Lacey Chabert and Dustin Milligan-led “Hot Frosty” debuted as Netflix’s most-watched movie of the week.

The holiday flick brought in 16 million views from its Nov. 13 release through Sunday, Nov. 19, ranking as the top title on Netflix’s most-watched movie list for the week of Nov. 11. That viewership paled in comparison to the Mike Tyson-Jake Paul fight, though, which brought in a whopping 46.6 million views, ranking as the most-watched title of the week.

The 46.6 million views includes both the main Tyson-Paul fight, as well as the three other fights that transpired before they entered the ring — Katie Taylor vs. Amanda Serrano, Mario Barrios vs. Abel Ramos and Neeraj Goyat vs. Whindersson Nunes. The Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight was a knockout win for Netflix, racking up 46.6M views through Sunday night to easily make it the streamer’s most-watched program of the week.

Despite the technical issues, the fight was clearly a mega-event for Netflix, leagues above any other title on the platform that week in just a few days. It was No. 1 in 78 countries and in the Top 10 in all 91 countries that Netflix tracks.

Netflix also says, via data from TVision, that the fight is estimated to have had an average minute audience of 108M live viewers from opening to closing bell. Through Sunday, that’s up to 125M viewers. TVision uses 5,000 connected TV devices to measure and extrapolate that audience data. Total viewers is a tricky measurement in the streaming era, and it’s one that Netflix doesn’t often report, so it’s difficult to compare this data to anything else.

Ahead of its release in the UK this week, Amazon MGM’s Red One has a few mountains to climb.

Originally scheduled for a Christmas 2023 release, the $250m film was pushed back by a year, reportedly due to the Hollywood strikes. Then, in April, an incendiary The Wrap article alleged star Dwayne Johnson cost the studio $50m by arriving on set seven-to-eight hours late – charges the film’s director and producer have both strenuously denied. A trailer debut in June prompted the Guardian headline: “Will The Rock’s Red One be the worst Christmas movie ever?”. The film’s review embargo lifted at 5am the day of its UK release, coincidentally ensuring any questionable publicity was buried under the rather more pressing news circulating the morning of the 6th November.

Police detectives investigating Russell Brand regarding historic allegations of sex crimes have asked prosecutors to consider bringing criminal charges against the media personality, according to BBC.

The decision by law enforcement stems from a September 2023 investigative report by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4 Dispatches, which includes testimony from four women who accused the Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor of sexual assault, rape and emotional abuse across a seven-year period at the height of his fame in 2006-2013. One of the women, none of whom know each other and the majority of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity, was 16 at the time of the offense. While Brand has denied the allegations, the women said they felt compelled to speak up given the former presenter’s newfound platform as a right-wing evangelical influencer, who is currently selling a $240 “magical amulet” that wards off Wi-Fi and other “evil energies.”

Broadway’s pop-injected Romeo and Juliet revival opened at New York’s Circle in the Square Theatre earlier this month but took a detour last night to unravel on the stage at The Tonight Show With Stephen Colbert. Rachel Zegler brought her leading role as Juliet to the performance of “Man of the House” with assistance from Jack Antonoff, who wrote and produced music for the production.

Netflix customers will be able to add even more Universal movies to their queue with the studio’s live-action titles coming to the streamer in the U.S. starting with the 2027 slate.

Netflix and NBCUniversal’s Universal Filmed Entertainment Group announced a deal to renew their existing licensing deal for animated films from Illumination and DreamWorks Animation. Now, beginning with the 2027 slate, Netflix will have U.S. rights to live-action films from both Universal Pictures and Focus Features “no later than eight months” following their theatrical release.

After the Universal films’ initial premiere on NBCU’s Peacock, Netflix will have a 10-month window during which these films are available only on Netflix — before they return to Peacock. Netflix will also license rights to Universal’s full animation and live-action film slate for additional windows in subsequent years as well as rights to select titles from Universal’s film library, the companies said.

Rachel Zegler and Jack Antonoff have shared a new collaboration, “Man of the House,” from the new Broadway production Romeo + Juliet.

The latest revival of the classic Shakespeare tragedy stars Zegler as Juliet and Kit Connor as Romeo. And while it’s not an out-and-out musical, it does feature a few new songs from Antonoff. “Man of the House” is the first offering from the show and was co-written with singer-songwriter Ryan Beatty.

Universal animation The Wild Robot opened top of the UK-Ireland box office, with a £3.1m weekend.

Chris Sanders’ family feature, that has a voice cast including Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal and Kit Connor, played in 675 cinemas, taking a £4,591 site average. Including previews, the film has £3.3m. It is slightly down on the £3.6m start of another original Universal animation, Migration, from February this year.

