The allure of love—it truly is the most beautiful feeling in the world, isn’t it? Love has a force so profound that it can stir souls, shape destinies, and etch momentous moments into the canvas of our lives. Now, imagine that force captured on the big screen, as exemplified by Tom Hanks and the timeless love story embedded in Robert Zemeckis’ Forrest Gump.
Can you feel the magic? But did you know that behind the scenes, it was Hanks’ admiration for his actress wife, Rita Wilson, that infused such honesty & warmth into every frame of the 1994 film? Without the latter’s influence, the enchanting narrative between Hanks’ Forrest & Robin Wright’s Jenny might have lacked its heartfelt essence.

While Tom Hanks is renowned for his iconic acting skills as one of the best veteran actors in the entire entertainment industry, he is also quite famous for the powerful relationship he shares with his current wife, Rita Wilson.
If anything, their 30+ years of being in love have transformed them into being regarded as one of Hollywood’s most beloved power couples of all time.

But while fans know the duo for what they are today, not many know how it all started. Ironically enough, the beginning of this pair’s legendary friendship before they fell in love has something very close to do with one of Hanks’ best qualities.
In fact, the actor even sported this quality in Forrest Gump and transformed it into one of his most celebrated masterpieces: His storytelling skills!

Tom Hanks has starred in some of the most celebrated films in American history, but his wife, Rita Wilson, has revealed that there’s one now-iconic role that he turned down: Harry, in the 1989 rom-com When Harry Met Sally. According to Wilson, Hanks said no to the role because he was too happy about getting divorced at the time.
That’s right — according to a new interview with Wilson on iHeart Podcast’s Table for Two With Bruce Bozzi, Hanks was enjoying his divorce so much that he couldn’t imagine getting into character for the heartbreak-focused film.
“[Hanks] turned it down because he was going through a divorce and he was very happy to be not married,” Wilson explained. “And so he could not understand that a person going through a divorce would have anything other than just like, ‘I’m so happy.’”

Somewhere in between his Oscar-winning portrayal of a gay lawyer dying of AIDS in "Philadelphia" and his performance as the mild-mannered captain of an Army detachment ordered to rescue the sole surviving son of a family that lost three of their children to the Normandy Invasion in "Saving Private Ryan," Tom Hanks was declared the James Stewart of his generation. The evidence was compelling. As Forrest Gump, astronaut Jim Lovell, and Sheriff Woody, Hanks had come to exemplify all that is right and decent about America. We saw the best of ourselves in his characters, while, off-screen, he exuded good, clean charm whenever he turned up on a talk show or a red carpet. He seemed affable, erudite, and kind. But to call him the Baby Boomer James Stewart was to ignore Stewart's willingness to play hard against type.

Like many kids of the '90s, John Candy was my treasured movie uncle growing up. The beloved "Second City Television" funnyman turned comedic superstar could just as easily make you bust a gut laughing as he could tear your heart out. Heck, he was capable of doing both those things in the span of a single scene. That we were forced to bid farewell to him at the age of only 43 — when he died of a heart attack in 1994 — only makes the time we got him all the more precious.
Candy's fellow wise-cracking Canuck, Ryan Reynolds, paid his respects to the late funnyman on the 25th anniversary of his passing in 2019, posting a short video of clips from Candy's movies on Twitter as "a small tribute to a comedic genius and Canadian hero." Amazon’s Prime Video is in negotiations to acquire a John Candy documentary from Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds, TheWrap has confirmed.
Hanks, son of Tom Hanks and star of “Life in Pieces,” “Orange County” and “A Friend of the Family,” will direct the project while Reynolds, star of “Deadpool,” “Free Guy” and “The Adam Project,” will produce alongside George Dewey via his Maximum Effort production company.
The documentary feature will explore John Candy’s life and career, including starring roles in “The Great Outdoors,” “Spaceballs,” “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” “Uncle Buck” and “Cool Runnings.” The actor was on the verge of establishing himself as a comic actor who could also handle dramatic roles in weightier fare like “Only the Lonely” and Oliver Stone’s “JFK” when he died in 1994 of a heart attack at the age of 43.

