Predicting the eventual five Oscar nominees for Best International Feature is made difficult by the three-step process that begins after the October 2, 2024 deadline for countries to submit entries. To be part of the selection process for this category, which was called Best Foreign Language Film before 2020, requires a great deal of dedication. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best International Feature.)
In the days following the deadline for submissions, the academy determines each film’s eligibility. Then the several hundred academy members who serve on the International Feature screening committee are divided into groups and required to watch all their submissions over a six-week period that ends in early December. Their top 15 vote-getters will make it to the next round. That list of semi-finalists will be revealed on December 17, 2024.

This year’s Palme d’Or Winner Anora is set to arrive in the UK in November, and a new trailer has been revealed to mark its imminent release.
In May, writer-director Sean Baker’s Anora was crowned the Palme d’Or winner, the highest honour of the Cannes Film Festival. As with 2020’s’s Parasite, the prestigious Cannes award is often seen as the first step in a successful Oscars run. In a year where there’s no runaway contender for Best Picture thus far, there are plenty of people wondering if Anora can maintain its momentum and triumph at the Academy Awards.
The film follows Scream’s Mikey Madison, a stripper who falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch. What could possibly go wrong? Baker has tackled sex work in a couple of his prior films, Tangerine and Red Rocket. However, early reviews for...

The City of Markham is Canada’s most diverse city, with about half of the population coming to the community from outside of Canada, nearly 60 percent of residents speaking a first language other than English and 77.9 percent of residents identifying themselves as a visible minority. More than a third of the population are of Chinese descent, while almost 40% are East Asian. Three directors with roots to Hong Kong decided to place three interconnecting stories in this city.
Nostalgia is screening in Odyssey
Shan, an immigrant in Canada has just been laid off from his job at a factory and is realizing that the company who brought him there to work were actually swindlers. Thus, it does not take much effort from a friend back home to get him into petty crime. And although the first ”job” goes well, when the two decide to rob a Japanese restaurant, all hell breaks loose.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Scream” breakout Mikey Madison is heading to the Strip…in Las Vegas, that is.
Madison leads Sean Baker‘s “Anora,” which has been deemed an Oscar frontrunner with Madison as an actress to watch this awards season. Madison plays an exotic dancer and sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn). Vache Tovmaysa, Yura Borisov, and Baker’s frequent collaborator Karren Karagulian also star.
Baker will be the keynote speaker at IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking Summit.
“Anora” won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2024, and was the first American film to win since Terrence Malick’s “Tree of Life” in 2011. “Anora” will be released by Neon, which handled the distribution of fellow Palme d’Or winners “Parasite,” “Triangle of Sadness,” and “Anatomy of a Fall,” which all went on to be Oscar-nominated. “Parasite” and “Anatomy of a Fall” both won Oscars.

Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); memoirs (“Belfast”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers horror (“Get Out”) and fantasies (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) . (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Original Screenplay.)
Of this year’s top 10 contenders for Best Original Screenplay, nine were written, at least in part, by the directors. The exception is “Challengers,” which Justin Kuritzkes wrote for director Luca Guadagnino. He also adapted the William S. Burroughs novel “Queer” for this busy helmer and he could well contend over in Best Adapted Screenplay for that.
“Challengers” is, at its heart, a romance. Love, albeit short-lived, is also the subject of the frontrunner in this race, Sean Baker‘s “Anora.

Before Bong Joon-Ho’s “Parasite” swept the 2020 Academy Awards, Cj Entertainment, the South Korean production and distribution company behind the film, were not planning such a big entry into the Hollywood mainstream. In fact, prior to this success, they were trying to shop a potential English-language remake of the 2003 Korean cult favorite “Save the Green Planet!” on an indie scale similar to the original. As reported on by The Hollywood Reporter, while speaking at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival at a forum on Navigating the New Paradigm, head of Cj Enm’s film division, Jerry Ko admitted that despite trying carry on the homespun spirit of the original, attaching talent like Yorgos Lanthimos, Ari Aster, Emma Stone, and Jesse Plemons has ballooned the project, now retitled “Bugonia,” into something bigger than he ever expected.

