The second season of the hit AMC spinoff series “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon” began with its premiere episode titled “The Kindness of Strangers.” The episode marked the return of fan favorite Carol Peletier, played by Melissa McBride, after she left the original “Walking Dead” series.
Carol’s comeback showed off her ability to survive dangerous situations. In one memorable scene, she escaped from a large group of walkers by rapidly building a shelter from greenhouse shelves. However, the episode focused more on Carol’s emotional state following the devastating loss of her daughter Sophia years ago on the original show. Viewers saw flashbacks of Sophia as a walker that stirred up Carol’s lingering grief.
This grief drove Carol’s actions in manipulating Ash, a kind pilot played by Manish Dayal. After Ash shared his own story of losing a son, Carol fabricated a tale that French officials took Sophia before the apocalypse.

In February 2023, Netflix will remove a bunch of movie and TV series from its library,
Netflix UK and Netflix US takes down numerous titles each month without fanfare, meaning that many things on your watchlist could suddenly disappear.
These removals are due to licencing deals coming to an end. Often, the titles make their way back to Netflix in the following year, but sometimes they leave to go to other platforms.
This month sees a selection of Netflix Originals being taken down, also.
To minimise surprise, we have put together a comprehensive list of everything being removed in both Netflix UK and US.

Danish helmer Lone Scherfig is already developing the second season of “The Shift[/link]”, she revealed on Monday during an online Berlinale Series Market talk “From Film to Series.”
Set in a maternity ward and starring Sofie Gråbøl and Pål Sverre Hagen, it’s the first series as a showrunner for Scherfig, who in 2019 opened Berlinale with “The Kindness of Strangers” and won a Silver Bear for “Italian for Beginners.”
“It’s a tribute to the people who work in the healthcare system under extreme pressure, to the care and the love they show, even despite tough working conditions,” she said. “The Shift” is produced by Creative Alliance, with Beta Film handling the sales.
Scherfig was joined by another Silver Bear winner, Argentine director Daniel Burman, back in Berlin with Amazon Prime Video’s “Yosi, the Regretful Spy” – the story of a secret agent infiltrating the Jewish community in Buenos Aires,...

The legacy of the late Ivan Reitman lives on with “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” (Sony/$5.99) for which he was the sole producer, repeated at #1 on all VOD charts this week. Its recent reduced price sustained a successful multi-platform run ($200 million theatrical worldwide) for a $75 million production.
The film was directed by his son and reflects a return to box office form for both. Reitman père had more than 20 projects in varying stages of development. “Afterlife” showed he remained vital in comedy, a genre that gets short shrift in theaters today.
VOD charts showed little change this week, including any impact from last Tuesday’s Oscar nominations. “Dune” (Warner Bros./$5.99) rose from last week, taking two #2 slots and placing on all three. The only other films among the top contenders to appear are “King Richard” (Warner Bros./$19.99), which is #7 at Vudu, and “Belfast” (Focus/$19.99), #10 at iTunes.

Since its launch in 2015, the Berlinale Series section has emerged as a kind of a boutique scripted TV fest set within a major film festival.
The Berlinale was famously the first A-list festival to embrace changing viewer habits and to officially incorporate television drama into its lineup — and this head-start is reflected in the growing stature of Berlinale Series.
Taking place over a concentrated three-day period (Feb. 14-16), Berlinale Series offers up seven world and international premieres from around 200 entries, giving each of them the red-carpet treatment at the Zoo Palast cinema.
Running parallel, the Berlinale Series Market — part of the European Film Market — offers up an online conference program, showcases and screenings. Its Berlinale Series Market Selects curates a selection of 14 series being traded on the market. Meanwhile, Co-Pro Series looks to pair 10 early-stage international series projects with co-producers and financiers through a series of pitches and meetings.

Since her Sundance hit An Education in 2009, Denmark’s Lone Scherfig has become something of an honorary Brit, specializing in prestige adaptations of best-selling English novels. Surprisingly, none of these ever quite tipped in the way An Education did, and after a mixed reaction to One Day (2011), which mostly rounded on Anne Hathaway’s Yorkshire accent rather than her performance, Scherfig’s first real attempt to tap into the American market — 2019’s The Kindness Of Strangers — was an uncharacteristic misfire and pretty much vanished into the ether after opening the Berlinale that year.
It would be tempting, then, to see The Shift, Scherfig’s debut as a series showrunner, as a palate cleanser. True, the series, which is screening in the Berlin Film Festival’s Berlinale Series strand, is closer to her 2000 breakout ensemble comedy-drama Italian For Beginners,...

