La marca del hombre lobo.Jacinto Molina grew up in Francoist Spain, the son of an extremely successful furrier. As a young boy, he was surrounded by death in the aftermath of the civil war, losing friends and family members, and passing corpses in the streets and fields around Madrid. Two of Molina’s uncles, both collectors who ran in artistic circles, introduced him to a bohemian lifestyle and range of interests. He met famous painters (Jose Gutierréz Solana), writers (Camilo José Cela), and matadors (Manolete); he was entranced by comic books, the movies, and the occult. When, at his elite boarding school, he was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he knew to respond with the respectable aspiration of “architect.” Instead, he would become Paul Naschy.Naschy is now synonymous with a mid-century surge in Gothic Eurohorror that replicated in continental Europe the success of Hammer Films in the UK.

There’s No Such Thing as Zombies isn’t so much a comedy about the zombie apocalypse as it is the story of three people, Carlotta, her husband Paul and his old school friend Colin.
When Colin’s bragging gets on Paul’s last nerve, Carlotta gives him a “vitamin” which Colin recognizes as Troxidil, a powerful antidepressant that also doubles as male birth control by decreasing sperm count. This really doesn’t sit well with Paul, not only was he being lied to, he was being prevented from starting the family he wanted.
At this point, we cut away to The Hunt and Christina Show, whose hosts are also talking about Troxidil, specifically allegations that it causes the dead to rise. They’ll soon be joined by Victoria Winkelhauser a...

Roger Corman's 1960 feature films "House of Usher" was the first film in a long series of Edgar Allan Poe-based movies at American International Pictures. From 1960 to 1964, Corman directed eight Poe films, with all but one of them starring Vincent Price. After "House of Usher," Corman made "The Pit and the Pendulum," "The Premature Burial," the anthology film "Tales of Terror," "The Raven," "The Haunted Palace," "The Masque of the Red Death," and "The Tomb of Ligeia." Technically, 1963's "The Haunted Palace" isn't a Poe movie. It was named after Poe's 1893 poem but was in fact based on the 1927 short novel "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" by H.P. Lovecraft. Poe, it seems, was a bigger marquee name than Lovecraft, so the latter author's story was merely folded into Corman's short-lived but well-remembered Poe subgenre.

It was more than a little heartening to see Roger Corman paid tribute by Quentin Tarantino at Cannes’ closing night. By now the director-producer-mogul’s imprint on cinema is understood to eclipse, rough estimate, 99.5% of anybody who’s touched the medium, but on a night for celebrating what’s new, trend-following, and manicured it could’ve hardly been more necessary. Thus I’m further heartened seeing the Criterion Channel will host a retrospective of Corman’s Edgar Allan Poe adaptations running eight films and aptly titled “Grindhouse Gothic,” though I might save the selections for October.
Centerpiece, though, is a hip hop series including Bill Duke’s superb Deep Cover, Ghost Dog, and numerous documentaries––among them Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, making Michael Rapaport a Criterion-approved auteur. Ten films starring Kay Francis and 21 Eurothrillers round out series; streaming premieres include the Dardenne brothers’ Tori and Lokita,...

The legendary Corman-Poe Cycle gets a comprehensive spotlight in the brand new book Corman/Poe: Interviews and Essays Exploring the Making of Roger Corman’s Edgar Allan Poe Films, 1960-1964, which is Now Available from Headpress Books.
Written by Chris Alexander with a foreword by Roger Corman, the book is illustrated with dozens of photographs and stills, many of which have never been published before.
Produced on modest budgets for American International Pictures, iconic independent film director Roger Corman’s adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe stories were popular in their time as escapist horror cinema. Most starred horror icon Vincent Price and were written (and “freely adapted”) by the likes of Richard Matheson, Charles Beaumont and Robert Towne. Today the series is recognized as unique and sophisticated, one that delivers decadent Gothic chills while exploring ideas of faith, sexuality, psychology and the supernatural.

To celebrate the release of Watcher – released on DVD & Blu-ray 6th February – we have a Blu-ray up for grabs!
The debut film from Chloe Okuno is a sleek, remarkably assured thriller that puts a thoroughly modern spin on Hitchcock’s classic Rear Window. Featuring a superb cast including Maika Monroe (It Follows), Karl Glusman (The Neon Demon) and Burn Gorman (The Dark Knight Rises), Watcher was nominated for awards at Sundance and SXSW festivals, and won Best Feature at last year’s Boston Underground Film Festival.
The film features a really outstanding central performance from Monroe (who shot to fame in the horror phenomenon It Follows in 2014), as a young woman who begins to think something is amiss when she spots a lone figure staring at from the window of a neighbouring flat. Recalling Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby, Monroe is note-perfect as a woman in alien surroundings, plagued with lurking anxiety,...