Lady Gaga will likely take on her first supporting actress Oscar run for “Joker: Folie à Deux.” But how far can “Mother Monster” take a movie with such abysmal reviews?
“Joker: Folie à Deux” picks up with Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), institutionalized at Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his violent crimes. As he grapples with his fractured identity, Arthur finds love with fellow inmate Lee (Gaga) and begins embracing the music that has always played inside his chaotic mind.

Is Warner Bros. marketing a completely different movie than what South Korean and Award-winning “Parasite” filmmaker Bong Joon-Ho “Memories of Murder”) intended with his upcoming sci-fi film “Mickey 17,” or is it just a case of tailoring to radically different audiences and territories?
The U.S. trailer for “Mickey 17,” which stars Robert Pattinson (“The Batman,” “Tenet”), Naomi Ackie (“Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker”), Steven Yeun (“Nope”), with Academy Award nominees Toni Collette (“Hereditary”), and Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), was yes, irreverent and elevated with notes of flippant comedy.

When Cj Entertainment, the production team behind Jang Joon-hwan’s Save the Green Planet, got the idea of remaking the 2003 cult Korean sci-fi comedy, they didn’t expect it to get so big.
This was before the release of Bong Joon-ho’s multi-Oscar winner Parasite, before Korean cinema exploded worldwide and before Cj Entertainment became one of the biggest global production outfits with its 2022 acquisition of Endeavor Content (now Fifth Season).
“[Cj Enm] was sort of an unknown production company from a marginalized place then,” said Jerry Jerry Ko, head of Cj Enm’s film division, speaking at a forum on Navigating the New Paradigm at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival.
“We started out with the belief that the film’s concept was ahead of its time and that [maybe we] could make an indie movie, but as we traveled around Hollywood, we realized that there were many hidden fans of the original film.

Busan Film Festival Opens With Kiyoshi Kurosawa Honors, Female Industry Award & Netflix’s ‘Uprising’
The 29th edition of the Busan International Film Festival opened Wednesday night with top stars like Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game), Song Joong-ki (Descendants of the Sun) and Gang Dong-won (Peninsula) walking the red carpet under the towering dome of the Busan Cinema Center, in front of more than 4,500 guests.
With a new leadership team headed by chairman and veteran filmmaker Park Kwang-su as well as Ellen Y.D. Kim, the festival awarded the Asian Filmmaker of the Year honors to Japanese auteur Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Kurosawa won Venice’s Silver Lion for best director in 2020 with Wife of a Spy.
The festival’s congratulatory video for Kurosawa featured praises from fellow Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi and Korean director Bong Joon-ho — both sharing how Kurosawa’s works inspired their own cinematic craft.
In his speech onstage, Kurosawa acknowledged how Biff has provided a platform for many of his works, saying that the...

The trailer for Bong Joon-ho’s quirky dark comedy, Mickey 17, dropped a couple of weeks ago and people have already taken to Robert Pattinson‘s unique performance coupled with Bong’s direction. Mickey 17 was originally supposed to be released back in March, but it wound up being taken off the schedule entirely before making the shift to 2025. Some have said that the reason for the delay is that the studio won’t let Bong Joon-ho release his director’s cut but instead want to release a “more accessible” version of the movie.
Now that the film finally has its release date set in place, the MPA Classification and Rating Administration has given Mickey 17 an R-rating “for violent content, language throughout, sexual content and drug material.” With the nature of the film containing multiple deaths of the main character, it’s natural to assume Bong gets to play...

“Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae was among the Korean celebrities to lead out a red carpet parade on the opening night of the 29th edition of the Busan International Film Festival. The festival kicked off Wednesday with a bright show of international solidarity and a spectacular, if controversial, Korean film from Netflix.
The ceremony, held under the semi-open roof of the futuristic Busan Cinema Center, was buoyant and attended by 4,500 guests, masking some the woes incurred by the festival itself and by the wider Korean film industry. Officials at the event debuted a new slogan — “Vision of Asia, Ocean of Cinema” — reflecting the South Korean port city’s revised ambitions ahead of next year’s 30th anniversary edition.
Last year, internal divisions ripped the festival management apart, causing sponsors to flee and a reduced budget. While some of the wounds have since been healed, replenished sponsorship and city government funds...

Jason Yu, a South Korean director, has found critical and box office success with his first feature film, “Sleep.” The psychological horror movie tells the story of a couple whose relationship is tested when the husband begins sleepwalking. Yu created realistic and unsettling portrayals of sleep disorders and marriage to craft an exploration of human psychology.
“Sleep” opens in U.S. theaters on September 27, 2024. Acclaimed director Bong Joon-ho praised the film, calling it “the smartest debut I’ve seen in ten years.” Yu started in an unlikely genre for a first-time director, as he was easily scared by horror movies himself. However, the subject matter of sleepwalking demanded the psychological horror format. Yu studied classics like “The Shining” and “Rosemary’s Baby” to inform his direction.
Lee Sun-kyun and Jung Yu-mi, known for “Parasite” and “Train to Busan” respectively, take the lead roles. Their characters resemble Yu’s own relationship with...

With the awards race ramping up, and festival favorites emerging, the list of films in the Best Picture Oscar race can seem long, and, this early in the season, distinctly unclear. Fortunately, both Deadline’s Awards Columnist and Chief Film Critic, Pete Hammond, and Film Awards Editor Damon Wise keep on hand an ever-evolving dossier of ones to watch. But then, of course, they don’t always agree. So, we got them together to boil it all down in a back-and-forth: What’s hot, what’s not, and what’s got big-prize potential. Bear in mind, there are, of course, more films yet to come, and for brevity’s sake, not every film with broad Oscar potential could be included in this discussion, but here are Hammond and Wise in conversation about some of the films on their maybe-Best-Picture lists right now. Click on each film’s title to read Deadline’s review.

The feature film debut of South Korean filmmaker Jason Yu, Sleep comes with big praise from Parasite director Bong Joon-Ho, who calls it “the smartest debut I’ve seen in ten years.”
And that debut horror film arrives this week. Magnet Releasing will unleash Sleep in theaters and on Digital on September 27, 2024.
The film stars veteran actors Lee Sun-kyun (Parasite) and Jung Yu-mi (Train to Busan) as a couple whose newlywedded bliss transforms into a nightmare when the husband’s new sleepwalking problem turns dangerous.
“I think it was two things,” the filmmaker said of landing on horror for his feature debut. “First, was that the subject matter itself sort of dictated itself into becoming a horror genre story. I couldn’t really see it any other way: a sleepwalking husband is wreaking havoc on the household. It felt suitable to become a horror film.

Meryl Streep is lending her voice to the climate change crisis — literally.
The Oscar-winning icon narrates “Want to Tell a Great Story,” a new PSA that debuted today from the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance made in partnership with the Nrdc’s Rewrite the Future.
“Hey, want to see a story about climate change?” Streep asks in the opening seconds before a series of clips from Get Out, The Lego Movie and Anchorman show characters saying “no” in quick succession. “We get it, we really do. Climate change is scary. It can make us feel, well, a little anxious. And we turn to movies and TV to escape. But what if we changed the question?”
Streep does just that and alters the query: “Want to see a great story? Stories can engage with the climate even as they entertain. Whether they are dramatic or funny or stories of courage, stories about protecting what you love,...

