The past 12 months have been outstanding for H.E.R. Not only did she pick up two Grammys at the 2021 ceremony including Song of the Year for “I Can’t Breathe,” she also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song a few weeks later for “Fight For You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah.” “Fight For You” was then submitted to the 2022 Grammys, and it has been nominated for Song of the Year, Best Traditional R&b Performance, and Best Song Written for Visual Media. Now it’s the front-runner for the latter two according to Gold Derby’s odds. But just how common (or uncommon) is it for Oscar-winning songs to have Grammys to their name as well?

After nine decades of Academy Awards ceremonies, the most Oscars won by a film is still 11. That long-held record is shared by three iconic movies: “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003), “Titanic” (1997) and “Ben-Hur” (1959). Scroll through our photo gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see the 15 films that won the most competitive Oscars throughout history.
The third “The Lord of the Rings” movie went undefeated at the Oscars, going 11-for-11. It took home prizes for picture, director (Peter Jackson), adapted screenplay, art direction, costume design, film editing, makeup, score, song (“Into the West”), sound mixing and visual effects. Award-winning Irish director Tomm Moore unveiled extensive footage from his upcoming feature Song of the Sea at a Work in Progress session of the Annecy Animation Film Festival on Friday (June 14).
Like Moore’s previous film - Oscar-nominated The Secret of Kells - the picture takes inspiration from Irish folklore, centring on the legend of the Selkies, mythological creatures that are part seal, part human.
The storyline revolves around brother and sister Ben and Saoirse, who are forced to leave their coastal home to live with their grandmother in the city following their mother’s mysterious disappearance.
When they decide to runaway and return home by sea, the voyage takes an unexpected turn - leading them into a fantastical marine world - where it becomes clear there is more to Ben’s silent sister Saoirse than meets the eye.

Actor David Kelly, who played Charlie's Grandpa Joe in 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, died on Sunday at the age of 82 in Dublin after a short illness. Called the "grand old man of Irish acting" by the Irish Times, Kelly had a career that spanned 50 years and included work on television, movies, and on the stage.
The actor starred in a broad range of movies including Stardust, Waking Ned Devine, and Into the West. Ned Devine garnered the actor a SAG nomination and was also the movie he jokingly credited for making him a sex symbol, due to the fact that he was featured nude on a motorcycle. His television roles included the Irish mini-series Strumpet City, as well as a small but memorable part in the series Fawlty Towers.

Dublin actor David Kelly passed away on Sunday following a short illness. He was 82-years-old. For over 50 years, working right up until last year, Kelly worked in theater, television, and film. His most famous role was in the 1980s Rte series “Strumpet City”. A piece of work he also singled out as one of his favorite. His role as O’Reilly the builder in 1975 made him recognizable all over the world. According to the Irish Times he often remarked on how those nine minutes in John Cleese’s comedy made him recognizable. Born in Dublin, 11th July 1929, he started acting at the age of eight in the Gaiety Theatre. His friend, Director of the Gate Theater, Michael Colgan, speaking to Rte, also remarked on what an excellent artist Kelly was. He was a trained calligrapher and a talented watercolour artist. In the 1960s and 70s he played eccentric characters in...

The distinctive and beguiling Irish actor David Kelly, who has died aged 82, was as familiar a face in British television sitcoms as he was on the stage in Dublin, where he was particularly associated with the Gate theatre. But he was perhaps best known in recent years for playing Grandpa Joe in Tim Burton's movie adaptation of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), an engaging performance that was honoured with a lifetime achievement award from the Irish Film and Television Academy; Johnny Depp, who played Willy Wonka, paid a touching tribute on a video link from Hollywood to Dublin.

Critic.de has posted three clips, and yes, they are extraordinarily promising. Hopes are high.

New reports suggest that Jim Sheridan will be writing and directing a reimagining of Mike Newell‘s 1992 directorial effort Into the West. The big change? Sheridan is switching out the original’s Ireland setting for that of the United States, while keeping many of the same themes as Newell’s original. While that probably sounds like a completely random thing for Sheridan to be doing, it turns out that he was one of the writers of the 1992 original in the first place so it’s more like he’s revisiting old material. [Screen Daily (via The Playlist)]

We’ll forget about Get Rich or Die Tryin’ and Dream House can be left forgotten too. More recently Jim Sheridan had success with Brothers and now the director is going back into the west (sorry). The original movie hit the big screen back in 1992 with the likes of Gabriel Byrne and Colm Meaney, as well as a host of other incredible talent. Jim Sheridan is looking to do an update to the movie for an American audience with a reimaging set in a new Us setting. And by all accounts, the Irish Film Board have granted the project 50K! How the story is going to get an American slant is beyond me, but then again, I’m not the Oscar nominee that Sheridan is. The original trailer for Into The West is below, so you can get an idea of what might be coming your way stateside!

Back in 1992, before venturing into a different kind of fantasy with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, director Mike Newell went Into the West for the story of two young boys who escape the poverty of their Dublin council estate on adventure ‘into the west’ to find a mystical horse recently stolen from them. Now it sounds like a remake is in order as Screen Daily reports director Jim Sheridan, who most recently struck out with Dream House, has been lined up to write and direct an update of the film with original producer Tim Palmer also involved. The story will be reimagined with the same themes, but in a United States setting. For those cult fans the series has, it should help that Tim Palmer is involved, but American remakes can be worrisome. If you were Jim Sheridan, and your recent cinematic output included the critcally-mauled likes of Get Rich Or Die Tryin' and Dream House (as well as the much better received Brothers), we wouldn't blame you for wistfully wanting to re-visit a better time in your career. But digging up a film you wrote back in the 1990s seems like an odd idea. Still, Sheridan's going for it, developing a new take on Into The West. The original, which Mike Newell brought to cinemas in 1992, saw the likes of Gabriel Byrne, Ellen Barkin and Brendan Gleeson in the tale of two young boys who escape the grit and grime of their Dublin council estate by heading out on an adventure to recover the mystical horse stolen from their pop (Byrne), once known as King Of The Travellers. At the time, we said, "its heady mix of Irish myth and gritty realism...

It's because Hollywood has put horses out to pasture, and the days of the great equine role seem to have passed. Joe Queenan mourns the disappearance of Hollywood's mane players
At a certain age, actors – both men and women– start to complain that they are no longer offered the roles they once were, that the scripts they are sent by their agents are not equal to their talents. But isn't that even more true of horses? Horses used to be prominent figures in films, rearing their glorious heads and shaking their magnificent manes in everything from Fort Apache to Ben-Hur, not to mention idolatrously horse-centred motion pictures such as The Man from Snowy River and National Velvet. Gabriel Byrne has received critical acclaim and numerous awards for his recent role as Dr. Paul Weston in HBO's, In Treatment, a drama series about a psychotherapist and his weekly sessions with patients, but the Irish actor has been playing some of the most compelling characters to have ever graced the screen for over thirty years. Although the actor has mentioned in interviews that he hates being described as brooding, American audiences have come to know him as such. This is particularly amusing since Byrne gained popularity in Ireland as a soap actor, something we equate more with fluff than talent in the Us. Of course, it's no surprise that on paper, Irish soap operas seem to be far more tragic and symbolic than their American counterparts.
The prevailing theme in Byrne's career seems to be playing the man who acts on instinct (and often impulse) -- the most colorful...
