Lisa Lane, the former U.S. Women’s Chess Champion believed to have inspired the 1983 novel (and Netflix series) The Queen’s Gambit, has died. She was 90. According to her Legacy.com obituary, Lane, who was inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame in 2023, passed away on February 28, 2024, at her home in Carmel, New York, after a battle with cancer. Born on April 25, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Lane didn’t discover chess until college; she attended Temple University. She quickly learned and soon mastered the game, winning the U.S. Women’s Chess Championship in 1959 and holding the title until 1962. During her title reign, Lane appeared as a contestant on a 1960 episode of the television show To Tell the Truth, where the four panel members had to correctly guess her identity. In 1961, she was a contestant on What’s My Line?, another game where the panel had to guess the guest’s identity.

It marks the game show hosting debut for The Goldbergs and A.P. Bio actor Oswalt, who has previously appeared as a contestant on a number of quizzers including To Tell The Truth and Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.

Anthony Anderson is teaming up with his mother, Doris Bowman aka Mama Doris, in Fox’s latest competition series We Are Family, and he’s excited (and possibly nervous) to hear what she’s got to say.

Black-ish alum Anthony Anderson and his mom Doris Bowman (aka “Mama Doris”) are teaming up to host Fox’s new midseason music-centric guessing game show We Are Family. The mother and son duo are replacing previously announced Jamie Foxx and his daughter Corinne, who are unable to host the show due to a scheduling conflict for Foxx, not a big surprise following all the strike-related production changes and delays. He is still set to executive produce the series, which will premiere Wednesday, January 3.

“Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson and his mother, Doris Bowman, are once again teaming up to host another game show together. The son-and-mother duo have been announced as the new hosts of Fox’s upcoming music gamer “We Are Family,” which premieres Wednesday, Jan. 3.
Anderson and Bowman replace Jamie Foxx and his daughter Corinne Foxx, who had previously been announced for “We Are Family.” Jamie Foxx continues as an executive producer on “We Are Family,” as he presumably recovers from a medical condition that he was hospitalized for earlier this year. Jamie Foxx also hosts another music game show, “Beat Shazam,” for Fox (with Corinne Foxx as the show’s DJ), but Nick Cannon filled in as host, and Kelly Osbourne guested as DJ, for episodes that aired this summer.

With the long weekend upon us, there’s a good chance you’ll be looking for some new shows or movies to watch, especially if you’ll be sheltering-in-place. Thankfully, there’s a lot of fresh content coming to all your favorite streaming platforms, so we thought we’d provide a bit of a rundown on what you can watch this Memorial Day weekend.
Over on Netflix, the biggest addition comes in the form of The Lovebirds, a new comedy starring Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae as a couple who have been wrongfully accused of committing a murder. While it released to somewhat mixed reception, it’s certainly scoring much higher than The Wrong Missy, while also proving to be equally as popular with Netflix subscribers.

ABC’s game show trio of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and the season premieres of Holey Moley and To Tell the Truth led Thursday’s primetime, which included NBC’s Red Nose Day lineup and the series premiere of Fox’s reality matchmaking series Labor of Love.
Millionaire, which drew a 0.8 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and dipped a tenth from last week, tied with the Season 2 premiere of Holey Moley and NBC’s special Celebrity Escape Room for the night’s top honors in the demo. To Tell the Truth followed as it returned for its fifth cycle. ABC won the night overall in both metrics.
NBC’s two-hour Red Nose Day benefit was even with last year’s two-hour telecast but dipped in viewers.

“Labor of Love,” Fox’s new show which matches 41-year old Kristy Katzmann with 15 potential fathers to her child, debuted to pretty poor numbers on Thursday night.
The show’s premiere scored a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49 and drew only 909,000 total viewers, which represents the weakest debut of the season for Fox in both metrics. Earlier on, “Celebrity Watch Party” aired its third episode to a 0.3 rating and 1.4 million total viewers, down about 12% in audience from the week before.
ABC hit the fairway with its first drive of the summer, winning the night overall thanks partly to the season 2 premiere of mini-golf competition series “Holey Moley,” which scored a 0.8 rating and 4.4 million pairs of eyeballs. While that’s down from the season 1 debut which delivered a 1.0 rating, it’s more than double the viewership tally from its freshman season finale.
Ratings: ABC Scores With ‘Holey Moley’ Return, Fox’s ‘Labor of Love’ Debut Doesn’t Earn Lots of Love
ABC scored a Thursday win in ratings and total viewers with the Season 2 premiere of “Holey Moley,” a new episode of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” and the return of “To Tell the Truth,” according to preliminary data from Nielsen.
Meanwhile, Fox’s debut of reality dating series “Labor of Love,” which follows “Bachelor” alum Kristy Katzmann on her hunt for her perfect man/sperm donor, combined with weak performer “Celebrity Watch Party” to land the broadcaster in a tie with Spanish-language network Telemundo for fifth place in the key demo.
Over on NBC, the “Celebrity Escape Room” special was neck and neck with “Holey Moley” and “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?” for the night’s highest-rated show.

