JT is a filmmaker hailing from Queens, NY with a keen focus on gender equality and forgotten historical narratives. As a husband and father, he offers a wealth of life experience to his work, infusing each project with a unique perspective that is both insightful and engaging.
His passion for storytelling began in high school where he was selected by committee to write and produce a feature-length play that received critical acclaim and ran for several weekends on campus. Later, he received the Ohio University Research Grant during his college years, which enabled him to delve into the antiquated and often overlooked histories of Sri Lankan Queens. This project resulted in his induction into the prestigious National Leadership Honor Society, Omicron Delta Kappa.
As a martial artist, He has long been inspired by his childhood heroes, including Sensei Debbie Pittak, who instilled in him a deep sense of honor, discipline, and humility. It was through her guidance that he was introduced to Miyamoto Musashi's "The Book of Five Rings," which taught him the importance of decisive leadership and the ability to make cuts without hesitation. Similarly, Lao Tzu's novel, the Tao Te Tsing, emphasized the value of empowering others to take ownership of their work. These lessons have been invaluable in guiding his approach to directing film crews.
Finally, he draws inspiration from his Grandmaster, Sensei Tatsuo Shimabuku, who taught us the value of continuous improvement. He believed that there is always something to be improved upon, no matter how skilled you are. It is with this dedication to constant refinement that we approach the craft of filmmaking and the lifelong pursuit of storytelling.
