It seems as though the past few years have brought a resurgence of game shows, which were once a staple of both daytime and primetime television viewing. As a kid, I relished snow days and sick days when I could miss school and curl up on the sofa to watch all my favorites – “Pyramid,” “Family Feud” and “Password” were just a few. Every day after school I rushed through my homework so that I’d have time to watch “Tattletales” and “Tic Tac Dough.”

Game shows go all the way back to the days of radio, with one such program becoming the first game show to air on broadcast television – “Truth or Consequences” debuted on July 1, 1941, and before long the genre became a popular form of entertainment. All “Big Three” networks carried a variety of game shows on both daytime and primetime schedules until their popularity began to fizzle in the ’80s and ’90s.

She’s also been known to star in the television show ‘Cheers.’ However, there is more to the actress than the average fan will know. Comedian and actress Mitzi McCall of comedy duo McCall and Brill died Thursday at 93 years old, according to a statement from her representative. She died in Burbank at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, surrounded by loved ones.

McCall began in the 1950s and made a name for herself on the comedy scene. She was best known for her work as a team with her husband, Charlie Brill. They became mainstays on the era’s variety shows, including “The Ed Sullivan Show” — and were even on the episodes where The Beatles made their American debut.

“Mitzi McCall’s life was a testament to the power of laughter, and her influence on the world of comedy will be remembered for years to come,” the statement from her representative reads. “Her legacy will live on through the countless laughs she inspired and the doors she opened for future generations.”

Mitzi McCall, the delightful actress and sitcom writer who partnered with her husband, Charlie Brill, in a sketch comedy act that famously floundered between sets by The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show, has died. She was 93.

McCall died Thursday at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, her family announced.

The pint-sized Pittsburgh native also played the dry cleaner’s wife who wears a fur coat owned by Jerry’s mom on the 1994 Seinfeld episode “The Secretary,” and she was the mother of Carol Leifer’s optometrist character on the 1997-98 WB sitcom Alright Already.

McCall had a thriving career as a voiceover artist; she played Mother Goose on Mother Goose and Grimm and worked on other animated projects including The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show, Paw Paws, Darkwing Duck, Yo Yogi! and Ice Age (2002).

"Wkrp in Cincinnati" may not be easy to find on streaming these days, but it's still a highlight in sitcom history. The show about a failing radio station run by a groovy and eccentric team was a hit in the '70s, garnering 10 Emmy nominations and the coveted Humanitas Prize before signing off after four seasons. Unfortunately, the show's heavy emphasis on popular music has made it a rare quantity today: according to MTV, the show didn't make it to DVD until 2007 in part because it was tricky to secure the rights to all of the songs featured in its original run. It's currently only available digitally if you buy it on Apple TV, and versions of the show available today are still reportedly missing some songs, with stock music added in their place.

Nicholas Meyer's 1982 sci-fi flick "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" was the first major acting gig for Kirstie Alley. Up to that point, Alley had only appeared on the sci-fi sitcom "Quark" as well as a few game shows like "Match Game." Alley wasn't even wholly devoted to acting at that stage, treating it more like a side-hustle than a career. Actress and veteran soap writer Meg Bennett, who played Julia Martin on The Young and the Restless, has died at the age of 75. The Daytime Emmy winner passed away on April 11. “Meg lost her battle with cancer,” said her obituary in the Los Angeles Times. “Until nearly the end she was devotedly working with children, writing and engaging with her far-flung family and friends.” Born Helen Margaret Bennett, she grew up in Pasadena, California, and worked as a model before getting her acting and singing break starring off-Broadway in Godspell, followed by the original run of Grease on Broadway. She then landed the role of Liza Walton on the CBS soap Search for Tomorrow in 1974. She also appeared occasionally as a panelist on Match Game. In 1980 she joined Y&R as Julia Martin, the first of Victor Newman’s (Eric Braeden) nine wives, a role she played for six years.

A few years ago, after a few rough battles with the press and paparazzi and the cancellation of his MSNBC talk show, Alec Baldwin penned a much-publicized article announcing he’d be leaving “public life.” He reconsidered that departure and then appeared in the popular 2018 films “BlacKkKlansman,” “Mission Impossible: Fallout” and “A Star Is Born,” as well as the 2019 release “Motherless Brooklyn.” On the small screen, he appeared in the limited series “The Looming Tower,” recreated his recurring role on the reboot of “Will and Grace” and hosted “Match Game.”

Most notably Baldwin continued his appearances on “Saturday Night Live” lampooning Donald Trump. He made so many appearances in 2017 that he won an Emmy as Best Comedy Supporting Actor, his third career prize after his two leading wins for “30 Rock.”

