The news comes as Atresplayer Premium in Spain has announced that “Nacho” will bow on its service on March 5 as an Atresplayer Premium Original, in other words an exclusive in Spain on the adventurous service whose recent Originals include “Cardo,” produced by Los Javis.

Almodóvar is back again! An early teaser trailer has debuted for the latest Pedro Almodóvar film, this one titled Parallel Mothers, originally known as Madres Paralelas. It was just announced as a Venice Film Festival premiering in a few months, and will open in the US later this year from Sony Pictures Classics. The film is another drama that centers on two mothers, portrayed by Penélope Cruz and Milena Smit, who both give birth on the same day. "With Madres Paralelas I return to the female universe, to motherhood, to the family," Almodóvar said earlier this year. "I speak of the importance of ancestors and descendants. The inevitable presence of memory. There are many mothers in my filmography, the ones that are part of this story are very different." The film's cast also includes Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Israel Elejalde, Julieta Serrano, and Rossy de Palma. This teaser is dialogue free so...

It’s quite welcome that we’re getting successive Pedro Almodóvar the past few years. After Pain & Glory and The Human Voice, his next feature, Madres Paralelas (aka Parallel Mothers), is set to open the Venice Film Festival ahead of a release in Spain in September and a U.S. release on December 24 from Sony Pictures Classics. Ahead of the premiere, the first teaser trailer has now arrived.
Reuniting the director with his longtime collaborators Penélope Cruz, Julieta Serrano, and Rossy de Palma, the film also stars Israel Elejalde, Milena Smit, and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón. The story, which the director reveals will be an “intense drama,” follows women who give birth on the same day and have parallel trajectories in life. Written specifically with Cruz in mind, the story is set in Madrid and will explore “the feminine world of new mothers, of mothers who are raising children in the first and second year,...

Pedro Almodóvar has dropped the first official trailer for “Madres paralelas,” which is set to open this year’s Venice Film Festival.
“Madres paralelas” is led by long-time Almodóvar favorite Penélope Cruz who is joined by key cast members Aitana Sánchez-Gijón (“Boca a Boca”) and Milena Smit (“Cross the Line”), “Veneno” duo Israel Elejalde and Daniela Santiago, and two more Almodóvar regulars in Julieta Serrano and Rossy de Palma, co-stars of the Oscar-nominated “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.”
“Madres paralelas” — “Parallel Mothers” in English — turns on a trio of mothers, played by Cruz, Gijón and Smit, and expands Almodóvar’s previous depictions of womanhood by turning the film’s focus on imperfect mothers.
In the dialogue-free trailer, we’re treated to a palette that marks the film as an Almodóvar with almost no other details needed. The film’s trio of mothers are seen in varying stages...

Pedro Almodóvar has wrapped production on his new feature, “Madres paralelas (Parallel Mothers),” which only started filming in March under strict Covid safety protocols. The film is notable for reuniting the Oscar winner with several of his longtime muses, including Penélope Cruz (their last movie together was 2019’s Cannes winner “Pain and Glory”) and Rossy de Palma (who got her acting start with three Almodóvar movies between 1987 and 1989 and last appeared in the director’s 2016 melodrama “Julieta”). Production company El Deseo celebrated the end of production by releasing first look photos from “Madres” and a behind-the-scenes video from the Covid safety set (see both below).
Joining Cruz and de Palma in the cast are “Veneno” actor Israel Elejalde and “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown” star Julieta Serrano, plus Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and Milena Smit. Per Variety, the story centers on three mother characters played by Cruz, Gijón and Smit.

Exclusive: Oscar-nominated actress Adriana Barraza is set to serve up some scares in the next slate of films in the horror anthology Welcome To The Blumhouse at Amazon studios. The influential Mexican actress will star in Bingo directed and co-written by rising genre filmmaker Gigi Saul Guerrero. The film is currently in production.
The collaboration is a Latinx-driven narrative that includes two generations of Mexican artists. In this case, it is legendary veteran actress Barraza and the up and comer Guerrero. This is a major win as we have seen a severe lack of Latinx representation in film and TV.

