Interesting... The scientific information about the chemical action of the action of love in the different minds of men and women is more interesting than the script and the novel itself...

This is a good movie. It might seem a bit simple in the beginning, but it is logical, analytical, educational, and medium entertaining, but it winds up everything that happens in a touching and beautiful conclusion/ending. Watch it all to the end..
Btw, I am a man.
Btw, I am a man.
No, it's not a documentary. At best it's a smart chick flick. That's not a bad thing though. It tells us a lot about the cerebral differences between males and females and it does it while telling a number of stories. And the stories are good and they're something most people can relate to.
But like another viewer said, watch it until the end. Not a waste of time.

I really like Whitney Cummings and I enjoyed the movie as well. I'm sad to see the poor reviews. I think it was informative and well acted. It was great to get all that information and still be entertained. I was never bored and I found it interesting and amusing.

I liked this movie. It was interesting and entertaining.
This was a good role for Whitney Cummings. I always so her as a comedian, but she manages to explore other acting abilities which I did not see before. A nice surprise.
The main romantic interest between Kevin and Julia works very well. The only problem: I wanted to see more of it, and less the other couples. It is regrettable it was not explored more. In fact, I would have liked to have seen this film just with the main story line, explored properly.
The Vergara / Cole storyline was particularly dull and disappointing; I wish they would have just cut it out from the film. The others were good enough, mildly entertaining, and casting was good (especially Marsden / Punch, which worked well).
Beanie Feldstein is always entertaining, and it was good to see her again.
To summarize, good movie, very watchable. I liked it.
p.s. I am also a man! ;-)

This film is a great way to educate people about the science behind relationships.
Cleverly written and performed - there is a great deal of brutal honesty here, but it
is made palatable through humor. The only downside is the ending. Don't want to
spoil it and besides....I may simply not like the ending because I'm a guy. It could be
a "chick-conclusion" that releases just the right chemicals women are addicted to.

I really wanted to like this movie since science-based comedies are so rare, and it did start very strong - the banter between Julia and Abby is hilarious, even if the science is somewhat dodgy (pheromones is especially nonsense, and it sounds like Julia has Co-dependency Disorder but was referenced only as a "childhood trauma"). However, after 20 minutes it all goes downhill when it starts to focus on the 3 couples in the study - they were just so annoying and not funny at all. I would have preferred the focus to remain on Julia and Abby, along with cameos from Kate McKinnon and Mayim Bialik to make it a truly knockout romantic geekfest...

I found the film entertaining overall. I think Whitney Cummings sought to make a movie with an underlying message of something women empowerment but the fact that I can't figure out what that is should tell you how well she accomplished her goal. By far, I found the most enjoyable couple to be Cecily Strong and Blake Griffin. They were both cute and hilarious together. I wish the entire film was just focused on their characters.
The idea of the movie is great, combine psychological/neurological facts with a rom-com film. But then the movie gets too greedy introducing many characters. The result we get is one dimensional characters with under developed backstories. Sadly, the cast is mostly made up of really big names and powerful actors that were not put to good use. Even Blake Griffin's pleasantly surprising acting ability couldn't save this film.

This movie is so good,
it's not a regular comedy it's a life comedy
And woman brain is fascinating
Forget the science, this was billed as a comedy. Speaking as a male I often find female comedy to be very good and incisive. Was hoping there'd be some clever put downs about males and their masculinity, the bitchiness of the sisters to each other but no. It seemed like a starters manual to neurosurgery with lame attempts at comic interpretation in life. Didn't watch it all as I'd need brain surgery later.
Ignore where Hulu or whatever threw this in the genre category. The people giving it a low rating just because they didn't find it funny are missing the point of the film. I mean, come on, some are writing in here that they didn't even watch the whole thing and you need to to get the point. Yes it has its funny moments but its not that kinda movie. It's to show us that, yeah, us guys get a bit competitive around eachother and our testosterone plays into it and women enjoy gossip because it helps them feel more in tuned to the society they are in. But we shouldn't jump the gun based on assumptions we may have with the opposite sex at times and at other times it's those differences that make eachother stronger. Whitney Cummings is brilliant. Anyone who's actually listened to her speak publicaly like when she's on Rogans podcast knows she knows her stuff so to say she's just making up what she is saying needs to pick up a book. Please watch this with an open mind and pay attention to the details it's trying to show.

