Indie filmmaker Sean Baker lamented the diminishing quantity of films not geared toward the superhero, action flick or horror genres.
“What I miss,” Baker began in a recent interview with the Associated Press, “where are the mature film for adults that had human stories, that didn’t have to have explosions or didn’t have to have superheroes or a horror-based [concept]? Where are those?”
The Anora helmer listed such titles as the multi-Oscar-winning Kramer vs. Kramer, as well as films by Jonathan Demme and Robert Altman.
“Where are they these days? They don’t exist, unfortunately, or they’re very few and far between. And it’s like, let’s get the audience to remember that that stuff is just as worthy of being on the big screen as the big tentpole films, the big blockbusters.”

Neon has debuted the second US trailer for Anora, the beloved Palme d'Or winner from the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, made by acclaimed filmmaker Sean Baker. This has been getting rave reviews from everyone since Cannes, with stops at TIFF and NYFF. Ani, a young sex worker from Brooklyn who works nightly as a stripper in Manhattan, gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and then impulsively marries the son of a Russian oligarch named Vanya (aka Ivan). Once the news reaches Russia, their little fairytale is threatened as the parents set out for New York to get the marriage annulled. So begins 24 hours of stressful NYC mayhem as hired goons pick her up and try to find Ivan. Mikey Madison stars as Ani as one of this year's big breakouts, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, & Vache Tovmasyan.

“Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Scream” breakout Mikey Madison is heading to the Strip…in Las Vegas, that is.
Madison leads Sean Baker‘s “Anora,” which has been deemed an Oscar frontrunner with Madison as an actress to watch this awards season. Madison plays an exotic dancer and sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn). Vache Tovmaysa, Yura Borisov, and Baker’s frequent collaborator Karren Karagulian also star.
Baker will be the keynote speaker at IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking Summit.
“Anora” won the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2024, and was the first American film to win since Terrence Malick’s “Tree of Life” in 2011. “Anora” will be released by Neon, which handled the distribution of fellow Palme d’Or winners “Parasite,” “Triangle of Sadness,” and “Anatomy of a Fall,” which all went on to be Oscar-nominated. “Parasite” and “Anatomy of a Fall” both won Oscars.

The Mami Mumbai Film Festival is excited to announce that this year’s Closing Film will be Anora, directed by Sean Baker. The film will have its South Asia premiere on October 24, 2024, the final day of the festival, providing a spectacular conclusion to a lineup filled with world-class cinema.
Since its debut at the 2024 Festival de Cannes, where it garnered the esteemed Palme d’Or, Anora has captivated audiences. Distributed by Warner Bros. Discovery in India, the film combines Baker’s signature empathy for marginalized characters with screwball dramedy, narrating the tale of Ani (Mikey Madison), a Brooklyn sex worker entangled with the Russian mafia.
Baker, who previously served as the head of jury for the International Competition section at Mami in 2018, continues his exploration of marginalized and often overlooked individuals in society, a theme evident in his previous works like Tangerine and The Florida Project.

Tuesday delivered a big night for Mikey Madison.
“Are you kidding me? This is where I’m from. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and my entire family is here to see this movie for the first time. It’s a little nerve-wracking, too,” revealed the actress while standing outside the iconic Vista Theater in the city’s Los Feliz neighborhood. Madison, 25, has been acting for more than a decade and done many red carpet premieres in her career but the occasion of sitting through Anora for the first time amped up the anxiety with her siblings and best friend also in the building.

Sean Baker’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anora will open this year’s Stockholm Film Festival, organizers said Tuesday.
Scream and Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood actress Mikey Madison stars as the titular character in the screwball dramedy, playing a sex worker in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, who gets mixed up with the son of a Russian oligarch.
Anora premiered in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it took the top prize for best film. Baker has been touring the festival circuit with the feature, screening Anora at Telluride, Toronto and the San Sebastián film festivals.
The Hollywood Reporter‘s festival review praised Madison’s performance, saying she plays Anora “with a sweetness that humanizes even the most transactional situations and a defensiveness that makes her dangerous when threatened.”
Anora‘s next stop will be Sweden, where the film will kick off the 2024 Stockholm Film Festival on Nov.

Sean Baker has carved a niche as a filmmaker powered by empathy for the overlooked and forgotten corners of American society. Through his lens, we are allowed to immerse ourselves in worlds that most other movies would paint in the broadest strokes, or reduce to simple cliches. His compassion is a cornerstone in films like "Tangerine" and "The Florida Project," where the marginalized take center stage and are allowed to be as messy and complex as anyone with a movie built around them.
But Baker's work is also funny. Riotously so. And while his subject matter demands a sharp edge (which he certainly supplies), he's a storyteller with one foot proudly rooted in tradition. His latest film, "Anora" is an instantly towering work that's as empathetic and as moving as always. Yet it's also content to often be just a good time at the movies: an increasingly ludicrous odyssey...

