Over the course of 10 days, Ryan Murphy released four new shows — “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez” and “Grotesquerie” at FX, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” at Netflix and “Doctor Odyssey” at ABC — and premiered new seasons of returning hits “9-1-1: Lone Star” at Fox and “9-1-1” at ABC.
“Six shows in a month is a lot, but everybody in my company worked really, really hard, and miraculously, they all worked,” Murphy told Variety during a conversation on Oct. 1. “They all launched at No. 1 and individually, they’re all doing really, really well.”
Everything coming out at once “wasn’t really planned that way,” Murphy said, but happened as part of his new deal at Disney, which he’s a year and a half into.
“It was a combination of the writers strike and my new deal. They asked me, when we finally realized, six things are coming out over the course of 10 days,...

Ethan Hawke and Sterlin Harjo’s FX drama pilot has been ordered to series at FX, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.
The pilot was originally commissioned in February under the title “The Sensitive Kind” with Hawke in the lead role. Exact plot details are being kept under wraps aside from the fact it is described as a “Tulsa noir about a guy (Hawke) who knows too much.”
FX declined to comment.
The pilot was filmed in Oklahoma back in April and May. Keith David, Siena East, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Tim Blake Nelson, Scott Shepherd, Tracy Letts, Kyle Maclachlan, and Macon Blair all starred opposite Hawke in the pilot, with additional cast including Killer Mike, Kaniehtiio Horne, Cody Lightning, Michael Hitchcock, and Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
Harjo created the series and serves as executive producer, while he also directed the pilot. Hawke will executive produce in addition to starring, with Garrett Basch executive producing as well.

Ryan Murphy doesn’t do things by half.
This is a man who launched and brought back six television shows over the last two weeks including ABC’s Joshua Jackson-fronted Doctor Odyssey, FX’s Grotesquerie featuring Niecy Nash and Travis Kelce, and Netflix’s Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story; has another launching later this month in FX’s American Horror Stories; and is heading straight into a run that includes All’s Fair, starring the likes of Kim Kardashian and Glenn Close, reuniting with Evan Peters in FX sci-fi series The Beauty and the first iteration of American Love Story about John F. Kennedy Jr.
The data shows that such an “intense” workload is paying off.
Netflix revealed earlier Tuesday that Monsters: The Lyle & Erik Menendez Story scored 19.5 million views in its first full week on the service, where it is No. 1, and totaling nearly 32M views since it launched.

Evan Peters and Ryan Murphy are set to reunite for The Beauty, a new TV series for FX Networks.
Ryan Murphy is arguably TV’s busiest producer right now. The Glee co-creator has just released another controversial entry into his Monster franchise, with a season that focuses on the Menendez brothers.
Variety reports that Murphy has already set up his next project and it’s going to be a reunion. Murphy is heading back to the network FX with The Beauty, a series based on Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley’s Image Comics series of the same name.
The series, which FX has ordered 11 episodes of, will star Murphy’s longtime collaborator Evan Peters. Anthony Ramos, Ashton Kutcher and Jeremy Pope will also star and all will act as executive producers as well. Matthew Hodgson is serving as a co-creator alongside Murphy.

Right now, two of the hottest tickets in Hollywood are video game and comic book adaptations. Everyone wants a piece, whether it’s The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, The Umbrella Academy, or Watchmen. The fact remains that copious amounts of stories are ripe for adaptations, and Ryan Murphy‘s got his sights on Image Comics’ The Beauty, created by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley. FX is giving Ryan Murphy’s The Beauty a series order, with Evan Peters, Anthony Ramos, Ashton Kutcher, and Jeremy Pope attached to star.
Murphy and Matt Hodgson co-created, wrote, and executive-produced the 11-episode season, which begins production this fall. Peters, Ramos, and Pope executive produced it. While details about the series remain a mystery, the official synopsis for The Beauty Vol. 1 reads:
“Imagine a sexually transmitted disease that makes those infected better looking… a disease people want. That disease is real, and it’s called the Beauty.

FX will be home to yet another series from Ryan Murphy.
The Disney-owned outlet has picked up a drama titled The Beauty from the prolific Murphy’s eponymous production company and 20th Television, where Murphy is based. The series, which will star Evan Peters, Ashton Kutcher, Anthony Ramos and Jeremy Pope, is based on a 2016 Image Comics title of the same title. Murphy and Matthew Hodgson (American Sports Story, 911) are credited as co-creators.
Per usual with Murphy productions, story details are being kept quiet. The graphic novel on which the series is based, by Jeremy Haun and Jason A. Hurley, is set in a world where a sexually transmitted disease spreads across the world — largely because it makes people more physically attractive. Two detectives, however, stumble on a conspiracy surrounding the disease’s origins.

