Unlike the Oscar Best Picture race, which doesn’t have a real frontrunner at this point, there’s a clear favorite in the Best International Feature Film category.
With the deadline for submissions in the category passing on Wednesday and Academy members invited to become voters in the category on Friday, one big question looms over this year’s race: Can anything beat “Emilia Perez”?
At the moment, the answer appears to be no. With 82 countries having announced their entries in the race, no other film has anywhere near the visibility of the French entry, Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical about a Mexican drug lord who undergoes sex reassignment surgery. The film has U.S. distribution from Netflix and is considered a strong candidate for a Best Picture nomination, which in five of the last six years has been a ticket to victory in the international race.

This year’s awards race has no strikes, no pandemic and no postponed or canceled awards shows.
At this point, it also has no real frontrunners.
So far, 2024 has been a down year at the box office and a confusing year on the film festival circuit. Before the fall festivals, the Oscar race was something of a waiting game, with everybody curious about the potential contenders that would be unveiled in Venice, Telluride and Toronto.
And now that those festivals have run their course, it’s a different kind of waiting game: waiting to see which films can start feeling like serious contenders rather than long-to-medium shots.
There’s no big commercial movie out there with the clout that “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” showed last year. And no indie film that seems to have the buzz to become this year’s “Coda” or “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”

The Motorcycle Diaries director Walter Salles developed I’m Still Here for seven years before it premiered as part of Venice’s Main Competition this year. That brings us closer to the time when a book of the same name was first published in Brazil: I’m Still Here (Ainda Estou Aqui), the 2015 memoir of Marcelo Rubens Paiva. Marcelo is the son of Rubens Paiva, an ex-Congressman whose opposition to the Brazilian military dictatorship resulted in exile in 1964 until, in 1971, he was made to disappear. Salles, who knew the Paiva family personally, centers his film around that traumatic event as experienced by Eunice (Fernanda Torres), wife of Rubens and a mother of five.
In the film, Brazil’s military dictatorship is felt but kept at the periphery of the frame. As the opening shot shows Eunice swimming in the ocean, Rio’s blue skies are momentarily pierced by a helicopter flying over.

Walter Salles’ I’m Still Here, the first narrative feature from the acclaimed Brazilian filmmaker in 12 years, traveled to the Lido’s Sala Grande this evening. Following the world premiere screening, the Venice Film Festival competition drama was welcomed with a 10-minute, 20-second ovation.
The audience gave a rousing response to the emotional political drama about one woman’s battle to discover the fate of her husband who disappeared after being arrested at the family’s home in Rio de Janeiro in 1970.
Salles, known for such critical hits as Central Station and The Motorcycle Diaries, was joined in Venice by cast members including Fernanda Torres and Selton Mello, as well as the author of the film’s source material, Marcelo Rubens Paiva.

Grief is said to have five stages — denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. But in the nightmare endured by the Paiva family there is no hope to accept what has happened to them as the government who tortured and executed the beloved head of their family deny he was ever even arrested. The latest film from Brazilian director Water Salles, best know for “The Motorcycle Diaries,” uncovers the Kafkaesque cruelty at the center of the military dictatorship that ruled its country from 1968-1985. Where a family is irreparably traumatized by their father’s fate and, as its matriarch Eunice (Fernanda Torres) puts it, “you leave everyone behind in a state of irreparable torture.” That torture was captured in the memoirs of the youngest Paiva family member, Marcello, whose book on what happened to his father Rubens (Selton Mello) is the basis for Salles’ film.

The Venice Film Festival — which gets underway today — has in recent decades fired the starting gun on the “traditional” awards season.
This year’s festival is stacked with A-list talent. It’s perhaps starrier than ever. The roll call includes Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, George Clooney, Michael Keaton, Jenna Ortega, Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Tilda Swinton, Julianne Moore, Daniel Craig, Angelina Jolie, Kevin Costner, Sigourney Weaver, Nicole Kidman, Isabelle Huppert, Winona Ryder, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe and many more.
In terms of awards hopefuls, Warner Bros’ Joker: Folie à Deux, Pedro Almodóvar’s English-language debut The Room Next Door, Angelina Jolie starrer Maria and Luca Guadagnino’s Queer are among those jostling for liftoff at the event, which is firmly established as a key Academy launchpad.

In director Roger Ross Williams’ Cassandro, we first meet Saúl Armendáriz — the real-life luchador portrayed by Gael García Bernal — when he’s still scraping his way through the amateur circuit. He’s got an uphill battle ahead: Not only is he smaller and lighter than most of his brawny opponents, he’s also openly gay and the subject of taunts and jeers from his leotard-clad colleagues.

