For years we’ve been hearing that writer/director Joe Cornish and actor John Boyega have been talking about making a sequel to their 2011 alien invasion film Attack the Block (watch it Here). The project was officially announced last year – and now Boyega has revealed to the folks at Collider that he and Cornish have been crafting the story for Attack the Block 2 together.

Boyega said,

The story has actually been presented by myself and Joe Cornish. We’ve collaborated heavily on making a story that makes sense for Moses and the other characters, and the new characters that will be coming up in the sequel too. And then, also, there’s different perspectives in writing it, with Joe having his perspective and me having mine. London has changed so much, in so many different ways, over the years since the first movie. We’re just trying to make...

Exclusive: The Orchard picks up North American rights to Gangster Playboy Legends and sequel.

London sales outfit Av Pictures has inked deals with The Orchard for North American rights to crime duo Gangster Playboy Legends and sequel Gangster Playboys Retribution.

Both films will form part of a new genre label within distributor Orchard, which previously acquired Av’s Comedown.

Sales on Gangster Playboy Legends have previously closed for Australia/Nz (Rialto), Benelux (Premiere TV Distribution), China (Jy Entertainment), France (Marco Polo), Germany (Ksm), Greece (Videorama), Japan (Take Shobo) and Scandinavia (Take One).

Discussions are ongoing with most of the same distributors on the sequel.

Gangster Playboy Legends depicts the rise and fall of the notorious Essex Boys Gang, whilst the sequel is inspired by the subsequent revenge rampage that followed the true life Range Rover Murders.

The ensemble casts include Billy Murray, Alex Esmail, Peter Barrett and Kierston Wareing.

The full list of judges and the lineup of the 2013 Viscera Film Festival have been revealed along with the name of this year's Inspiration Award recipient. It all happens on July 13th at the American Cinematheque’s Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood, California. Read on for the details.

Rapper Kid Cudi moonlights as an actor every now and then, most recently popping up in a regular role on the (sadly) now-defunct HBO series "How To Make It In America" but it looks like he's also a keen cinephile, sampling Joe Cornish's "Attack The Block" on his latest track, a collaboration with producer Dot da Genius.

The lengthily-titled "Dennis, Hook Me Up With Some Of That Whiskey" opens with a quote from John Boyega's Moses ("Kill 'em, kill all dem fings") before sliding in another one from Alex Esmail's Pest about half way through ("That's an alien bruv, believe it!"). We're not sure what the significance of it is (other than a cool reference) with a glance over the lyrics providing no further insight. A short clip of Barack Obama crooning Al Green ("Those guys didn't think I was going to do it...") is also added for good measure.

It's no secret that the Alamo Drafthouse is the best theater chain in the country. Sure, it's small, but the passion they have to create the perfect environment to watch a movie is unparalleled. Case in point, their hugely popular No Texting [1] public service announcements, incredible in-theater food selection, stunning repertory screenings and so much more. As the new year begins, the entire staff of the Drafthouse voted on their favorite films of 2011 and selected /Film as the outlet to exclusively premiere their list. It's extremely eclectic (The Muppets, Beginners and 13 Assassin all made the cut) but you'd be hard pressed to find a better cross section of the best 2011 had to offer. Check it out after the jump. Here's the explanation of the list and how it came together. Members of the Alamo Drafthouse team each submitted their Top 10 films of 2011, which were then aggregated into one master list of spectacular cinema.

In no particular order, these are the stand out films that are worth adding to any video library. The set of criteria is simple: a standout performance by one or more of the first billed actors that can be re-watched time and time again. Their complexity is what defines the film. Also important is the type of chills or thrills the movie offers, and the story being told.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil

Cast: Tyler Labine, Alan Tudyk and Katrina Bowden.

Although this film is technically a 2010 product, it did not reach distribution until the following year. This one, like how some of the victims died in film, skips under the gun by being exceptionally funny with an adorable, luggable, teddy bear performance by Tyler Labine. This product is a better answer to a theatrical version of the Beverly Hillbillies. The clash of cultures is perfectly played up for laughs.

This year brought us hundreds of movies spanning genres of all kinds, many of them being critically acclaimed movies, but many of them being criminally underseen. Having seen many of the films myself, it kind of pains me to put these five movies on this list. These are the five films that were loved by their critic peers but not so much by the public audience.

This list doesn’t have a particular order, its just these movies deserves the attention it didn’t get. Whether it was the timing, promotions (or lack there of), or something else entirely you should do yourself a favor and put this on your netflix queue.

This movie stretches far beyond a comedy or a drama, it’s a heartfelt story about friendship and the lengths one will go to lengthen dying mortality. This all-star cast was perfect for any fan of the movies to watch.

What went wrong? The idea of school aged children squaring off against aliens to thrawt off an invasion seems like a surefire kind of idea. So again, what went wrong with Attack the Block? Part of it is the pacing. There is long stretches where not much of anything happens. Part of it has to do with the fact that Attack the Block never captures the sense of joy, the sense of wonder & awe that is childhood. But a big part of it, has to do with this manfactured feeling that rings throughout all of Attack the Block. The characters say cool things while cool music plays in the...

Every action has a consequence and in every action there is always an equal and opposite reaction. Even though the character of Moses (John Boyega) is at the heart of the events in Attack the Block, the result is an action-terror-style romp à la Battlefield Los Angeles, Akira and Goonies all rolled into one. The music certainly speaks for the generation it is targeted towards, and the look at significances of one's action is what this film is about.

