With any new entry into a well-trod subgenre, it's always challenging to make the material feel a little fresher and more unique compared to what's come before. A number of thrillers have had hapless families discover the father/husband had a secret, dark past, making husbands secret murderers, reformed former criminals ("A History of Violence"), cheaters, liars with other families ("Frequent Flyer") or even secretive agents or heroes (humorously subverted in "Mr. and Mrs. Smith"). It's a tried-and-true background for a thriller, but the setup always presents a unique challenge: how could this very specific trope be pivoted to stand out in a crowded field?

We get told time and time again that we are in a golden age of television, and it’s impossible to deny that the expansion of the viewing landscape has resulted in a boon of creativity that can be seen in every single corner of the television globe. There are times throughout the brisk Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You where it appears directors Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady are attempting to suggest that this golden age was birthed some 40-odd years ago when Norman Lear was the centre of the small screen universe with a collection of series to his name that not only snagged record-busting ratings, but also critical acclaim and pop culture buzz that saw his shows watched by some 120 million American a week.
You could say he was like David E. Kelley...

Opening night at Sundance brought yet another high-profile world premiere documentary introduced by Robert Redford. Last year it was current Oscar nominee Liz Garbus's "What Happened, Miss Simone?," which was released by Netflix. This year it was Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady's "Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You," which will air on PBS's "American Masters" this fall and may wind up in the Oscar race as well. PBS' imprint American Masters Pictures and Music Box Films will release the film theatrically, while Netflix has exclusive subscription streaming for Us and Canada. Norman Lear "brought humanity, edge, humor and vulnerability into the mainstream," said Redford. "We owe him a great debt for that." Redford also thanked Lear for his early support of the struggling Sundance festival. The 93-year-old Lear, wearing his trademark cap, knew from his first meeting with Ewing and Grady that "these kids were a force,...

Some may say that television hasn’t been too good to senior citizens in terms of their stereotypical depictions. Regardless of the unflattering portrayals there had been some memorable oldsters (in this case over 60) that have given us equal shares of both laughs and cries. In “For Mature Audiences Only”, let’s take a look at some of the more mature characterizations that had an impact on our daily doses of entertainment on the glorious boob tube.
Instead of doing a typical top ten or top twenty listing let’s go in between with a top fifteen selection, shall we? The “For Mature Audiences Only” choices are not necessarily a tasting that everyone will agree on. Perhaps you have your own preferences that were omitted or something that you feel should be added? Anyway, here are the candidates in alphabetical order…
Now for our pop cultural Pepto Bismol personalities:

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Buried"
Directed by Rodrigo Cortes
Released by Lionsgate
"Paper Man"
Directed by Kieran and Michele Mulroney
Released by Mpi Home Video
While one can't feel too badly for the future "Green Lantern" star and People's sexiest man alive, Ryan Reynolds' two stabs at glory outside the beaten path went largely unseen, which is particularly a shame in the case of Rodrigo Cortes' "Buried," the thriller where Reynolds has no acting partner but a cell phone as a military contractor who finds himself trapped in a coffin with no knowledge of how or why he got there. A success at Sundance, Lionsgate scrapped expansion plans for the film when it didn't do well in limited release, so home video will be the first chance for many to catch it. Still, that was a considerably bigger success than "Paper Man," which snuck in...