Christmas movies are one of the most beloved genres in cinema history with every film fan having their own select favorite that they watch and rewatch every year. However, while the genre is treasured, the Oscars haven’t rewarded it as much as you might think or hope. There are several movies, however, that have found their way into Oscars lineups. We’ve detailed just five of those Christmas movies that have managed Oscar nominations or wins.
By the way, “The Apartment” is not included on this list (but might be in a future article). The Billy Wilder movie won five Academy Awards including Best Picture (1961) but there seems to be debate around whether it actually qualifies as a Christmas movie or not. It’s set during the holiday period, but some feel that isn’t enough for it to be an out-and-out Christmas movie. Perhaps that’s one for our forums.

Underwater cinematographer Peter Zuccarini has worked on some of the biggest movies of all time and swam with sharks (“Into the Blue”) and crocodiles (“The Motorcycle Diaries”) to get his shots, so one might think that a modest character study about a 60-year-old swimmer trying to fulfill a youthful ambition wouldn’t have anything new to offer him. Yet according to Zuccarini, telling the true story of Diana Nyad (Annette Bening) and her 110-mile swim between Cuba and Florida in Netflix’s “Nyad” offered him satisfaction unlike any he had ever experienced on set.
“Watching the movie I was thinking to myself, ‘I have never done this before,'” Zuccarini told IndieWire. “I’ve never been able to move a camera around someone so closely.” Indeed, one of the great strengths of “Nyad” is the intimate access that it gives the viewer to Diana’s emotional experience in the water,...

Steven Caple, Jr.'s 2023 movie, "Transformers: Rise of the Beasts," took place partly in Peru and was filmed in notable locations around the country. According to Andina, the Peruvian news agency, "Rise of the Beasts" was filmed partly in the lush jungles of San Martin where Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) and Optimus Primal (Ron Perlman) met to discuss tactics in taking down the wicked robot Scourge (Peter Dinklage). Other parts of "Beasts" were shot in Saqsayhuaman on the outskirts of the ancient city of Cusco, which is an enormous stone network of structures in the shape of a puma. It is one of Peru's most-visited locations. The filmmakers also filmed near the thousands of salt ponds of Maras, as well as near Macchu Picchu, the 15th-century Incan citadel you read all about in your fifth-grade geography class.
Naturally, the Peruvian tourism boards have begun offering "Transformers"-themed tours of Machu Picchu.

Last year, as movies conceived and shot during the Covid-19 pandemic began to be released, we saw a sudden influx of films rejoicing in the act of moviemaking and movie-watching. From Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans” to Damien Chazelle’s “Babylon,” from Sam Mendes’ “Empire of Light” to the Indian Oscar entry “Last Film Show,” a surprising number of films bred during pandemic isolation were movies about movies.
And a year later, during the final days of the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, another movie that belongs in that company had its world premiere. “The Movie Teller,” a Spanish-language film set in Chile and made by a Danish director with a cast whose biggest names are known for French and German movies, puts an international spin on the love of movies and embraces the art of storytelling in a way that is at times profoundly moving.

When I was in college cinema courses I made a Super 8 film called Movie Girl. It was a Hollywood-set love letter to movies centered on a Musso & Frank waitress who put herself dreamily into the plots of classic films. It won an award there but was the highlight of the directing career I never had. However, I have always been partial to filmmakers who put their own early film-going experience and passion into their careers now. You may have heard of them: Kenneth Branagh won an Oscar for doing just that in Belfast. Steven Spielberg got several nominations last year for his very personal The Fabelmans. Woody Allen had his own charming take in The Purple Rose of Cairo. Peter Bogdanovich made a lasting impression with 1971’s The Last Picture Show, as did Giuseppe Tornatore with his Oscar winner Cinema Paradiso.

When you think of a modern-day Mozart, you may picture a complex, classically trained, strictly disciplined persona whose compositions render a series of intricate masterpieces. Few might hold the image of a native Argentinian who can’t read or write music. Yet, there is Gustavo Santaolalla — a musician, producer and composer who boasts 17 Latin Grammy Awards and two Academy Awards for best original score for Brokeback Mountain and Babel. His riveting story from starting a band at the tender age of 16 to being jailed numerous times for his political beliefs, reads more like the movies he has composed scores for than real life. Nevertheless, Santaolalla is one of the most prolific, highly acclaimed musicians in the world.

