Jessica Gunning just won the Emmy Award for her breakout role on Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer.” And now she’d better make some room on her awards mantel, because Gold Derby predicts she will prevail at the upcoming Golden Globes, too. (Maybe she will sing her speech this time?)
The English actress leads our 2025 Golden Globe predictions for Best TV Supporting Actress, a catch-all category that combines performances from dramas, comedies, limited series and made-for-television movies. Gunning inhabits the character of Martha Scott, a former lawyer who begins stalking comedian/bartender Donny Dunn (Richard Gadd). The plot of “Baby Reindeer” is adapted from Gadd’s own life, and he just won three Emmys for producing, writing and starring in the project.

Hacks‘ third season wrapped up not too long ago, but the Max original comedy from Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, is already back to work for Season 4. As fans will recall, Season 3’s final moments put iconic stand-up Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and comedy writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) at odds, with the latter blackmailing Deborah into giving her the head writer job on her new late-show host gig. What is in store going forward? Only time will tell, but some details have already emerged regarding the next chapter. Below, we’re breaking down everything you need to know from which stars are returning to how many episodes are on the horizon. How many episodes will Hacks Season 4 have? Max Season 4 of Hacks will feature 10 all-new episodes, according to Variety. That brings the count up by one over Season 3’s nine-episode run and up to Season 1’s original run.

Hannah Einbinder made a surprise cameo in Saturday Night Live’s landmark 50th season premiere on Saturday, September 28, joining host Jean Smart in introducing musical guest Jelly Roll’s performance of the song “Liar.” Einbinder’s appearance shouldn’t be that much of a surprise: She and Smart are the lead stars of the Max comedy Hacks, but Einbinder is also part of the SNL family as the daughter of original cast member Laraine Newman. Newman joined Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Chevy Chase, George Coe, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, Michael O’Donoghue, and Gilda Radner in the SNL Season 1 cast in 1975 and stayed on the NBC sketch-comedy show for five years. She married voice actor Chad Einbinder in 1991, and the couple welcomed Einbinder in 1995. Newman will be played by Emily Fairn in the upcoming movie about SNL‘s very first episode, Saturday Night, coming to theaters on October 11. Hannah Einbinder is here!

Hannah Einbinder was in Studio 8H after all.
Einbinder made a cameo on Saturday Night Live alongside her Hacks co-star Jean Smart to introduce Jelly Roll.
But while she works alongside Smart on the Max comedy series, Einbinder has enough of her own history with the long-running NBC series – she is the daughter of Laraine Newman, who starred in SNL from the very beginning.
Newman was one of the Og stars from Season 1 (she’s played by Emily Fairn in Jason Reitman’s movie Saturday Night) until she left in 1980.
Newman was in the news earlier this month after she was tweeting up a storm around the Emmys, when she slammed The Bear being in the comedy category.
Smart, meanwhile, was wearing a Jelly Roll T-shirt as the pair were introducing the musician.

Saturday Night Live season 50 kicks off tonight with host Jean Smart. But the actor's Hacks co-star Hannah Einbinder is also a contender to cameo during the episode thanks to her SNL connection.
Smart will make SNL history when she takes the stage tonight. Hosting the season 50 premiere is a well-deserved honor for the accomplished actor.
But Smart would be among the first to say that she shares in Hacks' success with her co-star Hannah Einbinder. It wouldn't have been shocking to hear Einbinder got the call from Lorne Michaels to host tonight's episode. However, Smart is the official lead and is coming off another Emmy win for her portrayal of Deborah Vance.
A Saturday Night Live season premiere often has a few surprises for the audience. Fans already expect Maya Rudolph to be in the building as Kamala Harris. We also may get cameos from whoever SNL picked to play...

As AI becomes more of a reality by the day, Hollywood is organizing to regulate its usage in the entertainment industry.

