The same year that he laid the groundwork for a horror revolution with Black Christmas, Bob Clark released Deathdream (also known as Dead of Night). The 1974 horror film is understandably overshadowed by his influential proto-slasher, but it was on Deathdream that the filmmaker honed his skills that would fuel his masterpiece of the genre: a brooding atmosphere, a calculated pace, a subtle score by Carl Zittrer that’s inseparable from the organic sound design, and even the use of a rocking chair to achieve unease.
Deathdream found Clark re-teaming with writer Alan Ormsby and several other cast and crew members from his 1972 film, Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things. While it suffers from minor pacing issues, Deathdream is significantly more well rounded. Jack McGowan’s cinematography is often flat (albeit an improvement over his work on Dead Things), but the budget – still limited but some five times larger than the...

In this shattering variation on “The Monkey’s Paw,” grief-stricken suburban parents (Academy Award nominees John Marley of The Godfather and Lynn Carlin of Faces) refuse to accept the news that their son Andy (Richard Backus) has been killed in Vietnam. But when Andy returns home soon after, something may be horribly wrong: Andy is alive and well…or is he? Produced and directed by Bob Clark (Black Christmas) and written by Alan Ormsby (Deranged), Deathdream was one of the very first films to confront the domestic ravages of the Vietnam War and remains one of the most chilling horror films of all time.

Midway through Bob Clark’s Deathdream (originally titled Dead of Night), Andy Brooks (Richard Backus) dons a pair of black leather gloves and sunglasses for an upcoming date. Andy displays a suave and calm demeanor that should be familiar to fans of Jean-Pierre Melville’s 1967 film Le Samouraï, which features Alain Delon as the ne plus ultra of psychotic cool; his haircut even recalls that of Steve McQueen in 1968’s Bullitt. However, Andy’s garb has a tactile purpose, concealing as it does his deteriorating skin, which will turn to dust without a replenishing supply of blood. Because of this, Clark’s genre film goes in the opposite direction of peddling cool, as Deathdream shows how a pair of designer shades can only momentarily shield the irreparable physical and psychological scars of war.
That Deathdream is a vehement anti-war statement can only be ascertained gradually, as Andy’s parents, Charles...

Renny Harlin’s career has come full circle, from low-budget horror and action films like Born American and Prison through blockbusters such as Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger before reverting back to budget-minded films like The Bricklayer and this film, Refuge. This time around, he’s bringing the horrors of war back home as a soldier’s encounter with the unexplained threatens the lives of everyone around him.
Sergeant Rick Pedroni is serving somewhere in Afghanistan when his unit takes a group of Taliban prisoner. Questioned about a nearby cave, they say there’s no more of them in there, in fact, none of them would go in there. Rick volunteers to check it out.

We believe it is safe to say that Spring is finally here in North America. Relatively safe. Pretty sure it is safe. Not only will April showers bring May flowers but May also sees the arrival of the new Danish horror flick Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever, and the UK horror flick, Stopmotion. Next month also sees the ongoing live watch parties every other Friday night of The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs. Four Toxic Avenger films are coming to the repertory programming next month. We don't know if Bob Clark's Deathdream and Buddy Giovinazzo's Combat Shock are considered part of the Namsploitation genre but they're two Nam-era horror flicks to keep an eye out for next month. While we still don't know what...

Eli Roth's 2023 slasher film "Thanksgiving" famously started its life back in 2007 in the form of a fake trailer sandwiched in between Robert Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" and Quentin Tarantino's "Death Proof," two movies released as a single mega-feature called "Grindhouse." The goal of "Grindhouse" was to recreate the experience of seeing a cheap exploitation double-feature in a run-down New York theater in the early 1980s, complete with film scratches, missing reels, and several previews for upcoming ultra-salacious genre movies. The trailers were all fake at the time, but since 2007, the trailers for "Machete," "Hobo with a Shotgun," and "Thanksgiving" have been made into real movies.
Roth, as the director's fans know, is a voracious cineaste, and has likely spent more time watching movies than most people. He also wears his influences on his sleeve; in the credits for Roth's 2013 cannibal film "The Green Inferno," he includes a list...