Paramount animation Transformers One dethroned Joker: Folie À Deux at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, as the Warner Bros blockbuster suffered a significant 75% drop.

Transformers One opened to £1.6m in 583 sites at a £2,744 average – down on the stellar £8.7m of 2007’s Transformers and £8.3m of 2009’s Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, but still a decent opening for an animated feature.

Universal animation Despicable Me 4 rose back to the top of the UK-Ireland box office chart on its eighth weekend in cinemas, boosted by National Cinema Day on Saturday, August 31.

Despicable Me 4 fell a slim 12% across the weekend, with its Saturday takings up 23% compared to the previous Saturday.

Updated: While the calendar has clicked over to September, summer vibes are still being felt at the global and international box office. In yet another ascent, and on its 12th weekend of release, Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 has now grossed $1.666B+ globally, overtaking 2019’s The Lion King to become the 9th biggest movie ever at the worldwide box office. The cume through Sunday is an estimated $1,666.2M.

Summer has indeed been good to Disney and its brands, and vice-versa. Between Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, Dis boasts the two biggest movies of the year and the only billion-dollar grossers so far. Meanwhile, 20th Century’s Alien: Romulus is chomping its way to $300M global.

Sony/Wayfarer’s It Ends with Us is headed towards the same milestone, and Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4 has gruved past the $900M global mark.

Despicable Me 4 is now available on Digital HD and to mark the occasion, we were able to catch up with director Chris Renaud to talk about the latest blockbuster entry in Illumination's fan-favorite animated franchise.

The fourth installment sees Gru square off against a new nemesis named Maxime Le Mal, and in our extensive conversation, we talk about the reunion of former Anchorman co-stars Steve Carell and Will Ferrell, as well as a number of other things including the introduction of the Mega Minions, the franchise's lasting power, the possibility of aging up characters, and a whole lot more.

Renaud's past credits include Despicable Me, Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, Despicable Me 2, The Secret Life of Pets, and The Secret Life of Pets 2. He also served as a producer on Minions, Despicable Me 3, The Grinch, and Minions: The Rise of Gru.

Updated: Another busy weekend at the international box office, with strong holds across the board, and a major new milestone for Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2. Already the highest grossing animated film of all time, globally and overseas, the sequel has become the first animated movie ever to cross the $1B international box office threshold, now nearing $1.003B. Overall, it is one of only 12 films ever to surpass that milestone. More on that phenom below.

Leading all play overseas was 20th Century Studios/Disney’s Alien: Romulus which added $41.6M overseas in the sophomore session (-35%), and raised its offshore cume to $152.8M. Globally, the total is now $225.4M through Sunday.

Much as it did last frame, China continues to overperform on the Fede Alvarez-directed installment, sticking No. 1 and now at a strong $73.3M. It is the second-biggest Hollywood movie in China this year, behind Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Because of its current dominance in the world of kiddie entertainment, it may take a moment's reflection to recall that Chris Renaud's and Pierre Coffin's 2010 animated film "Despicable Me" once felt the slightest bit subversive. The main character of "Despicable Me" was the Eastern European supervillain Gru (Steve Carell) who aimed to commit visible acts of spiteful villainy. His latest plan was to steal the moon out of the sky, merely for the infamy it would garner him. 

"Despicable Me" takes place in a world that's overrun by villains, thieves, and superpowered monster people, but is seemingly absent of heroes. It won't be until later sequels that a crime-fighting Mi-6-type organization would come into play. Later still, Gru would renounce his villainy and become a dippy suburban dad to a trio of precocious girls. In "Despicable Me 4," Gru also has a wife and an infant son.

'Despicable Me' director Chris Renaud has ruled out a live-action Minions movie.The 57-year-old filmmaker and voice actor - who also voiced the Minions in the blockbuster Illumination franchise - insists the films should stay in the animated world.Asked if it's something he'd want to do, he told Film Hounds magazine: “God, I hope not. That’s my answer.“I mean if there were conversations like that, I haven’t been privy to them. But for me, what defines the world is that it is animated, and it allows us to get away with what we get away with. Like locking a minion in the vending machine, or you know, blowing up Gru (Steve Carell) when he attacks Vector (Jason Segel). Despicable Me director Chris Renaud has zero plans for a live-action Minions movie, and he hopes to keep it that way.

The filmmaker was recently asked in an interview with Film Hounds magazine if he was ever interested in seeing the Minions make the jump from animation to live-action, given Disney’s success with it.

Sony’s It Ends With Us, starring Blake Lively, wooed audiences at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office with a huge £4.5m, taking top spot and ending the two-week run in first of Deadpool & Wolverine.