Exclusive: Fresh off the TIFF premiere of their new documentary Vice Is Broke, Get Out producer QC Entertainment has enlisted Gabrielle Union (Riff Raff) to star in The Casket Girls, a new horror film to be directed by Justin Dyck (Anything for Jackson), which they will produce and fully finance.
Written by Thomas Lennon & Robert Ben Garant (Night at the Museum), with revisions by Keith Cooper (Anything for Jackson) & Dyck, The Casket Girls is inspired by the true story of a group of young women sent from France to New Orleans to become brides to French colonists in the early 1700s. They arrived with small chests, or “caskets” of their belongings, hence the name given by locals. According to legend, upon the girls’ arrival, the homicide rate in New Orleans rose dramatically, with stories of men drained of their blood. “Deadpool and Wolverine” is now playing in theaters, and although Hugh Jackman probably won’t receive any major awards nominations for his anticipated return as his comic book character, he has been nominated for an Oscar as well as other major trophies throughout his career. Let’s look back at his many awards races.
After his breakthrough performance as Wolverine in the first “X-Men” film, Jackman spent most of the 2000s appearing in summer action blockbusters like “Swordfish” and “Van Helsing” as well as “X-Men” sequels and a prequel. He was never a serious awards contender for the 2001 romantic comedy “Kate & Leopold,” but he did receive his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The other nominees were Ewan McGregor for “Moulin Rouge!,” John Cameron Mitchell for “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” Billy Bob Thornton for “Bandits” and Gene Hackman for “The Royal Tenenbaums,...

Hulu’s acclaimed new limited series “We Were the Lucky Ones” is led by Logan Lerman. who give the best performance of his career. It’s a difficult watch but creator Erica Lipez has crafted a gripping, vital narrative with Lerman at the center of the show. Ask any independent producer and they’ll tell you: making movies is a piece of cake. Scouring the Earth for viable, quality material? Wrangling, gracefully, volatile talent egos? Raising stupid amounts of capital and wearily securing every stray element of physical production? Delegating responsibility, absorbing crew complaints and mallet-flattening nonstop whack-a-mole near-disasters? Shrewdly navigating distribution in a broken marketplace and finally—if you’re very lucky!—appropriately proportioning revenue shares under perpetual threat of litigation for the duration of your fleeting mortal existence? Like we said. Easy.
Just kidding. This is some of the hardest goddamn shit you’ll ever try to do. But for 30 years Film Independent has been doing all it can to support filmmakers across every discipline and career level. In theory, of course, producers are everyone else’s best resource—the adult in the room solving problems and providing steady leadership. But who watches the watchmen produces the producers?...

Leo Woodall first came to prominence when he featured in season two of HBO’s “The White Lotus.” In that series, he played the, uh, “nephew” of Tom Hollander‘s character and made quite a splash in the role. Now, Woodall has gone from supporting player to leading man with Netflix’s new miniseries, “One Day.”
Adapted from David Nicholl‘s 2009 book of the same name (and the second adaptation overall after the much-maligned 2011 Anne Hathaway movie), “One Day” follows Woodall and “This is Going to Hurt” star Ambika Mod as two students (Dexter and Emma) who meet on graduation night. That chance meeting sparks an entwined relationship that encompasses friendship and lovers across a 20-year period as they continually meet on various July 15ths.
The result is a swooning, epic romance that hinges on the charisma of its two leads. Thankfully, both Woodall and Mod are up to the task.

Austin Butler is clearing the air about the time he referred to his former longtime girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens as a “friend,” which many people felt minimized their nine-year-long relationship.
During The Hollywood Reporter’s 2023 Actor Roundtable — which featured last year’s awards season’s leading men including Butler, Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Jeremy Pope, Ke Huy Quan and Adam Sandler — the Elvis actor was asked if he always wanted to play the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. He responded with an anecdote, saying his “friend” had told him he should do it one day.
“The month before I heard that Baz [Luhrmann] was making the movie, I was going to look at Christmas lights with a friend, and there was an Elvis Christmas song on the radio, and I was singing along, and my friend looked over at me and goes, ‘You’ve got to play Elvis,'” he recalled. “I said,...

Tarell Alvin McCraney does not shy away from the toughest — and what he calls “provocative” — question facing theater-makers today: Who’s going to the theater to help them stay afloat?
Theater as an art form has stood the test of time — but times have rarely been as existentially daunting for the business as they are today. The last year has seen programming suspensions, layoffs and rounds of emergency fundraising at such rock-steady institutions as the Public Theater in New York City, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Los Angeles’ own Mark Taper Forum. Per a July report from American Theatre, 35 regional theaters and counting have closed since March 2020.
And so it’s in the midst of historic, industry-wide downturns since Covid that McCraney — the Oscar-winning screenwriter (and original playwright) of Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” and creator of OWN’s “David Makes Man” — took the reins as artistic director for Geffen Playhouse in...

The quest for improved working conditions in Hollywood has mobilized across the pond and into another industry, as a group of U.K. stylists recently announced the formation of the Celebrity Stylists Union, a branch of Bectu, the Broadcasting, Entertainment, Communications and Theatre Union in Europe. In line with a wave of labor activity this year — and as the dual writers and actors strikes continue in Hollywood — the stylists union seeks to regulate their pay structure with a goal to establish rate cards and best practices to account for late hours, last-minute requests, prep work and upfront costs related to pulling looks, tailoring items, shipping clothes and travel for which many say they aren’t compensated.

