Meryl Streep is predicted to extend her Golden Globes record with a 33rd nomination for her star turn in the Netflix musical “The Prom.” She plays a Broadway diva down on her luck who seizes on the plight of a high school senior (Jo Ellen Pellman) prevented from taking her girlfriend to the prom. Streep shines in the musical numbers and has some lovely quieter moments as well. Not surprisingly, this favorite of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. sits atop our Best Musical/Comedy Actress chart.
Streep has won a record eight Golden Globes from her 32 nominations to date. Seven of those victories have been for films (her single TV win came for her leading role in the 2003 HBO limited series “Angels in America”). Her first time to the podium was way back in 1980 for her supporting role in “Kramer vs. Kramer.” She went on to win her first Oscar for that featured performance.

We are predicting that Meryl Streep will have to make more room on her already crowded mantle as she is tipped to take home her ninth Golden Globe for her star turn in the Netflix musical “The Prom.” Streep sits atop our Best Musical/Comedy Actress chart for her role as a Broadway diva hoping to revitalize her career by promoting the plight of a high school girl (Jo Ellen Pellman) who is prevented from taking her girlfriend to the prom. Streep dazzles in a string of song-and-dance numbers and has some lovely quieter moments too.

Well, it took four full weeks, but the first queen has finally been eliminated from RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 13. (Our condolences, by the way.)
Friday’s episode brought the “winning” and “losing” teams together for the first time all season (and with a shady little twist to boot). While Elliott With 2 Ts hid just off screen, the winners asked the losers why they chose to vote Elliott out, with Kahmora Hall replying, “I just really didn’t get what her drag style was” — words she would find herself eating seconds later when Elliott emerged for yet another Drag Race face crack.

Arthur P. Siccardi, a longtime Broadway production supervisor whose five-decade career included work on such notable original and revival stagings as Sweeney Todd, Whose Life is it Anyway?, Sunday in the Park with George, Gypsy, The Heidi Chronicles and Sunset Boulevard, to name a few, died December 23 of complications from pneumonia. He was 89.
His death was announced by his son Drew Siccardi.
Born in Englewood, NJ, and raised in Fort Lee, Siccardi began his professional life as a minor league baseball pitcher for the Johnson City Cardinals from 1951-53. An employment offer to work as a show carpenter on the original national tour of Gypsy led to what would be his life’s work.
Siccardi established Arthur Siccardi Theatrical Services in 1975 at the suggestion of Michael Bennett, and he’d go on to work with such notable directors as Mike Nichols, Jerome Robbins, Tommy Tune, Gower Champion, Trevor Nunn and Michael Blakemore.

Film commentaryThese three recent south Indian releases, belonging to different genres, engage with ideas on faith and religious values. Sowmya RajendranNetflix series A Suitable Boy recently ran into trouble for showing a Muslim man and a Hindu woman kissing in a temple. Apart from the expected outrage on social media from right wing handles, an Fir was also filed against officials of the Over the Top (Ott) platform. The representation of religion on screen has periodically run into controversy with religious groups and the government, as in the case of films like Mani Ratnam's Bombay, Rahul Dholakia's Parzania, Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam, Rajkumar Hirani's Pk or more recently Raju Murugan's Gypsy. In the current political climate, such outrage and censorship have become the norm, with a communal angle given to characters, scenes and subjects even if the film ostensibly does not deal with religion or communalism. In such a scenario,...

Cutting to the chase, which is something “The Undoing” never does: HBO’s new limited series is not worth your time. Unless you’re an aspiring Hugh Grant-aissance completist, David E. Kelley’s latest attempt to recapture that “Big Little Lies” magic falls flatter than a marmalade sandwich minus the marmalade. Shot like a pulpy ’90s erotic thriller by Susanne Bier and stretched thinner than the Netflix version it echoes (remember “Gypsy”?), there’s very little entertainment to be had here, and even less of a purpose.
Still, respect must be paid to the Grant-aholics. Given the mounds of goodwill (and awards buzz) he’s earned for his latest work, I, too, might be tempted to take a peek at his latest prestige turn, so the following review will be as light as possible on spoilers.

Netflix has produced many hit TV shows over the past seven years, ever since they started pumping out their own original programming. However, the streaming service has developed a reputation for not letting its series go on for too long. Fans know to be wary of getting attached to their favorite new Netflix shows as they could be unceremoniously cancelled after one or two seasons.
Earlier today, for instance, Hilary Swank vehicle Away was given the chop by the company after just a single outing. This makes it the 56th original series that Netflix has cancelled. That number only includes shows that were original to the platform and produced in-house, so it doesn’t count pick-ups like Lucifer, for example. Those series luckily enough to end on the creators’ own terms, such as House of Cards, are likewise not included. Shows that were axed by Netflix before being picked up elsewhere,...

On Aug. 11, 1943, Variety carried a story beginning “Angela Lansbury, 17-year-old English girl, is the colony’s latest Cinderella.” The story said she had gone from an unknown to movie star in only four days.
Since then, Lansbury has forged a career that defies all logic. She received supporting-actress Oscar nominations twice in her first two years of work. At age 41, she became a musical-comedy star with “Mame.” She became a TV star with “Murder, She Wrote” at age 59, an age when most actresses can’t find work. In the show’s 12-year run, she was one of the TV industry’s most powerful women. Maybe her biggest accomplishment: Though powerful women were sometimes maligned, it was thought you needed to be heartless to survive in showbiz, Lansbury has created a 77-year career and nobody has a bad word to say about her.