The romantic drama based on Colleen Hoover’s novel of the same name took an excellent £7,087 location average from 630 sites.

Sunday Update: Deadpool & Wolverine continues to govern the global box office, now with an estimated $824.1M through Sunday. The breakdown here is $395.6M domestic and $428.5M at the international box office. On a worldwide basis, D&w has already topped the cumes of Deadpool ($783M) and Deadpool 2 ($786M).

It is the No. 3 R-rated movie of all time, and the 2nd highest global studio release of 2024 to date. Falling in behind Inside Out 2, this has helped push The Walt Disney Studios to become the first studio to cross $3B globally this year (the estimated cume through Sunday is $3.109B).

D&W saw a great 41% dip in the sophomore session overseas (with strong holds in several areas) and remains the No. 1 non-local movie in all international markets.

Sunday Update: Marvel/Disney’s Deadpool & Wolverine has shredded expectations, opening to $438.3M worldwide. The international box office portion is $233.3M with domestic at $205M.

As Anthony has reported, this is the biggest R-rated opening of all time domestically; it’s also tops globally, surpassing Deadpool ($264M in like-for-like markets excluding China at current rates), as well as internationally, overtaking Joker ($147M) on a like-for-like basis at current rates. Further, this is the biggest worldwide and international opening of the year, and tops since Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022.

The MCU has now surpassed $30B worldwide ($30.3B).

Overseas, where all markets opened, BFFs Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman front the No. 1 non-local movie everywhere. The start (excluding China where the previous films did not release) is 56% ahead of Deadpool and 50% above Deadpool 2. D&w is also 37% ahead of Joker.

Despicable Me 4 withstood the Twisters whirlwind at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, as the Universal animation held top spot for a second successive weekend.

Despicable Me 4 added £4.9m – a 49% drop on its opening session, which brought it to £17.4m from two weekends in play. The film took a strong £2.3m on Saturday alone.

Lee Isaac Chung’s Twisters is whipping up huge winds at the box office, with forecasters predicting a far better than expected domestic opening of $80.5 million in North America. That’s even up from Saturday’s already massive estimate of $74.6 million.

The record-breaking movie, playing in 4,151 theaters, easily boasts the top domestic opening ever for a natural disaster film, not adjusted for inflation. (The current crown holder is Roland Emmerich’s The Day After Tomorrow, which bowed to $68.44 million in 2004.) It’s also the third biggest start of the year to date behind Inside Out 2 ($154.2 million) and Dune: Part Two ($82.5 million) after edging out Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($80 million).

The turnout for Twisters cements the rising star status of Hollywood’s man-of-the-moment Glen Powell, along with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Anthony Ramos (the trio lead the ensemble cast). It’s also a notable win for Chung, the acclaimed filmmaker of indie hit Minari.

People just love the Minions. With "Despicable Me 4" continuing to tear it up at the global box office, the franchise has crossed a major milestone, making a bit of history in the process. Illumination's signature series of films has now collectively crossed the $5 billion mark worldwide, making it the first animated franchise in history to do so. Updated: Animation domination continues at the global and international box office with Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 leading the pack this frame, and Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 still positively on fire after five sessions. At the same time, we’re seeing encouraging numbers for all major titles in release. And that’s a great thing; yes, there is reason to be positive.

Already this week, Inside Out 2 became Pixar’s highest grossing movie ever globally, and the Despicable Me/Minions franchise became the first animated franchise to reach $5B global. Neither of the current films in release are close to done. To wit: DM4 still has Japan, Korea and Italy on deck.

Minions 3‘s Release Date Has Been Announced

The Minions franchise has cemented itself as a strong brand which began as part of the Despicable Me series. Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures introduced the Minions in 2010’s Despicable Me which follows Steve Carell‘s Gru story who adopts three orphaned girls, which turns him into a loving father.

The movie introduced the yellow creatures as Gru’s loyal henchmen, whose comedic charms have captivated audiences’ attention.

Illumination and Universal have announced that Minions 3 is on the way and will arrive in June of 2027. The film will be directed by regular Despicable Me and Minions helmer Pierre Coffin and continue the successful franchise that has earned almost $5bn to date.

As shared by The Hollywood Reporter, Minions 3 will be written by Brian Lynch, who wrote film in the series as well as The Secret Life Of Pets, and will be produced by Chris Meldandri and Bill Ryan.

The studio announced the date just over a week after Despicable Me 4 – the latest entry in the franchise that spawned the Minions spin-offs – opened top in North America on $122.6m over the five-day July Fourth holiday weekend.

The Minions franchise itself has grossed just over $2.1bn worldwide and combines with the Despicable Me series for more than $5bn in ticket sales.
