“Is it possible to love someone so completely they simply can’t die?” Such optimistic, doe-eyed sentimentality is just a taste of the treacly emotional core of Winter’s Tale. At least, it’s a taste of the schmaltzy script penned by Akiva Goldsman (who also takes a rare turn directing the film), a screenwriter better known for his much finer work on A Beautiful Mind and Fringe (to name a couple). No stranger to filmic adaptations (he’s adapted novels by John Grisham and Dan Brown), it seems that he really missed the mark with this adaptation of Mark Helprin’s beloved and lauded novel (but then, condensing an 800-page novel into a two-hour movie would require far more magic than that steeped in the world of Winter’s Tale).

Sure, P.L. Travers might be the most publicly known disaffected author (at least as it applies to the full-scale cinematic and, on her end, utterly despised imagining of her beloved “Mary Poppins” by Walt Disney — what, did you miss Saving Mr. Banks?), but she’s far from the only one. Stephen King is notoriously not a fan of The Shining, Anthony Burgess so disliked the movie version of his A Clockwork Orange that he regretted writing his own book, Bret Easton Ellis almost roundly dismisses movie takes on his novels, and the list goes on and on (we’re betting that Mark Helprin isn’t too excited about the recent spin on Winter’s Tale), but it doesn’t always have to be the case. In fact, it’s sort of fun when it’s not. The Ya genre has been mostly lucky when it comes to author-approved movies – at least when it comes to its most...

A second weekend adds to The Lego Movie's impressive tally as it retains its top slot above Mr Peabody & Sherman and Disney's Tinker Bell and the Pirate Fairy
• The Lego Movie – review
• Mr Peabody & Sherman – review
• More on the UK box office
The winner
Our compact half-term school holidays always concentrate the minds of UK families, offering rich potential for bonanza box-office over a highly compressed time period. And so it has proved with the half-term just ended: from Friday 14 February to Sunday 23 February, The Lego Movie has taken an astonishing £19.72m in just 10 days of play, an average of nearly £2m per day. Add in the previews from the previous weekend, and the film's tally to date rises to a stonking £21.88m. That's more than the lifetime totals of the two lowest-grossing Pixar films – Cars and Cars 2 – and is also ahead of both Kung Fu Panda pictures from DreamWorks Animation.

Colin Farrell and Russell Crowe star in a glutinous fantasy romance about destiny and miracles
This misguided folly is released here just when everyone has had their fill of winter, and just too late to be a Valentine's release, as it was in the Us – where the polar vortex has made snowbound stories particularly unwelcome.
Based on Mark Helprin's novel, Winter's Tale, this first directing effort by the screenwriter of A Beautiful Mind is a glutinous fantasy romance about destiny, miracles and a devil (played by an uncredited Will Smith) who lives under a bridge and wears a Jimi Hendrix T-shirt. In 1916 Manhattan, Colin Farrell escapes from Russell Crowe's Irish gangster Pearly on the back of a flying horse (no, I have not been at the spiked punch), then falls for doomed ingenue Jessica Brown Findlay, who walks barefoot in the snow and has the hale, rosy-cheeked glow peculiar to Hollywood consumptives.

A prolific screenwriter, responsible for the scripts for The Client, A Time to Kill, A Beautiful Mind, and The Da Vinci Code, Akiva Goldsman makes his directorial debut with A New York Winter's Tale, based on the acclaimed novel, Winter's Tale (the title for the movie in America), by Mark Helprin. A romantic fantasy spanning centuries, the story concerns Peter Lake (Colin Farrell), a burglar in 1900's New York who, on the run from demonic gangster Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe), falls for Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown Findlay). When tragedy strikes, Peter is thrust forward to present day, minus his memories, but knowing he has something important to fulfill. On paper, Winter's Tale is a modern day fairy tale that deserves every piece of praise heaped upon it. Sadly, this doesn't translate to the big screen, with A New York Winter's Tale falling at the first hurdle. The movie's heart is in the right place,...

Akiva Goldsman’s screenwriting résumé makes for curious reading. On the one hand, here we have someone who penned the Oscar-winning screenplay for A Beautiful Mind; on the flipside, he also helped write 1997’s Batman & Robin, widely regarded (with good reason) as one of the worst superhero films ever made. For his latest project – an adaptation of Mark Helprin’s beloved novel A New York Winter’s Tale – Goldsman takes on directorial duties for the first time in addition to writing and producing, and there’s little doubt as to which column this film resides.
The nonsensical narrative revolves around Peter Lake (Colin Farrell), an orphaned thief in 19th century New York who is on the run from his demonic mentor Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe). Seemingly cornered by Soames’ gang, Peter escapes with the assistance of a magical flying white horse (which he promptly dubs ‘Horse’). On his way out of town,...