When Emmy presenter Catherine O’Hara announced “Hacks” as the winner of Best Comedy Series at Sunday’s Primetime ceremony, awards pundits everywhere had to pick their jaws up off the floor. “The Bear” was the overwhelming front-runner to claim its second victory in that top category, especially after setting a new comedy record in 2024 for 11 wins in the same season. But “Hacks” prevailed, and in doing so it became only the third show in history to win Best Comedy Series for Season 3 after losing its first two bids.
The other two laffers to accomplish this rare Emmy feat are “Get Smart” in 1968 and “Sex and the City” in 2001, which means “Hacks” now finds itself in rare company indeed. For the record, “Get Smart” lost for Season 1 in 1966 to “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and lost for Season 2 in 1967 to “The Monkees”; “Sex and the City” lost for Season 1 in 1999 to...

During the 76th annual Primetime Emmys, FX did the unthinkable: It beat both HBO and Netflix.
The Disney-owned basic cable network scored a total of 93 Emmy nominations, winning 36 awards compared to Netflix’s 24 and HBO’s 14. HBO, a longtime Emmys champion, has been beaten before — Netflix pulled a historic 44 wins in 2021 compared to HBO’s 19.
What’s notable now is that the poster child for award-winning television came in third on Sunday.
“I don’t think just because HBO had a slightly down year they’re going anywhere. I easily could find them back on top,” FX Networks chairman John Landgraf told TheWrap in a post-Emmys interview, as praise for Disney came pouring in for daring shows like “Shōgun,” “The Bear” and an audience favorite, Ron Howard’s “Jim Henson Idea Man.”
By contrast, HBO was the surprise winner for Best Comedy with “Hacks.”

High Potential is making its debut on ABC. The new procedural, which flits between comedy and drama, stars Kaitlin Olson as a genius who gets hired as a police consultant after she makes a break in a case that changes the tide of the investigation. Her decision to highlight what they'd missed takes her from cleaning the precinct to helping to solve crimes with Det. Karadec who is definitely not as free spirited as Morgan nor would he bring children to a crime scene but, hey, Morgan is a single mother with three kids, where she goes they go if that's what has to happen.

Saturday Night Live alumna Laraine Newman, and mother to Hacks star Hannah Einbinder, slammed the inclusion of The Bear in the Emmys comedy category ahead of last night’s ceremony in since-deleted posts made on X.
“Every time I think about ‘The Bear’ being in the comedy category for the Emmys I can feel an ulcer developing,” she wrote ahead of the 76th annual show. She added later during the telecast, once the FX series had broken its own record for most wins in a single season for a comedy (with 11), “F—. The. Bear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” The veteran actress and comedian has since removed these posts.
Despite her impassioned initial writing, Newman is not alone in critiquing the decorated series and Emmys bylaws for The Bear‘s classification as a comedy. Critics and fans alike have engaged in such discourse previously, particularly at January’s delayed Emmys ceremony, which saw The Bear...

The last time a company set a record for winning the most Emmys in a single year happened in 2021. That was when Netflix won 44 awards, an achievement that hadn’t been matched since CBS secured 44 wins in 1974. On Sunday, The Walt Disney Company beat both networks with 60 Emmy wins, 36 of which came from FX alone.
“The Emmys have been around for 78 years. Typically, if you have a well-established threshold of record in anything — whether it’s the 100-meter dash, the mile or, frankly, records in baseball — for 78 years, you don’t tend to see those records absolutely shattered,” FX networks chairman John Landgraf told TheWrap Monday. “But 60? That’s 35% higher than the highest number any company has ever achieved in 78 years of the Emmys. And so I’m thrilled.”
The TV executive noted that FX alone would have put Disney in the lead among individual networks or streamers. “But don...