The late comedian John Candy is getting the documentary treatment from Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds.
Amazon’s Prime Video is in negotiations to acquire an untitled film that Hanks has been quietly directing. Reynolds — who, like Candy, hails from Canada — is producing alongside George Dewey via his Maximum Effort production company.
The film will explore the life and legacy of the iconic funnyman Candy, who died of a heart attack in 1994 at the age of 43. But insiders say the film will go beyond the persona and delve into the inner life that Candy kept private off-screen. With the full support of Candy’s widow, Rose, and their two children, Jen and Chris, Hanks will utilize never-before-seen home videos, archives and interviews with the family to explore the man behind the movie star. When Tom Hanks jogged onto screen in his feature film debut in the 1980 slasher pic “He Knows You’re Alone,” one probably couldn’t have predicted he would go on to become one of the most successful and beloved actors of all time. Playing a psychology student who postulates about the appeal of fear, Hanks makes manages to the most of his few minutes of screen time. And even though it’s brief, you can catch some of the hallmarks of what would later become a Tom Hanks performance — charismatic but a little goofy, handsome but non-threatening, and able to make any line sound like it has a handful of meanings.

Rita Wilson is everyone’s best friend, one of those performers who appears as beloved in real life as on the screen. As Meg Ryan’s character says in “Sleepless in Seattle” after mistaking Wilson’s character for a romantic rival, “She looked like somebody we would’ve been friends with.” Of course, acting is only one facet of her personality; she’s also a heralded singer and award-winning producer. But to so many people, she’s instantly identifiable as a welcome presence on screens.
“I’ve played the wonderful, warm, kind, understanding sisters, aunts, mothers, daughters, friends, and I have loved it,” Wilson says of her roles in hits including “Now and Then” and “It’s Complicated”; she is on screens now in “Gloria Bell” as Julianne Moore’s bestie. But she has also enjoyed going against type in recent roles. “Playing a narcissistic mother on ‘Girls’ was so liberating.

As I thought about the loss of Penny Marshall earlier this week, something occurred to me. Ron Howard might have given fellow sitcom star Tom Hanks – the “Bosom Buddies” star who also did guest spots on “Happy Days” — his first meaty film role as a leading man in 1984’s “Splash,” in which he charmingly romances Daryl Hannah’s mermaid. But it was Marshall, along with brother Garry, who saw more dramatic potential in the actor who started off doing Shakespeare on stage.
Post-“Splash,” Hanks would be recruited to host “Saturday Night Live,” his first of nine stints and a sign he had arrived. But his follow-up movies such as “Bachelor Party,” “The Man With One Red Shoe,” “Volunteers” and “The Money Pit” were the kind of generic comedies that depended on slapstick and rowdy humor to milk laughs.

Some actors manage to catch lightning in a bottle twice. It’s impressive enough to find your niche in Hollywood’s A-list even once. Occasionally, an actor will reinvent him/herself and begin a new phase of their careers that will be even more successful than it was before. Here are nine actors who had a cinematic rebirth.
Liam Neeson- Neeson has had a long career, and the early part of it was in dramatic roles. An intense dramatic actor, he apeared in films like The Dead Pool, Dark Man, Schindler’s List, Rob Roy and Les Miserables. His career rebirth came after playing Qui-Gon Jinn in Star Wars-Episode one: The Phantom Menace. After that, he got more offers for actions parts and recreated himself as an action hero in films like Gangs of NY, Batman Begins, Taken, Clash of the Titans, the A-Team, Unknown, the Grey, Taken 2,...

Usually when the Middle East shows up in modern films it’s the setting for dramas and thrillers. The troubled global “hot spot” has been the backdrop for “based on a true story” tales of the military with American Sniper and one of the first flicks to be released this year, 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi. So it’s surprising that this region has been the setting for two comedies this year (Salmon Fishing In The Yeman tested the waters five years ago). And one big source of the humor is the culture clash when Americans arrive there. It’s the old “fish out of water” recipe for laughs. A couple of months ago, it was Tina Fey butting heads in Whiskey Tango Foxtrot. And now arriving in Saudi Arabia is the affable everyman (really every-American-man) Tom Hanks, an actor familiar with that comedy trope, going back thirty years...

It is humanly impossible to be excited by the idea of a new talk show. When's the last time you sat through an entire talk show monologue? Was it recently? If so, then why? What did you hope to achieve by hearing three jokes about current events? Don't you understand that the internet will compile any worthwhile talk show clips for you in the morning? Come on. Grow up. Luckily, James Corden seemed very aware of boring talk show tropes during his "Late Late Show" debut and did his best to circumvent them. The Tony-winning actor served up a modest but promising first show with the help of guests Tom Hanks and Mila Kunis, who were brilliant and utterly boring (respectively). Kunis spent what seemed like a fortnight on Corden's couch discussing her jewelry designs. Almost bravely dull. To Corden's credit, there were practically no other lowlights to his debut.

