Based on the off-Broadway play of the same title that opened on 17 July 1971 at the Theatre de Lys (Lucille Lortel Theatre since 1981), 121 Christoper Street in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City and ran for 247 performances.
Voice-over dubbing was used to replace some "obscene" words so the film could receive a "PG" rating, and thus a wider release and a larger audience at the time.
