Our favourite song: “A Language Disappears”
Zoon (a.k.a. shoegaze artist Daniel Monkman) has woven their Indigenous experience and activism into throughout their work. This can be seen in the lushly orchestrated, Polaris Prize-longlisted Bekka Ma’iingan and its first single “A Language Disappears”, which acknowledges the fear of Indigenous people that their language and culture will be forgotten.

The Killers is an American rock band formed in 2001. Current members include lead vocalist Brandon Flowers, lead guitarist Dave Keuning, drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. and bassist Mark Stoermer.
The Killers’ 2004 debut, Hot Fuss, took influence from 80s synth pop and new wave and launched the band onto the international stage. It had four hit singles, including the band’s most recognizable song, “Mr. Brightside”.
Their most recent album, Pressure Machine, marked a significant change from their usual style, stripping away their anthemic tunes for a darker and more restrained sound.

Another 3-D breakthrough, this time for a Paramount musical rescued from oblivion and remastered by the 3-D Archive. Rhonda Fleming and Gene Barry star in a blend of songs and Alaskan adventure filmed in downtown Hollywood. The depth effects are great, but the big surprise is Teresa Brewer, the radio star turned one-shot movie musical wonder. Her voice resurrects memories of pop vocals just prior to the arrival of Rock ‘n’ Roll.

Chris Pine kept fixating on a single image. "I had this picture in my head," the 35-year-old actor recalls, his voice echoing over a speakerphone from Austin, Texas. "It was two guys on a porch, real rustic. One of them is sitting, the other is standing, kind of leaning on one of the porch's columns. Both are sort of staring out in the distance while the sun's going down." He stops for a second, then continues. "I just kind of got into my brain after I read the script. It...

So much of movie magic these days is green screen and CGI — the work of animators and special effects artists. Given the fakery we’ve come to expect, when a movie comes along that pulls off some spectacular visuals on-set without a lot of post-production tweaking, that kind of movie magic makes us take notice. The latest wowing practical stunt: “Furious 7.” The “Fast and Furious” franchise has always made its mark with impressive action sequences done practically. If the seventh installment was trying to top the previous six in that department, it succeeded. This time featuring Dominic Toretto and his team drive skydiving cars out of a plane. To shoot the critical scene, the “Furious 7” stunt team actually dropped real live cars out of an airplane. Aerial cameramen followed the jump, doving with their own parachutes. The cars dropped first from an altitude of 12,000 feet in Colorado mountains,...

One of the hardest bouts of growing pains experienced by adolescents is that rite of passage known as the high school experience. In high school one is subject to discovering their own sense of self-identity and purpose. In fact, sometimes the social factor is crucial because the cost of belonging in social-related circles is vital in a four-year commitment to belonging among your peers.
The tension is high to belong and get along as your search for excellence in good grades, social interaction and the overall learning experience is important. However, not every youngster can cope with what they are faced as the obstacles to excel are demanding in high school. Hence, the potential to become “an outsider” is inevitable and the unlikeliest label that no one can overcome no matter how much they try.

Sony Pictures has confirmed that starting at 10am Pacific time today, you will be able to rent James Franco and Seth Rogen's comedy The Interview on YouTube, Google Play, and Xbox for only $5.99. You will also have the option to buy it for $14.99 which is pretty much the cost of admission for seeing a movie here in Los Angeles. There's also an official website that has been set up for anyone who may not have access to those services. There have been talks of the film being made available on Netflix in the next few days as well, but there's no confirmation of that yet. It's good to see that Sony didn't let the hackers win. Enjoy the movie! Hopefully it was worth all the insanity.

