August’s New Nordic Films, Scandinavia’s biggest second-half-of-the-year film market, will open with drama-thriller “Way Home” from Charlotte Sieiling, a concept director on the original “The Bridge” and “Borgen.”
The screening will mark the world premiere of “Way Home,” sold by LevelK and produced by Denmark’s Toolbox Film.
“This movie means a lot to me, and I really hope the Nordic audience and the world will embrace our effort to tell this father-son story in an environment so different from ours, but still part of our reality,” said Sieling.
Sieling’s latest film, “Margrete – Queen of the North,” a lavish, stately historical drama,” in Variety’s words, asked t what extent a monarch would subordinate vital interest of state to personal interest. “Way Home” poses a similar question – how far are you willing to go to save the people you love? – in an entirely different context. Danish director Gustav Moller’s claustrophobic last feature, The Guilty, starred Jakob Cedergren as a police officer working the dispatch line, fielding calls from a victim, a suspect and many others, all the while holding the screen on his own. The movie so impressed actor Jake Gyllenhaal that he produced and starred in an English-language remake, directed by Antoine Fuqua, that skillfully transitioned the location from Copenhagen to Los Angeles.
But it’s hard to imagine that anyone could take the plot of Moller’s latest, Sons (Vogter), and relocate it easily to an American setting given the particulars. That’s because in Moller’s tense thriller, the drama revolves around a female correctional officer, Eva (Sidse Babett Knudsen), who works in an all-male prison, even on the maximum-security wing — a situation that’s not uncommon in liberal Denmark, but would be extremely rare in the U.S. Indeed, non-Scandinavian...

Susanne Bier is in demand. HBO reached out to “The Night Manager” Emmy-winner to direct the limited series “The Undoing”; she didn’t have to pitch. That’s not just because she’s a sought-after filmmaker — and because experienced women directors are a prize get these days — but the Danish Oscar-winning auteur (“In a Better World”) has a sophisticated skill set that includes something hard to find: she knows how to reach a wide audience.
In fact, showrunner David Kelley’s six-hour “The Undoing” not only drew a massive audience when it played on HBO and HBO Max last fall, but the numbers went up episode by episode until the climactic “whodunit” finale, which delivered 3 million viewers across all platforms. It was the most-watched HBO night for an original series since Kelley’s “Big Little Lies” finale in 2019.

The female characters are the least interesting thing in the original version of “After the Wedding,” an otherwise exceptional, Oscar-nominated Danish drama from “Bird Box” director Susanne Bier. Fortunately, that’s not at all true of a sharp new English-language remake that gender-flips the two lead roles to be played by women, providing an incredibly rich showcase for the immense talents of Julianne Moore (who goes big) and Michelle Williams (understated and devastating) in the process.
So often it happens that American producers fall in love with a perfectly strong foreign film, snapping up the remake rights, only to water it down for domestic consumption. That’s not the case here, as all involved have endeavored to maintain, if not strengthen, a grown-up scenario that respects the audience’s intelligence, even as it rather shamelessly hikes the emotional stakes with nearly every scene once the momentum gets going. After a point,...

Susanne Bier has a high-profile career that many filmmakers dream about. There’s the Oscar, the Emmy (for directing the six-part series “The Night Manager”), the Golden Globe (also for “In a Better World”), and the European Film Award (also for directing “In a Better World”). Two of her Danish-language features have been remade for American audiences. She was recently elected to the Academy’s board of directors.
She’s been working for nearly 30 years, moving from Dogme 95 luminary to highbrow auteur. Yet despite all this, she’s still not thrilled with the way the industry treats women directors.
“I mean, it’s not even benevolence, it’s sense,” Bier said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “Half of the world are women, and can we just please embrace that fact? Can we just please realize that movies, television, everything media, needs to reflect the fact that we are half the population?...

Seann Williams Scott (aka Stifler from American Pie, aka Doug Glatt from Goon) is a cinephile. You might not’ve guessed that, considering his acting choices haven’t been, shall we say, high caliber. Nonetheless, he loves movies, so picking his top five choices is as difficult as picking your favorite food — depending on his mood, the order and selection changes. Recently, he revealed his favorite films with this stipulation, but even then, they seemed a bit out-of-the-ordinary for the Stifmeister. During a Reddit Ama on Wednesday, Scott was asked to name his top five favorite films. At the time, he said these were at the top of his head at the time of the question: 1. The Inheritance, directed by Per Fly 2. Talk to Her, directed by Pedro Almodóvar 3. Betty Blue, directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix 4. Open Hearts, Susanne Bier 5. Chopper, Andrew Dominik Who ...

