Henry Cavill might have just missed out on being Bond early in his career, but that didn't stop him from becoming a star. The Brit's show business journey hasn't been without a few missteps, such as when he was roped into Dwayne Johnson's bizarre attempt to remain in the now defunct DC Extended Universe, or when he abandoned "The Witcher" after having lobbied hard for the lead role of Geralt. But despite these setbacks, Cavill has become a household name and part of his success is down to the man's alarming commitment to his craft.
Much like his "Mission: Impossible — Fallout" co-star, Tom Cruise, Cavill has maintained a single-minded devotion to doing whatever is necessary to finish whatever project he's working on. With "Fallout," that manifested as a refusal to give up on a particularly difficult helicopter scene, with Cavill telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2021:

Was Dwayne Johnson a failed football player? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Dwayne Johnson didn’t just become Hollywood’s highest-paid actor. No, he had a rocky start—literally. Before Fast & Furious and Jumanji, he tried out for the NFL, later suiting for the Miami Hurricanes. Then, the unthinkable happened. Johnson went undrafted.
That crushing defeat? Total game-changer. “If it weren’t for this dream that I was so focused on… not playing in the NFL wound up being the best thing that ever happened to me,” Johnson told the Pivot Podcast. Instead of sulking, he channeled his “what now?” energy into something bigger—enter WWE.
With wrestling in his blood—his dad, Rocky “Soul Man” Johnson, and his granddad, Peter Maivia, were legends—The Rock didn’t just step into the ring. He owned it. Charismatic, confident, and a tad cheeky, he turned wrestling into an art form. Who knew...

As if theaters don’t already have enough gripes about Netflix, a live event that attracted 60 million households worldwide on a Friday night wasn’t going to make them feel better. Friday night’s Logan Paul-Mike Tyson match-up took a real toll on the evening’s box office.
“Red One” (Amazon MGM) led the weekend with $34.1 million, a disappointment for the $220 million production. Also weak is the weekend’s $74 million total, although a slight improvement over 2023. Year to date remains off 11 percent, but that should change with the upcoming “Wicked” (Universal), “Gladiator 2” (Paramount), and “Moana 2” (Disney).
For now, lower-budget, specialized, and niche films again occupied most of the top 10 slots. They include four leading awards contenders, as well as a real surprise with the first Filipino film ever to make the list. “Happy, Love, Again” (Abramorama) grossed $2.4 million in only 250 theaters, with a sky-high per-theater average...

Review: Red One is the very definition of a streaming movie. While it’s getting a theatrical release, it seems tailor-made as a movie meant to please the algorithm and audiences looking for an easily digestible family action film they can break up in pieces. Despite running only two hours, it’s striking similar in structure to Dwayne Johnson’s Netflix hit, Red Notice, in that it’s little more than a series of generic action set pieces strung together and designed as “world-building” in the hopes, I suppose, that this will turn out to be a perennial hit for Prime Video. Just as we predicted earlier this week, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s mega-budget Christmas action-comedy, Red One, is set for one of the star’s lowest debuts. While the $30 million Deadline is predicting isn’t quite as bad as the $25 million we called earlier this week, given the movie’s $250 million price tag, this has to be seen as an embarrassing failure for The Rock. When all is said and done, he hasn’t had a legitimate box office smash since Jumanji: The Next Level back in 2019.
The one glimmer of hope for Red One is the fact that the movie has a surprisingly excellent CinemaScore, with the A-minus rating suggesting those who are going to see the movie are actually enjoying it. While I slammed it in my review, even if the movie fails theatrically, it will likely be a solid hit once it hits streaming, with it set...

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is known for many an action film, and he has several projects around the corner.
The first, an action Christmas movie Red One (2024), out in theaters Nov. 15 and not to be confused for Netflix’s Red Notice (2021) in which Johnson also stars. The actor and professional wrestler will also soon reprise his voice role of demigod Maui in Moana 2 before he also plays the live-action version of the mischievous character in the film directed by Thomas Kail.