Ryoo Seung-wan, also known as “Action Kid,” is one of the major players in the Korean film industry today. He’s most famous for directing the 5th all-time highest grossing film in South Korean cinema history, action-comedy detective film “Veteran” (2015). In more recent years, he wrote and directed the South Korean entry for Best International Film at the 94th Academy Awards, “Escape from Mogadishu” (2021) – a Korean peninsular analog to “Argo” set in Mogadishu, Somalia.
This year, Ryoo Seung-wan showed up to Toronto International Film Festival with “I, the Executioner,” the long-awaited sequel to “Veteran.” Hwang Jung-min returns as Seo Do-cheol: still a dedicated detective, but this time also an unenthused husband and even more lackluster father. Though his son is mercilessly bullied at school, Seo Do-cheol is blasé about the situation. He has other priorities at hand – such as a serial killer on the loose, a viral Internet sleuth undermining his authority,...

In the opening few moments of The Substance, we’re given a potted history of the Hollywood Walk of Fame star for one Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore) from shiny and new through to weathered, cracked and having fast food dropped on to it. Although this is not quite the precise metaphor for Elisabeth’s career, her star is very much about to fall as she is unceremoniously dumped from her popular exercise show on her fiftieth birthday, no less.
Network exec Harvey (Dennis Quaid) breaks the news – in between close-ups of him troughing handfuls of glistening seafood – to Elisabeth with the cheerful “Well, what are you gonna do?” attitude of so many dreadful men out there. He goes on to announce that the audience is looking for someone more lithe and far younger, despite the various traffic stopping billboards of his current superstar which pepper the city.

The fall festival trifecta of Venice/Telluride/Toronto traditionally have been venues for the serious start of Oscar season. But that kind of awards-season mojo has been shifting, however slowly, with the most recent Best Picture winners, Oppenheimer and Everything Everywhere All At Once, released July and March of their respective years. In fact, the big Oscar opponent and BAFTA winner to the latter title, All Quiet on the Western Front, also defied the odds, having first played at Berlin in late winter of 2022, around the same time Everything Everywhere debuted at SXSW.
Cannes also has become a much bigger factor in recent years, launching such winners and contenders as Parasite, Once Upon a Time In Hollywood, Triangle of Sadness, Anatomy of a Fall, Drive My Car, The Zone f Interest and others that went on to Best Picture nominations. That goes against the previous common wisdom that Cannes was...

Bong Joon Ho fans have been anxiously awaiting a first look at some footage from the Award-winning Parasite director's next project for quite a while, and the first teaser trailer for Mickey 17 was released earlier this week.
Now, an international version has found its way online, and while a lot of the footage is the same (minus the Sinatra tune), there are quite a few new shots.
The (supposedly loose) adaptation of Edward Ashton’s best-selling novel, Mickey7, stars Robert Pattinson (The Batman) as the title character, who is repeatedly cloned to help with the colonization of a dangerous ice-planet.
Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette and Mark Ruffalo also star.
This trailer gives us a better idea of what to expect, as Mickey 17 joins forces with his latest clone, Mickey 18, in an attempt to stay alive when Mark Ruffalo's villain declares that all "multiples" - including the original - must be destroyed.

What could be better than one Robert Pattinson? Two Robert Pattinsons? Three? How about, say, 17? Because that's exactly what we're set to get in the aptly titled Mickey 17, the long-awaited latest film from Parasite Oscar winner Bong Joon Ho. Based on Edward Ashton's novel Mickey7, the Snowpiercer filmmaker's newest provocation — a self-written sci-fi comedy whose starry cast includes Mark Ruffalo, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, and Toni Collette among its ranks — sees R-Pattz star as eponymous Expendable (not that kind) Mickey Barnes, an unlikely hero on a dangerous mission to help colonise the icy world of Niflheim. The kicker? Whenever Mickey dies — and die he most assuredly does — his body is reprinted and brought back, memories intact. Sound crazy? Well, check out the first trailer below, because it's a whole lot crazier:
Now that's a trailer, folks! 'Ain't That A Kick In The Head' in the background, Robert...

