Exclusive: Nia Long is set to star in Dreams of the Moon, a film that’s inspired by a true story from Inner City Films. Long will also serve as an executive producer on the project, which is being directed by Alfons Adetuyi (Love Jacked). In addition, Eden Duncan-Smith, from the Netflix and Spike Lee-produced film See You Yesterday, will also star.
Set in 1971 against the backdrop of the secret Nasa Apollo 16 training mission, the indie tells the story of an African-American teenage girl who dreams of becoming an astronaut in her small mining town.
Denis Foon penned the screenplay. Inner City Films and Spier Films are producing the pic, which is slated to begin shooting this April in South Africa. This will mark the second collaboration between the two companies, which previously teamed on romantic comedy Love Jacked, starring Amber Stevens West, Shamier Anderson, Mike Epps, and David Keith.

Cinema and social commentary collide in entertaining and thought-provoking fashion in “See You Yesterday,” a mix of pop culture and true crime that feels tailor-made for a millennial Netflix audience. Stefon Bristol’s feature debut follows two African American Brooklyn teens as they try to use homemade time machines to undo a fatal police shooting — leading to an unforeseen set of calamitous new problems. With Eden Duncan-Smith’s stellar lead performance overshadowing some tonal uneasiness, the film should prove an appealing at-home option when it arrives on the streaming platform May 17.
Producer Spike Lee helped NYU student Bristol expand his short thesis film into full-length drama with a dynamic, lived-in depiction of East Flatbush that recalls Lee’s “Do the Right Thing.” That’s far from the only movie touchstone in “See You Yesterday,” as Bristol’s story begins with a cameo from “Back to the Future” star Michael J. Stefon Bristol’s debut feature “See You Yesterday,” which has Spike Lee as one of its producers, revolves around the ingenuity of two 16-year-old friends, Claudette and Sebastian (Dante Crichlow), who are working on a homemade time machine in Sebastian’s garage. The effects in this movie are as charmingly lo-fi as the backpack modules that they wear to travel back in time for 10-minute intervals.
“See You Yesterday” nods to some of its 1980s forebears by having Michael J. Fox turn up as one of their teachers at the Bronx High School of Science. Claudette is reading Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time” in his class, while Fox has his nose buried in Octavia Butler’s “Kindred,” a popular time travel novel from 1979. When Claudette tells Fox’s Mr. Lockhart about her time-travel backpack project, which she hopes will get her into MIT, Bristol keeps his camera...

Most movies involving teens and time travel would likely find the young characters going back in time to win the lottery or show off for their other, dumber classmates, but See You Yesterday is changing things up with a timely take on the formula. Netflix has released the new trailer for the time travel film from producer Spike Lee, which finds C.J. (Eden Duncan-Smith) and her friend Sebastian (Danté…...

Annie Review 1 of 5

Transformers
Lorem ipsum 1 of 5
When the first trailer for Sony’s remake of Annie hit the web, my gut response was to involuntarily cringe in my seat. The brightly colored preview hit every wrong note for me, promising a traditional take on the play peppered with kid-friendly (read: unsubtle and forced) jokes and heavily auto-tuned musical numbers. So, admittedly, it wasn’t with great enthusiasm that I finally sat down to watch the final product.
Don’t get me wrong – I’m not someone who usually recoils from song-and-dance productions, or someone who haughtily looks down upon those movies that try their damnedest to leave you tapping your toes with a big, stupid grin on your face. What I am, however, is someone who’ll defend until my dying breath the importance of being earnest. And that is one trait that this new Annie lacks almost entirely.

Sia has contributed a new version of "You're Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile" to the forthcoming film redux of "Annie" and, boy, is it bonkers. It's mastered to the max, it's got new, original fillings (just like your teeth!), it's got Sia still working out whatever accent Sia does, and it's trashy as hell. I kind of love it. If the film is anything like the accompanying music video to this "Never Fully Dressed," then prepare for divine and obnoxious child actors forcing your mouth into a twisted dumb grin for its duration. A patent corporate smarm will act as a thin layer of wax on the "Annie" of old and transition it into a viral video-binging, non-stop comic, New York-worshipping, anti-cynical pill to swallow. And maybe it's best this way, because I am going to watch this movie so hard. One reason is because "Annie" was one of...