Wally Campo, the Roger Corman regular who did his best Det. Joe Friday impersonation as Sgt. Joe Fink — and also served as the narrator — in the original The Little Shop of Horrors, has died. He was 99.
Campo died Jan. 14 of natural causes in Studio City, his son, musician Tony Campodonico, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Campo also played a goofball in Monte Hellman‘s Beast From Haunted Cave (1959) and appeared for director Burt Topper in Hell Squad (1958), Tank Commandos (1959) — where he was top-billed — and the Victor Buono-starring The Strangler (1964).
Campo showed up in the Corman-directed Machine-Gun Kelly (1958), Ski Troop Attack (1960) and Tales of Terror (1962) and in the Corman-produced Devil’s Angels (1967). Many of his movies were made at the filmmaker’s low-budget American International Pictures.
His acting credits also included Edward Dmytryk’s Warlock (1959), the Vincent Price-starring Master of the World (1961) and Shock Corridor (1963), directed by Sam Fuller.

Mandy is a 2018 action/horror film. It is a bloody, trippy, stylish movie which shows revenge served as cold as it gets. When you see Nicholas Cage take off on a revenge mission armed with an axe and a crossbow – the latter weapon has a name, by the way – you realize you expect Cage to be armed with an axe and a crossbow – one with a name, hell yeah.
Be prepared to see more blood than a heart surgeon sees as this tale of an unhinged man avenging his wife’s murder spins off into the ozone. There is no denying that the bad guys have it coming to them – they are the sort of bad guys who scare away other bad guys. And, if you’ve ever wondered how you would handle this kind of revenge situation – I’ll bet you’d want to handle it just like Cage’s character does.

There are few horror blankets warmer to me than the Roger Corman Poe adaptations the director made with star Vincent Price in the 1960s. More than the familiarity of Hammer horror, more than the delicious junk food that is the slasher genre, the Corman/Poe cycle feels like October. Not even my beloved Universal Monsters offer the same amount of comfort, the same sense of seasonal mood. These are movies that I turn to every year to set the tone for October.
Because his name has become so synonymous with penny-pinching schlock—cheap movies shot on the quick, minimum investment for maximum return—it’s often overlooked that Roger Corman was a great director. For evidence of this, look no further than his Edgar Allan Poe adaptations, a series of eight films Corman made between 1960–1965, beginning with House of Usher and culminating with The Tomb of Ligeia. The House of the Seven Gables
Blu ray
Kino Lorber
1940 / 1:33:1 / 89 Min.
Starring Margaret Lindsay, Vincent Price, George Sanders
Written by Lester Cole
Cinematography by Milton R. Krasner
Directed by Joe May
In 1940’s The House of the Seven Gables, Margaret Lindsay transforms from sunny romantic to stone-faced recluse in the blink of an eye – her startling performance gives a 20th century hot foot to Universal’s 19th century melodrama.
Published in 1851, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel is set during the new era of enlightenment – a superstitious few may resist but the wheels of change are turning – just not fast enough for the Pyncheon family, a seemingly cursed dynasty plagued by corruption and cruelty.
Lindsay plays Hepzibah Pyncheon whose lover Clifford has been framed by his brother Jaffrey for the death of their father. A cold-blooded fop maintaining the family’s avaricious tradition, Jaffrey covets the distinctly gabled ancestral home and its hidden treasures.

In Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Black Cat” (1843) a large feline named Pluto follows the narrator “with a pertinacity which it would be difficult to make the reader comprehend.” Poe’s narrator struggles to put into words how, exactly, this pursuit fills him with terror. Cinema has provided a solution to capturing the elusive, uncanny cat: its quiet steps, eerily graceful jumps, gleaming eyes, and mythologized ability to dodge death nine-fold. Unlike dogs, cats are more independent and can’t be relied on to come when they’re called. Cats are expert at hiding, fitting into unbelievably tiny spaces, and their claws are extremely sharp. Hovering in the liminal field between wilderness and domestication, the house cat is often used in horror to parallel the genre’s interest in showing the disintegration of the home or domestic life into chaos. Poe’s story has been loosely adapted as a horror film several times,...

Melvins formed a few years before anyone used the word “grunge” as the name of a genre, but they embodied the term perfectly with their deep, sludgy riffs and left-of-center songwriting. Since 1984, they’ve released dozens of albums of uncompromising and sometimes experimental music, and constantly challenged rock norms. When we compiled our recent list of the 50 Greatest Grunge Albums, two of their standout LPs — 1991’s Bullhead and 1993’s Houdini — made the cut.