Refresh for latest… Here’s a list of theaters confirmed to be showing Sony’s The Interview on Christmas Day after the studio worked with indie chains on a release plan finalized this morning. The venues have a deadline of 6 Pm Pt today to decide whether to run the movie on December 25, as Sony must send theaters the movie hard drives in time to make Christmas Day screenings. Some theaters are booking the film for later in the month or into January, so that deadline isn’t looming as large. As of 4 Pm, more than 200 theaters had signed on.
This is all happening fast so this list will continue to grow. We’re hearing that there are still internal discussions among art houses about whether to add the pic to their schedules, with security and previous commitments among the concerns. Some of the theaters had planned to be dark on Christmas Day,...

If we were to hazard a guess based on the myriad viral images Legendary Pictures has released of their "Godzilla" reboot/redo/do-over, we'd say sinkholes—and ones some world governments believe should be secret—factor in quite heavily in the plot. Or at least the mechanics of what gets the story engine moving. Following the leak of Comic-Con footage in October that made some impressive waves, the official trailer for "Godzilla" is here. Run for cover. A couple things distinguish this new on the cinema's favorite monster mythology. Dean Tavoularis was the production designer on the one and only film I worked on, Farewell My Lovely. Aside from Dean, the entire crew from The Godfather was on this film, produced by Elliott Kastner (stepfather of Cassian Elwes and his illustrious brothers), associate produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, with a cameo of the new upcoming heartthrob Sylvester Stallone, and starring truly stellar actors Charlotte Rampling and Robert Mitchum. It's hard to believe that 1975 was 37 years ago!
And now, the 40th Telluride Film Festival (August 29 – September 2, 2013), presented by National Film Preserve Ltd., proudly announces Oscar-winning production designer Dean Tavoularis as its 2013 poster artist. Tavoularis will attend the 40th Telluride Film Festival over Labor Day weekend to present his poster design to the public and hold a poster signing for festival guests.
As a student, Dean Tavoularis studied painting and architecture at different art schools and went on to work at Disney Studios as an in-betweener in the animation department where he worked on the 1955 film Lady and the Tramp. He then transitioned to the live-action department where he worked on the 1954 film 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. His career as a production designer began in 1967 when filmmaker Arthur Penn asked him to lead the artistic direction for Bonny And Clyde. Three years later, he and Penn teamed up again on Little Big Man. He began working with Francis Ford Coppola in 1972 on The Godfather, which was the beginning of much collaboration including the latter two films in The Godfather trilogy and Apocalypse Now.
Tavoularis has spent the last ten years focusing on his work as a painter. His return to film came in 2012 when he was the production designer on Roman Polanski’s Carnage. He has worked on over thirty films spanning four decades, landing five Academy-Award nominations and one win for The Godfather Part II. Tavoularis lives in Paris and Los Angeles with his wife, actress Aurore Clément.
“We are thrilled Dean agreed to do the poster art for the 40th anniversary,” said Executive Director Julie Huntsinger. “The 40th edition will be a remarkable celebration of Tff’s past and present, and Dean’s work with Telluride is a wonderful parallel. He was a part of Telluride in its very early years when he designed a poster for a Tff celebration called the ‘Spirit of Zoetrope.’ We are excited to have him back and to present his vision for this special year. ”
Tavoularis remarks, “When I was asked by Tom Luddy and Julie Huntsinger if I would design the poster for the 40th Telluride Film Festival, I was first flattered and then thoughtful of being part of the Telluride film history. In my own way I pondered Telluride’s past and in fact all film festivals. Like the word implies, a festival is a fair; people gathering to show their films. It just as well could be their tomatoes. It’s an exchange. I wanted a poster that was simple and joyful, that looked homemade with pure colors in shapes that symbolize a 1:85 screen and an audience. One cannot exist without the other. I am very happy to be a small part of Telluride’s history.”
Dean Tavoularis joins a prestigious list of artists who have shared their talents with Telluride Film Festival. Past poster artists include Ed Ruscha, John Mansfield, Julian Schnabel, Dottie Attie, Doug and Mike Starn, David Lance Goines, Chuck Jones, David Salle, Alexis Smith, Jim Dine, Seymour Chwast, Frederic Amat, Francesco Clemente, Dave McKean, Gary Larson, Chip Kidd, John Canemaker, Mark Stock, Laurie Anderson, William Wegman, Ralph Eggleston, Maira Kalman and Dave Eggers.

