Poland’s American Film Festival is continuing to bet on U.S. independent films, ignoring the Hollywood blockbusters and bigger budget auteur films from the mini-majors.
“The fest selects a very precise type of project – they are real independent films, not in that Independent Spirit Award, less-than-$40 million sense,” says director and producer Rob Rice.
“The people that come with them have a kind of shorthand with each other. We are all up against the same things and we are all trying to trick the industry into mistaking our films for ‘real movies.’”
“There are always lots of interesting things happening in American independent cinema. It’s enough to mention three alumni of [fest’s industry sidebar] U.S. in Progress: Anu Valia (“We Strangers”), India Donaldson (“Good One”) and Sarah Friedland. These are great examples of new female voices speaking about female experiences, and keeping things intimate and personal,” says artistic director Ula Śniegowska.

The 50th Annual Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) wrapped up on Sunday and announced the winners of the 2024 Golden Space Needle Audience and Juried Competition Awards.

We Strangers
One of the highlights of this year’s South By Southwest, Anu Valia’s We Strangers follows Ray (Kirby), a cleaner whose life changes abruptly as a result of an impulsive lie. When she tells one of her wealthy white employers that she can see into the spirit world, she suddenly finds herself in a position of power, which changes the way that she looks at the world and the life she has been living. I was delighted to get the opportunity to talk to Anu, and although she was a little guarded, not wanting to say anything that might restrict viewer’s freedom to make up their own minds about the film, we still found a lot to discuss.

In “We Strangers,” Rayelle (Kirby) confesses to her mother (Tina Lifford) that she doesn’t have dreams. Perhaps she doesn’t have time for them, or else she’s simply too exhausted to hang onto anything else in her head after spending her days as a cleaning lady, monitoring her every move so as not to become any part of the mess she picks up for other people. Still, this isn’t to say she can’t have fantasies in Anu Valia’s absorbing character study, except like everything else her life, they’re not for herself when her observational skills lead some to think she’s psychic.

It’s hard to imagine the Gary, Indiana janitorial community having many savvier political operators than Ray Martin (Kirby Howell-Baptiste). The commercial custodian knows that she’s every bit as smart as the people whose messes she spends her days cleaning up, but she takes bits of joy in adapting to whatever environment she ends up being thrust into. But at the start of “We Strangers,” Anu Valia’s feature directorial debut that seems destined to be one of the breakout hits of SXSW 2024, she finds herself in a puzzling situation that even she can’t quite wrap her mind around.
In the middle of one of her shifts cleaning the office of Dr. Neeraj Patel (Hari Dhillon), the wealthy therapist propositions her to become his personal housekeeper. It’s not immediately clear why he took an interest in her, but she accepts the curious gig with the hope of making a little extra money.

She pretty much began her film career with a bang winning Sundance’s Jury Prize for US Fiction for her short, and then followed that up with lots of television work (more recently directing She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) before moving into her feature film debut this past February. Shot in Indiana, Anu Valia‘s We Strangers is about class divides and it was supported by Cinereach, the Sundance Institute and 2023’s U.S. in Progress at the American Film Festival in Wroclaw.

Not long ago, an award-winning Polish composer who’d scored dozens of films approached Ula Śniegowska about U.S. in Progress, an industry event conceived as a bridge between the Polish and American markets that runs parallel to the American Film Festival in Wrocław, Poland.
“He approached me saying, ‘I’ve done enough in the Polish market. I need an introduction to the international market. Can you, as U.S. in Progress, help me?’” Śniegowska recalls. “It seems we are a perfect matchmaker for those types of companies to have their work exposed in the U.S.”
Celebrating its 13th edition, U.S. in Progress was launched as a showcase for emerging independent American filmmakers. Each year, the event presents a curated selection of American indie titles in the final stages of production to European sales agents, distributors and festival programmers. This year’s edition takes place Nov. 8 – 10.