After realizing his dream of winning the Palme d’Or for “Anora,” what is next for Sean Baker? Maybe an erotic film, but certainly not a major studio project.
Speaking at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, the latest stop for his Cannes breakout title, the director said winning the prize will “allow me to continue to make the films I want to make in the way I want to make them and continue getting budgets along the size of ‘Anora.’ It puts me in the place where I want to be. I’m not looking for it to get me a Marvel film or to open doors with studios. That is certainly not my intention.”
Despite “Anora” being yet another entry to Baker’s canon of stories about sex work — which includes films such as “Red Rocket” and “Tangerine” — the director is reluctant to say his movies are about sex.

Sean Baker, director of Cannes’ Palme d’Or winner Anora, discussed the success of his latest movie at a San Sebastian Film Festival event Saturday, admitting that he won’t be using the momentum to take on big-budget studio films like Marvel’s.
Baker spoke to a packed crowd about his film — now receiving Oscar buzz — which follows Anora (Mikey Madison), a young sex worker from Brooklyn, who gets her chance at a Cinderella story when she meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn). But the fairytale is threatened when her fiancé’s parents set out to get the marriage annulled. The story has drawn comparisons to the Julia Roberts standby Pretty Woman.

Illustrations by Maddie Fischer. As the vaporetto pulled out of San Marco and veered east toward the Lido, I decided I’d kick off my tenth trip to the Venice Film Festival doing something I’d never done before: visit its Extended Reality section. Tucked away on a little island that once served as a leper colony, Venice Immersive is home to dozens of VR projects slotted in competitive and non-competitive programs every year. I had no idea what to expect from this edition, though a cursory glance at the menu suggested a motif. Aside from titles that vowed to explore new formats and ideas around spectatorship, there were several that felt true to our era of anxious, restless doomscrolling. Catastrophes, tragedies, and crises were at the cornerstone of the handful of works I saw, including Asio Chihsiung Liu and Feng Ting Tsou’s Somewhere Unknown in Indochina, a study...

To mark the shift in dates, the festival will produce a special two-day Svff Winter Screening Series on Dec. 6-7.
Executive director Teddy Grennan said, “When we started in 2012, we scheduled the Festival in the spring to help drive tourism in an otherwise quieter time of the year. “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is bringing some beloved characters back to fans, but the sequel is also introducing a few fresh faces — relatively speaking, considering they might be dead.
Once again directed by Tim Burton, the sequel takes place 30 years after the original, bringing the Deetz family back together for Charles’ death. At this point, Lydia (Winona Ryder) is fully grown with a daughter of her own, who discovers the mysterious remnants of Beetlejuice left in the attic.
We won’t spoil anything here, but we will give you a rundown of who’s who in the “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” cast and the characters they’re playing, old and new.
Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) Warner Bros.
The juice is loose yet again, and he’s played by Michael Keaton once more. Keaton is, of course, perhaps best known as Beetlejuice and Batman, but you’ll also from “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Spotlight” and “Birdman.”

This year’s Telluride Film Festival was not short on mononyms. There was Martha, as in Stewart, the subject of R.J. But with due respect given to the acclaimed names above, none made a bigger impact on the festival than “Anora.” Sean Baker’s bold, hilarious, exhilarating new film had its North American debut in Colorado over Labor Day weekend, and the Palme d’Or winner played to packed houses and was often mentioned as a standout among attendees. People are falling in love with “Anora.”
Sean Baker has made his mark on indie cinema with notable features such as “The Florida Project” and “Red Rocket.” His latest film, “Anora,” a reimagining of “Pretty Woman” that trades Richard Gere’s debonair corporate raider for Mark Eydelshteyn’s sex-crazed son of a Russian oligarch, is his most accessible project yet. And just as “Pretty Woman” launched Julia Roberts into the stratosphere, Mikey Madison’s turn as a less glamorous sex worker has made her the year’s breakout performer. Following its Palme d’Or win at Cannes in May, the film made its U.S. premiere at the Telluride Film Festival to a sold-out crowd. Its subsequent screenings were turning away approximately 200 people at each, making it one of the hottest tickets at the festival alongside Sony’s “Saturday Night” and Netflix’s “Emilia Perez.”

Director Sean Baker‘s “Anora” won the grand prize, the Palme d’Or, at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. It was the first American film to claim top honors at the prestigious international competition since “The Tree of Life” in 2011. Does that mean it’s in good shape going into Oscar season? Despite its world renown, Cannes is hit-and-miss when it comes to anointing later awards contenders, often selecting art films that don’t end up resonating with the industry insiders in the academy. But in recent years the Oscars have been on the same page as the Cannes jury more often.