The kitchen sink bubbles over with a soapy lather in this Danish yarn which benefits greatly from the shadowy lure of Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. He lends no small amount of dignity to a cop who makes some very questionable decisions that threaten his career and his family life while director Susanne Bier, who has carved a niche in melodrama with films like Open Hearts, Brothers and In a Better World, makes up for some of her sins, here, with a typically cool aesthetic.
Interesting sociological questions aren't so much raised as rooted out from a massively contrived opening act when police detective Andreas (Coster-Waldau) responds to a domestic disturbance at the flat of a known drug addict and ex-con Tristan (Nikolaj Lie Kaas). This bona fide...

After sharing the screen in American Hustle and more substantially in Silver Linings Playbook, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence have a rapport that pays dividends in a sepia-hued adaptation of Ron Rash's novel Serena. Without their combined starriness, this period love story would sink into a slushy bog.
Danish director Susanne Bier is behind the camera and she's certainly earned her right to marshal a big Hollywood production with credits that include the original Brothers (remade with Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire) and her 2002 Dogme film Open Hearts. She usually handles high emotion with a light touch, and does so once again here (for the most part) against the backdrop of the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina.

A Susanne Bier movie is coming to Toronto, and sorry, Jennifer Lawrence fans, it's not "Serena." That Depression-era drama is still M.I.A., and Bier has since gone to make two more films, including this one, "A Second Chance." Led by "Game of Thrones" star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, with a script from Anders Thomas Jensen (previous Bier efforts "Open Hearts," "After The Wedding," "In A Better World," "Love Is All You Need"), this sounds like Bier returning to the well of her earlier dramas, and a distinct step away from her last effort, the sunny rom-com "Love Is All You Need." Here's the official synopsis: Detectives and best friends Andreas and Simon lead vastly different lives; Andreas has settled down with his beautiful wife and son; while Simon, recently divorced, spends most of his waking hours getting drunk at the local strip club. But all that changes when the two of them.

We've revisited the '60s, the '70s and the '80s...but is the Stone Age back in fashion for 2014? Julianne Hough reminded us of our favorite prehistoric cartoon character mom, Wilma Flintstone, at the Open Hearts Foundation Gala in Los Angeles as she walked the red carpet wearing an asymmetrical ivory-colored top, matching pencil skirt and stilettos. Her lack of accessories only emphasized the "bare" factor of this look. While we're all about understated elegance, this outfit lacked creativity and could have benefitted from a colorful clutch, chandelier earrings or a statement necklace (even Wilma was never to be seen with a bare neck and always rocked her signature white...

Though her Depression-era drama Serena, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, is still sitting on a shelf somewhere, director Susanne Bier is still moving from project to project. She was previously attached to direct Love Is All You Need but eventually dropped. Now, she’s settled on A Second Chance, an intense drama starring Game of Thrones‘ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (pictured above in the first image from the film). Though we already knew that the film would address the moral turpitude faced by those who have endured terrible tragedies, a new plot synopsis has shed some light on what we can expect.
Coster-Waldau, who was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award for his performance as Jaime Lannister on HBO’s Game of Thrones, has more than proven that he has dramatic depth to spare, so I’m very excited to see what he does as the star of A Second Chance.

While we'll keeping asking, "Where's 'Serena' starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence?" until our throats are dry, director Susanne Bier keeps powering on to new movies. Production has started on "A Second Chance," led by "Game of Thrones" star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and the first image from the movie has landed. Oscar-nominated "The Hunt" star Mads Mikkelsen combines a rare set of skills: the athleticism of a trained dancer, acrobat and gymnast and the sensitivity of a theater actor. After graduating from drama school in Denmark at age 30 he starred in fellow Dogma believer Nicolas Winding Refn's "Pusher" films, and later in the almost silent "Valhalla Rising" (he'd like to work with the director again). He broke out in two Susanne Bier films, "Open Hearts" and "After the Wedding," which earned an Academy Award nomination. He went on to play a Bond villain in "Casino Royale," and survived fighting green-screen scorpions in "Clash of the Titans," the mark of a true star. He can be dangerous and violent, deranged and funny, mighty warrior or tender lover. He likes to strip away extra layers to the lean meat of a performance. After nine years as a dancer, "emotional stuff gets in my body somehow,...