Original “Saturday Night Live” cast member Laraine Newman railed against “The Bear” on Emmys night, where the FX series set a new record for most comedy wins in a single year with 11 trophies for its second season. The previous record holder was the first season of “The Bear” with 10 wins. Newman, who was on “SNL” for five years (and who is also the mother of “Hacks” star Hannah Einbinder), called out the show for supposed category fraud.
“Every time I think about ‘The Bear’ being in the comedy category for the Emmys I can feel an ulcer developing,” Newman posted on X (formerly Twitter) shortly before the awards ceremony kicked off.
She posted later in the night: “I think ‘The Bear ‘is a great show but [in my honest opinion] it’s not a comedy – not even a dark comedy.”
Hannah Einbinder lost the Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series to “The Bear’s” Liza Colón-Zayas.

Original Saturday Night Live cast member Laraine Newman wasn’t happy when her daughter, Hacks star Hannah Einbinder, left last night’s Emmy Awards empty-handed — then Twitter reminded Newman that a golden statuette pales in comparison to a silver spoon.
Ever since the FX series The Bear first started to treat the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ annual awards ceremony like a trophy vending machine in 2023, fans of the other shows represented in the comedy categories have questioned whether the Emmys should really allow a series about a brilliant chef’s experiences with addiction, abuse, trauma and suicide to compete against shows centered around, you know, comedy.

After the Season 3 finale of “Hacks” saw a dynamic shift between Deborah and Ava, Season 4 will explore with the fallout of Ava’s decision as it picks up just 20 minutes after their dramatic confrontation.
“I think the tease that I can give legally is that we pick up 20 minutes or so after where we left off,” cocreator Lucia Aniello told press following the HBO comedy’s Emmys win. “The tension is still high, and there’s still a lot of fallout to explore.”
Specifically, Season 3 left off with Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) finally winning a late night gig, but, despite promising to fight for Ava to be the show’s head writer, Ava (Hannah Einbinder) discovers Deborah actually barred her from the role. Fueled by rage, the finale saw Ava claim the role as her own by blackmailing Deborah.

For me the big story of the night at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sunday was the completely unexpected win by Hacks for Best Comedy Series over The Bear, which was coming off a record 10 Emmy wins in January for its first season. Season 2 of The Bear led with another record 23 nominations, steamrolled through the Creative Arts Emmys last weekend with seven wins, and had another four Sunday night leading up to the final award of the evening. At this point, it felt like a no brainer that the FX series about a chef returning to Chicago to run a restaurant would win. But then the Shocker.
Max’s Hacks, now in its third season, somehow pulled it off and won Best Comedy Series having already scored Comedy Writing and a third win for star Jean Smart as Outstanding Leading Actress in Comedy Series. And although this was the...

So, uh, how did “Hacks” beat “The Bear”? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to break down that shocking Emmy upset and all the winners and losers from Sunday’s 76th Primetime Emmy Awards.
Despite breaking its own record for most wins by a comedy series in one year with 11, “The Bear” failed to grab the big one. The reigning Best Comedy Series champ was taken down by “Hacks,” which “only” won two other awards this year, Best Comedy Actress for Jean Smart — her third — and Best Comedy Writing. Signs also pointed to another series win for “The Bear” after Liza Colón-Zayas beat Hannah Einbinder in Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Did the discourse over whether or not “The Bear” is a comedy finally do it in? Was it the mixed reception to its third season that’s not even eligible until next year?

The Max series won the Emmy Award for best comedy series for its third season, marking its third win of the ceremony. Also nominated in the category were The Bear, Abbott Elementary, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, Reservation Dogs and What We Do in the Shadows.
In her acceptance speech for the award, series co-creator Lucia Aniello emphasized the value of comedy. “Comedy is so important, obviously, to us, but we really feel like it can bridge divides,” she said. “When you laugh with someone, you have something in common with them. So please support comedy. It speaks truth to power. It really does, so support your local comedian.”
Co-star and co-creator Paul W. Downs also addressed the crowd, noting that the team didn’t know if the series would initially sell,...