From the Press Release
Hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil. In a decrepit tower block, a young man runs for his life from two hooded figures. Exhausted, he runs through the corridor, banging on doors and shouting for help – “Please! Somebody help me!” But no one has responded to his cries for help, only the sound of security chains bolting doors, denying him rescue.
Resident Becky Hardman turns off her hall light and nervously peers through the peephole in her door. Terrified, Becky stands in her flat as the sound of a vicious beating rains down on the young man. Becky just can’t let this happen – she rushes out...

With technologically heavy music flooding the radio, it’s unbelievably refreshing to hear organic music. While I do think the word, “organic”, is wrongly thrown around the music industry just as much as that in the health world, the stripped down sound of artist and activist, Koji, fits too appropriately with the term to avoid its use. Koji dropped his debut full-length, “Crooked In My Mind”, on April 30th via Run For Cover Records and with one play through, his effortless storytelling ability comes to the forefront. No beat dropper can compete with that lyrical mastery. You can get your copy of “Crooked In My Mind” here and read Koji’s discussion [ Read More ]

The time has once again come for the Academy Awards, with tonight’s show hosted by Family Guy creator and Ted director Seth MacFarlane. I am not particularly excited in seeing MacFarlane on hosting duties, nor in this year’s awards, as they all seem fairly predictable as we head into the evening. But 2012 brought with it a very strong crop of nominees, and here’s hoping some good films are honored as the show goes along.
I will be live-blogging the entire event from start to finish – minus all the red carpet stuff, as there is only so much I can make myself interested in – starting tonight at 8:30 Et/7:30 Ct/5:30 Pt. I am in Denver, Colorado, on Mountain Time, and the show will begin at 6:30 here. For the sake of simplicity, I will be using my own local time codes, so do not get confused...

This is how it always starts, man. Meteors hit the Earth. Aliens emerge. We are brought to the brink of destruction and look to Will Smith to save us all. In any event, Russia has been getting pounded by space rocks, and we're inevitably doomed. Watch the video!
Reuters reports that a powerful blast rocked the Russian region of the Urals early on Friday with bright objects, identified as possible meteorites, falling from the sky, emergency officials said.
"It was definitely not a plane," an emergency official told Reuters, without elaborating. "We are gathering the bits of information and have no data on the casualties so far."
No one was hurt in the meteor shower, an emergency official told Ria-Novosti. Local residents said they witnessed burning objects in the sky of the Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions. The sounds of car alarms and breaking windows could be heard in the area,...

Moviefone's New Release Pick of the Week "We Need to Talk About Kevin" What's It About? Tilda Swinton stars as the mother of Kevin (Ezra Miller), a disturbed young man who commits a violent Columbine-like school massacre. The film chronicles Kevin's upbringing and attempts to answer whether his mother's parenting is at fault. See It Because: While it's not an easy movie to watch -- lesser films would have laid on the Lifetime TV movie melodrama or tried to wrap it up with a simple answer -- "Kevin" is buoyed by a fantastic set of performances from mother and son. Swinton's chameleon-like ability to convey any character makes her one of the best actors working today, and the 19-year-old Miller deserves all of the critical kudos for his creepy breakout performance. For today’s selection, I am pleased to be bringing the work of Koji (aka Andrew Koji Shiraki) to the world of Sound on Sight. Koji is an indie punk-rock activist/artist who tours on behalf of The Resolve, an organization in Washington DC dedicated to putting an end to the use of child soldiers in Uganda. You may have heard of Invisible Children, an organization that can be found on many campuses around the world that is also dedicated to putting an end to the Lra. The Resolve is the parent organization of Invisible Children. All proceeds from his shows go towards The Resolve. His shows, usually house shows, consist of a concert followed by a workshop on activism.
I have seen him twice now and I am lucky enough to have gotten to know him due to my work with Invisible Children. What can I say about the guy?...