Exclusive: Compelling Pictures is coming on to produce and finance the high-concept psychological horror thriller The Blur, written and being directed by emerging director Joe Miale. Denis O’Sullivan and Jeff Kalligheri are producing for Compelling, alongside Scott Carr and Josh Crook. Carr brought the project to Compelling back in 2020 as a pitch and Miale wrote the script.
The film follows a visually-impaired family tormented by a ghost only seen by those who have severe myopia. It introduces a villain named Smudge to the horror pantheon, and will use innovative visual techniques–largely in-camera–to bring the terrifying character to life. Producers cited a 2021 study by the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness estimated that 43 million people worldwide are considered legally blind, while 295 million people worldwide live with moderate-to-severe visual impairment. And also noted the World Health Organization has estimated that approximately 2.2 billion people worldwide have some level of near or distance vision impairment.

Exclusive: While still in post with Compelling Pictures on the Warhol-Basquiat film The Collaboration, based on the play he directed in both its debut London run and its Broadway transfer, Kwame Kwei-Armah has closed a deal to direct Mission Hill, a Boston-set crime thriller that will mark a reteam with the producer-financier.
Based on an original screenplay by Michael McGrale (The Following), developed by Compelling, Mission Hill is based on a real-life homicide case that brought Boston to its knees in 1989. It follows an up-and-coming police officer and a seasoned detective racing against time to bring a suspect in before the city implodes over racial tensions.
Compelling Pictures will finance and produce the film which is aiming for a late 2023 start date, pending the ongoing WGA strike and potential other labor actions from SAG-AFTRA and the DGA.
Producing alongside Compelling is Peter Craig — who’s coming off his first Oscar nomination for his contributions to the screenplay of Top Gun: Maverick — as well as Jay Giannone. Exec producers are Kwei-Armah and McGrale, Steven Garcia for Compelling, Max Goldfarb for Redefine Entertainment, Marina Cappi for Marina Studios Productions, Ori Allon and Sal Monaco for White Lodge Productions, Tanner Beard, Lexie Beard, Janice Beard, Dennis Casali and Joshua Kushner. Two-time Emmy nominee Kim Coleman (Lovecraft Country) is handling the film’s casting.
“I’m overjoyed to be working with Compelling Pictures again on this amazing project,” said Kwei-Armah. “I couldn’t put it down when I began to read it. Overjoyed.”
“Mission Hill is a passion project for Jeff, Peter, and myself. Having just had the great pleasure of working with Kwame, we couldn’t be more excited to help bring his vision to life,” stated Compelling Pictures principal Denis O’Sullivan. “It all began with Mike’s riveting script, which has been waiting patiently since 2021 for a great director to take the reins. We’re honored to tell this story of a city that has been seen in movies we love, but rarely from this perspective, and we can’t wait for a global audience to experience this epic, propulsive ride.”
Added producer Craig, “Mike Mcgrale’s script is among the best I’ve ever read – and I’m so happy to see it now in the hands of a talented director like Kwame.”
Kwei-Armah teamed with actors Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope on both the stage and screen versions of the Anthony McCarten-penned The Collaboration, which revolves around the relationship between the iconic artists Warhol and Basquiat, starting in the summer of 1984. Otherwise known for stage productions like The Visitor and One Love: The Bob Marley Musical, he also notably co-wrote and exec produced the veteran thriller Breaking starring John Boyega, which world premiered at Sundance and was released in theaters by Bleecker Street.
Headed by O’Sullivan (Bohemian Rhapsody) and and Jeff Kalligheri (I Wanna Dance with Somebody), Compelling Pictures most recently released the McCarten-scripted Whitney Houston biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody, starring BAFTA winner Naomi Ackie, which Sony Pictures took worldwide this past Christmas. Helmed by Kasi Lemmons, the film currently streaming on Netflix landed the #1 spot on the U.S. film chart in its first two weeks on the platform.
Kwei-Armah is repped by CAA, United Agents in the UK, Redefine and attorney Linda Lichter; McGrale by APA, Heroes and Villains, and attorney Will Jacobson; Craig by CAA and Grandview; and Compelling by Evan Krauss of Eisner Llp.

Monday night’s Met Gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art was a bonafide lovefest for Karl Lagerfeld, whose work is showcased in the Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, opening Friday.
With some Met Gala themes, the sartorial choices can be a tad all over the place, and decidedly rooted in causing a social-media frenzy. While the latter was certainly true with several looks (hello, Jared Leto), the overall vibe Monday evening was rooted in paying tribute not only to the many, many designs Lagerfeld produced during his six-decade career but also to the elements that defined the man himself and the design codes he happily embraced within the iconic houses he famously oversaw.
Chanel, the gala’s primary sponsor, was the clear winner in that equation, not only in the number of stars dressed by the legendary French house — which included Nicole Kidman,...
