even when the first act was released, Arcane was hugely popular and topped the Netflix charts in 38 countries. "The Crow" may be cursed. The original 1994 film, based on a popular James O'Barr graphic novel, was directed by Alex Proyas and spawned three film sequels and a TV series. A long-awaited remake was first announced way back in 2008, alongside the news Relativity Media was bargaining with producer Ed Pressman over financing and acquiring the property. Stephen Norrington, best known for "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," was initially tapped to write and direct the feature. However, as the process developed, creative differences led to his departure, and a new team was hired.

The “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series at Disney+ is rounding out its cast with five new additions, Variety has learned exclusively.
Virginia Kull, Glynn Turman, Jason Mantzoukas, Megan Mullally, and Timm Sharp are all set to appear in recurring guest star roles in the small screen adaptation of the popular Rick Riordan book series. They join previously announced series lead Walker Scobell as well as recently announced co-stars Aryan Simhadri and Leah Sava Jeffries. News of the casting comes as the series kicks off production in Vancouver.
Mullally will play Alecto, a.k.a. Mrs. Dodds. Mrs. Dodds is Percy’s strict, irascible math teacher who may act monstrous at times, because she is. She’s one of the three Furies, known as Alecto, who loyally serves Hades, the god of the underworld.

My favorite Ray Liotta performance won't make this list. Technically, it can't.
FX's "The League" is a television show that's as broad as a half-hour situational comedy gets. It's the story of terrible people doing terrible things in the name of their bad fantasy football teams. In one of the show's best episodes, Ruxin (Nick Kroll) gets chummy with his boss, Mr. Hudabega (Ray Liotta), a fastidious germaphobe. Ruxin is sick and, when he tries to hide it during a meeting, Hudabega goes full Liotta. "There's no crime in being sick," he coos before leaning forward and grimacing, "The crime is not telling other people that you're...

Exclusive: Global sports streaming outfit Dazn is to make around 50 redundancies in its London headquarters, Deadline can reveal.
Staff in the Hammersmith, West London HQ have been told in the past couple of hours, Deadline understands, and a four-week redundancy process has been kickstarted, with around 50 roles set to potentially be closed.
The number represents around 5 of the UK workforce, most of whom work in London, and 2 of the global workforce of just over 2,500.
While London is where Dazn launched, it is understood that the decision is driven by the outfit’s decision to decentralize and focus on other growth regions such as Spain, Italy and Germany.
Around 50 people are conversely being hired in the Spanish office ahead of the launch of next season’s La Liga football competition and senior leaders have been sought across the growth markets in the past few months. Even with the UK redundancies, the...

20th Century Studios is developing a reboot of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for Hulu, Deadline can confirm.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was a fantasy pic released by 20th Century Fox in 2003, based on the comic book series of the same name from writer Alan Moore and artist Kevin O’Neill. Set in an alternate Victorian Age world, it followed a group of famous contemporary fantasy, science fiction, and adventure characters—including Captain Nemo, Dorian Gray and Tom Sawyer—as they teamed up on a secret mission.
The League of Extraordinary Gentleman comics were first introduced in 1999. Stephen Norrington directed the original film adaptation, starring Sean Connery, which was reputed to be the reason he retired from acting—so miserable was his experience on set. James Dale Robinson wrote the script, with Naseeruddin Shah, Peta Wilson, Tony Curran, Stuart Townsend, Shane West, Jason Flemyng and Richard Roxburgh rounding out the cast.

A seemingly unlikely reboot is in the works at Hulu. "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," the comic book from the legendary Alan Moore and artist Kevin O'Neill that was famously turned into an underwhelming blockbuster in 2003, is getting a do-over from Disney's 20th Century Studios. A new adaptation of “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen,” based on the Alan Moore graphic novels, is in the works at 20th Century Studios. The project is in early development at the studio, and intended to land on Hulu.
The film will be written by Justin Haythe, who wrote Jennifer Lawrence spy thriller “Red Sparrow.” Kevin O’Neill drew the series which ended after eight graphic novels in 2020. The hope for the new adaptation is to film the original books.
The new incarnation will be extremely faithful to the original graphic novel, which involves famous public domain characters like Allan Quatermain, Mina Harker from Dracula, The Invisible Man, Dr. Henry Jekyll, Fu Manchu, Captain Nemo and Professor Cavor teaming up to thwart a deadly attack on London from the air in Victorian times.

Once upon a time, in the mid-2010s, there was a little Showtime series called "Penny Dreadful." That series, loosely based on the "penny dreadful" magazines of the Victorian period, was a beautiful gothic nightmare. Viewers were enraptured with the stories of Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), adventurer Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton), possibly possessed Vanessa Ives (Eva Green), and howling hottie Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett). "Penny Dreadful" was like a truly excellent adaptation of "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," mixing public domain gothic characters to delightful conclusions.

In Queens, written by McGhee and directed by Tim Story, four estranged and out-of-touch women in their 40s — Naomi (Brandy), Jill (Naughton), Brianna (Eve) and Valeria (Velazquez) — reunite for a chance to recapture their fame and regain the swagger they had as the Nasty Bitches – their ’90s group that made them legends in the hip-hop world.
Velazquez plays Valeria, aka Butter Pecan. Better known in the 90s as Puerto Rican rapper, Butter Pecan, Valeria is the fourth member of the hip-hop group, the Nasty Bitches. Valeria wasn’t an original member, added by the groups’ manager, Eric, for her effortless star quality. It worked. The ladies catapulted into superstardom with a number-one record and iconic video. Valeria quickly became the face of the group,...

Sean Connery’s experience on box office dud The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen ended up drawing a line under the mainstream careers of both the legendary actor and director Stephen Norrington. The two parties would frequently clash throughout a troubled shoot, but at least Connery had the benefit of being a major star who was paid $17 million for his efforts, while the latter hasn’t stepped behind the camera since.
During his self-imposed retirement, the Academy Award winner turned down a huge number of offers to make a comeback, which notably included a fourth Indiana Jones movie. Henry Jones Sr. was involved in several of the many drafts that the script went through over the course of two decades, but after speaking with Steven Spielberg, Connery made it clear that he wasn’t interested.

That’s a hugely unfair assessment, though, and while he found it very difficult to mask his signature accent, one of the few times he actually tried, it ironically ended up with him winning an Academy Award for The Untouchables.
Connery was also pretty selective about the projects he chose to sign on to, although that didn’t always work out in his favor, with his experience on infamous dud The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen leading to his retirement from acting. The first and arguably best James Bond rejected a number of high profile gigs as well, including Jurassic Park‘s John Hammond, Harry Potter‘s Albus Dumbledore, Die Hard with a Vengeance...