Renowned composer Gustavo Santaolalla has been exploring a certain human quality in his music for years. “That melancholy of life,” describes the musician, “It’s the bittersweet aspects of life that can make you smile with a tear.” He has recently paired his signature evocative sound with the first season of HBO’s adaptation of “The Last of Us.” Santaolalla earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music Composition for excavating the humanity on display within the show’s apocalyptic world. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Viewers are bound to pick up on the haunting, somber strings which form the heart of Santaolalla’s “The Last of Us” score. There are several instruments at play here, most notably a guitar and a smaller roncoco, but the composer focuses on playing all of them with a string plucking technique. These types of string instruments have sat at the core of Santaolalla’s work for years.

“Beneath the Grass,” a drama about the criminal justice system and marijuana incarceration rates, will hit the market at the Cannes Film Festival next week.
Mía Maestro, Quincy Isaiah and Jeff Kober will lead the film, which begins production next month in New Jersey. Paradigm is representing worldwide sales for the film.
“Beneath the Grass” is set in 2008, capturing both the economic recession and the “Yes We Can” summer, and follows a single Latina mother whose illegal marijuana business is jeopardized when her young son befriends the new neighbors, a young white boy and his police officer grandfather.
According to production research, in 2008, Latino people were four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than white people, while Black people were seven times more likely. Despite marijuana legalization in several states in the years since, the research explains, arrest rates have risen with racial disparities still prevalent.

The 95th Academy Awards are behind us now, and one of the most interesting categories was Best Original Song. Winning an Oscar for an original song is definitely a prestigious honor, but perhaps the second most coveted prize for original movie music is the Grammy. Being voted on by two different academies means there’s bound to be a lot of discrepancies between the awards, especially with different voting deadlines and eligibility rules. With that in mind, what Oscar winning songs have also managed to get at least one Grammy nomination?

However, there are plenty of songs that have stood the test of time that you may not even know were Oscar-nominated -- or even that they were originally from a film!
Plenty of nominated songs have gone on to outlast tthe films they came from.
Here's a list to remind you how random, enduring, and inclusive the Best Original Song category has been over the decades.
"9 to 5" - 9 to 5 (1980)
Dolly Parton's first Academy Award nomination was for her upbeat ode to the working woman from the film of the same name.
That year, Best Original Song was a tough category, with "Fame" from Fame taking the prize.

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

James Franco’s casting as Fidel Castro in the upcoming period piece “Alina of Cuba: La Hija Rebelde” has caused major backlash, but the Oscar nominee has one important supporter: Castro’s daughter, Alina Fernández.
“James Franco has an obvious physical resemblance with Fidel Castro, besides his skills and charisma,” Fernández told Deadline of the “This Is the End” star portraying her Communist leader father.
“The project is almost entirely Latino, both in front and behind the camera,” Fernández added, citing Franco’s Portuguese heritage. “I find the selection of the cast amazing. The filmmakers worked a lot and I can’t be more grateful to them for their overall inclusive selection.”
For “Alina of Cuba,” Fernández will be played by Ana Villafañe, with Mía Maestro starring as Natalia “Naty” Revuelta, the socialite whom Castro had an affair with, resulting in the birth of Fernández.

Early in the pandemic, when so many musicians were recording stripped-back albums that reflected the quiet interiority of lockdown living, the Uruguayan artist Jorge Drexler thought he could try the same thing, making music using only the tools he had at his fingertips. “So many of us enclosed ourselves in our immediate worlds, with their guitars and our laptops,” Drexler says on a recent call from Spain. “There have been so many records made in a bedroom with whatever artists had at their disposal, so just a guitar, their voice,...

One of the leading producers and distributors of arthouse films, Focus Features celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and it’s hard to believe it’s been two decades since films like “Lost in Translation” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” broke out of the indie roots to touch the zeitgeist, “Brokeback Mountain” changed the LGBTQ film landscape forever, “21 Grams” launched the English-language career of two-time Oscar winner Alejandro G. Inarritu, and “The Motorcycle Diaries” turned Gael Garcia Bernal into an international star.
To celebrate the milestone, Focus Features has not only unveiled a new reel, which you can watch here, but the studio also plans to return seven titles from its library to AMC Theatres beginning April 29 for “Focus 20 week.” The titles include “Downton Abbey,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Burn After Reading,” “Eternal Sunshine,” “Atonement,” “Harriet,” and “Darkest Hour.” Learn more about the series here.