Pet Sematary has been sequelized, rebooted, and now with the arrival of Pet Sematary: Bloodlines it has a prequel. Adapting Stephen King’s works for the screen is a risky enough proposition, creating new stories based on them even more so as anyone whose seen a few Children of the Corn sequels or reboots can attest. King himself however seems to be happy with this film and tweeted:
“In the book, this is the story Jud Crandall tells Louis Creed to try and dissuade him from using the Pet Sematary,” wrote King. “The screenplay takes a few liberties, but it’s a fine story. David Duchovny is excellent. The secret, as always, is caring about the characters.”

Merry Creepmas, you filthy animals. The final day of Bloody Disgusting’s 12 Days of Creepmas is here, and it feels only fitting to celebrate with the reigning champion of holiday horror: Bob Clark’s Black Christmas.
In case you missed any of the holiday festivities, you can keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.
Released in 1974, Black Christmas has a simple setup on paper; over Christmas break, the residents of a sorority house are stalked and preyed upon by an unseen foe. Thanks to director Bob Clark and screenwriter Roy Moore, the plot isn’t quite so simple as it sounds thanks to a wonderfully complex cast of characters and character-driven moments that enhance the horror.
Scene-stealer Barb (Margot Kidder) is foul-mouthed and unapologetic, and her pranks or drunken quips ensure this sorority house is full of life. Barb is the precise type of handful that likely wears on housemother Mrs.

In Sean S. Cunningham's 1980 slasher flick "Friday the 13th," Kevin Bacon plays a camp counselor named Jack who meets a memorable end. Jack and his girlfriend Marcie (Jeannine Taylor) enjoy a zesty round of marijuana and coitus while, unbeknownst to them, the corpse of their friend Ned (Mark Nelson) is stored in the ceiling above them. Marcie leaves to take a shower, and Jack lays back on the bed to relax and have a toke. A drop of blood lands on his brow. Jack is momentarily confused. His confusion doesn't last long, however, as the hand of a mysterious killer -- possibly the presumed-dead Jason Voorhees -- pops up from under the bed and grabs him by the forehead. An arrow pushes up from underneath the bed, puncturing Jack's neck from behind. The arrowhead emerges from his throat, and blood spurts up onto his face. Jack dies wearing a startled expression.

101 Films presents the Bob Clark: Horror Collection, featuring the director’s highly influential horrors of the early 1970s, brought together for the first time. Though he would achieve wider success in the 1980s with hit comedies such as Porky’s (1981) and A Christmas Story (1983), Clark’s run of three horror movies a decade earlier — low budget horror-comedy Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things (1972), chilling Vietnam War critique Deathdream (Aka Dead of Night) (1974) and genre-defining slasher masterpiece Black Christmas (1974) — ensure his legacy as a master of the horror genre.

It’s a new dawn for Chile’s audiovisual industry. When Gabriel Boric, Chile’s youngest (at 35) and most left-leaning president since Salvador Allende, was elected in December, his pledge to more than double the state’s contribution to the arts was greeted with great fanfare.
After all, Chile’s prodigious film output this past decade has been remarkable despite the scant public support it has received.
“If everything we have achieved in the last 10 years was done with so little money, imagine what we can achieve with an increase in audiovisual funding!” says Constanza Arena, executive director of Chile’s film promotion org, CinemaChile.
In recent years, Chile has triumphed at the Oscars, starting when Pablo Larraín’s “No” was nominated for international feature in 2012, and culminating in an Oscar win for Sebastian Lelio’s “A Fantastic Woman” in 2017. Last Academy Awards season, Maite Alberdi’s documentary “The Mole Agent...