A leaden, charmless movie that is unable to commit to its own fantasy. So implausible that even Colin Farrell’s own Irish accent sounds fake. I’m “biast” (pro): love Colin Farrell and Russell Crowe
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of “magic realism”
I have not read the source material

Thank you, Winter’s Tale movie — aka A New York Winter’s Tale in the U.K. in order that, I suspect, it not be confused with Shakespeare, which was never going to happen — for confirming what I’ve always felt about the weasel phrase “magic realism”: that it is a feeble, lazy attempt to dress up in literary pretensions an inability to fully commit to fantasy. This might not be true of the Mark Helprin novel this is based on; I haven’t read it...

Director: Akiva Goldsman; Screenwriter: Akiva Goldsman; Starring: Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, William Hurt; Running time: 118 mins; Certificate: 12A
Colin Farrell is cast adrift in an airy-fairy adaptation of Mark Helprin's weighty magical realist novel, playing Peter Lake, an Irish immigrant who walks the streets of New York for a hundred years, without ageing a day. Love is what sustains him, along with some heavenly hocus pocus, but A Beautiful Mind scribe Akiva Goldsman (making his directorial debut) fails to anchor the soaring flights of fancy in the day-to-day grind.
For one thing, his well-heeled sweetheart Beverly (Downton Abbey's Lady Sybil, Jessica Brown Findlay) is lacking in substance despite staring death in the face with a bad case of consumption in 1914. She's just so darned sanguine, even when Peter makes her acquaintance while robbing her home. But, hey, he rides a white horse so...

I have to be honest, I initially thought Winter's Tale was an adaptation of one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, The Winter's Tale -- I hadn't heard of author Mark Helprin's 1983 novel, adapted into the new movie, until watching the trailer.
It's no coincidence that the movie made its U.S. theatrical debut on Valentine's Day -- a marketing ploy, of course, to get couples to hunker down in the dark for two-ish hours to watch actor Colin Farrell make love look even more confusing than it already is. This says something about Farrell, a chap whose real-life romantic mishaps have made headlines and had heads shaking (lest we forget his public outings with Britney Spears).
And its hard to forget this in the aptly named Winter's Tale because Farrell plays the burglar-with-a-heart-of-gold, Peter Lake, so much like his public persona: greasy, strangely-cut hair and all... with an Irish accent.

When Australian distributors launch films in the same week as the Us, it.s usually because they want to cash in on the global hype and publicity- or they are striving to limit the impact of lousy of-of-mouth on social media.
The latter tactic is clearly the case with Endless Love and Winter.s Tale, which both aimed to capitalise as date movies on Valentine.s Day.
Endless Love, the remake of Franco Zeffirelli.s 1981 film which starred Brooke Shields but was more memorable for newcomers Tom Cruise and James Spader, fetched $1.08 million in Australia, earning nearly half of that last Friday.
In the Us, the romantic drama starring Alex Pettyfer, Gabriella Wilde, Bruce Greenwood and Joely Richardson took an estimated $US13.3 million in four days, a poor result.

Winter’S Tale… more like Winter’S Snail, because this movie is slow, boring, and incredibly hard not to shake your head at.
Based off of the novel by Mark Helprin, Winter’S Tale tells the romantic tale of Peter Lake (Colin Farrell) , a orphaned thief trying to run away from the evil crime leader who took him in, Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe). While on his way out-of-town, destiny brings him to the doorstep of Beverly (Jessica Brown Findlay), a 20-year-old woman who is dying of consumption. Fate has brought them together, and Pearly is determined to rip them apart. See, Peter isn’t aware that he is surrounded by angels and demons. He must discover on his own that his fate has already been mapped out.

Chicago – The poster for “Winter’s Tale,” after promising that “It’s not a true story, it’s a love story,” makes a large demand from its viewers at the bottom: “This Valentine’s Day, Believe In Miracles.”
While there is indeed a difference between filmmaking and marketing, it is hard to not imagine writer/director Akiva Goldsman whispering “believe in miracles” into the ear of every executive who helped “Winter’s Tale” come to life, immediately after throwing glitter on them.
Rating: 1.5/5.0
The catch with miracles in movies is not whether we believe in miracles, but if we trust, or more directly, buy them. Do we buy the miraculous magic of Goldsman’s “Winter’s Tale”? Not at all. You can’t believe a miracle if you don’t trust the story behind it.