Want to enhance your horror movie? Make sure you sign up a cat...
This feature contains broad spoilers for several horror movies featuring cats, including Alien, Cat People, Drag Me To Hell, Fallen, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Pet Sematary and The Voices.
The relationship between humans and cats over time has given way to a number of cultural impressions and outright superstitions. Ancient Egyptians associated them with gods. In the Middle Ages, they were linked with witches and killed en masse, which probably hastened the spread of the Black Plague through the rodent population. And in the modern day, it's interchangeably lucky or not if a black cat crosses your path.
Like anything with such a wide array of symbolic links, movies have presented cats as characters in different ways over the years. It's their abiding association with the supernatural – whether as an omen...

Sony continues to shore up plans for its Spider-Man-free Spider-Man Cinematic Universe, announcing today that it’s set a title and release date for the previously announced Black Cat/Silver Sable movie. Silver And Black—combining two of Spidey’s amazing friends (and their shared interests in kicking butt while wearing anatomically improbable skin-tight body suits)—will arrive in theaters on February 8, 2019. The studio’s Venom movie, meanwhile, is set for October 5, 2018; neither film is expected to feature Tom Holland’s Peter Parker.
Silver And Black is being directed by Love & Basketball director Gina Prince-Bythewood, who’s also reportedly involved with Freeform’s Cloak And Dagger series. The film will track the adventures of cat burglar Felicia Hardy (a.k.a. The Black Cat), and foreign mercenary Silver Sable (whose real name is “Silver Sablinova,” because sometimes comic books are kind of great).

Earlier this year, the great imaginer and a few friends had more sights to show you in the graphic novel Hellraiser: Anthology, and now Clive Barker's Seraphim Comics has revealed a September release and an eclectic set of preview pages for the sequel, Hellraiser: Anthology Volume Two.
Press Release: Clive Barker’s Seraphim Comics has announced Hellraiser: Anthology Volume Two, a sequel to the cult hit graphic novel released in April.
Hellraiser: Anthology Volume Two will be released in September, debuting at Son of Monsterpalooza in Burbank, CA and available a week after via www.realclivebarker.com, both as a hardcover graphic novel and a digital download.
The anthology will feature stories written by returning Hellraiser comic scribes Ben Meares, Christian Francis, Mark Alan Miller, David McKendry & Rebekah McKendry and Matt. Murray, as well as newcomers to the series Zac Thompson & Lonnie Nadler (The Dregs) and Ken Winkler. Artists include returning Hellraiser alumni Daniele Serra (who provides the cover along with a six-page story), Riley Schmitz, Jim Terry and Nick Percival, along with newcomers to the series Mark Torres (Zombies Vs. Robots: Undercity, Judge Dredd), Hector Casanova (The Lurkers, Screamland), Christian Dibari (Hoax Hunters, Magdalena), Simon Gough (GI Joe: Snake Eyes), Devmalya Pramanik (Nightbreed) and Nino Cammarata (The Black Cat).
Additionally, the graphic novel will feature a prose story detailing the origin of the fan-favorite Cenobite the Chatterer, written by the Chatterer himself, Nicholas Vince. The tale will feature pen and ink illustrations by Clive Barker.
“I’m beyond excited to finally share a story I drafted in December 2012,” Vince said in regards to his contribution to the anthology, titled Prayers of Desire. “It’s worth the wait, as it’s found it’s spiritual home beside wonderful illustrations by Clive and amongst superb storytellers.”
The anthology is edited and compiled by Ben Meares and designed and lettered by Christian Francis.
“I think, with the first anthology, we managed to put out a book that reminded people why Hellraiser works so well in comics,” Ben Meares, Editor-in-Chief of Seraphim Comics said. “It’s a wildly versatile mythos, and with this second volume we get to explore with even more variety the possibilities within the world that Clive has so graciously allowed us to play in. Volume Two will feature more stories, more pages and more creators than Volume One. I’ve been absolutely floored with the kinds of original, fresh and brilliant stories everyone involved has contributed.”
“I’m so thankful to everyone who helped make the first volume such a smashing success despite us trying our hardest to offend everyone, “ said Mark Alan Miller, Vice President of Clive Barker’s Seraphim, Inc. and contributing writer. “It’s so much fun to have the opportunity to do it all over again.”