San Sebastian’s Tabakalera, a former tobacco factory repurposed as a hub of cultural activity for the Basque region with close ties to the city’s film festival, has launched the 2deo Serieak, an ambitious, international program developed to tutor, guide and support projects from TV series creators, producers and scriptwriters. The new initiative is backed by 2deo, Tabakalera’s audiovisual laboratory, and promoted by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa in collaboration with the San Sebastian Festival.
For the Tabakalera, the program represents a further step forward in the promotion and dissemination of Spanish, and more specifically Basque culture and talent, perhaps best exemplified by the recent global success of HBO Europe’s “Patria,” the company’s first Spanish-language original which can now be seen HBO Max.

The first footage from Halloween Kills was unveiled today during Blumfest, a one-day online event focused on new and upcoming movie and TV projects from the Blumhouse production company.
The sequel to 2018’s Halloween, the successful, acclaimed reboot and follow-up to John Carpenter’s original 1978 classic, is bringing back several legacy characters from that movie, with the teaser giving us our first quick glimpses of three of them. Take a look and see if you can spot them!
At approximately :20 in the 36-second trailer, that is Nancy Stephens as Nurse Marion Chambers, who was Dr. Sam Loomis’ assistant in the original Carpenter film and played the role in Halloween II (1981) and Halloween H20 (1998). Although the character died in the latter film, the current Halloween movies pretty much ignore or retcon everything that happened in the sequels, so Marion is back!

Pedro Almodóvar is in the middle of his most productive run in years, with a new short now out in the world and touring the festival circuit, a Lucia Berlin literary adaptation in the works, and an upcoming film with muse Penélope Cruz. But as revealed at the ongoing Venice Film Festival, where his 30-minute Jean Cocteau-based “The Human Voice” world-premiered earlier this month, the Spanish auteur has even more projects in the kiln.
At the press conference for “The Human Voice,” starring a dazzlingly styled Tilda Swinton as a jilted woman waiting on a very important phone call from an old flame, Almodóvar said he has also written an unconventional western, and has plans for two additional short films. One of them is inspired by current events, a dystopian narrative set in a world where arts and cultural centers like theaters have vanished.

Filmmakers have seen their daily lives upended pretty dramatically due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Those that were filming when the outbreaks began around the world saw their productions halted. Some who were finishing up films and readying for release saw their pictures delayed. But some, like Pedro Almodóvar, have used their time to finish scripts a bit faster than they expected.
According to Variety, it appears that Almodóvar has used his time in quarantine to finish the script for his next feature, “Madres paralelas.” And not only that, he’s already gone ahead and spoken with Penelope Cruz to star in the film, which he hopes to begin production on in early 2021.

Pedro Almodóvar and his favorite female lead Penelope Cruz look set to re-team on feature “Madres paralelas,” a Madrid-set drama that returns to Almodóvar’s biggest creative inspiration — motherhood — and a model that has served him very well over the last 30 years.
Set to go into pre-production in October, “Madres paralelas” is scheduled to shoot from February next year and bow commercially in Spanish theaters by the end of 2021, Agustín Almodóvar — Pedro Almodóvar’s brother and producer — told Variety.
Though there is still no formal contract with Cruz, she has read and liked the screenplay, Pedro Almodóvar commented.
“Madres paralelas” is a project that Almodóvar has developed over time. However, three months of confinement during Spain’s Covid-19 crisis allowed him to advance and finish the screenplay, which turns on two mothers who give birth the same day. Movie titles produced by top Spanish broadcast network Mediaset España used to spark buzz at the Cannes film market every year, befitting a driving force of the Spanish film industry.
This year, however, like many other top European film production houses, Mediaset España is waiting on the evolution of the Covid-19 pandemic crisis to take the next steps in its theatrical release plans.
Films such as Jaume Balaguero’s TF1 Studio-sold “Way Down,” one of the company’s most anticipated titles of the year, is scheduled for a theatrical release this fall; and comedy “Operación Camarón,” handled internationally by Filmax, delayed its Spanish release from March 13 to Sept. 11.
“These are films for which we have strong audience expectations, and we want to protect them until we find the best scenario,” Mediaset España CEO Paolo Vasile said.