Since mid-March, the coronavirus pandemic has upended every aspect of life in the United States, causing stay-at-home mandates in most states in an attempt to contain the spread of Covid-19.
As a consequence, the entertainment industry — a multi-billion-dollar global business — has come to a grinding halt, with every television show and movie indefinitely shut down, putting most of the tens of thousands of people employed by those productions out of work. The shutterings hit the broadcast networks — Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC, and The CW — toward the end of the traditional TV season, so some shows had already completed production before the summer hiatus. Others — such as ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” which had shot 21 episodes of its 25-episode order — simply had to adjust accordingly, concluding its season early on April 9.

It’s been 12 months since Lewis Capaldi released Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent, the wildly successful debut album that turned him into pop’s reigning prince of heartbreak and despair. In those 12 months, the 23-year-old Scottish singer-songwriter with the almighty bellow has played shows around the world, conquered the charts, and earned both his first Grammy nomination (Song of the Year, for the smash hit “Someone You Loved”) and the kind of ubiquity that makes you think his music was built into the foundation of every grocery store, pharmacy,...

There are few surefire successes in television. It just so happens that with its new releases for May 2020, Hulu almost certainly found itself one. May 8 sees the debut of all eight episodes of Solar Opposites, the latest sci-fi animated effort from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. This is a brand new story featuring a family of aliens crashing to Earth and learning to live amongst the rest of us weirdos. But the animation style and sci-fi themes hew so closely to Rick and Morty that there’s no way this won’t be a hit.
On the off chance Solar Opposites doesn’t set the world ablaze, Hulu has some other intriguing content lottery tickets for May. The Great premieres on May 15 and is a comedic period piece about Catherine the Great starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. You can’t accuse Hulu of not taking big swings this month!

Last year, Emmy copied her big brother Oscar’s trend of having a host-less ceremony, so the annual awards show went without an emcee for the first time since 2003. However, if Emmy viewers have their say this year, the Television Academy will hop off the bandwagon and hire a host. A whopping 73% of readers voted in our recent poll they wanted a host this year because they “missed” having one last year. Compare that to 15% who said they’ll “have to think about it more” and 12% who argued “no,” because “hosts just waste precious time.” To the 73% of people who voted “yes,” we want to hear your creative ideas for an Emmy host! Bob Cobert, the Grammy- and Emmy-nominated composer of television’s “Dark Shadows” and “The Winds of War,” died of pneumonia Feb. 19, in Palm Desert, Calif. He was 95.
Cobert’s themes for the 1960s Gothic horror soap “Dark Shadows” – “great spook music,” he once called it – were his most popular compositions, and “Quentin’s Theme” (for the character played by David Selby) became a top 10 hit in 1969 as recorded by the Charles Randolph Grean Sound, earning a Grammy nomination as Best Instrumental Theme.
The “Dark Shadows” score, the first daytime soap to generate a best-selling soundtrack album, cemented Cobert’s partnership with the series’ creator-producer Dan Curtis, who continued to employ Cobert on nearly all of his television and film projects for the next four decades.

Orson Bean, whose subtle wit made him a staple on television in the 1950s and 1960s, was killed in a pedestrian traffic accident Friday in Venice, Calif. He was 91 and his death was confirmed by the Los Angeles County coroner.
Bean was struck by a car and killed while crossing Venice Boulevard in Venice at 7:35 Pm. A “car coming westbound did not see him and clipped him,” Los Angeles Police Department Captain Brian Wendling told ABC7.
A second driver, who “was distracted by people trying to slow him down” then struck Bean, Wendling said.
Bean was crossing the busy street to get to the Venice Resident Theatre. His wife of 27 years, actress Alley Mills, was reportedly already at the location.
Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Investigators have initially said they believe the crash was an accident.
