Well, although people had high hopes for the Dakota Johnson-Valentine release this year, Madame Web has been all over the place. From sloppy marketing to confusing script with dialogue disasters, the film’s journey has been anything but smooth. With a dismal 17% on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s safe to say Madame Web missed the mark.
But hold on, Johnson isn’t alone here! Turns out, the writers are in a bit of a pickle, churning out one dud after another. That’s why @CultureCrave on X cooked up a spicy list, showcasing the Rotten Tomato scores from the writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless’ previous ventures. And it does not look good on them.

The idea of a horror host is almost as old as the horror genre itself, dating all the way back to radio serials where an in-character narrator would ensure that the audience stuck around between stories; television viewers are similarly familiar with the notion, with names like Elvira, Mistress of the Night and Svengoolie transcending the B-movies they introduced on a weekly basis. It’s in comic books, however, that the horror host has truly blossomed, with characters like The Crypt Keeper, Uncle Creepy, and DC’s Cain and Abel becoming as famous — if not more so — than the stories they foisted upon the unsuspecting reader.
Amongst the scores of comic hosts, one holds an especially dear place in the heart of a generation of British readers: Misty, the cover star and fictional editor of the short-lived horror weekly of the same name, which ran from 1978 through 1980. The only constant...

Pleased to Meet Me was the sound of the Replacements trying for once. The band’s previous five LPs were snarky slacker masterpieces full of chintzy songs about hating music ’cause it’s got too many notes, ironic Kiss covers, and the occasional tender ballad, and their concerts were more like drunken hootenannies — all of this sloppiness was what won them their legend. But sometime after recording their beloved Tim album, Paul Westerberg decided they ought to grow up a little, the group parted ways with founding guitarist Bob Stinson,...

Nominations for the annual Golden Horse Awards, announced on Wednesday, bear witness to the schism that has now ripped apart the Greater China film industry.
Where once the awards were considered as the most prestigious prize event for Chinese-language cinema of all origins, a decision by mainland Chinese authorities to boycott the 2019 edition appears to have been repeated again in 2020.
With only a few exceptions from Singapore and Malaysia, the nominations are dominated by films of Taiwanese origin. Mainland Chinese films are entirely absent and only a few titles from Hong Kong dare to be counted.
Recently completed Taiwan comedy “My Missing Valentine” heads the hopefuls with 11 nominations, ahead of school-set drama “Classmates Minus,” which collected nine nominations, and opens the accompanying Golden Horse Film Festival.
Four of the five the best film nominees hail from Taiwan: Tsai Ming-liang’s Berlin festival anointed “Days”; “Dear Tenant”; “Valentine” and “Classmates.” The fifth,...

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “My Brilliant Friend,” Season 2, Episode 5, “The Betrayal.”]
Nearly every moment of “The Betrayal,” from the unstable Dutch angles of the cinematography to Max Richter’s chilling score, is building up to the episode’s final third like a horror movie. “My Brilliant Friend” has been operating on this track all season, with morbid flourishes in the visuals and sound design mounting toward an awful inevitability. Directed by Alice Rohrwacher, this episode is the season’s darkest and strongest hour yet.

DC’s Crimes of Passion, echoing those old lurid EC Comics books, certainly caught my eye. Essentially, it’s DC’s attempt at a Valentine’s Day Special, and why not. Actually, it is ten attempts at telling a decent Valentine’s Day story, as there are ten short stories in total, all with different characters and creative teams. Will we get lucky this Valentine’s? As I have mentioned many times recently, action films with a female vigilante as the protagonist is one of the biggest latest trends in Asian cinema and it was Indonesia’s turn to come up with an entry in the category (although one could also consider “Golden Cane Warrior” an entry), in a film that stands apart due to its comic book aesthetics, since the characters are based on Skylar Comics. Let us see what it is about.

Paul Thomas Anderson really likes Haim. After helming several music videos for the all-female group, he continued their collaboration over the weekend by directing their Coachella performance. Haim revealed their latest work together in a tweet: “What a night. We opened for Beyonce!! Huuuuuuge thank you to Paul Thomas Anderson for directing our dream show !”
In addition to the videos for “Night So Long (Live at the Greek),” “Right Now,” and “Little of Your Love,” Anderson also directed a 14-short featuring the band called “Valentine” last year; the latter screened on 35mm over the summer. “This short plays well with concert films, musicals, late night shows, sing-a-longs and a glass of beer,” reads a description on the 35mm print canister. “Please play loud!”
IndieWire has reached out to Anderson for comment.

