In Plato’s allegory of the cave, a group of people find themselves bound to the walls of a subterranean hangout. Ahead of them they see flickering shadows, caused by the distant fires of the sunlit world, but all else, for them, is darkness. Are these shadows reality, or just a pale facsimile? That was the question of two millennia ago: now it’s Channel 4’s turn to use darkness as an allegory for reality (or reality TV), with Scared in the Dark, a new five-part celebrity reality show told, not by Plato, but by Danny Dyer.
Scared of the Dark follows a group of eight celebrities – boxers Chris Eubank and Nicola Adams, singer Max George, Love Islander Chloe Burrows, ubiquitous TV person Scarlett Moffatt, actor Donna Preston, stand-up Chris McCausland and, well, Gazza – as they spend a week or so in the pitch black. “Located deep within a 146,000 sq ft hangar,...

Former England footballer Paul “Gazza” Gascoigne has become the first ever winner of experimental Channel 4 reality show Scared of the Dark.
Gascoigne came out on top over seven other celebrities, after spending 180 hours in complete darkness – living, eating, sleeping and completing challenges.
The series, billed as a “world first”, came to a close on Thursday (20 April) with the winner announced by host Danny Dyer.
Following his win, Gascoigne said he had been “nervous” to take part but said the experience had made him “a better person”.
“People always question my mental strength but my success on this series proves that I am strong,” he said.
“I was nervous going in there but having gotten this far on the series made me the happiest man around.
“I’m so happy. It’s unbelievable. I’ve got my smile back. I’m a better person.”

I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! is returning for its first-ever All-Stars series, with a host of fan-favourite contestants preparing to go back to the jungle.
Filmed last year, the all-stars series will see the former campmates jetting off to South Africa – rather than the usual Australian location – for a series that promises to be “even bigger and tougher” than ever.
Among the initial line-up of returning contestants is Carol Vorderman, the former Countdown co-host and TV personality.
The 62-year-old first appeared on the 16th series of I’m a Celebrity in 2016 alongside Scarlett Moffatt and Joel Dommett. She came in eighth place.
Starting off her career on Countdown in 1982, Vorderman went on to work as a presenter on other shows and as a newspaper columnist.

Dish, the hit podcast hosted by Nick Grimshaw and Angela Hartnett, will be getting extra social for the festive season as the presenting duo escape the studio and cosy up at Grimmy’s own home, where some special guests have been invited round for Christmas food, drink and laughs.
In a series of episodes, Hugh Bonneville, Dermot O’Leary and Alison Hammond, and Annie Mac will all settle down for a fireside chat, while Michelin star chef Angela Hartnett cooks and Grimshaw serves up the drinks. The hosts’ warm reception and sense of humour make Dish the most hospitable and social show on the planet.
Dish takes a pioneering approach to turning podcasts into a social event: it’s recorded like a podcast, shot for Instagram and edited for TikTok. As a result, it’s had 20 weeks at number one on Apple’s food podcast chart and is regularly in the top 20 Apple shows.

Lea Michele has addressed the online joke that she’s illiterate, calling it “sad”.
In 2017, the One More Thing podcast theorised that the Glee star couldn’t read or write because her early years as a childhood performer left little time for her to learn.
A year later, the rumour reemerged, drawing Michele’s attention. At the time, she shut down the rumours lightheartedly with a tweet, saying: “Loved Reading this tweet and wanted to Write you back. Literally laughing out loud at all this love you!!!”
Now, with the recent announcement that the 36-year-old actor would be taking over the lead role of Fanny Brice on Broadway’s Funny Girl, the rumour has once again resurfaced.
While Michele had seemingly laughed off the joke before, she recently appears to have taken a different tone.

Scarlett Moffatt has shared an emotional video after a stranger followed her, having seen her location on social media.
The presenter and former Gogglebox star posted a video late on Wednesday (31 August) telling followers about how, after posting about travelling to London, she was approached by a man she didn’t know.
Moffatt began the clip by thanking rail staff members named Danny and Neil for their help during the event.
“I’m doing this so that people realise the importance of using social media and not always posting where you are,” a visibly shaken Moffatt said into the camera.
“I stupidly, naively, posted an Instagram saying, ‘Off to London on the train,’ and when I got into King's Cross station, there was a guy there.
“Because Danny and Neil were there, I stayed calm, but this guy came at me and was saying ‘Scarlett, I've been waiting for you,...

The BBC Factual department has unveiled a vast slate including a natural history series following four animal families over four years and shows commemorating the 40th anniversaries of the Falklands War and AIDS crisis.
At an event yesterday in London, Fiona Campbell, Acting Head of Factual, Arts and Classical Music, unveiled Kingdom, which will follow leopards, hyenas, wild dogs and lions and was described as “one of the most ambitious projects ever undertaken” by the BBC Studios Natural History Unit (Nhu).
Filmed in Zambia, the show is a co-production with BBC America and is similar in scope to 2019’s Dynasties, which followed five royal families of the animal kingdom.
“With more time in the field than any previous Nhu production, never has a BBC landmark followed a group of characters so intensely over such a long period or spent so much time embedded in a single habitat,” said the BBC.

U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 has greenlit new factual entertainment format “The British Tribe Next Door,” which will see a British family spend four weeks with a remote tribe in Namibia.
The twist in this format is that, unlike most adventurers, the participants don’t say goodbye to the comforts of their home — instead, they take them with them.
The family will have running water, electricity, and all their possessions around them, from hair-straighteners to frozen ready-made meals and a TV.
The hourlong series, consisting of four episodes, is produced by Voltage TV and Motion Content Group for Channel 4. Scarlett Moffatt and her family, who feature in the C4 series “Gogglebox,” are the British family traveling to Namibia.
The community they will be joining is a small village of semi-nomadic Himba cattle-herders, who live largely traditional lives and who will be given a look at sedentary, high-tech, consumerist Western lifestyles.

The revived Crystal Maze is a winner, as its second Stand Up To Cancer celebrity special proves…
“I love The Crystal Maze!” said Joey Essex, once he’d worked out what one was and that he was in it. “Haven’t we revitalised the format?!” agreed Richard Ayoade enthusiastically, sadly putting Joey right back in the lap of confusion.

Ayoade and Essex, two very different kinds of men. Watching them try to converse can’t be unlike watching an owl try to mate with a suitcase. Having seen it now though, I just want more. Quick, someone commission a show in which the pair of them team up to fight crime or catch cowboy roofers or conduct a public vote for the nation’s best Center Parcs. Whatever it is, I know I wouldn’t be able to look away.