He made his name in Pusher and Open Hearts and went on to be a Bond baddie. But he is still waiting to work with Lars von Trier – and still trying to keep things radical
Mads Mikkelsen, as handsome as you like, lowers himself into a seat, rolls a cigarette and stares handsomely out over the sea. Did I mention he was handsome? Not only is he wearing the kind of shiny suit that only the handsomest among us can get away with, he's also sporting a radioactive tan that sets off his handsomely glittering eyes. The tan, he says, is because he's just come back from shooting a western in South Africa, not, I'm relieved to discover, the latest manifestation of the World Conspiracy of Handsomeness.
Oh well. It's safe to say that the way Mikkelsen, 48, looks has not hurt him in his quest to become a well-known and successful actor.

A star for many years in his native Denmark prior to crossing over with the villain role in the first relaunched Bond movie, “Casino Royale,” Mads Mikkelsen, attending the Marrakech Film Festival as part of the Tribute to Scandinavian Cinema, has for quite some time now been one of our very favorite working actors. From early collaborations with Nicolas Winding Refn (the ‘Pusher’ Trilogy, “Valhalla Rising”) and Susanne Bier ("After The Wedding," "Open Hearts") right through to supporting roles in Hollywood fare (“The Three Musketeers,” “Clash of the Titans”), Mikkelsen is often the best thing in his movies, even if he’s only in them briefly. But of course these last couple of years have kicked it up a notch further, with Mikkelsen taking two very different roles (almost mirror images, in fact), one of which broadens his appeal by bringing him weekly into U.S. living rooms as a guilty,...

Shifting from medieval fantasy to tense drama, Game of Thrones‘ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau has agreed to star in Susanne Bier’s upcoming film A Second Chance. Little is known about the plot thus far, but Deadline reports that A Second Chance will revolve around the central question of how far decent human beings are willing to go when tragedy blurs the line between the just and unjust.
Coster-Waldau’s starring role as Jaime Lannister on Game of Thrones may prevent production on the drama from getting underway too quickly, but Bier also has a pretty demanding schedule. She’s already locked in to direct Saoirse Ronan next year in Mary Queen of Scots, which was written by The Tudors creator Michael Hirst. We'll start off this Susanne Bier post with the question we've been asking in the last few posts about the Danish helmer—where's "Serena" starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence? Even as the filmmaker keeps lining up projects—"Mary Queen Of Scots," "The Rules Of Inheritance," "This Beautiful Life"—there has been pretty much nothing about the Depression-era drama, even though it wrapped ages ago. But whatever the status of that picture, Bier keeps piling on new projects to her slate. The latest is "A Second Chance," which will find her teaming with "Game Of Thrones" star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and returning to her career-making stomping ground of intense dramas. Longtime collaborator Anders Thomas Jensen ("Open Hearts," "After The Wedding," "In A Better World," "Love Is All You Need") has penned the tale that will explore how far human beings are willing to go when tragedy blurs the line between the just and unjust.

Pierce Brosnan falls in love under the Mediterranean sun, but thankfully, he doesn't have the urge to burst into song in this winsome romantic comedy. He stars as Philip, a wealthy businessman, long-time widower and casual cynic who travels to Italy for his son's wedding where he's surprised to find that he gets on rather well with future in-law, Ida, played by Danish actress Trine Dyrholm.
Dyrholm anchors the story with a disarming blend of kookiness and middle-aged ennui, doubled by the burden of cancer treatment and the discovery that husband Leif (Kim Bodnia) is having an affair. For Danish director Susanne Bier (Open Hearts, Brothers), this would usually be the cue for much angst and melodrama, but in this case, Ida sets the tone with sweet nonchalance.

Bier had developed quite the reputation over the years for sobering dramas such as “Open Hearts” and “After the Wedding,” but here she has taken a much lighter detour, giving us a beautiful look of Southern Italy along the way. The film stars Pierce Brosnan and Danish actress Trine Dyrholm. Dyrholm plays Ida, a hairdresser who successfully finishes her treatment for breast cancer, then comes home to find her husband’s cheating on her. In the meantime, Ida’s daughter is about to get married in Southern Italy. She winds up bumping into the groom’s father, Philip, (Brosnan) along the way, a man who’s just gotten over the tragic death of his wife.
