Kiah Roache-Turner’s Sting is the stuff of nightmares for all arachnophobes. We chat to the director about his new, spine-tingling horror film.
“I’m terrified of spiders” isn’t exactly what you expect to hear from the mouth of a director who has just done a horror film about a giant spider.
Yet, that’s exactly what Kiah Roache-Turner has done with Sting. We catch up with Roache-Turner as he’s filming his next film, The Beast Of War, which sees him swap giant spiders for giant sharks. “I just spent a day dealing with giant sharks. And now I’m going to talk to you about giant spiders!” Roache-Turner grins over Zoom. Variety is the spice of life, as they say.

Evangeline Lilly is opening up about an awkward moment with screen icon Michael Douglas.
As reported by the Daily Mail, Lilly appeared on a recent episode of U.K. chat show “The Jonathan Ross Show”, where she shared an anecdote about filming a restaurant scene with Douglas and fellow “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” co-star Michelle Pfeiffer.
Chatting between takes, Lilly casually mentioned that the two actors were “GILFs,” a derivation of “Milf”, or “mother I’d like to f**k.”

Douglas, however, told her that he had “no idea” what the word meant; according to Lilly, “instead of being cool about it,” she instead attempted to explain the meaning to her 78-year-old-co-star by informing that “It’s a grandpa I’d like to f**k.”

Director Kevin Reynolds’ graphic, gritty desert combat movie is about a lost tank in the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan. Besides being 98 an unpleasant downer, it now reminds us that we got into the exact same fix just a decade after the Russkis threw in the towel. Cruel Russki soldiers commit atrocities against vengeful Moujahedin resistance, and there’s really nobody to root for. George Dzundza, Jason Patric, Steven Bauer and Stephen Baldwin endure a rough ordeal out in the dirt, hoping for the next war movie breakthrough hit.

"Beauty and the Beast" truly is a tale as old as time, and has been retold in countless ways, like the Ron Perlman and Linda Hamilton TV series of the same name, the Fran Drescher comedy "The Beautician and the Beast," the teen rom-drama "Beastly," or even in an episode of "Hello Kitty's Furry Tale Theater." Recently, legendary Japanese filmmaker Mamoru Hosoda delivered "Belle," a magnificent animated sci-fi fantasy film that thrusts the tale out of the world of old and into the techno future.
The story takes place in the not-so-distant future where the internet has evolved into a legitimate virtual reality called U, where avatars are created by users' scanned biometric information. A teenager named Suzu creates an avatar named Belle who becomes a pop superstar, but everything changes when her virtual concert is interrupted by the seemingly undefeatable fighter The Dragon (or "The Beast"), who she quickly becomes infatuated with.

Will Packer says that he is “pulling” for Will Smith following the actor’s recent Instagram video statement over his behavior at the 2022 Oscars ceremony, during which he slapped Chris Rock on the Dolby Theatre stage.
In a new interview with Entertainment Tonight on the carpet of the producer’s new film The Beast, Packer shared his thoughts on Smith’s video apology to Rock and his family, his fellow Oscars attendees and his family.
The video also featured Smith answering commonly floated questions about his actions during and after the annual awards show, with him opening up about what fueled his decision to slap Rock after the Oscars presenter and comedian made an unscripted comment about Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald hairstyle ahead of announcing the best documentary winner.

Led by a special screening slot for celebrated documentarian Patricio Guzman’s “My Imaginary Country,” plus Directors’ Fortnights “1976” and a new short by 2018 Cinéfondation prizewinner Diego Céspedes in Critics’ Week, Chile boats the biggest presence of any Latin American country at Cannes.
“Our cinema is a living and pulsating entity, a cinema full of risky auteurist viewpoints that are capable of expressing our particular experiences in a universal way and at the same level playing field as bigger filmmaking territories, says CinemaChile executive director Constanza Arena, taking note of Chile’s strong showing.
“The directors of a new wave of Chilean cinema take on powerful themes with deep socio-historical weight, but with fresh stylistically innovation, whether it’s political trauma in ‘1976’ by Manuela Martelli, or the LGBTQ+ theme in ‘Las Criaturas que se Derriten Bajo el Sol’ by Céspedes. Updated February 8: Leading the Oscar nominees is the first stop-motion musical, “Robin Robin,” from the legendary Aardman (going for its fourth short win), partnered with Netflix, which tries for its second consecutive win. The other four in this eclectic, international field include “Affairs of the Art (Canada/U.K.), “Bestia” (Chile), “Boxballet” (Russia), and “The Windshield Wiper” (U.S./Spain).
“Robin Robin” is a 30-minute holiday short about how our differences make us stronger, created and directed by Dan Ojari and Mikey Please (BAFTA winner for “The Eagleman Stag”). It’s surely the favorite, as the Academy obviously adores Aardman. It’s about a charmingly awkward bird with an identity crisis, who is adopted into a loving family of burglar mice, which plans an ambitious heist to bag an entire sandwich.
“The Windshield Wiper,” directed by Alberto Mielgo, concerns a middle-aged man who sits in a cafe and ponders the meaning of love.