Josh Segarra has been consistently working in film and television and earning a living as an actor for well over a decade. And while he insists he’s “just trying to stay busy,” his career received a shot of adrenalin over the past year that found him cast as a regular on three series: the comedy “The Other Two” on Max, the first-year Marvel Universe superhero drama “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” on Disney+ and the freshman comedy “The Big Door Prize” on Apple TV+. That’s in addition to his having a role in this past spring’s “Scream VI” horror flick. Does Segarra feel like he’s broken through to a new level? “It’s very nice and very flattering to hear that,” he says, “but honestly I’m not thinking about that. I’m just having a ball playing in the world I’m playing in right now,...

Plot: Follows a realtor, a former tennis star and a plumber who seize a unique opportunity to capitalize on America’s obsession with true crime
Review: The only thing that is getting more tiresome than true-crime series are the projects that try to develop a twist on the already twist-heavy genre. While adaptations of actual criminal cases and murderers have not slowed down in recent years, there has been a new crop of fictional tales focused on average people obsessed with true crime and involved in the investigation themselves. At the same time, few have come close to the brilliance of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, which has not stopped podcast-oriented copycats from popping up on other streamers. The latest addition is Peacock’s Based on a True Story. The series from producers Michael Costigan and Jason Bateman boasts the star power of Kaley Cuoco and Chris Messina...

The season one finale of "She-Hulk" features an unorthodox twist. Instead of facing her foes in a brutal smash-fest, She-Hulk, aka Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), breaks the fourth wall - literally - and bursts through the Disney+ menu to talk with K.E.V.I.N., a sentient robot that controls the MCU (and a comedic take on actual Marvel head Kevin Feige). The pair argue about storytelling, the McU's Disney+ series' endings, and whose show it really is.
Maslany tells Popsugar that when showrunner Jessica Gao first told her this idea for the finale, she wondered if the head honchos at Marvel would let them do it. "But I think that's why I loved it so much," she says. "It felt so innately 'She-Hulk.' And it also felt very Jessica Gao. It also felt very female. . . . Jennifer Walters has a complicated life as a single, 30-something attorney who also happens to be a green 6-foot-7-inch superpowered hulk.
We are finally getting to the point where the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is so grandiose that the folks over at Disney can practically make a series or movie about any character from Marvel’s overwhelmingly large roster and it would be successful, at least in terms of viewership.
She-Hulk is a character that isn’t too famous, and yet here we are, in the year 2022, and she has her own show now. This was a show I wasn’t really looking forward to, however, despite being a fan of this franchise.

She-Hulk director Anu Valia has directed 22 episodes of television since 2020, which is an impressive feat considering how challenging TV production has become in the pandemic era. Three of those episodes include Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk, and Valia, like many people, assumed she knew what a Marvel set would be like. Kat Coiro, the co-director of the recently released limited series ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’, has shared her experience of how she got acquainted with the titular character and how she explored the character in her childhood.
Talking about how she has long been drawn to the emerald-hued hero, Kat, who helmed six episodes of the series, said, “I was a huge fan of She-Hulk as a child, and she was a really badass female superhero who had her own book.”
Coiro also recently discovered her husband had an entire collection of the comics, “We went to his mom’s basement, and I got to go back through the comics and remember what was so exciting about She-Hulk. She’s irreverent, big, strong and bold.”
For the Indian-American director, Anu Valia, who helmed three episodes, it was the depth of the character’s personality that piqued her interest.

"She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" is promising to be a bold new step in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This isn't because the show is going to feature a galaxy-altering villain or a big cinematic battle, but rather, it's looking to be the opposite of many Marvel projects. From navigating the New York City dating scene to working on superhuman legal cases, "She-Hulk" looks to shine a light on the unseen, somewhat mundane events happening in-between "Avengers" team-ups.
Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany) is your typical city lawyer in her mid-30s, trying to navigate her life in-between big cases. She also just so happens to be the cousin of the Incredible Hulk himself, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). After she accidentally comes into contact with her cousin's blood, Jennifer is now able to transform into a six-foot-four superhuman, appropriately dubbed She-Hulk. A new premiere date and rollout for Marvel’s upcoming Disney+ series “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” was announced Wednesday during the streamer’s presentation at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.
Instead of debuting on its originally announced premiere date of Wednesday, August 17, “She-Hulk” will premiere Thursday, August 18. The nine-episode comedy series will then roll out weekly on Thursdays, marking a change in strategy.
The move marks Disney+’s continued expansion of its programming schedule. While certain blockbuster series such as “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” “Ms. Marvel” and “The Book of Boba Fett” debuted new episodes on Wednesdays, Season 2 of “The Mandalorian” delivered new chapters on Fridays, a day Netflix has long dominated with its own new binge releases. “She-Hulk” will be the first Marvel series to drop new episodes on Thursdays.