The principals of Seven Bucks Productions –Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia – are between The Rock and a hard place.
The 12-year-old film and TV shop was one of the earliest prototypes for a modern production company built around a megastar. These were businesses created to give more control and equity to figures like Johnson and his contemporaries. But as Hollywood struggles with consolidation and a cash crunch, scaling past the big name behind the brand may be essential for their long-term survival.
Some celebrity-backed companies have chosen to move into ancillary businesses beyond the movies and shows that made an actor an A-lister. Witherspoon, for instance, has become more consequential to book publishing than anyone might have predicted when Hello Sunshine launched. And Robbie and her partners at LuckyChap haven’t just made projects for the “Barbie” actress. Guided by great taste, they’ve partnered with cutting-edge creatives...

The box office doldrums seem set to continue this weekend, with Dwayne Johnson’s mega-budget Christmas comedy, Red One, on track to deliver one of the star’s worst opening weekends ever. When the movie was announced, it certainly seemed like a no-brainer. After all, The Rock and director Jake Kasdan had a pair of mega-hits under their belts with their Jumanji movies, and the idea for this movie seemed to be that it would marry that formula to the holidays and possibly kick off a new franchise.
So what happened?
Initially, Red One was meant to be a streaming play for Prime Video, and had it been kept in that lane, it likely would have proven to be a hit for the streamer in the same vein as Johnson’s previous Red Notice, which still ranks as Netflix’s biggest movie ever. Yet, somewhere along the way, the decision...

Red One arrives with a lot of bad press. Every movie Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson makes with the word “red” in them has been tracked for being a bloated mess. The superstar made Red Notice in 2021 with Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot, which was a lot more fun than many give it credit for. For all its faults, that film eventually found a sweet spot for genre audiences to enjoy.
Now, Johnson is back with Red One, which is so relentlessly lackluster and uninspired that I wondered if it was a cruel holiday prank meant to ruin our Christmas spirit. Red One is like his family film Tooth Fairy on steroids and off its Ritalin. The film has the same endless “knock the one-liners” out-of-the-park energy as the film has a laugh track.

The fundamental principle behind Dwayne Johnson’s rise as one of the biggest WWE wrestlers and movie stars in the world can be summed up in 2 words: “Audience first.” Inside the ring, he listened to his audience, gave them the spectacle they deserved, and elevated the sport to one of the most celebrated in the world. In Hollywood, he did the same.

The 6 ft. 4 in. tall Samoan action figure carved a niche for himself in the movie industry by tapping into a relatively unexplored field of the explosive action genre. The genre that The Rock likes to play with can’t be placed in a similar sandbox as the one where Hans Gruber or Agent Smith like to operate.
Dwayne Johnson’s visions are bigger, more explosive, and far more festive than the action flicks that birthed Bruce Willis and Will Smith.

Dwayne Johnson’s First Dream Before Becoming a WWE Icon Would’ve Drastically Changed His Entire Life
Dwayne Johnson is most popularly known as the professional wrestler who became a movie star, but he could have had a different career had he become successful in achieving his first dream. It’s difficult to imagine seeing him in a different type of sport other than wrestling, but the Fast & Furious star actually ventured once into a football career.

All’s fair in love and war, eh? Or the comedy game? How do you say that in the comedy world? Anyway, most of us by now know that if we wanted a candid assertion from someone of someone, the one person to turn to is Martha Stewart.
The model, actress, lifestyle guru and businesswoman is not afraid to dish it out whenever she feels the need to. And this time, you could say she’s got a partner in crime.
Hugh Jackman – Sides With Martha Stewart: “Finally Someone Says It”
Think comedy in movies, who does your mind drift to? If you’re not thinking of dear old Rowan Atkinson – Mr. Bean for the uninitiated – then one of the other people you’re thinking of likely includes Ryan Reynolds. The guy can deliver a good punchline, can’t he? ‘Green Lantern,’ ‘Red Notice,’ ‘Deadpool,’ and so on and so forth.