Bong Joon-ho is on one hell of a hot streak. The South Korean filmmaker had already been turning out good stuff for a while when his 2013 sci-fi hit Snowpiercer brought him international acclaim, and he hasn't let off the gas since. Okja was a heartwarming takedown of the livestock industry and Parasite was a piercing class satire that became the first non-English language film to win an Oscar for Best Picture. In a world where Hollywood seems to only want to make reboots and sequels, Bong Joon-ho keeps coming up with original ideas and executing on them flawlessly. That's worth paying attention to.

Warner Bros. has finally released the first trailer for South Korean film director Bong Joon-ho’s “Mickey 17,” Bong’s follow-up to the 2020 Best Picture Oscar winner “Parasite.” Starring Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette, Naomie Ackie, and Mark Ruffalo, this is not Bong’s first time working with Hollywood actors (see “Snowpiercer” or “Okja”). But it is his first time working with a Hollywood studio.
And the increased budget absolutely shows. The film—set on vast spaceships and on imaginary planets—follows suit with the themes of his earlier work, mainly how workers get screwed by The Man. In the case of “Mickey 17,” they get screwed over and over, even after they die. The premise is that Pattinson signs up to be an “expendable” on some kind of interstellar work crew, which means his body is cloned should he perish due to an accident. His memories retain, however. Would you believe it if we told you how Bong Joon-Ho and Jordan Peele’s directorial fate almost collided in 2019? Well, apparently, after Peele had just released his horror mystery movie Us in 2019, Joon-Ho was awaiting the release of Parasite, following the completion of the film production. That’s when the latter came across Us and was left stunned by the similarities it posed to his then-upcoming movie.

Well, not just themes, according to Joon-Ho, Parasite, and Us also shared the exact same title that could have sparked a storm of controversy about plagiarism.

Award-winning director Bong Joon Ho is releasing a new sci-fi film called “Mickey 17” in January 2025. The movie stars Robert Pattinson in the title role of Mickey Barnes, an “Expendable” sent to help colonize the icy planet Niflheim. What makes Mickey unique is that he continuously dies in the name of science, with his memories and body replicated each time.
The movie is based on Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey 7.” The first trailer provides a glimpse at Mickey enduring various violent deaths. It shows Pattinson bringing his intense acting style to portray multiple versions of the same character. As more Mickey clones coexist, chaos and excitement reportedly ensue.
Bong is known for blending social commentary with dark humor in movies like “Snowpiercer” and “Okja.” “Mickey 17” appears to examine themes of identity and human worth in a futuristic setting. The director sweeps last year’s Academy Awards for “Parasite” and...

Robert Pattinson stars in Parasite director Bong Joon-ho’s sci-fi film, Mickey 17. After a number of delays, here’s the first trailer:
In the last year or so, Warner Bros seems to have gone on a charm offensive, wooing as many celebrated filmmakers as it can to the studio in an attempt to repair the damage its reputation has suffered under the stewardship of David Zaslav. You know what we’re talking about of course: deleting filmmakers’ finished work; throwing films onto its streaming platform on the same day as cinemas; upsetting Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Paul Thomas Anderson in one fell swoop.
The list goes on, hence Warner Bros’ attempts to work with as many admired directors as possible and restore the ‘filmmaker friendly’ reputation it was once known for. However, this modern incarnation of the famous old studio is still prone to more than the odd baffling decision,...

Robert Pattinson is sacrificing himself for science, literally, in the trailer for Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17. In the clip, Pattinson plays a man named Mickey who volunteers to be an “expendable” and is subject to repeated deaths in a futuristic world.
The comedic trailer, which sees the British Pattinson doing an unusual American accent, shows Mickey forced to die in violent ways in the name of research, with his body replicated each time he kicks the bucket. Eventually, though, two Mickeys exist at once, causing both chaos and excitement.

