The character name 'Dr. Frankenollie', besides the obvious Frankenstein reference, is also a reference to legendary Disney animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. He was originally going to be named Dr. X, Dr. XX, or Dr. XXX (like the villain from The Mad Doctor (1933), but were forced to avoid doing so.

The creature is called Julius but closely resembles classic Disney villain Pete, including his peg leg and his voice, provided by Jim Cummings, the current voice of Pete.
Mickey introduces himself to the monster in the same manner he introduced himself to the bear in "The Pointer (1939)". He even uses the same hand gestures.