That thud you just heard was “Winter’s Tale” landing in the theaters today, and poised to become a touchstone in the history of misbegotten literary adaptations. It’s been 30 years since Mark Helprin published his enchanting and enchanted novel about time travel, Old New York, beautiful consumptives, a gang called the Short Tails, and a Marc Chagall-meets-steam-punk aesthetic. But given what Akiva Goldsman has chosen to do with it, well, there was really no hurry. The veteran screenwriter ("The Da Vinci Code"), making his feature directorial debut, apparently thought what Helprin’s magic-realist novel needed was less magic. This he has provided. The baroque construction of the novel is lost, the emotional resonance of the language is abandoned, the things that seemed charmed in the book now seem juvenile, especially since they’re given no room to breathe or live. The movie isn’t just inert, it seems silly.

Two romantic films just in time for Valentine.s! First we have .Winter.s Tale. starring Colin Farrell and Jessica Brown Findlay as a couple whose love transcends time. The movie also stars Russell Crowe, William Hurt, Eva Marie Saint, and a cameo by Will Smith as.gasp.Lucifer! This is from writer-director Akiva Goldsman based on the 1983 book by Mark Helprin.
We also have .Endless Love,. the remake of the ultra-schmaltzy 1981 original of the same name starring Brooke Shields and Martin Hewitt from director Franco Zeffirelli. The 2014 remake is pretty much the same Romeo and Juliet rehash but this one stars Alex Pettyfer (.Magic Mike.) and Gabrielle Wilde (.The Three Musketeers.) with Shana Feste at the helm.

Winter’s Tale
Written and directed by Akiva Goldsman
USA, 2014
It’s interesting to consider how readily we accept the notion of true love at first sight in animated films instead of live-action ones. We more easily appreciate the Disney princess stories of our collective youth where a handsome prince stumbles upon a fair maiden and, in spite of various obstacles, the two connect at the end and live happily ever after. Fairy tales are inherently ridiculous and operate with a kind of dream logic, one that dulls like worn steel over time. As children’s stories, working with an almost deliberate illogic is appropriate; as stories for a wider, more adult audience, though, fairy tales sometimes feel like misbegotten folly. Winter’s Tale has more than a touch of the fantastical and whimsical, and though it is arguably a folly of some sorts, it’s a strangely fascinating one.

Amidst a crisp and clear London evening the cast and crew of Winter’s Tale gathered for the premiere of Akiva Goldsman’s latest film.
Starring Colin Farrell and Jessica Brown Findlay the Valentine’s Day release is no coincidence, as Goldsman has taken Mark Helprin’s acclaimed novel A New York Winter’s Tale and thrown in with full seasonal force onto the big screen.
Our regular presiders of premieres Colin Hart and Ben Mortimer were on the red carpet to ask the questions, the interviews are below. More will be added throughout the evening.

Winter's Tale tries so hard to be epic it ultimately fails at telling what could have been a decent (albeit silly) tale of love, morals and a religious battle between angels and demons. Instead it wants to be mythic. It wants so badly to create a connection to the modern world that it forgets all it needs to do is make a human connection, something it actually accomplishes early on until it tries to be something it never was. Attempting to tell a story that began in the early 1900s and ends in present day, had writer/director Akiva Goldsman only stuck to the period portion of his story, adapted from the Mark Helprin novel, he would have been far better off, especially considering that's where he spends the bulk of his story, focusing on Peter Lake (Colin Farrell), a master thief in 1916 that's attempting to go straight. Peter was...

The moment I got home from my screening of "Winter's Tale," written and directed by Akiva Goldsman, the first thing I did was download the novel to my Kindle so I could read it. I made it four chapters before I set it aside, satisfied that whatever my problems are with "Winter's Tale" have little or nothing to do with Mark Helprin or his book. Mr. Helprin, you are free to go. This is one of those books that people don't just like… they love it. It is important to them. When you talk to a fan of the book, they...

Usually, one can clump bad films into two categories. The first are those with stories and characters so dull and lifeless that audience interest wanes instantly. The second are incomprehensibly silly tales that can only work if one embraces their kitschy or campy qualities. Winter’s Tale, the howlingly silly and perplexing debut feature of Oscar-winning scribe Akiva Goldsman, holds the rare distinction of being a third kind of awful. It blends these two aforementioned tomes of terrible cinema together into something almost unwatchable.
Winter’s Tale is adapted from Mark Helprin’s literary fantasy, which runs close to 700 pages and was a massive hit in the mid-1980s. Years ago, Martin Scorsese was going to direct a version of Helprin’s novel but even he found it unreleasable. Clearly, this project needed a director who could capture Helprin’s magical realism in an enchanting way. Instead, it comes from...

With Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day falling on the same wintery weekend, the studios are betting that love sick couples and self-loathing singles will both be lining up for some romantic movies this weekend -- how else to explain the simultaneous release of an unnecessary "Endless Love" remake, an "About Last Night" redo, and "Winter's Tale," arguably the most "original" of the three V-Day offerings but still an adaptation of a 1983 novel written by Mark Helprin.
The film was written and directed by Akiva Goldsman, perhaps best known for his Oscar-winning screenplay for "A Beautiful Mind" (or, conversely, for running the Batman franchise into the ground with the script for "Batman & Robin"), and stars Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay, Jennifer Connelly, and Russell Crowe. Oh, and Will Smith (more on that in a minute). It's a tale of timeless love and spiritual reawakening and is designed to make couples everywhere...

Akiva Goldsman is one of those Hollywood screenwriters who has accrued a fair amount of animosity over the years, both because of his perceived lack of talent (he did have a hand in scripting "Batman & Robin," "The Da Vinci Code," and "Lost in Space," amongst others) and for his almost unparalleled level of success (he won a Best Screenplay Oscar for his work on Ron Howard's "A Beautiful Mind," and in the process taught us all that mental illness could be cured through the healing power of love). Regardless of what you think of him, Goldsman has genuine power, and for the past few years has used that power to secure funding for a lavish adaptation of novelist Mark Helprin's goopy 1983 supernatural romance "Winter's Tale." It is the ultimate Akiva Goldsman statement, mixing both his propensity for high concept gobbledygook with cloying, saccharine sentimentality. The result is a...

In a blast from the past, a trio of remakes invade the multiplex this weekend hoping to see a boost from Valentine's Day and Presidents' Day -- RoboCop, About Last Night and Endless Love, all based on movies from the 1980s. It's a little sad that Colin Farrell has outgrown roles that require him to wear raggedy sweaters and say things like "For fook's sake!" It had to happen, though. Farrell has always made a terrific bad boy, but he clearly knows he couldn't be a scamp forever, and he seems to be settling into some very serious, responsible-adult roles. Last year he played a doting, if heavy-drinking, father in Saving Mr. Banks. Now, in Akiva Goldsman's Winter's Tale, based on Mark Helprin's bestselling novel set in a mythical version of early 20th-century Manhattan, he plays Peter Lake, a petty criminal who tries to go straight, much to the dismay of the demonic, supranaturally gifted crime ...

Are you ready for romance, intrigue, reincarnation, and Colin Farrell on a horse?
Of course you are, because you're looking forward to seeing the movie version of author Mark Helprin's "Winter's Tale" -- about a man with the gift of reincarnation who sets out to save the woman he loves -- this Valentine's Day. And what better way to celebrate your love of a good ol' fashioned sweeping, fairy tale-esque love story than with some sweeping sounds from the movie? We're debuting three full-length instrumentals from composers Hans Zimmer and Rupert Gregson-Williams, as well as pop songstress KT Tunstall's single "Miracle, in its entirety, a day before the soundtrack's release.
The first three tracks, each by co-composers Hans Zimmer and Rupert Gregson-Williams, give you a sense of the themes inherent to the movie. The spare, piano-sprinkled melancholia of "What's the Best Thing You've Ever Stolen?" will pull at your heartstrings,...

This Valentine's Day, you'll have a few romantic options to choose from at the mulitplex: there will be the Kevin Hart-starring remake "About Last Night," another remake with "Endless Love," and the fantasy epic "Winter's Tale." And while we can't tell you which of these is the better movie, we certainly know which one is the most expensive. Akiva Goldsman, the writer behind "I Am Legend," "Cinderella Man" and uh, "Batman & Robin," steps behind the camera for his first film, an adaptation of Mark Helprin's celebrated and beloved novel. Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown-Findlay, Jennifer Connelly and Russell Crowe star in this movie, which seems to be a cousin to "Cloud Atlas" in some ways, dealing with past lives touching upon the present and what not, and a romance that spans lifetimes. As for the actual plot, we're still not quite clear, but it involves a thief, a...

It's rare when a film adaptation lives up the book it was based on so with that in mind I have compiled a list of 40 books that have been adapted for the big screen that we can expect to see in theaters this year. This includes two books from Gillian Flynn, young adult adaptations of work by Veronica Roth, Suzanne Collins and James Dashner, a short story from Dennis Lehane, a Nick Hornby adaptation, and an adaptation written by Nick Hornby, a new John le Carre adaptation and a prequel to the stories written by Tom Clancy as well as a couple comics and graphic novel adaptations from the likes of Frank Miller and Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Alexander O. Smith. I've added everything I could think of and while I'm sure I missed a few, please forgive me and hopefully you'll find something that appeals to your taste on the list.
