For more than two decades, Maria Menounos has been on TV. Whether it was interviewing celebrities on “Access Hollywood,” hosting a WWE special or a “Challenge” reunion or doing an arc on “One Tree Hill,” she’s been a staple on television. However, it wasn’t until this year that she landed the lead in her first film — and a TV Christmas movie was the ideal situation.
“I’ve never had to carry anything on my own,” says Menounos, who notes that both she and her husband, AfterBuzz TV creator Keven Undergaro, are “obsessed” with Christmas. “I have always wanted to be a part of the Christmas movie lineup. I put it on my vision board last year.”
The vision was brought to life. Last year, Ryan McPartland, who has appeared in a few holiday flicks over the years, brought it to her attention at the exact right time.

Prior to 1989, actor Leslie Nielsen was still best known for playing heavies and villains. Even when he appeared in comedy classics like "Airplane!" in 1980 or "Police Squad!" in 1982, his comedic power was derived from his ability to stay stonefaced while absurdity explodes around him. 1989, however, saw the release of "The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!" a film adaptation of the TV show. In that film, Nielsen played the role of Lt. Frank Drebin broadly, doing a lot of mugging and pratfalls. "The Naked Gun" was an enormous hit the year it was released, and Nielsen went full-bore into slapstick roles and spoof movies after that.
During the 1990s, Nielsen appeared in a litany of gloriously silly flicks like "Spy Hard," "Wrongfully Accused," "Repossessed" (a classic), "Dracula: Dead and Loving It," two of the "Scary Movie" sequels, and many others. Not all of these films were good, but...

Jules Bass, one half of the legendary animation team Rankin/Bass, has died. He was 87.
Jules Bass’ career is forever linked to Arthur Rankin Jr.–which certainly isn’t a bad thing, since the duo played major roles in creating some of the most iconic Christmas movies ever.
Rankin/Bass was of course best known for their holiday classics Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964), Frosty the Snowman (1969), Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town (1970), and so many more. But now that it’s October, let’s not forget Mad Monster Party? (1967), which had the benefit of the voice talents of Boris Karloff, who lent his distinct vocals as Baron Boris von Frankenstein, a take on Victor Frankenstein, the creator of Karloff’s most famous role of Frankenstein’s Monster.

Jules Bass, the animator, producer, director and composer whose work included stop-motion holiday television specials like “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town,” died at the age of 87 on Tuesday at an assisted living facility in Rye, New York, publicist Jennifer Fisherman-Ruff confirmed.
The three prominent holiday specials, “Rudolph,” voiced by Burl Ives, “Frosty” starring Jackie Vernon and Jimmy Durante and “Santa Claus,” voiced by Fred Astaire and Mickey Rooney, all debuted during the 1960s and 1970s. In the decades since, the specials have become staples of seasonal holiday programming on television.
Bass was known for his longstanding creative partnership with director Arthur Rankin Jr., who died in 2014 at 89. The two pushed many productions through their banner Rankin/Bass Productions, which was known for its laborious cel-animated, stop-motion films that took long periods of time to turn into full-length features.

Paul Coker Jr., whose character and production designs for the classic Rankin/Bass stop-motion and animated holiday specials and his many years as one of Mad magazine’s “Usual Gang Of Idiots” endeared him to generations of fans, died following a brief illness at his home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on July 23. He was 93.
His death was confirmed to Deadline by his stepdaughter Lee Smithson Burd. “Paul was lucid and had his remarkable sense of humor until the end,” Smithson Burd said.

Kevin McHale and Justin Thorne first worked together when they were members of the boy band Nlt in the mid-aughts. Now, the two are thinking about a bear band.
McHale, best known for his work as Artie on “Glee,” and Thorne are the creators of the AlphaBeatZ, five animated singing and dancing teddy bears; they launched the group over the holidays with a short video on social media featuring the cuddly creatures coming to life in a young boy’s bedroom and performing a portion of the original tune “Christmas Everyday.” They also released “The AlphaBeatZ Christmas!,” a five-song EP of holiday music, including covers of “Feliz Navidad” and “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town.”
The AlphaBeatZ are voiced by McHale, Thorne, McHale’s “Glee” co-star Jenna Ushkowitz, Chris Moy and Shelby Rabara.
“We joke that it’s the Spice Girls meets One Direction but for kids,” Thorne tells me.

Mac DeMarco tackled “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” for his annual holiday tune, adding a soft-rock sheen to the seasonal staple.
The singer-songwriter adopts just the right amount of crooner vibrato on the track, pairing nicely with his woozy keys and loping drum groove.
In a lo-fi, reliably playful video, DeMarco sings, smiles and sways in front of mountains and next to a massive inflatable Santa Claus. He even plays the breezy guitar solo in the clip, which features the location tag of “Santa’s Workshop, North Pole, NY.