Robert Pattinson dies, and dies, and dies in the new trailer for Bong Joon-ho’s latest project “Mickey 17.”
Based on the 2022 novel “Mickey7” by Edward Ashton, the sci-fi thriller follows a down-on-his-luck Mickey (Pattinson), who signs up to die without reading the fine print. Mickey has donated his life to science, testing the limits of human nature and capabilities. But when one version of him dies, a clone is created in its place, retaining most of his memories and prepared to take on the next deadly mission.

It’s really been five years since Parasite? That revelation resonates with the trailer for Mickey 17, Bong Joon-ho’s first film since the Oscar-winning phenom and which, to be fair, was supposed to arrive in March, but the characteristically wacky Zaslav-era Warner Bros. delayed the film to January 31. Ahead of which there is, of course, a trailer for the feature starring Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo, shot by Darius Khondji, and based on Edward Ashton’s Mickey7.

"Why aren't you dead?" "We're multiples!" Warner Bros has finally revealed the first full trailer for the sci-fi movie Mickey 17, the next new Bong Joon-ho movie since he directed the Oscar-winning Parasite back in 2019. This has taken a long time to get a final 2025 release date confirmed - it was originally set for early 2024, then WB held it back for a year and now it's ready for release in January 2025. No other festivals or premieres anywhere. Robert Pattinson stars as Mickey Barnes, an "Expendable": a disposable employee on a human expedition sent to colonize the ice world Niflheim. There can't be more than two of them at the same time, but after he goes missing he comes back to discover another. Based on the acclaimed sci-fi novel by Edward Ashton. The cast features Naomi Ackie, Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Steve Park, Patsy Ferran, and Angus Imrie.

We don’t often get trailers so late in the day, but I’ll make an exception for Bong Joon-ho’s highly anticipated sci-fi movie Mickey 17. The darkly comedic trailer gets off to a great start with Mickey, played by Robert Pattinson, getting his hand gruesomely sliced off by a piece of space debris. From then on, Mickey dies again and again and again. Everything from industrial accidents to being devoured by space aliens. However, when multiple versions end up alive at the same time (a big no-no apparently), all hell breaks loose.
The official synopsis for Mickey 17 reads: “From the Academy Award-winning writer/director of “Parasite,” Bong Joon Ho, comes his next groundbreaking cinematic experience, “Mickey 17.” The unlikely hero, Mickey Barnes (Robert Pattinson) has found himself in the extraordinary circumstance of working for an employer who demands the ultimate commitment to the job… to die, for a living.

What do you do after you've won the Oscar for Best Picture? If you're Bong Joon-ho, you get right back to work to make another banger, and choose to make it potentially weirder and more studded with Hollywood stars than anything you've made before. The first full trailer for Bong's "Parasite" follow-up "Mickey 17" is finally here, and his adaptation of Edward Ashton's trippy sci-fi novel, "Mickey7," looks great — darkly funny, unnerving, and, yes, trippy.
The first sneak peek of the new movie came over a year ago, in December 2022. At that point, "Mickey 17" was due to hit theaters by early 2024, but it was subsequently delayed by what The Hollywood Reporter previously referred to "post-strike production shifts," which no doubt gave the movie's team more time to make it as sharp and cinematic as possible in post-production.

To those Mickeys about to die, we salute you. Robert Pattinson is killed over and over in the first trailer for Mickey 17, Bong Joon Ho’s long awaited followup to best picture winner for Parasite.
In the film, Pattinson plays Mickey Barnes, a space colonist known as an expendable. Expendables do the most dangerous jobs the colony has to offer, and often die in the process, only to be brought back to life via human printing technology.
Edward Ashton originated this world in his 2022 novel Mickey 7, which centers on the seventh iteration of Mickey Barnes. In the movie, that number has been increased to 17. “The number is the number of times he dies. I killed him 10 times more,” Bong said to laughs at CinemaCon in April, when he introduced the first footage. “It’s a sci-fi movie, but it’s a human story.”
Pattinson plays Mickey 17 and Mickey 18 in most of the story.