This is the young lieutenant Saavik (Kirstie Alley), a half-Vulcan, half-Romulan officer who is as baffled by humanity as Spock was in his early Enterprise days. Shecky Greene, the legendary standup comedian known for his long tenure as a Las Vegas headliner and for working with Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, died Dec. 31 at his home in the city. He was 97.

Greene’s wife of 41 years, Marie Musso Greene, confirmed his death to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Greene was a regular on the TV talk show and guest star circuit in his 1960s and ’70s heyday, when he often sported a comb-over haircut and wide-lapel suits. Earlier in his career, he came to represent the epitome of the Rat Pack-adjacent comedian in a tux, delivering lightly risque or edgy anecdotal stories and zingers on stage.

Rachel Dratch used to be the ultimate "Oh, her!" comedian — the type of face and voice you'd always recognize, but whose name you might forget. Well, that didn't last long, because she was so memorable in tiny parts like "Southern Woman" ("Martin & Orloff") and "Female Mc" ("Winter Passing") at the outset of her career that she quickly grew into a beloved household name.

We know and love her now for her long tenure on "Saturday Night Live," where she helped create enduring characters like Debbie Downer, and in memorable roles in films like "Sisters," "Click," and "Just Go With It." Since she made her screen debut, Dratch has amassed an enormous 125 screen credits, and that's just counting individual projects, not episodes of TV, which would stretch into the multiple hundreds.

Those early years, where she was fighting for recognition with ounce inch of her comedic prowess, are well worth revisiting.

Conny Van Dyke, a singer-songwriter signed to Motown Records who starred in such films as “W.W. and the Dixie Dancekings” and “Framed,” has died. She was 78.

Van Dyke died on Nov. 11 at her home in Los Angeles due to complications of vascular dementia, her son Bronson Page told Variety.

The Detroit native was a longtime colon cancer and stroke survivor. She got her start in the entertainment industry when she was just 15 and a student in high school, making the film “Among the Thorns” with Tom Laughlin, Bill Wellman Jr. and Stephanie Powers. During that time, Van Dyke also worked as a songwriter for Wheelsville Records in Detroit.

The day Doctor Who announced Jinkx Monsoon was joining the Series 14 cast in ‘a major role’, social media went into an excited meltdown. The official announcement tweet got almost as much engagement as the 60th anniversary trailer and the video of Jodie Whittaker’s shock regeneration twist:

Gallagher, the comic famous for smashing watermelons onstage and drenching up-close crowd members, died today of organ failure at his Palm Springs home, a family member told NBC News. He was 76.

Leo Anthony Gallagher Jr. had been in ill health and suffered multiple heart attacks, his son-in-law told the outlet.

Thriving during the late ’80s/early-’90s Golden Era of stand-up comedy, Gallagher was a prop comic whose signature bit was deploying the “Sledge-o-Matic” — a wooden hammer he used to pulverize watermelons and other items. Audience members in the front rows were given the option to wear see-through plastic wraps to avoid the gooey mess.

He appeared in dozens of TV specials from 1980-2000 — many for Showtime — and on talk/variety shows including many visits to the The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He also appeared on David Letterman’s NBC and CBS shows, Howard Stern’s TV and radio...

Roll the credits. The 30th Annual Hamptons Film Festival concluded Sunday night in East Hampton with an out-of-competition sneak of “Glass Onion,” the “Knives Out” sequel. Expanded to 10 days from the usual long weekend, the tony east end Long Island event that draws a large number of local academy members saw Lukas Dhont‘s “Close” named Best Narrative Feature by the competition jury. Best Documentary Feature went to “Pray For Our Sinners” about the Catholic Church.

“The challenge for the last three years has been Covid,” Artistic Director David Nugent says. This year was in-person, no drive-ins, and masks were suggested, not mandatory. Most wore them into theaters and then took them off.

“I think ‘Living’ could do well at the Oscars,” Nugent told me. “I think ‘The Son,’ ‘The Whale,’ ‘Banshees of Inisherin‘ and ‘Empire of Light.’ We’ll see where everything lands in two months.”