Though Tom Hanks had been around the block several times before Big hit, it’s the movie that really launched him into a top spot in the cultural consciousness. The awesome, but short-lived, Bosom Buddies managed to get Hanks some guest spots on shows like Family Ties, and 1984 kicked off a string off films that, while perhaps loved by some, didn’t exactly serve to rocket anyone to stardom – Splash, Bachelor Party, The Man with One Red Shoe, Volunteers, The Money Pit. 1988′s Big put Hanks on the map in a big way, and audiences were taken by the charm, depth, and overall impressive abilities Hanks displayed in the film. This carried him through a few years of what we have to now hope were contractual obligation films (Joe vs. The Volcano, The ‘Burbs, Turner & Hooch), to the point that Hanks managed A League of Their Own, Philadelphia, Forrest Gump,...

Tom Hanks is two time Oscar winning actor who has been nominated five times. He won for "Forrest Gump" and "Philadelphia" and was nom'd for "Cast Away," "Big" and "Saving Private Ryan.” Some will even say he was robbed of a six nomination this year for “Captain Phillips,” that last scene alone being rather Oscar-worthy on its own. But imagine that there’s a generation out there that might not realize how far he’s come and remember that way back when, he was a pretty silly (but still awesome) comedian. The TV show “Bosom Buddies” lead to great comedy roles in "Splash," the severely underrated "The Money Pit," "Volunteers" and "Bachelor Party." In fact, it was hard to throw a rock five feet in the 1980s and not hit a comedy that Hanks was involved in. In 1988, “Big” was the first serio-comic role that earned him respect and his first Oscar nomination,...

For 20 years, audiences have viewed Tom Hanks as a nice, average Everyman. Older audiences may remember that he got his start as a drag comic and childlike goofball. Either way, it may come as a shock to think of him as a tough guy who takes on modern-day pirates in the new thriller "Captain Phillips."
And yet, seemingly under our noses, Hanks has been quietly building a resume worthy of a two-fisted action star, the sort of guy you'd want to have your back in a pinch, and who can be counted on to save the day. In fact, maybe we should stop thinking of him as Tom Hanks: Everyman, and start thinking of him as Tom Hanks: Badass!
Hanks's drive toward badassery actually began early on, even when he was still playing goofballs. In 1985's "The Man With One Red Shoe," he gets involved with an international spy ring.

Critics are hailing Captain Phillips as featuring one of Tom Hanks' greatest performances. He will likely receive his sixth Oscar nomination for Best Actor if not also his first win in 18 years. But will it be anyone's favorite Tom Hanks movie or role? Sure, one of his most beloved performances is his second to be honored with an Academy Award -- Forrest Gump -- but many of us will still always have a soft spot for that loud, wacky comic actor who bobbled his skinny little head around in movies like Bachelor Party and Volunteers. He's gotten more serious as his head has gotten bigger (I mean more physically than egotistically), even when he's playing ridiculous parts, like those in The Terminal and Cloud Atlas. I was dying for him to make some sort of return to...

Hell, there are no rules here – we’re trying to accomplish something.

There’s a story that on the November night in 1972 when HBO went on the air for the very first time to a few hundred subscribers in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, Gerald Levin – then HBO’s top programmer and soon-to-be chief exec – ordered living room furniture installed in his office so he could watch that premiere night of HBO the way the channel’s first subscribers would see it. He wanted to see HBO through their eyes.
Today, in an era of Netflix, Hulu, on-demand, downloadable content available on almost everything but the kitchen toaster, it’s hard to appreciate how novel the concept of HBO was over 40 years ago. Except for a few small pockets of the country which had experienced the come-and-go efforts of earlier subscription TV services, nobody – including the people running...

It's been more than a decade since the 1990s ended, yet the Internet can't seem to go a day without a reminder of the neon slap bracelets that may have been banned from your school.

Tom Hanks has a problem with his dressing room.
The two-time Oscar winner and generally agreed-upon national treasure has just arrived backstage at UCLA's Freud Playhouse, dragging a duffel bag in each hand with his wife, Rita Wilson, trailing behind. (Wilson's wearing a neck brace, for some reason.) It's been 35 years since Hanks made a living in a place like the Freud – a 567-seat theater whose last big show was a student production of A Chorus Line – and though he has a reputation as a down-to-earth, easygoing guy, he's also,...