Edgar G. Ulmer movies on TCM: 'The Black Cat' & 'Detour' Turner Classic Movies' June 2017 Star of the Month is Audrey Hepburn, but Edgar G. Ulmer is its film personality of the evening on June 6. TCM will be presenting seven Ulmer movies from the mid-1930s to the mid-1960s, including his two best-known efforts: The Black Cat (1934) and Detour (1945). The Black Cat was released shortly before the officialization of the Christian-inspired Production Code, which would castrate American filmmaking – with a few clever exceptions – for the next quarter of a century. Hence, audiences in spring 1934 were able to witness satanism in action, in addition to other bizarre happenings in an art deco mansion located in an isolated area of Hungary. Sporting a David Bowie hairdo, Boris Karloff is at his sinister best in The Black Cat (“Do you hear that, Vitus? The phone is dead. Even the phone is dead”), ailurophobic (a.

Sony has been making news recently with all sorts of Spider-Man spinoff movie news. From new information about Tom Hardy playing Venom in a solo Venom film to a title for the Black Cat and Silver Sable film, Sony wants people to know that they are still a capable superhero film powerhouse. Much to everyone's horror, Sony continues to make headway with their "Spider-Man Universe," that seemingly won't involve Spider-Man at all, instead focusing on characters such as Venom, Silver Sable, and Black Cat, while Marvel Studios shares custody of good ole' web-head within the completely separate Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Venom film came together fast, with Sony already securing Tom Hardy to play Eddie Brock/Venom, Ruben Fleischer to direct, and a release date of October 5, 2018. Now we're beginning to receive important details, at an alarming rate, concerning another "Spider-Man spinoff," focusing on Silver Sable and Black Cat. It was already announced that Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) is penning the most recent draft, following Lisa Joy's (HBO's Westworld) work on the script, but now we have a title, director, and possible synopsis for the film.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Gina Prince-Bythewood will be directing the film now titled Silver & Black.

Sony’s Spider-Man universe is a curious thing. Already announced are spinoffs such as Venom and Silver & Black (featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat), and while they both sound promising so far, there’s just one problem: neither of them will include Peter Parker. That’s because the character is busy over in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the studio is unable to use him. For the time being, at least.
Still, they’re pushing on with their plans to create a whole shared universe featuring Spidey characters and after hearing that Gina Prince-Bythewood had been assigned to the director’s chair of Silver & Black, we’ve now got some rumored plot details for the film. Though none of this has been confirmed just yet, the outlet reporting on it, Splash Report, claims that they have a source who’s given them an outline of the story that will power the spinoff,...

Marvel Studios still stands as the most organized of the cinematic universe studios, but Sony (who they’re teaming up with on this summer’s “Spider-Man: Homecoming“) is coming in hot on their heels. They’ve already landed Tom Hardy for next year’s “Venom,” and now their Silver Sable and the Black Cat movie is heating up.

Gina Prince-Bythewood has been tapped to helm the female-driven superhero flick, which will be titled simply, “Silver And Black.” While perhaps best known as the filmmaker behind “The Secret Life Of Bees” and “Beyond The Lights,” Prince-Bythewood has recently completed the pilot for Marvel’s Freeform series “Cloak & Dagger,” and I would presume her work impressed the right people.

Finding, building, and sustaining a successful television franchise in today's overcrowded media marketplace is an immense challenge for any network. You might argue that the process is more magic than science. However, over the last several decades HBO has proven itself the industry's bellweather, regularly churning out evergreen properties, such as Game of Thrones, Westworld, Boardwalk Empire, Six Feet Under, The Wire, and The Sopranos.
The key to HBO's repeated successes, according to many of their acting and creative alums, has been a long-standing spirit of auteurism; an esoteric process whereby execs hand over the creative reigns to new and established voices, and then stand back (with fingers crossed and talismans clutched).
Case in point, in 2014 the television landscape was struck by a bolt of lightning; out of nowhere an aspiring screenwriter and college professor, Nic Pizzolatto, burst onto the scene with HBO's True Detective anthology series. The first season of True Detective,...

It’s easy to lose track of the number of blockbuster films that are coming out this year. Between the Marvel movies, the DC movies, The Disney movies, and everything else in between, it kind of feels like we’re getting a brand new blockbuster just about every weekend, so it’s inevitable that you’ll forget one every now and then. But it can’t be forgotten that 2017 will be seeing the start of a brand new ambitious shared universe.
This year, we’ll be getting a reboot of The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella, and if the first trailer is any indication, it looks like it’ll be on hell of a time at the movie theaters. Say what you will about attempting to force another shared universe down the throats of consumers, but there’s something to be said about these Universal Monsters eventually sharing the same screen.