The beloved “Aphrodite of the Accordion” and “The Love Goddess” Judy Tenuta died on Thursday in her home in Studio City, Calif. She died of ovarian cancer at age 72. Tenuta was a guest star in many television shows and movies and she hosted the popular HBO special, Women Of The Night, which featured contemporaries Ellen DeGeneres, Rita Rudner, Martin Short, and Paula Poundstone. Tenuta also appeared on Hollywood Squares, Celebrity Wife Swap, Who Wants to Date a Comedian?, and Match Game. She also appeared in a few “Weird Al” Yankovic videos. Tenuta was named after Judy Garland, and her mother, who was a fan of Lawrence Welk, urged her to learn to play the accordion. Her comedy career started out with Chicago’s The Second City, and she opened for comics such as George Carlin. She was the first “Best Female Comedian” winner at the American Comedy Awards. Judy Tenuta, an unconventional, often brash stand-up comic who guested on numerous TV shows and appeared in two “Weird” Al Yankovic videos, died October 6 of ovarian cancer in Studio City, CA. She was 72.

Known to fans as “The Love Goddess,” Tenuta’s stage act was delivered in a shrill, loud, sometimes gravelly voice and often included an accordion. Her style sometimes veered toward shock; one bit had an audience member near the stage open their mouth so she could drop her chewed gum in it.

But TMZ’s new documentary, What Really Happened to Richard Simmons, highlights a very different Simmons. The 45-minute exposé, which premiered on Fox on August 22, focuses on how Simmons chose to retreat from the public eye after being such a public figure for decades. With a resurgence of game shows on primetime television, “To Tell the Truth” made a fantastic comeback with ABC in 2016. Its latest reimagination, hosted by the beloved “Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson alongside Mama Doris, has captivated audiences.

If you’re looking for an entertaining game show to tune in to with your family or friends, you can enjoy the revival of this classic on ABC on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. Alternatively, if you prefer streaming online, you can find the latest seasons and episodes on ABC and Hulu. The show features a panel of four celebrities and three contestants. Of the three contestants, one plays the real character while the other two play impostors. Before the game begins, the host reads aloud something unusual about the real character that makes them identifiable.

ABC is the second broadcast network to announce its fall premiere dates, and it's business as usual.

The season gets underway Wednesday, September 21, with the season debuts of The Conners, The Goldbergs, Abbott Elementary, Home Economics, and Big Sky.

This will be a big test for Big Sky, which is moving from Thursday.

It is getting an injection of star power, courtesy of Jensen Ackles and Reba McEntire as the latest mystery gets underway.

Sunday, September 25, marks the series debut of Celebrity Jeopardy, as well as the returns of Celebrity Wheel of Fortune and The Rookie.

The Rookie is staying in the same slot, so the network is clearly happy with its performance.

Spinoff, The Rookie: Feds opens Tuesday, September 27 out of the season debut of Bachelor in Paradise.

The Good Doctor is earmarked for a Monday, October 3 return out of Bachelor in Paradise.

ABC is taking an aggressive approach...

ABC is the second broadcast network (following Fox) to reveal its fall premiere dates, with its slate set to unspool over three weeks in late September/early October.

The Wednesday sitcom block kicks things off on Sept. 21, now anchored by breakout comedy Abbott Elementary. The Season 3 premiere of Big Sky (now with Jensen Ackles and Reba McEntire!) closes out the night.

Cancellations/Renewals Scorecard: TV Shows Ended Or Continuing In 2021-22 Season

Missing from the list is Supermarket Sweep, which Deadline understands hasn’t been canceled but it’s not clear whether it will come back for a third season. Earlier this summer, the network canceled unscripted series including Match Game, Celebrity Dating Game, The Hustler and When Nature Calls.

America’s Funniest Home Videos returns for its 33rd season. Alfonso Ribeiro returns as host on the Vin Di Bona Productions-produced series, which is the longest-running primetime entertainment show in the history of ABC.

ABC has opened the proverbial envelope containing American Idol‘s fate — and the show will be back for another season.

The long-running singing competition — which will return for its 21st season overall, and sixth on ABC — was one of five unscripted series renewed at the Alphabet Net on Friday, along with The Bachelor (for Season 27), America’s Funniest Home Videos (Season 33), Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (Season 3) and Shark Tank (Season 14).

CBS’ new musical game show, Superfan, has set the roster of musicians participating in its upcoming six-episode series. The competition series will see one musical superfan aiming to prove they are a certain artist’s ultimate supporter. The artists confirmed are Kelsea Ballerini, Gloria Estefan, Little Big Town, LL Cool J, Pitbull and Shania Twain.

Also confirmed to host the musical game show are series executive producer Keltie Knight and CBS Mornings’ Nate Burleson. Production on the unscripted original begins this Friday in Los Angeles. A premiere date has yet to be set.

Superfan is billed as a musical spectacle disguised as a game show. It will feature contestants vying in multiple rounds of play to prove they are the ultimate fan. In each one-hour episode, a different musical artist will select one deserving superfan to win a once in a lifetime prize.