Happy birthday, Rita Wilson! The actress, producer, singer and Huff/Post50 editor-at-large turns 56 today.
In her own birthday well wishes to us here at Huff/Post50, Rita recalled a toast her dear friend Nora Ephron gave her on her 50th birthday: "I am here to tell you good things can happen after turning fifty." Rita is a living embodiment of that statement, showing a joyful fearlessness as she tackles new challenges with her trademark moxie and gusto.
Whether it's putting on a producer hat or stepping into a recording booth, Rita is living her 50s out loud and with no reservations. It's one of the many things we love about her. In fact, to honor our editor-at-large on her big day, here are 10 things we love about Rita Wilson:
1. She takes big risks. In 2006 when Wilson took on the role of Cook County Jail's most infamous murdress Roxie Hart in the Broadway musical "Chicago,...

Rita Wilson has been named editor at large of Huff/Post 40, a new website targeting baby boomers that is being launched by the AOL Huffington Post Media Group in August. According to Arianna Huffington, Wilson even came up with the site's slash-laden name. While primarily known as an actress -- Wilson met her husband Tom Hanks on the 1985 comedy "Volunteers" -- the 54-year-old has dabbled in editorial before. She's been an contributing editor at O, The Oprah Magazine since 2006. Despite the new duties, Wilson, who produced Nia Vardalos' wildly successful 2002...

As an actor who's never shied away from admitting that he got lucky in his phenomenal career -- and who's generally considered one of the nicest fellows in show business -- Tom Hanks has still managed to pull down an impressive roster of film roles. As to what the best of those roles would be ... that's bound to be highly debatable, and I'm sure the comments following this post will bear that out.
If one wants to go by Oscar-winning performances, Hanks won back-to-back awards in 1993 and 1994 for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump. But it can be argued that the first, while a fine performance, was lauded mainly for the "bravery" of playing a gay man, and for the important subject matter. In Gump, it was a measure of the (inexplicable, to someone who dislikes Gump intensely) popularity of that film, and for the Academy's affection for actors who play characters with physical or mental disability.

Tom Hanks was often likened to a 'new Jimmy Stewart' during his peak years. I never thought the tag quite fit because, though Hanks is a likeable "everyman" lead, he doesn't have the same range. Hanks, unlike Stewart, rarely tests the darkness at the edges and when he did in Road to Perdition it was one of his flattest portraits. In comparison, can anyone watch Vertigo and not come away fully aware of how comfortable Jimmy Stewart was burrowing into the skin of rather squirm-inducing psyches? The following lineup only includes lead or huge supporting roles and no voice work. (I'm not sure how one would categorize The Polar Express. How would one?)
So... sorry, Woody. You'll make it up at the box office this weekend with Toy Story 3 [my review] playing everywhere. Rest assured that you're still one of his most iconic roles.

I'm really looking forward to checking out "Death at a Funeral" this weekend. Someone from Screen Gems e-mailed me towards the end of the year with a list of upcoming movies on the studio's slate. "Funeral" was among them. I immediately scanned past it to focus on more action-driven fare, like "Legion" and "Takers." A leopard can't change its spots and all that.
I later returned to "Funeral," a Neil Labute-directed remake of the 2007 UK film (directed by Frank Oz!), and watched the trailer. That was it. Massive ensemble cast that includes Tracy Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Martin Lawrence, Luke Wilson and Peter Dinklage. A trailer overflowing with funny moments. Chris Rock produced. I'm sold.
Rock has come quite a long way since his early bit roles in "Beverly Hills Cop II" and "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka." He's evolved as both a performer and a writer. Or has he?...

Roiled up on residual airline diss rage and weed, Kevin Smith spilled the beans to NHL.com about his lead for the upcoming Hit Somebody. It's to be none other than Seann William Scott, which will make this their third collaboration.
I can see Sws as a hockey player. I'm totally behind this decision. Despite his declaration to play Stifler as long as they'll have him, I think that's just more of his strangely upbeat Christian moxie than any sort of desperation ploy. Kid's got some decent chops -- within a range. In the mxyzptlk of Southland Tales, he held his own. And he impressed the bejeezus out of me in The Promotion. It's not like he's doing Shakespeare, he's just playing a hockey guy.
But I think Smith is going a little fucking overboard in his proclamations that Sws will be Tom Hanks Big. Maybe Tom Hanks Volunteers? Or Versus a Volcano?...