Whitney Cummings is director and main actress of this brainwork (what a movie mostly is, always). It has some comedic, some drama, some pseudo (or call it superficial if you like) science elements.
I think that average rating at IMDB is pretty much realistic. Movie is not realistic, and that's the biggest flaw. Script is what is not realistic, and direction makes it just worse in many cases. So, I would say that it targeted too high, or to use again word what came most time to my mind: they had unrealistic expectations for them self. Older married couple was presented really poorly. That was too lifeless, of course even for tired one. Main 'romance' was everything but not romance - what means of course that those who called this rom-com are wrong - not romance, not comedy - although comedy at least worked sometimes. Our brave researcher Julia acted in that very first 'date' complete like some android programmed for stereotypical male. While male (Kevin) did everything to show that he is not acting according to stereotype. That just worked not - too unrealistic. Sure, comedy is not something what aims to be much realistic, but this just went to far. Again - lifeless.
And the ending ... it was rather like making some contract, just without lawyers and papers.
At the end couple of Lucy Punch + James Marsden appeared as best in all this. No, not great, just least bad.
Ratings:
Script: 3
Direction: 5
Acting overall: 6

I usually like Whitney's stand up and liked her TV series, but this was so slow and not funny. I bailed at the 30 minute mark. Good cast but bad writing.

I'm really not sure why this film isn't getting better reviews here. It may not be an Oscar contender, but I think it was far more clever, witty, relatable and interesting than any other rom com I've seen in a while.

Went into this with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised. The characters came to life and were believable and sympathetic. In the era of Riefenstahlesque superhero movies that is a welcome alternative... Thanks.

While I can appreciate taking a different route to a "men and women" comedy, this movie relies too hard on the narration explaining the science behind almost every action in the movie.
There are smart movies, and movies that try to prove how smart they are - and unfortunately this falls hard into the latter. Nobody is a fan for lumpy expositional dialogue, and this only takes it one step further behind not only explaining what a character is thinking at any time (even in moments so small as answering the phone) but the reason why they fee what they feel.
There is a good movie in here somewhere, and the actors do try to elevate the material - but it feels overall half-cooked and rushed.
On the positive, Cecily Strong is a true highlight (when is she not?)

This movie had a few funny scenes but it was horrible. Do not waste your time on this. It's too bad because it has a decent cast.
I am a retired neuroscientist. The science here is reasonable albeit simplified, and that works. I watched with skepticism and was initially appalled at the investigator's desire to retest until the data was more suitable. That would be nonsense. But the mea culpa resolved that. This indicates the direction was perfect. I was supposed to be upset (tension), and the tension was resolved with humility and self awareness. Brilliant. Each of the four romances were real, both sides were treated fairly. If I were nitpicking I would say the athlete owes more apology but that is the point really. We live with flawed people. We are flawed. Best line: " Jet lag is a social construct". Hilarious.
This was a very good film which I just saw on a plane overseas. I was laughing aloud in the cabin. Its typical Whitney humor. I cannot yet figure out the low star rating for this film, and in general why this clever writer/actor/director doesn't seem to get many critical or popular breaks. Her maiden show, Whitney, which had a great ensemble cast, was prematurely cancelled IMHO. But I'm glad the underwriters continue to give her some vehicles, as she does have a message. We saw her standup where she gave our her latest book, I'm Fine, which is also very funny as well. Anyway, if you haven't yet, give this film a chance. There is so much more blather out there that get 7's or above. This one deserves at least that.
I made an imdb account just for this. The first few negative reviews were just silly. To preface I'm a man, since it seems we already hijacked the review board.
I was confused in the beginning as to whether this was a documentary or a rom com, but quickly realized it was the latter. The narrator makes a lot of interesting claims that deserve further discussion. A number of different male/female pairs were presented, and somewhat as caricatures of stereotypes, sure. The actors were believable and although I said they were a bit stereotypical, still relate-able and reasonable. The "don't straighten my hair" dude was a bit annoying and imbalanced.
I don't know where people are upset about man hating or painting them as misogynistic. From the perspective of the narrator that's the point, and it never got past the shallow end. See how the movies concludes before judging... I found the narrator to be an equal offender and spent most of the time laughing with my girlfriend.
It did what it could to deal with a loaded topic and 1.5 hours. I wouldn't say it's particularly deep or that i'll remember it a year from now, but we had a great time and were left with a feeling of warmth as well as even, acceptance?
If you swing too far to either side of the spectrum you might not find much here. But good times for the rest of us. I feel like this book and movie was an attempt to bring back a little sanity to the discussion.