The career trajectory of character actor extraordinaire Willem Dafoe is one of the more unusual among contemporary Hollywood stars. From his early days of being routinely cast as a heavy, Dafoe worked his way through the system thanks to the sheer force of his talent, finally being cast as leads, often portraying in detail such real-life figures as actor Max Schreck, artist Vincent Van Gogh and even Jesus Christ.
Among Dafoe’s early bad guy roles were as biker gang leaders in both Kathryn Bigelow‘s “The Loveless” and Walter Hill‘s “Streets of Fire.” But his performance as kindly Sgt. Elias in Oliver Stone‘s “Platoon” changed all that, resulting in his first Academy Award nomination. Three more Oscar nominations followed, and Dafoe has also earned three Golden Globe nominations and four noms from the Screen Actors Guild.

While San Diego Comic-Con continues to bring one surprise after another, a bear hopes to steal some of the spotlight with news about sticking its snoot into more nose candy for Cocaine Bear 2. According to industry scooper Daniel Rpk, a sequel to last year’s dark comedy thriller Cocaine Bear is in the works, with Elizabeth Banks producing and possibly getting back behind the camera as the project’s director.
Speaking with Rolling Stone last year about a possible sequel, Banks told the outlet, “I had an absolutely great time working on the (first movie). I loved how subversive, crazy, silly, and funny it was. I loved surprising people with the cast. I don’t think anybody was expecting Margo Martindale, who’s 70 years old, to shoot that kid. We had a lot fun, and if I got the opportunity to surprise the audience and delight myself again, I would take it.

Over the last decade, Sean Baker has proven himself to be one of the great American independent filmmakers of the 21st century. From iPhone-shot LGBT drama Tangerine, to spellbinding motel-set coming-of-age movie The Florida Project, to Simon Rex starrer Red Rocket, the writer-director has made a fascinating filmography out of studying characters living amidst the rubble of the American Dream. His latest, Palme d'Or winner Anora, looks set to continue that trend as Baker tells a wild love story revolving around American stripper Anora (Mikey Madison) and Russian oligarch son Vanya (Mark Eidelstein). Check out the first trailer for the film below;
Hoo boy — the Pretty Woman meets Uncut Gems vibes are strong with this one! Set to Blondie banger 'Dreaming', this propulsive first look at Anora is a real tale of two halves. The first half plays out like a 21st century spin on the Richard Gere and Julia Roberts...

The trailer for the Neon movie sees Anora heading to Las Vegas and running into a little, white chapel, after which she and her new husband are pursued by fixers trying to break up the new marriage. Along the way, there is plenty of partying, private jets, and shopping for furs. The film has drawn comparisons to the Julia Roberts standby Pretty Woman.
Anora, Baker’s follow-up to Red Rocket, earned high praise from critics out of Cannes, where is took home the Palme d’Or.

On Monday, Neon released the trailer for “Anora,” writer-director-producer-editor Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning film. It’s American audiences’ best look so far at the highly anticipated comedy-drama.
Neon describes “Anora” simply as a “love story.” It stars Mikey Madison as Anora — Ani for short — a sex worker from the Russian enclave of Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. When she meets Vanya (Mark Eidelstein), the young son of a Russian oligarch, she gets swept up in a whirlwind romance that culminates in their elopement. Vanya’s parents are not happy and come to New York to force the couple to annul their marriage. But Anora is a scrapper, and she’s not going to be told what to do.

The trailer for “Anora,” Sean Baker’ Palme d’Or-winning tale of the love story between a sex worker and the son of a Russian oligarch, is finally here.
The dramedy follows Anora (Mikey Madison), an Uzbek-American stripper whose boss often sets her up with Russian-speaking clients. One night, she meets Vanya (Mark Eidelstein), the wealthy young son of a Russian oligarch who pays to make her his girlfriend for the week. Unexpectedly, the two fall in love and elope — but the fairytale is threatened when Vanya’s parents find out.
“Anora” premiered at Cannes Film Festival in May to a 7.5-minute standing ovation and near universal acclaim. In Variety‘s review, chief film critic Peter Debruge called the movie a “rowdy Safdie-style movie about two cultures (Russian and American), two languages (Russian and English) and two currencies (money and sex).” At the Cannes closing ceremony, “Anora” won the festival’s...