The Simpsons did not get to enjoy the long holiday weekend as much as most families.
The long-running Fox animated comedy slipped to a season-low rating last night, registering a 0.7 among adults 18-49, according to Nielsen. That was mainly due to Fox’s lack of a late-afternoon NFL overrun. Instead, an original episode of “The Simpsons” followed a pair of reruns.
NBC and “Sunday Night Football” easily topped primetime. CBS, which had an NFL game leak into primetime, was the night’s runner up.

NBC was first in ratings with a 4.7 rating/20 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 16.3 million, according to preliminary numbers. Those were the Nielsen averages for 90-minute pregame series “Football Night in America” and the New England Patriots-Houston Texans game itself.

I bought it for myself, but this was my Christmas present, arriving in the mail from England on Christmas Eve: a fifteen-cd set containing five epic Springsteen concerts from the legendary Darkness on the Edge of Town tour. When the Cleveland deejay who emceed the show for Wmms-fm introduced the band by saying, "Round for round, pound for pound, there ain’t no finer band around," he wasn't just rhyming, he was telling the truth.
Why, you ask, did this set come from England? Well, it's an unauthorized collection of bootlegs, but in Europe, radio recordings are public domain, so this is actually a legal release.
The word went out through the fan network I ordered it on Amazon U.K. before the release date. Perhaps Bruce doesn't get a penny out of this, but I've seen it suggested that writers' royalties would still have to be paid. Either way,...

After the smashing success of President Obama's summer sex playlist, the White House is releasing not one, but two dueling holiday playlists — one from the Obamas and the other from the Bidens. Which to choose? It's a battle between rock and soul. The Bidens go with a lot of classic rock, kicking off their playlist with Bruce Springsteen's "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" (the Boss also sings "Merry Christmas Baby") and closing out with Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime." There's some more contemporary stuff in there like Coldplay's "A Sky Full of Stars" and Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett's "Cheek to Cheek," but this is the playlist you might hear at your aunt's Christmas party. The Obama playlist is, let's say, for more intimate times. It begins with jazz, a Vince Guaraldi arrangement of "O Tannenbaum," before hitting R&B classics like "Let It Snow" by...

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey's return to the Saturday Night Live stage this week was just as hilarious as we expected, if not more. In between their Christmas song mashup and their "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" performance, the ladies teamed up for an epic "Dope Squad" skit, parodying Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" video. The short features Tina and Amy introducing their squad to Aidy Bryant, who plays a reporter, and includes fun appearances by their nannies, their real-life gynecologist and pal Amy Schumer. As an added bonus, the women are all dressed up in postapocalyptic leather outfits and have names like Powderkeg and Shortfuse. Of course, this isn't the first time Tina and Amy have poked fun at Taylor. While hosting the 2013 Golden Globes, the comedians jokingly warned Taylor to stay away from Michael J. Fox's son, and shortly after, Taylor responded to their joke...

During Taraji and Terrence's White Hot Holidays special on Wednesday night, Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard got everyone in the holiday spirit with Christmas carols, jokes, and a scarily accurate spoof of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. In between John Legend singing "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town" and Mary J. Blige's gorgeous version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," the Empire stars and cohosts poked fun at Kim and Kanye's egos, their obsession with Instagram, and, of course, Kim's butt. Watch the hilarious skit above, and then check out Cookie's best moments from Empire!

'Tis the season to annoy everyone by using "'tis the season" way too many times when talking about holiday stuff. Halloween hasn't even happened yet, but the Christmas decorations are already taking over drug stores so ABC is just going ahead and announcing its 2015 holiday lineup. It's something to look forward to after the candy is gone, anyway, and since the "Toy Story 20th Anniversary Special" and "It's Your 50th Christmas, Charlie Brown" are involved, you should definitely mark your calendars.

Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney has died at the age of 93. Born Joseph Yule Jr. in 1920s Brooklyn, Rooney's career began at an early age on stage with his vaudeville acting parents. From there, at age 6, he went on to make his first film Not to Be Trusted (1926), and thus began a decade long career with MGM making silent films. When it comes to child stars, there's Rooney and there's everyone else. While modern child stars are lucky to be in 2 films a year, Rooney starred in upwards of nine movies a year, including the Depression-era Andy Hardy comedies he made with fellow child star Judy Garland. Like a lot of child stars, he struggled to find great parts as an adult and his tabloid life seemed to overshadow his film output. He was married nine times over the course of his life, but no marriage was more notable than the one to Ava Gardner.