The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards just aired on ABC, and things went about as expected. In other words, the excellent historical drama Shōgun won Best Drama Series; the caustic slice-of-life series The Bear won Best Comedy Series, since I guess it's a little more like a comedy than Shōgun; and the autobiographical stalker drama Baby Reindeer won Best Limited or Anthology Series.
Those three were the big winners of the night, with them each taking home four awards. Jeremy Allen White won Best Actor In A Comedy Series as expected, and his costar Ebon Moss-Bachrach won Best Supporting Actor. On the drama side, Hiroyuki Sanada won Best Actor and Anna Sawai won Best Actress; she was the one I was really invested in. She was magnificent as Mariko and if she hadn't won I would have been forced to write a strongly worded letter to whoever votes in these things.

“The Bear” cleaned up at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, just not in the final category as so many experts predicted. And “Shōgun” proved more vulnerable than expected, not winning a single Emmy until two hours and 20 minutes into the show.
Below, the 7 biggest unexpected moments of the night.
Billy Crudup Beats Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira from “Shōgun”
Yes, Crudup won this category in 2020 for “The Morning Show,” but that was in the pre-“Shōgun” times. And considering Crudup was up against two other “Morning Show” cast members, Mark Duplass and Jon Hamm, it seemed likely that that voters would split the vote among the three of them, opening up a potential path to victory for Tadanobu Asano from “Shōgun” — or his cast mate Takehiro Hira. In the end, voters more likely split the “Shōgun” vote, clearing the way for Crudup’s second win.

Hollywood’s best gathered on Sunday night to celebrate the year that was in television with the 76th Annual Emmy Awards. Hosted by the “Schitt's Creek” father and son duo of Eugene and Dan Levy, there were a number of thrilling wins for series, including a few that genuinely surprised me.
As has become standard for the TV industry, streaming services dominated with Max, Hulu, and Netflix coming away with the lion’s share of the honors.

There have been years when the Primetime Emmys telecast is riddled with surprise, out-of-left-field winners, and until the very last minute, this ceremony was not one of them. As the experts predicted, “Shōgun” pretty much ran the table, and it and “The Bear” both set records for the most awarded shows ever for a drama and a comedy, respectively. As the hosts Eugene and Dan Levy also noted in their opening banter, “Shōgun” actually set its record during the Creative Arts Emmys with 14 wins, and only furthered that record with four wins on Sunday. And “The Bear” set its record despite providing the one true shock of the night, its loss for best comedy to “Hacks”!
Meanwhile, the Emmys did manage to slip in some unexpected wins — in one case, one even went to, yes, “The Bear.” Here they are.

This was the show’s third win this evening – Jean won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series while show creators Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky won Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.
While Hacks was previously nominated in this same category back in 2021 and in 2022, this was the first win.

Television’s biggest night felt smaller heading into Sunday night’s 76th annual Emmy Awards. Since the 2023 Emmys were unceremoniously booted to 2024 after last year’s writers’ and actors’ strikes, this year’s ceremony was the second in nine months. The 2024 Emmys also took a backseat to national headlines: another assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, another Kansas City Chiefs game with Taylor Swift in attendance, and another Trump social media post that raised eyebrows (“I Hate Taylor Swift”).
But the second Emmys of 2024 acquitted itself well despite that excess baggage with a brisk show that honored the medium, crowned several deserving winners, and ended with a shocking win for “Hacks” that few saw coming.
The headline out of the 2024 Emmys is that “Hacks,” despite only winning two awards heading into the final award of the night, upset “The Bear” to win Best Comedy Series. The unexpected outcome — a...

Only eight months after the last Emmy ceremony (which was delayed due to the strikes), the Primetime Emmy Awards are back, although there were some big surprises in store. Everyone (myself included) expected The Bear to own every category it was nominated in. While it did well, winning many big categories including Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress, it lost Best Comedy Series (and actress) to Hacks.
Netflix’s controversial limited series Baby Reindeer also cleaned up, nabbing awards for star and creator Richard Gadd plus co-star Jessica Gunning. But, FX was the evening’s big winner, with their epic series, Shogun, dominating the drama categories, with the great Hiroyuki Sanada winning the prize for Best Actor, and Anna Sawai taking Best Actress, alongside the show’s Best Drama win. Laraine Newman isn’t holding back her thoughts on the Emmy-winning series The Bear.
The original Saturday Night Live castmember took to X on Sunday night to slam the FX/Hulu hit show for competing in the comedy categories at the 2024 Emmys.
“Every time I think about The Bear being in the comedy category for the Emmys I can feel an ulcer developing,” Newman wrote.
Later in the ceremony, when The Bear set a new record for most wins in a single season for a comedy with 11 (surpassing its own tally from last year when it won 10), the actress added in a since-deleted tweet, “Fuck. The. Bear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
She later tweeted a clarification, writing, “I think the Bear is a great show but Imho it’s not a comedy- not even a dark comedy.”