The upcoming adaptation of the beloved novel It, written by the master of horror, Stephen King, has a lot of expectations weighing on it. Sure, the expectations may not amount to that of your average superhero flick these days, but as a classic novel, it has an ardent fan base. Plus, not only does the film have to live up to the spirit of the novel, it will forever be compared to the 1990s miniseries, which starred Tim Curry as the terrifying clown, Pennywise.
Already, there has been criticism of the look of the character by fans as it is, and many are skeptical that it will live up to the aforementioned expectations. But for those who have had doubts that the story would play out as effectively as the original book, rest assured that the film’s director, Andrés Muschietti (Mama) understands the material. Just pause for a moment and consider that right now, as of today, we're on-track for a brand new Spider-Man movie, a full-on Justice League film just dropped a trailer, shooting is well-underway for Avengers: Infinity War, and by the end of the year, we're going to get an awesome Thor and Hulk super team-up... and yet, the one movie everyone is the most excited about: James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which hits theaters on 5 May 2017.

A few years back, Sony Pictures tried their hand at creating their own universe. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 wasn’t just meant as a sequel to the first film, but a way to create an entire Sinister Six spinoff that could potentially lead into any other spinoffs. It was an ambitious plan, and sadly, it’s one that didn’t work out. As we know, Sony and Marvel Studios have since teamed up to bring Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that doesn’t mean they can’t create their own worlds separate from the McU. They do, after all, still have the film rights to all the characters in Spider-Man’s rogues gallery and beyond.
We’ve already seen steps like this taken in recent days. As we reported several days back, the studio has hired Thor: Ragnarok screenwriter to create a Black Cat and Silver Sable film,...

Get ready, there’s another comic book movie universe Hollywood is hoping to make you care you about. With Marvel‘s operation running like a well-oiled, money making machine, and DC Films stumbling along, now Sony is getting into the mix. The studio reboots Peter Parker this summer with “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (with a little help from Marvel) and you better believe they are not wasting a moment in creating an expanded universe.

To celebrate the release of Tower of London – out Dual Format 13th Feb. 2017 – we are giving away a copy courtesy of Arrow Video!
Having made their mark on American horror cinema with three colourful adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe – The Fall of the House of Usher, Pit and the Pendulum and Tales of Terror – Vincent Price and director Roger Corman enjoyed a brief hiatus from the macabre author with Tower of London. Shot in black and white, the film was loosely based on the Universal horror picture of the same name as well as two Shakespeare plays: a dash of Macbeth and a dollop of Richard III.
Price plays Richard of Gloucester, brother to a dying king and eager to take his place on the throne. When he is overlooked in favour of their sibling, the Duke of Clarence, things take a murderous turn. Richard goes on a murderous rage,...

In the early ’90s, George A. Romero and Dario Argento came together for Two Evil Eyes, a film featuring two short films based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe, with one segment directed by Romero and the other helmed by Argento, and now Scorpion Releasing is working on a Blu-ray release of the movie made by horror royalty.
Blu-ray.com reports that that the folks at Scorpion Releasing are hard at work on a Blu-ray release of Two Evil Eyes, which is believed to be coming out sometime this year.
Romero’s segment, “The Facts in the Case of Mr. Valdemar,” reunited The Fog co-stars Adrienne Barbeau and Tom Atkins, while Argento’s “The Black Cat” featured the likes of Harvey Keitel, Sally Kirkland, and Julie Benz.
We’ll keep Daily Dead readers updated as more information is revealed, and in the meantime, check out the film’s synopsis and trailer:

Anthropoid (Sean Ellis)
Throw a dart at a map, and you can make a World War II movie set in whatever place you hit. Of course, pretty much any film about the Good War that doesn’t focus on the American (sometimes British) point of view of the conflict will probably seem “random” to the mainstream; one odd side-effect of Hollywood’s Oscar-baity love of the era. But there...

Has the curse been lifted? Unfortunately, according to William Sianis’ great-nephew Bill Sianis, the answer is still no. The Cubs will have to win the World Series, not just make it in, to break the curse. Well, they’re 3 wins away. The black cat (1969) Chicago Cubs players and fans all felt like 1969 was their year… until a black cat wandered across the field during a crucial game against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. The Mets would end up winning the World Series, and the black cat would end up part of the lore. The billy goat (1945) A smelly goat.

It’s something of an understatement to say that the work of poet and short story writer Edgar Allan Poe has had a lasting effect on the horror genre. Especially when it comes to horror cinema in particular. It’s not so long ago that we had the likes of P.O.E.: Poetry of Eerie and it’s sequel Project of Evil, David DeCoteaus’s The Pit and the Pendulum, and the animated anthology Extraordinary Tales; and now comes Tales of Poe – which adapts Poe’s short stories The Tell Tale Heart, Cask of Amontillado and Dreams.