Jake Kasdan’s festive punch-up is the latest Christmas film to arrive in cinemas – but could it be one of the last?
Ahead of its release in the UK this week, Amazon MGM’s Red One has a few mountains to climb.
Originally scheduled for a Christmas 2023 release, the $250m film was pushed back by a year, reportedly due to the Hollywood strikes. Then, in April, an incendiary The Wrap article alleged star Dwayne Johnson cost the studio $50m by arriving on set seven-to-eight hours late – charges the film’s director and producer have both strenuously denied. A trailer debut in June prompted the Guardian headline: “Will The Rock’s Red One be the worst Christmas movie ever?”. The film’s review embargo lifted at 5am the day of its UK release, coincidentally ensuring any questionable publicity was buried under the rather more pressing news circulating the morning of the 6th November.

Dwayne Johnson aka The Rock earned himself a high spot in Hollywood after his initial box office success. However, his latest projects are struggling to meet the standard that he once set himself. His unstoppable momentum has hit a roadblock, and even his larger-than-life persona might not be enough to get past the recent hurdles.

Red One, his newly released action-comedy has made critics and fans question whether his star power is now fading, and it is even enough to carry a film to success. Ted Sarandos may be about to step through a wardrobe and into a wild, unpredictable world: the authentic theatrical release.
Netflix has been steadfast in its plan for members to watch its original movies on Netflix, not in theaters. Then again, Netflix was once steadfast in its stance against commercials. Platitudes were made to be broken, and the anti-theatrical attitude may be next to fall.
Greta Gerwig and Netflix are in discussions on a potential compromise that would get Gerwig’s upcoming adaptation of the “Chronicles of Narnia” book series into theaters ahead of the holidays. Netflix is in talks with IMAX to release “Narnia” on up to 1,800 screens for as many to three to five weeks, which could allow a Thanksgiving theatrical release to be a Christmas streaming debut. A source close to the discussions confirms to IndieWire that these early conversations are taking place.

The North Pole has fallen and Santa’s been red-napped in a good-humoured festive action flick. Here’s our Red One review.
They just don’t make ‘em like this anymore. After watching the festive PR car-crash that’s followed Jake Kasdan’s original action-adventure blockbuster, it’s not hard to see why.
First, Red One’s December 2023 release was pushed back by nearly a year, reportedly due to the SAG-AFTRA strike which began a full five months after shooting had wrapped. Then, a bombshell The Wrap article alleged Dwayne Johnson ballooned the film’s budget by turning up to set seven-to-eight hours late – allegations Kasdan and producer Hiram Garcia have both strenuously denied, but not before Johnson’s “hardest-worker-on-set” reputation disappeared halfway down the bottles he inexplicably pees in.
Six months on from Johnson-gate, the world’s sharpest pens feel poised for a stinker – if they’re even poised at all.

Dwayne Johnson’s $250 million Yuletide action-fantasy-comedy, Red One, is not to be confused with his 2021 action-comedy crime caper, Red Notice. The new film is getting a wide theatrical release, for starters, while the earlier one went straight to Netflix, topped the most-streamed chart for a minute and then was never spoken of again — almost as if it never existed.
The pop-cultural footprint of Jake Kasdan’s laborious holiday entry, while it insistently screams “Next-Gen Christmas Classic!” at you, seems unlikely to be much different. Amazon MGM Studios is being cagey about dates, but the movie seems destined to feed the hungry maw of another streaming service, Prime Video, real soon. This is a high-concept, CG-saturated bore that lacks heart and infectious humor, even if it huffs and puffs its way to a little poignancy in the end.

This is a high-concept, CG-saturated bore that lacks heart and infectious humor, even if it huffs and puffs its way to a little poignancy in the end.

At least once a year, if not once a quarter, Netflix is asked why it doesn’t invest more in theatrical and put more movies in theaters. Every time their answer is the same, though this time Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos gave his response a new spin.
Sarandos on Thursday’s Q3 earnings call said each of the streamer’s top 10 movies have over 100 million views (actually more than 136 million according to Netflix’s numbers) and are “among the most watched films in the world,” theatrical or not. But a massive audience isn’t all Netflix gives them.

The James Bond saga has proven to be fruitful over the years, choosing the best of the bests to deliver to fans some of the most iconic arcs of the peerless spy – take Daniel Craig’s era as Bond, for instance. At the same time, the franchise has also turned down major talents that could have seriously launched it to extraordinary heights, including Gal Gadot.