Rise up, “Hacks” hive!
The beloved HBO series has officially won the 2024 Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series for its long-awaited third season. “Hacks” stars Emmy winner Jean Smart and Emmy-nominated actress Hannah Einbinder as an aging (yet still iconic) stand-up comedian and her writing partner.
Smart has won an Emmy, SAG Award, and Critics Choice Award for playing Deborah Vance; Einbinder has been an Emmy, SAG Award, and Critics Choice Award nominee for her turn as Ava Daniels.
Shockingly, this is the first year that “Hacks” has won the coveted Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy. Both Smart and Einbinder were also nominated at the 2024 awards show.
Fellow nominated comedy series included “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Palm Royale,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” and the respective final seasons of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Reservation Dogs.”

FX’s The Bear has achieved notable wins throughout the 2024 Emmys, even making history and setting a new record.
Ahead of the ceremony, the FX series, starring Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, set a new record for nominations in a single year in the comedy category with 23 noms. The record was previously held by 30 Rock with 22 nominations in 2009.
The series, created by Christopher Storer, was the second-most nominated series for this year’s Emmys with nods for best comedy series, writing for a comedy series, casting and guest actor noms for Jon Bernthal, Bob Odenkirk and Will Poulter, as well as Olivia Colman and Jamie Lee Curtis for guest actress in a comedy series.

“Thank you. Thank you so, so much. It’s very humbling, it really is,” Jean said in her acceptance speech. “And I appreciate this, because I just don’t get enough attention.”
“I’m serious!” Jean added as the audience laughed.
This now marks Jean‘s sixth Emmy win and her third in this same category for Hacks.
Also in attendance at the Emmys were Jean‘s Hacks co-stars Hannah Einbinder, Kaitlin Olson, with husband Rob McElhenney, and Paul W. Downs. Paul also walked the red carpet with fellow co-creators Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky.

“Thank you to my husband, David. He told me to write a speech, and I didn’t, because I didn’t think it would be possible,” said an emotional Liza Colón-Zayas on Sunday, accepting the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as line cook Tina Marrero in The Bear.
It’s her first nomination and first win.
She’s excellent in the FX show, but the Emmy was a surprise as most pundits were banking on Hannah Einbinder for her first Emmy off a third nomination for Season 3 of Hacks. The competitive field also included Carol Burnett for Palm Royale, Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph for Abbott Elementary, and Meryl Streep for Only Murders in the Building.

Jean Smart won the Emmy for lead comedy actress on Sunday, recognizing her portrayal of Deborah Vance in Season 3 of Max’s “Hacks.”
This is her third time taking home the gold for her “Hacks” role, and her sixth Emmy win overall. In 2008, she won supporting comedy actress for “Samantha Who?”, and she won guest comedy actress for “Frasier” in both 2000 and 2001.

“The Bear” star Liza Colón-Zayas could barely suppress her tears as she accepted the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series at the 76th Emmy Awards.
“For all the Latinos who love to love me, keep believing and vote. Vote for your rights,” Colón-Zayas said in her acceptance speech.
Colón-Zayas was up for an especially packed category. This year, the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series included Carol Burnett for Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale,” Hannah Einbinder for Max’s “Hacks,” Janelle James for ABC’s “Abbott Elementary,” Sheryl Lee Ralph for ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and Meryl Streep for Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building.” As “The Bear” star took the stage to accept her award, she admitted that she hadn’t written a speech.