If you've seen "Creepshow," "Friday the 13th," or "Maniac," you've beheld the work of Tom Savini. The legendary fx artist has been in the game for over 40 years, from Bob Clark's '74 Monkey's Paw riff "Deathdream" to his feature directorial debut, a 1990 remake of George A. Foreseeing a relaxation of censorship on the horizon, England’s Titan Films filmed this mad surgery opus with far more gore and cruelty than was the norm in 1967-68, and their gambit paid off. Horror favorite Peter Cushing stars with Sue Lloyd, a pair nobody expected to show up in a shocker with such a high sleaze quotient. Pi’s special edition gives us three versions of the show including the continental cut with Cushing’s most lurid scene ever, and heaps of comment and analysis.

"You just keep your mouth shut, or your lights go out. You feel me?" Lionsgate has unveiled the first trailer for a gritty thriller called Night Walk, from Moroccan filmmaker Aziz Tazi. This originally premiered back in 2019 at the Moscow Film Festival, but is only now getting a direct-to-vod release. In this strange take on "Romeo and Juliet", star-crossed lovers are torn apart by cultural tensions between the East and the West. Sarah takes her American boyfriend Frank to her home country in the Arab world. After an incident during a night stroll, Frank is imprisoned by corrupt police for Sarah's murder. His quest for justice turns into a spiritual journey led by Muslim inmates, from the moderate convert to terror-linked fundamentalists. Netflix continues to dominate the streaming industry during the Halloween season by adding a lot of new titles each and every day. And the latest batch of movies and original series, releasing this coming week, certainly don’t look like they’ll disappoint.
Courtesy of the Covid-19 pandemic, the entertainment industry is currently in shambles. While a few directors, like Tenet‘s Christopher Nolan, push to reopen theaters with the necessary health precautions, dire circumstances have made this an impossibility for a lot of communities around the world. Luckily, streaming services have proven to be a great substitute for many people. Though in fairness, even before the global outbreak, these platforms were slowly turning into a preference in countless households.
I mean, imagine a juggernaut like Netflix, whose library of content spans several thousand movies, TV series, and documentaries, which you can access from the comfort of your sofa. Obviously,...

Looking for some space-based thrills and chills to enjoy this Halloween? Have no fear – or have a lot of fear, actually – Star Trek has you covered! We’ve listed 28 of the scariest episodes from across the franchise in order of just how much they freaked us out, so whether your preference is for deep space exploration, war-torn space stations, or the far reaches of the known universe, there’s something here for you.
This list excludes all of the feature films, which tend to be scarier on the whole as they’re aiming to make an impact on a cinema audience (Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan and Star Trek: First Contact have some especially terrifying sequences). It also excludes The Animated Series and Lower Decks. The Animated Series is seriously under-rated, but it’s bright, colourful style and slightly lighter tone don’t really bring the scares. Lower Decks features lots of blood,...

One of the most important and haunting collections of horror writing released in our time, Clive Barker's Books of Blood (comprising six volumes in total) are the inspiration for a new movie coming to Hulu. In support of the film's release this week, I had a chance to catch up with Clive Barker and director Brannon Braga, who talked about their favorite anthology horror movies, what makes Books of Blood so special, and working with their cast on this adaptation:
How did the two of you team up for this Books of Blood adaptation and what made you decide that an anthology feature format was the best way to tell this story?
Brannon Braga: I first met Clive in 1987, standing in line for two hours at a bookstore, to get his autograph. We would meet many years later, because like millions of people, I'm a huge fan of his books.

It’s a great time to be a horror fan. Not only are Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and Shudder awash with all kinds of horror movies old and new, but the Criterion Channel is getting in on the gruesome action with a month’s worth of horror titles from the 1970s.
The subscription service is the digital offshoot of the Criterion Collection, which for more than 35 years has been providing definitive archival home video versions of classic and contemporary films from around the world. Criterion launched its streaming service last year as a way to offer a curated cross-section of its library of films online.
Horror has always had a respectful home at Criterion, with the company publishing definitive editions of a number of the genre’s landmark films. The October rollout of horror movies for the Halloween season is similar to what other companies are doing, but the focus is the difference here.