Did conservatives make “Atlas Shrugged – Part 1,” a low-budget adaptation of Ayn Rand’s famous 1957 novel, a box office hit? While the film’s opening weekend sales didn’t reach blockbuster levels, earning $1.7 million from about 300 theaters, the film’s backers are enthusiastic about the results.
“We’re at the upper edge of our expectations,” said “Shrugged” producer Harmon Kaslow. “And we’re a way above what the industry expected us to do.

It’s an idea that has been swirling around the Filmmaker Magazine office for quite a while and today it became a reality with the launch of our Video On Demand calendar.
Every month we will unveil a curated list of independent film titles that we feel are worth checking out through On Demand cable providers and streaming services. You’ll find some titles we’ve already covered online or in the magazine when they played theatrically, while others are festival favorites that are premiering on VOD. We also give our “VOD Pick of the Month” and note if a title is available on iTunes, Netflix or Amazon Instant Video (plus an archive that goes back to November 2010).
Coverage of movies that are On Demand (whether it be through TV or the Internet) is still something that we all in the media are trying to figure out. But with DVD...

I failed. Yesterday I had vowed to vote in the afternoon and then not pay any attention to election results until it was all over and the dust had settled. Well, I was glued to MSNBC by 8 Pm. Fellow Tea Party crazies (and phobes) Sharron Angle, Christine O'Donnell and likely Joe Miller also lost, which may be good for us, but will be tragic for late night comedians. Lost in all...

As we've been going through old South Park seasons as part of our Classic TV Quotes feature, we've been eagerly anticipating season five. Why? Two words: Scott Tenorman.
If we could ask for just two more, it'd be "Scott Tenorman Must Die." Call us sick. Call us twisted. But, without a doubt, out of the two hundred plus episodes of our favorite Colorado-based cartoon, this episode still takes the prize for us.
Sure there were plenty of other memorable episodes including the introduction of the "Super Best Friends" and even the lamest ancillary character, "Towelie." Overall, the fifth season was one of the strongest in the show's history.
So to honor Scott and one of our favorite seasons, we present our favorite South Park quotes from the fourteen episode run:
Head Scoutmaster: Oh, Big Gay Al, it has recently come to our attention that you are gay.
Big Gay Al: Well,...

Precious, the story of an obese and abused black teenager, is the year's most reviled as well as praised film in America. But director Lee Daniels is used to trouble, he tells Gaby Wood. He grew up gay on the streets of Philadelphia, after all, and is drawn to the most disturbing truths. That'll be why he's heading to America's Deep South for his next film…
For the past month, one particular actress has filled American movie screens and visited American minds. She is obese and very dark-skinned, and the character she plays – a 16-year-old illiterate girl from Harlem who is abused by her mother and pregnant by her father for the second time – has been dealt one of the worst hands society has to offer. Yet what's most often said about Gabourey Sidibe – in this Aniston-adoring, holiday-spirited culture – is none of those things. It's that she is completely wonderful,...

Directors David Fincher and Jan Troell and actress Jean Simmons will trek this weekend to the Rockies, where each will be feted with a tribute at the 35th Telluride Film Festival.
The pocket-size festival, which traditionally doesn't reveal its lineup until the last minute, gets under way today in the Colorado mountain town and runs through Monday. Despite the all-American locale, this year's event will have an especially international feel.
"Internationally, this has been another terrific year," Gary Meyer, who serves as fest director along with Tom Luddy, said of the lineup the two have assembled.
The only soft spot might be the U.S. component.
"The trend that all the fall festivals are facing," Meyer said, "is that because of the writers strike, a lot of high-profile American films that might have been available just aren't going to be ready in time."
That, in turn, could affect the way...