Jean Smart has won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, reclaiming her title from “Abbott Elementary” creator and star Quinta Brunson after “Hacks” was forced to bow out of competition at the beginning of the year due to production delays pushing back its third season.
Smart used her acceptance speech to have a laugh at the expense of her frequently-renamed employer. She began by thanking “everybody at HBO” before playfully correcting herself and saying “Max.” While “Hacks” is overseen by HBO executives, it has not been branded as an HBO series since Warner Bros.’ flagship streaming service changed its name from HBO Max to Max in 2023.

Eugene and Dan Levy delivered a charmingly lighthearted monologue to open the 76th Emmy Awards — “Also known as, broadcast TV’s biggest night for honoring movie stars on streaming services,” Dan quipped.
The father-son duo kept things short and sweet, lightly roasting this year’s nominated programs, the television industry, the television-watching audience, and, of course, themselves. Update, with video: Emmys co-hosts Eugene Levy and son Dan Levy, the award-winning stars of Schitt’s Creek, got tonight’s ceremony off to a gentle but no less funny start tonight, with the elder Levy working in no fewer than two jokes aimed at his old Sctv pal Martin Short.
When Dan Levy told the audience that his last name is pronounced “Leh-vee” and not “Lee-vee,” Eugene said, if the opening monologue goes south “my name is pronounced Martin Short.” At the end of the monologue, Eugene introduced first presenters Steve Martin and Short as the latest contestants on The Golden Bachelor.
The first father-son duo to host the Emmys, the pair made some fine self-deprecating jokes – Eugene had hoped, Dan said, to get them cast by Ryan Murphy as the Menendez Brothers – and also took some good-hearted swipes at this evening’s nominees.

The first father-son duo to host the Emmys, the pair made some fine self-deprecating jokes – Eugene had hoped, Dan said, to get them cast by Ryan Murphy as the Menendez Brothers – and also took some good-hearted swipes at this evening’s nominees.

Is “Shōgun” adding more Emmy hardware to its historic haul? Will “The Bear” break its own record? Those are the big questions heading into the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be broadcast live coast-to-coast from Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. Est/5 p.m Pst on ABC.
Hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, the main ceremony caps off a television year dominated by “Shōgun,” which already set a record for most Emmys by a drama series in a single year when it nearly swept the Creative Arts Emmys with 14. The FX drama, led by Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, will attempt to beef up its overall take when it competes with eight nominations in six top categories: drama series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, writing and directing. TheWrap’s awards guru Steve Pond boldly predicts “Shōgun” will go six for six on Sunday.

As usual, this year’s primetime ceremony occurred one week after the corresponding Creative Arts Emmys – a two-night event primarily focused on artistic and technical accomplishments. Freshman FX drama “Shogun” came out on top there with 14 wins, passing “Game of Thrones” (which won 12 on three occasions) as the new record-holder for most single-season victories (drama series). “Shogun” also flew past the overall record of 13 wins from HBO’s 2008 limited series “John Adams.” How many more can it add to its finally tally tonight? Good times were had and millions were raised at MPTF’s 18th annual Evening Before fundraiser.
The starry event, held at Century Park in Los Angeles on Saturday night, raked in $2.5 million to support the Motion Picture and Television Fund’s programs and services on the Wasserman Campus in Woodland Hills while hosting a who’s who of Emmy nominees, winners and A-list Hollywood insiders on the eve of TV’s biggest night. Century Park was reimagined as a “relaxed town square” by Studio Komorebi complete with carnival games and food stations with a menu provided by L.A. food stars Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo and their Carmelized Prods.
A long list of stars rubbed shoulders with Evening Before co-chairs Greg Berlanti and Robbie Rogers, Jon Hamm and Anna Osceola Hamm, and Sheryl Lee Ralph. Those on the scene included Eric André, Awkwafina, Justin Baldoni, Alex Borstein, Alison Brie,...
