Hello, everyone! Now that September is nearly upon us (which means we’re getting closer and closer to our favorite season), we have one last round of home entertainment releases ahead of us before we can finally bid August a fond farewell - and there are a lot of different titles making their way home tomorrow. Arrow Video is keeping busy this week with their 4K release of Dune as well as the special edition release of The Brotherhood of Satan, and Kino Lorber is resurrecting several classics on Blu-ray this Tuesday, including The Raven, The Last Man on Earth, and The Comedy of Terrors.

Next to Universal, few studios have had such a big impact on horror than Rko Radio Pictures. Started in 1927, Rko was the first studio founded to make exclusively sound films, a then-brand-new invention that served as a major draw for the studio. Rko’s life was relatively short (it was killed just 30 years after forming), but during their time, they put out a seriously impressive number of classics, including Top Hat, It’s a Wonderful Life, The Informer, and most notably, Citizen Kane.

Of course, Rko didn’t shy away from horror. While their output wasn’t nearly as prolific as, say, Universal’s, it was still quite impressive, boasting some of the most formative and important horror films of old Hollywood. We’ve got another busy week of horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases on the horizon as August 11th has a great variety of titles both new and old to get excited about. Scream Factory is releasing their Collector’s Edition Blu-ray for Wes Craven’s The People Under the Stairs and Kino Lorber has dug up another great cult classic, War-Gods of the Deep, and given it an HD overhaul as well. Unfriended is also coming home on Blu and DVD and Universal is finally releasing James Wan’s Dead Silence on Blu-ray, featuring an unrated version of the underrated film. And for all you DC Comics fans out there, get ready for a ton of titles making their debut this week on Blu courtesy of Warner Home Video.

Today is Vincent Price’s 104th Birthday! Price was born here in St. Louis on this date in 1911 and is the most iconic movie star to hail from our city. Price, who died October 25th 1993, was also a gourmand, author, stage actor, speaker, world-class art collector, raconteur, and all-around Renaissance man. Vincent Price was simply one of the most remarkable people of the 20th Century. Four years ago we had the opportunity to celebrate his 100th birthday and St. Louis was the place to do it. I teamed up with Cinema St. Louis to present Vincentennial, The Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, an event that lasted through much of the Spring of 2011. The following year Vincentennial won two coveted Rondo Awards, one for “Best Fan Event” and a second for myself as “Monster Kid of the Year” for directing the event. We're back with a special round-up, taking a look at three upcoming horror film Blu-rays, two of which star the legendary Vincent Price. Scream Factory revealed the bonus features for the anthology horror film, From a Whisper to a Scream, Kino Lorber has announced they're bringing Jacques Tourneur's War Gods of the Deep, a.k.a. The City Under the Sea, out on Blu-ray with a new extra, and Olive Films has slated a Satan's Blade 30th anniversary Blu-ray for a spring release.

We’ll be celebrating the 5th year anniversary of Super-8 Movie Madness at The Way Out Club in St. Louis on Tuesday October 7th with an encore performance of our most popular show. It’s Super-8 Vincent Price Movie Madness in 3D, the show that we took on the road to promote Vincentennial back in 2011. We’ll be honoring the hometown horror hero by showing condensed (average length: 15 minutes) versions of several of Price’s greatest films on Super-8 sound film projected on a big screen. They are: Master Of The World, War-gods Of The Deep, Pit And The Pendulum, The Raven, Witchfinder General, Tim Burton’s Vincent, Two Vincent Price Trailer Reels, Abbott And Costello Meet Frankenstein and The Mad Magician in 3D (We’ll have plenty of 3D Glasses for everyone)

As the undisputed king of American gothic, Vincent Price holds a unique position regarding his association with British horror. From the mid sixties, nearly all his films were made in the UK, and while not as distinguished as The House of Usher (1960), Tales of Terror (1962) and The Raven (1963), they are not without interest. As an actor perfectly suited to English gothic, Price’s output includes two career-defining performances. In a nutshell, he had the best of both worlds.

The British phase of his career began with a bang. After directing all of Price’s Poe chillers for American International Pictures, Roger Corman wanted to give the formula a fresh approach by making his next film in England. Aip’s Samuel Z Arkoff and James H Nicholson had already produced several European films, so the next step was to establish a London base with Louis M Heyward in charge.

Our latest video find comes from the recently-released album Elite from Massachusetts metallers Within the Ruins. In this clip, directed by Kevin J Custer, the band's brutal serving of hardcore & melodic death metal is just one course of a seriously sick dinner party, which illustrates the old adage “You are what you eat.” Within The Ruins - Feeding Frenzy Speaking of sick: Within the Ruins has lined up some new dates for their current “Sick Tour II” tour, where they'll be joined by fellow three-named hardcore bands Betraying the Martyrs and Buried in Verona. Next month they will hit the road again with I Declare War, Reflections and City in the Sea for the “Good Fight” tour, followed by the “Road to Metal Fest” with After the Burial. Vincentennial, the Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, which took place here in St. Louis last Spring and was covered in depth at We Are Movie Geeks, has been nominated for a Rondo Award for “Best Fan Event”. Now in their tenth year, The Rondo Awards are prestigious Fan Awards given out annually for the year’s best horror-related stuff–movies, magazines,articles, toys, etc. The Rondos are completely fan-based; nominees are selected by horror film fans and focus specifically on the horror genre. The awards are debated at The Classic Horror Film Board and presented at the Wonderfest Hobby Expo in May in Louisville, Ky. The awards are named for Rondo Hatton, the 1940′s-era character actor whose glandular disease resulted in a misshapen face and brutish appearance (an article I wrote for Wamg about Mr. Hatton can be found Here)

Today at Westminster Hall in Baltimore, the burial site of Edgar Allan Poe, The Raven director James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) and co-star Luke Evans (Immortals) will be engaging with press – as well as members of the Poe House and Museum – to kick off the film’s publicity campaign.

To celebrate Poe’s life and support the upcoming release of Relativity Media’s The Raven on March 9, 2012, black-wrapped cars, mannequins, and trash cans with “Rip Eap” emblazoned on them, along with Qr codes that linked to today’s debut of the trailer at apple.com, appeared in the Fells Point section of Baltimore, Maryland.

Tonight at 10pm at the Way Out is our Vincentennial edition of Super-8 Vincent Price Movie Madness. We’re starting at 10pm because there is a 7pm screening of Witchfinder General at brown Hall on the campus of Washington University that no Vincent Price fan in St. Louis will be missing. I’ve now added a special screening to the festivities at The Way Out Club. At 11:30pm, I’m showing a 16mm print of Dr Goldfoot And The Girl Bombs, Price’s 1966 collaboration with legendary director Mario Bava. This is a superb technicolor print of a movie generally considered one of Price’s worst but is actually a film that has aged into kitschy, campy fun.