Previously, Henry Cavill dominated the top position on the list of famous hotshots rejected by the Bond lore. But it seems like his Dceu co-star was yet another addition to it, as Gadot auditioned to become a part of the franchise as well. And while she didn’t end up being fished, it earned her quite a bit of experience before her casting as Wonder Woman in the SnyderVerse.

Henry Cavill, who played Superman in The Dceu, aka the "SnyderVerse," is set to take to the skies again... in a giant Robot Lion.
THR reports that the Man of Steel and The Witcher star has signed on to play a lead role in Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action Voltron movie.
Cavill joins previously-cast newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye, who previously appeared in Badults and served as Tom Holland’s understudy in Romeo & Juliet on the West End this spring. No details on either of their characters have been disclosed, but we assume they will play two of the five Voltron pilots.
The project is being helmed by Red Notice director Rawson Marshall Thurber, and is based on the Japanese sci-fi show Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger Xv. World Events would later edit and dub the series as a syndicated show, naming it Voltron: Defender of the Universe, which ran in the mid '80s.

Amazon and MGM's upcoming "Voltron" movie just got a major dosage of star power: Henry Cavill, the man known best for his work in "Man of Steel" and "The Witcher," has come aboard to lead the feature adaptation of the beloved animated series. The news comes to us via The Hollywood Reporter, though there are no details about the specifics of Cavill's role at this time. What we know for sure is this adds yet another geeky franchise to the actor's list of credits, and that list is already pretty impressive.

If you're going to make a movie about a giant robot, then getting a man of steel to lead it is pretty shrewd business. And that's exactly what Rawson Marshall Thurber has done with the latest piece of casting for his upcoming live-action Voltron movie. As reported by Deadline, former Superman and noted geek IP magnet Henry Cavill has landed the lead role in Thurber's movie, which is currently in the works at Amazon MGM Studios.

WWE is not a sport that falls under the category of light entertainment. It is a commitment, even a lifestyle almost, to the era of heels and heroes and watching them evolve into something completely unexpected. When Dwayne Johnson joined the business that Vince McMahon raised to ungodly levels, the wrestler who was still wet behind the ears had little to offer but much to learn during his embryonic years in the sport.
Over the years, Dwayne Johnson quickly rose through the ranks, transforming into the world’s most famous heel and molding into a ubiquitously celebrated personality aka The Rock.

Meryl Streep is lending her voice to the climate change crisis — literally.
The Oscar-winning icon narrates “Want to Tell a Great Story,” a new PSA that debuted today from the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance made in partnership with the Nrdc’s Rewrite the Future.
“Hey, want to see a story about climate change?” Streep asks in the opening seconds before a series of clips from Get Out, The Lego Movie and Anchorman show characters saying “no” in quick succession. “We get it, we really do. Climate change is scary. It can make us feel, well, a little anxious. And we turn to movies and TV to escape. But what if we changed the question?”
Streep does just that and alters the query: “Want to see a great story? Stories can engage with the climate even as they entertain. Whether they are dramatic or funny or stories of courage, stories about protecting what you love,...

Everyone needs their broad four-quadrant offering, even streamers. If Netflix had the mega budgeted “Red Notice” with Dwayne Johnson, Gal Gadot, and Ryan Reynolds, now Amazon MGM has its analogous version with “Red One.” Also starring Dwayne Johnson opposite Chris Evans, “Red One” centers on two mismatched men—a bounty hunter and a lead security detail—who are assigned to retrieve a kidnapped target.

Amazon-MGM is plotting its own tentpole franchise, with one of its biggest-ever theatrical films, Red One, due to hit theatres on November 15th, just in time for Christmas. With an estimated $250 million price tag, the studio will have to overcome bad buzz from behind the scenes for it to become the franchise it is no doubt hoping for. You can watch the new trailer in the embed above.
In it, Dwayne Johnson plays the North Pole’s Head of Security, who has to team with an infamous bounty hunter (Chris Evans) to save Santa Claus (J.K. Simmons), who’s been kidnapped by evil forces hoping to end Christmas.
The fact that Red One is directed by Jake Kasdan, whose Jumanji movies were smash hits for Sony, points towards this potentially being a big success. However, Johnson’s track record at the box office has been mixed as of late,...