In an age where most films that stand a chance of making an impact at the box-office have already been backed by millions upon millions of dollars, its rare to see low budget features at all, let alone a good one. It remains to be seen whether or not Joe Cornish's Attack the Block will make an impact at the box-office, but it definitely has the makings of a cult classic. His incredibly funny, exciting and inspiring action-horror-comedy features a simple story with performances that go above and beyond most big budget f/x pictures. At times one can feel the budget restraints of the production, yet they are not flaws, just enjoyable quirks that work surprisingly well in service of the experience.

Chicago – Here’s a directorial debut made with such an assured sense of style and craft that one wishes it were more fun. All the ingredients are here for a splendid cult classic: deadpan gags, live-action aliens, a fresh-faced ensemble and R-rated violence all wrapped in the blessings of Edgar Wright and Nick Frost. Yet “Attack the Block” sounds a lot more fun on paper that it is in execution.

For all of its considerable charms, the picture is irrevocably marred by the least likable protagonists in recent memory. The blame cannot be placed on the young actors, who are all game and energetic. It’s the script by first-time feature director Joe Cornish that lets them down. As a cinematic rule of thumb, it’s generally a bad sign when viewers start growing impatient over waiting for the so-called heroes to get killed off.

A low-income London housing project is turned into an intergalactic battleground in the British science-fiction comedy Attack the Block.

Yes, the story is that simple: a teen street gang in South London (Leeon Jones, Simon Howard, John Boyega) is attacking a pretty nurse (Jodie Whittaker) when they’re interrupted by an object falling from the sky and landing in a nearby car. Emerging from the vehicle is a small alien creature, which the gang subsequently kills. Hoping to gain fame and fortune, they take it to a local drug dealer (Nick Frost, Shaun of the Dead) for advice. Unfortunately, all they end up getting is a fresh wave of bigger and angrier aliens, who drop down to Earth for payback and planetary domination.

My initial thoughts on Attack the Block following early trailers and marketing was that the film could well be too limited in its wider appeal, thanks to the very strong regional feel, but that skepticism quickly evaporated in the presence of some serious genre credentials and painstakingly observed generic conventions, as soon as the film got into its swing. On the surface it may look like a grime-infused “Ends” opera, accessible only to those from the areas depicted in the film, but the film is also injected with a great deal of allegorical interest. Within the confines of this straight-up sci-fi thriller, there are messages of criminality, of disenfranchisement and of the hope in personal triumph.

Since its cinematic run of course, events in Britain (and the poorer areas of London) have added a weighty gravitas to the political undertones of the narrative, with the obvious ingrained feelings of disenfranchisement...

This is the Pure Movies review of Attack the Block, directed by Joe Cornish and starring Nick Frost, Jodie Whittaker, Luke Treadaway, John Boyega, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh and Paige Meade. Aliens landing on a South London estate are interesting enough to give new domestic schlock horror, Attack The Block, a moment’s consideration. Coupled with a stoned appearance from Anglo-us success Nick Frost(he of the Pegg-Frost partnership behind Paul and Shaun of the Dead) and Spielberg-backed Joe Cornish of Adam and Joe TV fame is bound to attract even more enthusiasm. But as much as Cornish has his more-than-willing plaudits for his first directorial debut – before they’ve seen a single frame in some respects, for those not in awe of the man or his ‘talents’, does this extraterrestrial battle pitched just down the road have enough alien bite to its bark?...

While the crapfest known as Creature consumed 1,500 screens with about 15 viewers per, the cult hit Attack the Block barely saw the light of day. Heartbreaking when you think about it. Either way this October that wrong will be set right as the flick is finally coming home.

High Def Digest reports that in an early announcement to retailers, Sony has slated Attack the Block for Blu-ray release on October 25th.

This is one of my favorite movies of the year, I had so much fun watching this in theaters and it will be perfect viewing for years to come. That’s an alien bruv, believe it.

Coming out of the streets of South London, Joe Cornish’s Attack the Block is already generating almost universal positive buzz. Having seen the film a total of three times, each time with a different crowd of varying sizes, my worry was the experience of seeing the film would diminish every time. Or did it somehow grow at a rate that most films don’t do today? I could be a bit of an annoying prat but I won’t be like that because I think of all of you like my fam. Attack the Block is, quite simply, my favorite movie of the year. Hands down. You should read more below to see why.

In theaters July 29th, Arrow has a new still from Attack the Block from director Joe Cornish. It stars Nick Frost, along with Jodie Whittaker, John Boyega, Alex Esmail, Franz Drameh, Leeon Jones, Simon Howard, Luke Treadaway and Jumayn Hunter and was produced by Edgar Wright.

Trainee nurse Sam is walking home to her flat in a scary South London tower block when she’s robbed by a gang of masked, hooded youths. She’s saved when the gang are distracted by a bright meteorite, which falls from the sky and hits a nearby parked car. Sam flees, just before the gang are attacked by a small alien creature that leaps from the wreckage. The gang chase the creature and kill it, dragging its ghoulish carcass to the top of the block, which they treat as their territory.

While Sam and the police hunt for the gang, a second wave of meteors falls.

At this year's Comic Con, I got the chance to catch the final free screening of Joe Cornish's Attack the Block. Ever since the film premiered at SXSW in March, Attack the Block has been touring around the country, with free screenings in pretty much all major cities in the Us.  There last stop was San Diego, as they presented the final screening of the film for a group of rabid Comic Con fans.  The buzz for the film has been growing more and more with each passing screening and finally, after three months of free screenings, Screen Gems is releasing the film in limited release in eight cities across the country.  Is it worth your money?  We weigh in after the jump.

If there was one department in which J.J. Abrams. Super 8 was sorely lacking . outside of a more satisfying ending . it was the .fun factor.. While the scenes where the group of nascent filmmakers were trying to make their monster movie was light-hearted and enjoyable, too much focus was put on the horror/sci-fi elements of the story, which made the film thrilling, but decidedly less fun.