Simon and Garfunkel’s song “The Sound of Silence,” with the unforgettable lyrics, “Hello, darkness my old friend,” contributes to the brilliance of the opening credit sequence of The Graduate (1967). The song would be a perfect fit for the dark, depressing “Return home from Vietnam” drama/undead horror classic Deathdream (1974). Deathdream didn’t score the same …

It’s officially a new month and a new week, which means we have a bunch of brand new Blu-ray and DVD releases headed home this Tuesday. The official start to summer is right around the corner, which makes this the perfect time for Steven Spielberg’s Jaws to swim its way into 4K waters for the very first time, in honor of the film’s 45th anniversary this year. And if that wasn’t cool enough, Oscar winner Parasite from filmmaker Bong Joon Ho is also getting a 4K release this week as well.
Kino Lorber is also keeping busy with a pair of Blu-rays to kick off their slate of releases for the month—Let’s Kill Uncle and They Came from Beyond Space—and if you’re a big Creepshow fan, you’re definitely going to want to pick up the new anthology series this week.

Stars: Andy Nyman, Martin Freeman, Paul Whitehouse, Alex Lawther, Leonard Byrne, Nicholas Burns, Jill Halfpenny | Written and Directed by Andy Nyman, Jeremy Dyson
Adapted from their own supernatural stage play, Ghost Stories is a lovingly crafted horror anthology from writing / directing duo Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson. Inspired by British portmanteau horror films like Dead of Night (1945) and Dr. Terror’s House of Horrors (1965), Nyman and Dyson have conjured up a creepy collection of terrifying tales that’s worthy of instant classic status.
Nyman plays Professor Philip Goodman, a TV investigator specialising in debunking the supernatural and exposing hoaxes. An early indication of both Goodman’s character and the nature of his work occurs early on, when he triumphantly confronts a fraudulent psychic just as he’s bringing comfort to a grieving mother who lost her son to leukemia – the confused and anguished expression on her face immediately gives the audience pause.

Average fans of A Christmas Story likely don’t know that director Bob Clark had once made creepy horror pictures with Alan Ormsby, but this independent shock effort of the early ’70s still casts a spell of dread. Although Vietnam is never mentioned, the war’s shadow strikes deep into the heart of a small-town family. John Marley and Lynn Carlin lead a fine cast.

We may only have several home entertainment releases for this Tuesday, but as the saying goes, “quality over quantity,” because this bunch of Blu-rays and DVDs are a stellar lot of films. One of my favorite horror films of 2017, Mark Duplass’ Creep 2, makes its way home on November 28th courtesy of The Orchard, and Scream Factory has given Rob Reiner’s adaptation of Stephen King’s Misery the Collector’s Edition treatment (and deservedly so).
For you cult film fans, both Death Laid an Egg and Deathdream (aka Dead of Night) get the HD treatment this week, and other notable releases this Tuesday include M.F.A., Rememory, Super Dark Times, Woodshock, and Trailer Trauma 4: Television Trauma.
Creep 2 (The Orchard, DVD)

The late, great Bob Clark will forever be synonymous with the holiday season thanks to his films Black Christmas and A Christmas Story, but before he brought those stories to life on screen, he gave horror fans the gift of Deathdream, aka Dead of Night (read our own Scott Drebit's Drive-In Dust Offs article on the film here). Over 40 years after its initial release, Deathdream is being revitalized in a 2K restoration Blu-ray from Blue Underground, and we have a look at a new video showing off the film's enhanced visuals.

A Christmas Story (1983) is screening at 7:30pm Thursday December 22nd at Schlafly Bottleworks – 7260 Southwest Ave St Louis, Mo 63143. Doors open at 6:30pm. It’s a fundraiser for Helping Kids Together. The film will be introduced by We Are Movie Geek’s own Tom Stockman!

First up we have an early effort from comedy maestro Bob Clark (Porky’S, A Christmas Story… Ok, Ok, he die-rected the original Black Christmas and Deathdream too) titled Children Shouldn’T Play With Dead Things.