Hollywood monster movie “Godzilla vs. Kong’ and Korean historical drama “Book of Fish” each made a claim to be the top film at the Korean box office. But neither could prevent weekend revenues from slumping.
“Fish,” which depicts the encounter between an early 19th century scholar who learns about nature and biodiversity and a peasant fisherman who aspires to better himself, sold the more tickets over the weekend and thus appears top in Korean charts.
“Fish” was directed by Lee Joon-ik, who has previously enjoyed a spectacular run of hit films including: “The King and The Clown,” “Sunny,” “The Throne” and “Dongju: Portrait of a Poet.”
“Godzilla” had higher ticket prices and marginally higher gross revenues. For the second weekend retained its claim to be the highest grossing film in the country. It earned $472,000, giving a cumulative total of $5.58 million since March 25, according to data from the Korean Film Council’s Kobis tracking service.

James Redford, filmmaker, environmental activist, philanthropist and the son of Robert Redford, has died. He was 58.
His wife, Kyle Redford, confirmed the news on Twitter, writing: “Jamie died today. We’re heartbroken. He lived a beautiful, impactful life & was loved by many. He will be deeply missed. As his wife of 32 yrs, I’m most grateful for the two spectacular children we raised together. I don’t know what we would’ve done w/o them over the past 2yrs. “
On Monday, she told The Salt Lake Tribune that Redford’s cause of death was bile-duct cancer in his liver. Redford had a history of liver disease, which returned two years ago. As he was awaiting a liver transplant last November, cancer was discovered in his bile duct.

A third of the way through the year, it’s safe to say that 2020 is unlike any we’ve ever faced. Cinemas are shut, large scale wide releases are on pause, and the only things being put out are independent titles, through Video On Demand services. Still, there are a great deal of quality films have that come out, along with several award worthy performances. Today, much like we did last month, we’re going to focus on these movies and acting turns, as a way of keeping a positive frame of mind. To be fair, a lot of these flicks and acting jobs will be repeats, but we’re just in a sort of holding pattern right now. Still, superior cinema is superior cinema… Let’s get right down to it. Below you’ll find my top ten of the year so far, along with my awards for the...

In some ways, it feels very silly to do this annual look at the best of the first quarter of the cinematic year. After all, the world has changed and the film world especially has come to a screeching halt. At the same time , a sense of normalcy however possible is always good. So, I’m pressing on and listing my favorite titles and work from the first three months of 2020. Obviously, a lot of high profile flicks were delayed, so whether I saw them or not, I’m not including them here. Still, including things I saw late in 2019 but hit this year, I had over 90 options to pull from. So, hopefully this is a Farley exhaustive list, even if it’s very much skewed by my personal taste. Let’s get right down to it. Below you’ll find my top ten of the year so far, along...

Despite its feel-good title, “The Kindness of Strangers” is a rather bleak movie, one so tied to the miseries of its characters that it’s difficult to see the point of it at all.
Perhaps there is no point other than to get a number of famous actors to occasionally cross paths in a dreary New York City in the winter. The movie functions like one of those star-studded Garry Marshall ensemble movies (“Valentine’s Day” or “New Year’s Eve”) but made terribly sad until the last few minutes, when a tacked-on happy ending arrives in time for the credits.
Written and directed by Lone Scherfig, “The Kindness of Strangers” begins with the story of Clara (Zoe Kazan) and her two young boys fleeing an abusive marriage. Most of her time on screen will be spent scavenging for supplies and figuring out how to keep living in the big city with...

How much weight do you put into a strong performance within a film that has its fair share of issues? Can a single turn lift up an entire project? Honestly, it really depends on the movie and the acting turn in question. Sometimes, it can be enough to warrant a recommendation, while at other times, it still falls a little bit short. In the case of this week’s new release The Kindness of Strangers, we’re faced with a similar situation. The flick is a mixed bag, though its ensemble cast is led by a wonderful performance by Zoe Kazan. In the end, she does manage to drag this one across the finish line, generating enough goodwill for a mild recommendation. The movie is a drama that takes its title largely literally. The lynchpin is Clara (Kazan), an abused wife who packs up her two sons Anthony (Jack Fulton...

What to watch for in the overseas film industry in 2020:
International Gains
Virtually every major U.S. entertainment company we speak with is thinking about how they can grow their international film and TV footprint, from Netflix to Cohen Media Group, Wme to CAA, Anonymous Content to FilmNation. As content (and creatives) cross borders more than ever, having a foothold in a foreign land is becoming essential in the fast-moving entertainment arms race. Netflix leads the way. When the streamer maxed out its subscriber potential stateside, so began an aggressive overseas push. In July, the online giant signed a deal to move into the UK’s Pinewood studios. The firm launched a Madrid studio 18 months ago and, despite its Cannes ban, has set up shop in Paris too. Italy, Germany and Scandinavia are ramping up. But the flow of business isn’t only from the U.S. as UK...