When the nominations for the 94th Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday, February 8, “The Power of the Dog” came out on top with a total of 12 bids. It landed everywhere we thought it would and even surprised us by garnering notices for its production design and sound as well as one for Jesse Plemons’s supporting performance.
The good news is that, over the last 10 years, nominations leaders have ended up with an average of three wins apiece. However, the only two to have nabbed the elusive Best Picture prize in that time are “Birdman” (2015) and “The Shape of Water” (2018). Last year’s most-recognized film, “Mank” (10 bids) lost the top honor to “Nomadland” (six).
Following “The Power of the Dog” on this year’s list of most-nominated films is “Dune” with 10 bids. Next are a pair of seven-time nominees: “Belfast” and “West Side Story.” “King Richard” is right behind with six.

The mighty “Dune” (from Warner Bros.) affirmed its craft dominance on Tuesday by grabbing eight out of a possible nine Oscar nominations (original song wasn’t in play). Thus, Denis Villeneuve’s sweeping and heady sci-fi ran the field with everything else: cinematography, costume design, editing, makeup/hair, original score, production design, sound, and visual effects. Historically, that puts “Dune” right behind “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” and “Titanic,” which both had nine craft noms.
The closest competitors with four noms were Jane Campion’s Netflix western, “The Power of the Dog”, and Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” remake at Fox/Disney — which was two shy of the 1961 original. Landing three noms were Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” at Searchlight/Disney and Daniel Craig’s James Bond finale, “No Time to Die,” at MGM/UA.

This was the inevitable fallout episode.
Abigail, Raelle, and Tally were still reeling on Motherland: Fort Salem Season 1 Episode 6.
The unit mates had a lot to unpack after Charval's wedding and the related Spree attacks on Motherland: Fort Salem Season 1 Episode 5.
Abigail had the most to deal with and was the least equipped to do so.
Being a Bellweather, she just had to shove her feelings down deep and soldier on despite losing Charval and nearly getting killed.
That was why she was being questioned so soon after the attack with those traumatic events flashing through her mind at the same time.
She was a chip off the old block, as General Petra was busy trying to identify the offensive spell the Spree had used to block the witches' powers.
Abigail refused to open up to either of her unit mates, not the touchy-feely Tally or the well-meaning Raelle,...

Risen is a modest but engaging riff on the old post-crucifixion Easter legend as told through the eyes of a non-believer. In 33 Ad Jerusalem, Roman occupiers are under threat of a Jewish uprising. The Jews claim a Nazarene named Yeshua (aka Jesus – played by Clifton Curtis) is the Messiah, so Pontius Pilate (Peter Firth) promptly has him crucified, then orders Roman officer Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) to witness the execution and help dispose of the body. Three days later Jesus’ corpse has vanished from its cave tomb, though the entrance was blocked with a boulder and watched by guards. Pilate orders Clavius and Lucius (Tom Felton), to find Jesus and his disciples at all costs, for fear that if they don’t quickly produce a corpse, the Jews will rise up. Thus begins a manhunt of biblical proportions.

"It's like a Syfy Channel movie with extra gore," is precisely how my friend, colleague, and astute schlock aficionado Peter S. Hall described the latest "direct-to-video" horror flick from Universal. "Does it seem like the movie has any connection to the Benicio del Toro remake of The Wolfman?", was my next question, and for that answer I had to watch the movie. Short answer: no. Louis Morneau's Werewolf: The Beast Among Us has no connection to Joe Johnston's The Wolfman. What we have here is a very broad, very obvious, and very low-budget piece of anachronistic period-piece horror silliness that, while peppered with familiar faces and (as Pete mentioned) enthusiastic moments of gruesome gore, amounts to little more than a goofy trip to Romania for a visit with some werewolf hunters that don't actually hunt werewolves all that frequently. The over-plotted and broadly written screenplay is overstuffed with subplots and extraneous characters,...

The avant-garde director's new film is a woozy homage to Homer and gangster movies. He explains his vision
Even with a new film to sell, Guy Maddin is not your standard-issue eager-to-please director. "So many people are baffled," he says, with well-practised irony. "The movie will be crystal-clear upon your third viewing." This is Keyhole, Maddin's ninth full-length film since 1988; and against all the odds it's secured a theatrical release in the UK. Most of Maddin's work simply doesn't get to Britain, so resolutely has he followed his own path.
If you know him at all, it is probably for his ballet film Dracula: Pages from a Virgin Diary, or just possibly My Winnipeg, his heartfelt docu-essay tribute to his Canadian hometown. More energetic cineastes may remember 2003's The Saddest Music in the World, Maddin's most determined shot at the mainstream, an elaborate parody musical starring Isabella Rossellini. The...