In the winnowing down of what was the most pop-star-studded shortlist for best original song in Oscar history, it was inevitable that there would be some big and beloved names left out what that field got narrowed from 15 to five. Among the music stars not making the cut: Jay-Z, U2, Ariana Grande, Kid Cudi, Brian Wilson, Jennifer Hudson, Carole King, Sparks and last year’s winner in the category, H.E.R. Making it: Beyonce, Billie Eilish, Van Morrison, Lin-Manuel Miranda and Diane Warren.
Oscar voters made history by delivering a pair of music nominations for the animated Disney film “Encanto”: Lin-Manuel Miranda for best song and Germaine Franco for best original score.
Franco becomes only the sixth woman to be nominated for composing an original score, the first Latina nominated in the category, and only the second American-born woman to be nominated.

After making its debut at the Tribeca Film Festival, the gripping documentary “Takeover” is set to be adapted into a narrative feature from Sister and Market Road Films.
“Takeover” marks the first Market Road Films project to come out of its first-look deal with Sister, which was co-founded by Elisabeth Murdoch, Stacey Snider and Jane Featherstone.
The short-subject documentary — directed by Emma Francis-Snyder and produced by Market Road Films’ Tony Gerber — chronicles the 12 historic hours in 1970 when 50 members of the Young Lords Party stormed the dilapidated Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx and made their cries for health justice known to the world. The Lincoln Hospital takeover resulted in the Patient Bill of Rights, which marks the 50th anniversary of its adoption next year. And though the Young Lords did not achieve its goal of universal healthcare, the bill is still the basis of care to this day.

Paola Suárez, producer of the breakout Argentine mob drama “La Chica que limpia,” died on Sunday after suddenly collapsing in Córdoba, Argentina, at the age of 41.
Her death comes just months after Fox gave a series greenlight in May to “The Cleaning Lady,” a U.S. version of “La Chica que limpia” created by Miranda Kwok, which is scheduled to bow as a midseason entry in the 2021-22 season. “La Muchacha que limpia,” a Mexican makeover produced by WarnerMedia Latin America and Btf Media, aired on HBO Latin America from June 25.

If “Io Sì (Seen)” wins the song Oscar on April 25, it will mark only the fourth time in Oscar history that a foreign-language lyric has taken the prize. Diane Warren’s song for “The Life Ahead,” which co-lyricist Laura Pausini sings in Italian, is the 10th song not in the English language to be nominated.
The winners were the title song from 1960’s “Never on Sunday,” in Greek; “Al Otro Lado Del Rio,” from 2004’s “The Motorcycle Diaries,” in Spanish; and “Jai Ho,” from 2008’s “Slumdog Millionaire,” a mix of Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi languages.
One of its strongest competitors is “Husavik,” from “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga,” which is sung partly in Icelandic.
A non-English lyric is not necessarily a handicap. Multiple factors go into an Oscar song win, and it isn’t always just the competition. Manos Hadjidakis’ song “Never on Sunday” — from Jules Dassin...

This story about “Minari” and composer Emile Mosseri first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s Awards Magazine.
Music is key from the very first minute of writer-director Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari,” when we hear a gentle musical score by composer Emile Mosseri as a little boy named David (Alan Kim) peeks out of the window from the back seat of a station wagon. The time is the 1980s and his Korean immigrant parents (Yeri Han and Steven Yeun) have just arrived with David and his sister (Noel Kate Cho) to their new home in rural Arkansas.
The poignant opening tune is actually one side of bookends. At the end of the movie, the instrumental track blooms over the closing credits and emerges as “Rain Song,” sung by actress Han, whose performance in the film was recently nominated for the Film Independent Spirit Awards.

As Brazil emerges from its shoot shutdown, the magnitude of its biggest production, Netflix fiction miniseries “Senna,” about Formula One racing genius Ayrton Senna, is rapidly becoming clearer.
The series, now in development, ticks multiple boxes for both Netflix and its producer, São Paulo-based Gullane.
“Language is no longer a barrier, only ambition and quality are barriers,” Francisco Ramos, Netflix VP of Spanish-language Originals in Latin America, said as a keynote at September’s San Sebastian Festival.
“Senna” certainly has ambition. It will be “the first Netflix title from Brazil conceived from its very inception as a global series,” “Senna” producer Fabiano Gullane told Variety during Ventana Sur.
In order for a Netflix title to “be successful abroad, it first has to have an impact in its own country,” Ramos also observed.
Senna can expect to have a huge impact n Brazil. For Gullane, “Other Formula One World Champions were heroes of their sport,...