Clara (Zoe Kazan) arrives in New York with her two small children, on the run from an abusive partner- and that’s putting it mildly. He is a homicidal violent psychopath — and a NYC police officer. Her terror of him and fear for her boys — whom he abused violently — motivates her.
This Danish/Canadian co-production opened this year’s Berlin Film Festival, t
The story is very modern, a plotline I’d never seen before.
In short, The Kindness of Strangers is about a young woman wandering in New York City with no money, nowhere to go, nobody to help her with two small boys in tow. Her resultant, continuing interactions with a whole cast of strangers forms the storyline. Her desperate, determined continuous search for her boys’ safety, and her own, motivates her to keep running with no resources in a tough dark New York City.

by Alex DeleonNine year old actress Helena Zengel in her fourth filmOriginal title refers to a minor who breaks all the rules wantonly and recklessly.Amazing !Forget about all other contenders. In my book this tremendous study of a very troubled child and various concerned adults who are trying to save this lovable but uncontrollable kid from self destruction should easily take Best Film, Best Director, and the youngest Best Actress award ever, for amazing nine year old Helena Zengel.

Strife Itself: Scherfig Delivers Major Misfire with Manhattan Set Melodrama
Lest we forget, it was Blanche Dubois, the broken seductress of Tennessee Williams’ classic A Streetcar Name Desire, who famously uttered the timeless line “I always depend on the kindness of strangers” as she’s being carted off to an insane asylum. The line feels like the unintended albatross whose malingering shadow casts its pallor over Lone Scherfig’s maudlin soap opera, The Kindness of Strangers, an international co-production set in New York but lensed in Canada (which also lends an unmistakable inauthenticity to the proceedings). What’s most disappointing about Scherfig’s film, which she wrote herself (initially titled as Secrets of the Russian Tea Room) is it follows one of the Danish director’s (who has been steadily working abroad for some time) best titles, 2016’s Their Finest (which was an example of how the use of Bill Nighy...

While the international media industry grapples with the tectonic shifts triggered by the growing proliferation of streaming services, Zdf Enterprises is riding the wave of change by seizing opportunities, creating new business models and forging partnerships with the likes of Netflix and other digital players.
As the world sales, licensing and co-production arm of German broadcaster Zdf, Zdfe has long established itself as an independent player in both domestic and global markets and it is quickly adapting to the sector’s new reality.
The company has also expanded its sales and production operations through key acquisitions as part of its overall growth strategy.
“We have tried to embrace the changes, the disruption that these platforms have brought to the market through digitization and streaming possibilities, to recognize the opportunities rather than the threat,” Zdfe President and CEO Fred Burcksen tells Variety. “We have so far been able to profit from that.

A revival of the classic Hanna-Barbera costumed characters will have The Banana Splits leaning in to their creepy side.
As a child, I was scared by everything from the Blue Meanies from The Beatles' Yellow Submarine movie to Waylon Flowers' wise-cracking Madame puppet.
Admittedly, I was a weird kid.
But in my defense, growing up in the 1970s and '80s meant that you were bombarded with supposedly lovable characters who were in fact nothing but weaponized nightmare fuel.. Chief among these marketable terrors were the characters featured Hanna-Barbera's variety show/hellscape The Banana Splits.
Airing for two seasons from 1968-70, then repeated in syndication for perpetuity, this series combined the live-action antics of the animal-costumed characters Fleegle, Drooper, Bingo, and Snorky as they had indescrible adventures filmed at amusement parks that were intercut with other segments.

Well, here’s some interesting and weird movie news! the classic 1960s Hanna-Barbera kids program The Banana Splits is going to be making a come back as a film! But, there’s a little twist… it’s going to be a horror movie!
The Banana Splits is a TV series that premiered in 1968. It’s way before my time, and I’m not really familiar with it. But I went to YouTube to watch a few videos for it, and it definitely looks like it could and should be a psycho horror movie! Here’s a little description of it:
A laugh track-laden collection of live-action buffoonery and animated segments for undiscerning young minds. Whether in their crazy clubhouse or out cavorting among the public, costumed animal hosts Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snorky would engage in all manner of harmless nonsense, and even strap on musical instruments to perform hippie-dippie rock numbers.

Bingo, Fleegle, Drooper and Snorky, the zany collective better known as The Banana Splits, are coming back with a vengeance — and with a body count?
As revivals go, this one may be as audacious as it is unexpected: Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and Syfy are bringing back the Banana Splits, the trippy-dippy characters introduced back in 1968 as the anthropomorphic hosts of The Banana Splits Adventure Hour variety program. This time around, however, the Banana Splits are being served up in a horror thriller.
The original movie will premiere this year from Blue Ribbon Content, Warner Bros Television Group’s digital studio, via a Warner Bros. Home Entertainment release that will be followed by the television debut on Syfy. The official synopsis: “In the upcoming horror thriller, a boy named Harley and his family attend a taping of The Banana Splits TV show, which...
