George Raft was plagued by financial issues and sold the rights to his story to Allied Artists for a large amount of money, and this film is the result.
Ray Danton had no formal dance training, but his persistence in mastering choreographer Alex Romero's routines for this film resulted in an unexpected proficiency as a song-and-dance man. This paid off when Danton made his Broadway debut several years later, replacing Robert Horton in the starring role opposite Inga Swenson and Stephen Douglass in David Merrick's musical "110 in the Shade."

In the film, George Raft works in Texas Guinan's nightclub and follows her to Hollywood to appear as a chorus boy in one of her films. This is true; Raft did indeed make his film debut in Queen of the Night Clubs (1929), Guinan's first talkie.