Third time’s the charm? After 22 years since her most recent acting nomination at the Primetime Emmys, Bette Midler returns for what is only her third shot at an acting win: Best Comedy Guest Actress as the sharp-tongued political chief of staff Hadassah Gold in “The Politician.” Should Midler prevail, it would be her fourth overall Emmy win, but her first for acting, all thanks to a scene-stealing turn in the season one finale episode “Vienna.”
While almost all of “The Politician” season one takes place during the high school years of Payton Hobart (Ben Platt), the finale episode “Vienna” jumps ahead three years to his life in New York as he begins a campaign to unseat long-time state senator Dede Standish (Judith Light). Midler is in the mix as Standish’s chief of staff, a door-opening and deal-making mouthpiece for the respected politician.

Exclusive: On March 13, two days after the coronavirus was declared a pandemic, Broadway’s Tony Award-winning Laura Benanti walked outside of her parents’ home in New Jersey – where the actress-singer was isolating with her husband and three-year-old daughter – and gave what might be the closest thing to a commencement address many students will experience this year.
Benanti, who won the Tony for 2008’s Gypsy, was a standout as Baroness Elsa Schräder in NBC’s 2013 The Sound of Music Live!, and was more Melania than Melania herself in recurring appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, turned on her phone camera and began talking, commiserating with high school students across the country whose musical productions had been scuttled by the pandemic. She urged the kids to send their video performances to her, to be seen.

Infinite, a sci-fi film from director Antoine Fuqua, made a major change with Mark Wahlberg as its new headliner, replacing Chris Evans. Indeed, while Avengers: Endgame was the expected, well, endgame of Evans’s tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Captain America (maybe?), the actor happens to have several starring roles on his docket. Consequently, with regards to Infinite, Chris Evans—unlike Cap—didn’t want to “do this all day.”
Mark Wahlberg replaced Chris Evans as the headlining star of Infinite, as Variety reported back in June 2019. Evans, who had been attached to the project since that February, dropped out due to scheduling issues. Star-swap notwithstanding, the fast-tracked movie project will adapt author D. Eric Maikranz’s 2009 novel, The Reincarnationist Papers. Prolific producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Vahradian are onboard via the former’s Paramount-based Di Bonaventura Pictures, joined in that capacity by John Zaozirny, along with executive producer Rafi Crohn.

OpinionA few years ago, it was also not common for a mainstream, "mass" film to be dissected from different perspectives as it is now - gender, caste, class and so on. Sowmya RajendranPTI/Image for representation onlyThe last two releases from the Tamil film industry - Mohan G's Draupathi and Raju Murugan's Gypsy - have renewed the debate on who should review films and how they should be reviewed. While the first film has been called casteist and drubbed by a section of reviewers, it has been celebrated by other reviewers. Gypsy, which takes on communalism, and underwent numerous cuts at the censors, is being celebrated for its politics by a section of reviewers, but drubbed by other reviewers for its preachy tone. It's not only the film industries which raise these questions but the reviewing community itself. Before the explosion of social media, say till 2010 or so, film...

Another individual close to the company noted production has not yet hit its stride — though “Luck” has faced other roadblocks on the way to completion. Actress Emma Thompson publicly...

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is closing the curtain on season one, and it's a wild ride. The finale, which aired on Jan. 10, is jam-packed with nostalgia as the students at East High put on their very own production of High School Musical, but it also includes plenty of drama (on and off the stage). Ricky and Nini profess their love for each other, Gina might be returning to East High after all, and Big Red and Ashlyn finally solidify their romance.
With all the twists and cliffhangers, we already have tons of questions about what's to come. Thankfully, the Disney+ series has already been renewed for season two, so we won't have to wait too long for answers. In the meantime, we went straight to the source to chat with showrunner Tim Federle on everything from the Nini/Ricky/Gina love triangle to how the second season...

Long live the queen indeed. Olivia Colman maintained her perfect Golden Globes record on Sunday, taking home Best TV Drama Actress for “The Crown.” The Oscar winner previously won for her supporting turn on the AMC limited series “The Night Manager” three years ago and for her eventual Oscar-winning performance in “The Favourite” last year.
While many stars have gone 2 for 2 at the Globes, including last year’s TV drama actress winner Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”), it’s much more difficult to bat 1000 at three-plus nominations for acting. Martin Landau also went 3 for 3, prevailing for the second season of “Mission: Impossible” in 1968 and then on the film side for his supporting performances in “Tucker: The Man and His Dream” (1988) and “Ed Wood” (1994), the latter of which earned him an Oscar.

Neither Colman nor Landau have anything on Rosalind Russell though.

In the Broadway show “Gypsy” — a biopic about stripper Gypsy Rose Lee — there is a song titled “You Gotta Have a Gimmick.” When you are a Oscar nominee, however, you gotta have a narrative to complement your performance, something you can talk and brag about in interviews and on TV talk shows to prove that you gave your all to the art of cinema.
How many times did we read or hear that Leonardo DiCaprio suffered for his art during a grueling shoot for 2015’s “The Revenant” in which he played 19th-century frontiersman Hugh Glass who is left for dead after he is attacked by a grizzly bear? Not only did he chat endlessly about eating raw bison liver, he spent nine months in remote and frigid regions of Canada and Argentina making the film. As the actor told Yahoo Movies, “I can name 30 or 40 sequences that were some of...