Paul Thomas Anderson is sticking to his promise: he’s going to direct as many music videos or related visual events as he can for pop rock sisters Haim. “I do music videos because the Haim girls are in my life. As long as they’re around, I’ll hopefully be doing music videos for them,” Anderson told us in an exclusive interview for “Phantom Thread” last year.

Google “Valentine’s Day movies” and you’ll find all sorts of links to stories about romantic movies to watch on Valentine’s Day with your significant other.
I don’t have to actually go to any of those links to know what I’ll find there: “When Harry Met Sally,” “Titanic,” “Pretty Woman,” “Sleepless in Seattle,” “The Notebook” and some versions of “Romeo & Juliet” and “An Affair to Remember.” (Okay, I did go to one link and found the subversive suggestion of “Harold and Maude.” I liked that.)
If you were to confine your search to romantic movies that won the Oscar, you’d be surprised how few there are. In nine decades, voters found less than 10 swooners to honor as the year’s best picture. And that counts love stories that do not end well for the lovers, including “Casablanca,” “West Side Story,” “Titanic” and “Out of Africa.

Blanks to conduct Tapestry 'Ritual'
Urban Legend helmer Jamie Blanks has made a deal to direct the supernatural thriller The Ritual for Tapestry Films. The project is currently out to cast and is being eyed to start lensing early next year. Originally developed from an idea by Tapestry's Andrew Panay and penned by scribe Sheldon Turner (The Booster, 52 Blocks), the project centers on two undergraduates who cross the path of a group of co-eds who are practicing black magic in order to manipulate other students. Ritual was originally set up at Dimension Films, however Tapestry is discussing a partnership with Cobalt Media Group that would see the latter finance the project. Tapestry toppers Peter Abrams and Robert Levy will produce along with Panay. The company most recently produced the summer release National Lampoon's Van Wilder starring Ryan Reynolds and Tara Reid. Blanks is repped by CAA and the Firm. His other helming credits include Valentine, starring David Boreanaz, and Silent Number. Turner is repped by Endeavor, Benderspink and David Fox.

Denise Richards: Fish Lips
Denise Richards was an ugly child - and all her classmates called her "fish lips". Denise, who shot to fame in Starship Troopers and Wild Things before teaming up with Pierce Brosnan in The World Is Not Enough is now considered one of Hollywood's most beautiful actresses. But she stunned when she saw the girl playing a young version of her character in new movie Valentine (currently the #2 film in America) - because the girl was much prettier than Denise herself had been as a child. She says, "I was so flattered that they cast the young girl as they did to play me young because she was so adorable. I did not look like that when I was that age." She adds, "People used to call me `fish lips'. Hopefully, I will have my sweet revenge now that people are putting collagen in their lips. Every girl at my high school had big hair and feathered-out wings, " she says, and they jeered at her for being different. Denise says at one point, she wanted to become a veterinarian, because she got to like animals better than humans. Her best pal now is her Boston terrier puppy.

Denise Richards Is A Happy Germ Nut
Hollywood hottie Denise Richards is terrified by germs - and packs a "sick bag" every time she leaves her home. The Valentine (2001) star is so petrified of throwing up and getting sick, she'll do anything to stay germ free. She says, "I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but I like everything clean. It's flu season and so I'm carrying around stuff. I carry around hand sanitizer and wash with it after I've shaken hands. I know it's annoying and I'm sick and tired of using it." And Richards admits her obsession threatens not only her pin-up status, but also her jet-setting lifestyle. She explains, "There are so many germs on a plane. I asked my doctor what I could use and he gave me this antibacterial ointment which I put in my nose, and then I bring my own blanket because God only knows who's had an airplane blanket before me. I put it entirely over my head. I must look like a freak." The fussy sexbomb also admits she sprays remote controls and telephones everytime she enters a new hotel room. "And I've got a sick bag that my agent turned me on to because I don't want to get stuck in a foreign country where you can't read the labels on things - it has Immodium, Flumadine and Zithromax among other things." (IMDb editors' note: Most doctors caution against medically unsupervised use of antivirals and antibiotics like Flumadine and Zithromax. Please seek medical guidance before using any prescription medications. Thank you.)...
