John Lithgow, Geoffrey Rush and Kristine Froseth won top acting awards at Spain’s prominent Sitges Fantasy Film Festival, which wrapped its 57th edition on Oct. 13.
Making a sweep of the fest with three awards was Austrian Best International Feature Oscar entry “The Devil’s Bath” by Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala. Drawn from historical facts, the Austrian-German co-production is described by Variety critic Jessica Kiang as a “story so pitilessly bleak you may want to look away; the filmmaking craft is so compelling that you can’t.” The historical horror drama, which vied for the Berlinale Golden Bear in February, follows Agnes, a depressed newlywed, who instead of committing suicide, considered taboo by her Christian community, commits a crime that would lead to her execution. The “suicide by proxy” practice was said to be common in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries in German-speaking Central Europe and Scandinavia.

It’s safe to rank South Korean horror fans high atop the list of genre supporters the world over, mainly as the past several decades have produced blockbusters the likes of 2010’s “I Saw the Devil,” 2016’s “The Wailing” and even the work of Bong Joon-ho, Oscar-winning director of “Parasite,” with the widely acclaimed 2006 entry “The Host.” With Korean spirituality long held in high regard and scripture overflowing with stories of forces at work beyond the boundaries of humankind, writer/director Jang Jae-hyun has now brought “Exhuma” to the table, a film taking the kitchen sink approach when it comes to 134 minutes of content and a cast more than willing to try and sift through the murk to help it make sense.

Some countries love comedy, others love Disney animation, and in South Korea, audiences have a particular weakness for the horror genre. That's why the country's highest grossing movie of the year so far is director Jang Jae-Hyun's horror Exhuma.
It has everything you need: shamans with ritual tattoos on their skin, Oldboy star Choi Min-sik, bloody tears and ripped out guts. Basically, everything we love about Asian horror movies.
What Is Exhuma About?
When the newborn of a wealthy Korean family in Los Angeles falls ill with a mysterious disease, the head of the family brings a shaman and her assistant from Seoul. The shaman immediately identifies the problem: a hereditary curse whose roots go back to the historical homeland, and more specifically to the grave of the client's grandfather, which is strangely located in a remote rural area on top of a mountain.

Within the last decade, the Korean horror scene has been flooded with movies revolving around the country’s practice of shamanism, known as Mugyo, as there are strong historical roots embedded within the polytheistic belief. Having its origins in prehistory, Korean shamanism has accepted different disciplines and religions over time, being a fluid amalgamation of diverse belief systems, which is a testament to the country’s rich cultural legacy. Along with the art of divination and geomancy known as Pungsu-Jiri, aka Korean Feng-Shui, shamanism is Korea’s unofficial indigenous religion. Jang Jae-Hyun’s Exhuma is the latest South Korean horror venture that examines the influence of both of these disciplines in regards to the country’s sordid past. Imperial Japan’s colonizing history is alluded to in Exhuma. As we see while the film draws upon mythological iconographies, the narrative presents Japanese folklore ad a form of adversary presence.

Exhuma almost feels like watching two movies; one of them is grounded horror, which almost works like an investigative thriller. The other one is where our four heroes—shaman Hwa-Rim, her prodigy Bong Gil, geomancer cum feng-shui expert Sang-deok, and mortician Young-geun—try to contain the samurai demon that often turns into a vicious fireball. Jang Jae-hyun’s latest work relies a lot on both history and mythology, and unless you’re well-versed in the basics of Japan’s occupation of Korea as well as the five elements of Taoism, you might find yourself lost at sea initially. However, Exhuma still works as a satisfying horror experience, albeit a bit uneven if we go by the tone. At times it feels a bit information dense, but the stellar cast led by the legendary Choi Min-sik (who plays Sang-deok) pretty much makes up for it. In this article, we’re going...

2024 is half over and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 10 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.

South Korea’s current box office champion multiple weeks in a row, Exhuma, offers an unexpected and entertaining take on folk horror. While dense in lore and spiritual worldbuilding, the latest horror offering from writer/director Jae-hyun Jang (Svaha: The Sixth Finger, The Priests) balances its grim, sometimes bloody folkloric terror with levity and heart. Anchored by four “ghostbusters” of sorts, with charismatic actors behind them, the intricately woven Exhuma delivers one of the year’s biggest surprises in horror so far.
Exhuma hits the ground running with an introduction to Shaman Hwa-rim (Kim Go-eun) and her close protégé Bong-gil, arriving on a flight to Los Angeles. They have been summoned by the ultra-rich Park Ji-yong (Kim Jae-cheol) for a well-paying gig helping him rid his infant son of a supernatural curse. Hwa-rim traces the curse back to South Korea, where they enlist colleague and geomancer Sang-deok and mortician Young-geun...