Tatiana Maslany is getting into lawyer mode. A new trailer for “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” has been released out of Marvel Studio’s Comic-Con panel this Saturday. The cast and crew in attendance billed the series as Marvel’s first half-hour TV comedy.
“This is so overwhelming,” Maslany said at the top of Comic-Con panel. “What’s so exciting about She-Hulk is this show is very different. It’s irreverent humor. She-Hulk is trying not to be a superhero.”
Part-superhero show and part comedy, the series centers on Jennifer Walters (Maslany), a brilliant lawyer and the cousin of longtime MCU hero Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). When Jennifer suffers a major injury, Bruce is forced to provide her a blood transfusion, causing her to inherit his powers to turn into a “hulk” version of herself. HBO Max’s new trailer for “And Just Like That,” its revival of “Sex and the City,” expands on the teaser, revealing where Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and the gang are more than 11 years after we saw them in the movie “Sex and the City 2.”
Along with Parker, Kristin Davis has returned as Charlotte and Cynthia Nixon once again plays Miranda. Kim Cattrall has chosen not to come back as fan-favorite Samantha, due to issues that have been well documented over the years. “Sex and the City” mainstays Chris Noth, Mario Cantone, David Eigenberg, Evan Handler and Willie Garson — who died in September — reprise their past roles. New cast members Sara Ramírez, Sarita Choudhury, Nicole Ari Parker and Karen Pittman join them.
The trailer appears to reveal that the three women are still married — at least for now — and spotlights Big on a Peloton, kissing Carrie, and saying to her,...

HBO Max has debuted the official trailer for “And Just Like That…” the 9-episode series return of HBO’s flagship comedy “Sex and the City.” As expected, the series will be full of high fashion, quippy dialogue, and beloved characters — with some exciting new additions as well. Franchise talents Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis are all returning to reprise their career-defining roles. Only Kim Cattrall is awkwardly absent. Following two blockbuster movies in 2008 and 2010, a third film was shelved in 2017 when Cattrall refused to return, saying she’d “had enough” playing Samantha Jones. Determined to forge ahead without their bawdiest broad, the remaining trio banded together and reshaped the revival for television, returning “Sex and the City” to its original form. And just like that, “And Just Like That…” was born.

When Disney streaming service Disney+ launched on November 12, 2019, the Marvel Cinematic Universe was still a ways away from making its streaming debut. Marvel titles like Daredevil and Runaways had already graced the streaming world on platforms like Netflix and Hulu, but it wouldn’t be until WandaVision premiered on Jan. 15, 2021 that Marvel’s celluloid canon joined its televised one.
By the time Disney+ Day, a celebration of the streamer’s two-year anniversary, rolled around today, the Marvel machine was in full force. With The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, and Marvel’s What…If? joining the aforementioned WandaVision on television, it would be unthinkable for any Disney+ Day to come and go without some fresh Marvel news. Thankfully, Marvel chief Kevin Feige and the Disney powers-that-be agreed. Not only did Disney+ Day come with some much-needed updates on long-awaited Marvel TV titles, but they were saved until the very end of the presentation.

On Disney+ Day, the studio dropped a lengthy piece of never-before-seen footage toward the end of its presentation with a look at its coming 2022 Marvel series — Moon Knight, She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel — as well as a great chase scene from the upcoming series Hawkeye which debuts on November 24.
The clip, which is not available online, can only be seen on Disney+.
The streamer also made some news Friday in the Marvel universe, saying that that it has ordered animated series Marvel Zombies as well as comics-rooted X-Men ‘97 and Spider-Man: Freshman Year.
As for the new looks, there was a quick glimpse of Oscar Isaac as Moon Knight, a complex vigilante who suffers from dissociative identity disorder. The multiple identities who live inside him find themselves thrust into a deadly war of the gods against the backdrop of modern and ancient Egypt.