The name of A24 studio is familiar to every cinema lover, and you have definitely seen at least one of its movies. These include such gems as Lady Bird (2017), Midsommar (2019), Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) and this year’s hit Civil War.
However, even in spite of the fact that all these movies were top-grossing sensations, they can be beaten by 2017’s drama you may have missed. It stars the accomplished industry’s giant, Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse), who is no stranger to A24’s films.
The movie’s plot revolves around Moonee, a 6-year-old girl who lives with her unemployed mother Halley in a cheap motel in Florida. Their struggles not to become homeless and not to starve took place just near the Walt Disney World luxury resort.
While Halley is trying to make ends by doing sex work, Moonee is left alone as she peeps into the adult world,...

When is documentary filmmaking not quite a documentary? When filmmaker Morrisa Maltz does what she does best and fills in a blank canvass with her uniquely lived-in, understated, and wholly authentic paintbrush. The most headline-making aspect of "Jazzy" will likely be the fact that it acts as a sort of spiritual sequel to Maltz's previous effort, the Lily Gladstone-starring "The Unknown Country" that released to great acclaim in 2022. The similarly low-key indie also happened to feature a minor supporting character nicknamed Jazzy, who now steps up to take the spotlight as the main protagonist this time around. Still, the most immediately approachable aspect of this follow-up film, which also includes a cameo appearance by Gladstone's character Tana but otherwise stands entirely on its own to the benefit of newcomers, has to do with the strength of its central coming-of-age story — one that, as revealed in the end credits,...

Baker’s past credits include The Florida Project and Red Rocket. The director’s low-budget features about people overlooked by society have become critical hits and awards season contenders.

Neon has dated their fifth Cannes Palme D’Or winner Anora for Oct. 18 per Comscore in what will be a limited release.
October is the traditional launch pad for Neon with their Palme D’Or winning fare including 2019’s ultimate Oscar Best Picture winner Parasite (Oct. 11), 2021’s Titane (Oct 1), 2022’s Triangle of Sadness (Oct. 7), and last year’s Oscar winner Anatomy of a Fall (Oct. 13). Of the five, and granted it was pre-pandemic, Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite did the best at the domestic B.O. with $53.3M, arguably the fourth highest grossing foreign language (and foreign produced) movie stateside after Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Life Is Beautiful and Zhang Yimou’s Hero.

“Anora,” Sean Baker’s comic look at an exotic dancer and sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, will hit theaters next fall. The film will open in limited release on Oct. 18 from Neon.
It’s a lucky time of year for the indie studio. Neon previously launched “Parasite” on Oct. 11, debuted “Triangle of Sadness” on Oct. 7 and opened “Anatomy of a Fall” on Oct 13. Like “Anora,” all three of those films premiered at Cannes and won the Palme d’Or, the festival’s top honor. “Anora” was the first U.S. film to earn the prize since 2011’s “Tree of Life” from director Terrence Malick.
In a rave review for Variety, Peter Debruge enthused that the film was the “uncut gem of this year’s Cannes competition,” adding that it is “a rowdy Safdie-style movie about two cultures (Russian and American), two languages (Russian and English...

This past week at Cannes Film Festival, American filmmaker, Sean Baker, took home one of the most prestigious film festival awards that directors can only dream of—the Palme d’Or award. The Palme d’Or is the highest award at Cannes, with past winners including ‘Anatomy of a Fall’ and ‘Parasite’. While Baker’s films seem as though they are reaching their mainstream attention, Baker’s past successes in direction have truly demonstrated that he is one of his generation’s greatest directors.

Before becoming an independent producer and story consultant, filmmaker Rona Edwards spent several years working in creative development for production shingles headed by the likes of John Larroquette (the Emmy-winning actor) and Michael Phillips (the Oscar-winning producer.) Since striking out on her own, Edwards has had her own projects set up in both television and feature film at places like NBC, USA Network, Warner Bros, HBO and Lifetime TV.
With business partner Monika Skerbelis, Edwards also co-wrote the books The Complete Filmmaker’s Guide to Festivals: Your All Access Pass to Launching Your Film on the Festival Circuit and I Liked It, Didn’t Love It: Screenplay Development from the Inside Out, currently in its 3rd edition. (Check out our interview earlier this year with Monika Skerbelis here.)

Cannes awards have become hugely influential in subsequent awards races, especially the Oscars. The top honor, the Palme d’Or, confers prestige and a stamp of approval — this year from the Competition jury led by multi hyphenate Greta Gerwig — that awards voters take seriously.
Palme winners “Parasite,” “Triangle of Sadness,” and “Anatomy of a Fall” were all Best Picture Oscar contenders and won Oscars. And they were all picked up by specialty distributor Neon before they won their Cannes prize. Neon did not break its streak. It acquired two eventual prize-winners before the closing ceremony: Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner “Anora,” the first American film to win the prize since Terence Malick’s “Tree of Life” in 2011, and Iranian dissident filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig,” which took home a special award.
