If you’re anything like this TV Fanatic, you likely asked yourself, “How could a long-standing franchise like NCIS possibly go back in time? What is there left to tell in NCIS: Origins?”
The answer is an astounding amount! I was not prepared for that deep dive into the past. This show wasted no time jumping right into a case of love and drugs.
NCIS: Origins takes audiences into a past that feels as real and relevant as any story told in modern-day settings. The series boasts a cast as talented as they are young and attractive.
(Sonja Flemming/CBS)
Despite the cookie-cutter procedural format, CBS’s NCIS: Origins has complex characters and an intricate story that speaks to the years of fantastic writing and plotting the franchise is known for.

Spoiler Alert: The following interview contains spoilers from “We’re in the Memory-Making Business,” the season finale of “Bad Monkey” now streaming on Apple TV+.
The case is closed on the first season of Apple TV+’s series “Bad Monkey,” the Florida Keys-set comedic crime series based on the Carl Hiaasen novel of the same name. And while more than a few characters didn’t make it out alive, the good guys prevailed.
Among the victors was suspended detective-turned-health inspector Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), who, as he sat looking out at the ocean during the season’s final moments, seemed to have found a sense of peace — even if he was still suspended, and his romance with Dr. Rosa Campesino (Natalie Martinez) didn’t fall into place as he would have liked.

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains spoilers for Season 1 of “Bad Monkey,” including its ending.]
The finale of Apple TV+’s “Bad Monkey” kicked off with a shock: The Dragon Queen is dead. The opening moments showed the rest of last week’s confrontation between Gracie (Jodie Turner-Smith) and Eve (Meredith Hagner), with Eve shoving her, and a tree branch piercing through her chest, killing her.
“The Dragon Queen was a much different character in the book,” show writer and executive producer Matt Tarses explained to IndieWire. “She was an old woman and she was sort of pretty much evil;, didn’t have any redemptive qualities. And so early on, we wanted to make that character more nuanced. We made her younger, we gave her this kind of consciousness of a grandmother, in Ya-Ya. I love that character, and I love what Jodie Turner-Smith did with that stuff.”

Spoiler Alert: The story includes details about Episode 10 of Apple TV+’s Bad Monkey.
Season 1 of Bill Lawrence’s Apple TV+ crime series Bad Monkey, based on Carl Hiaasen’s novel, wrapped its run with a jam-packed finale that saw the demise of three main characters. Gracie, aka the Dragon Queen (Jodie Turner-Smith), died at the hands of Eve (Meredith Hagner), who also pushed her wheelchair-bound husband Nick (Rob Delaney) into the ocean. As the show continued to weave magic into reality, the Dragon Queen’s dying wish to Eve, “I hope you choke … on your lies,” basically came true as Eve choked on a baby carrot and then was pulled by an invisible force to the edge as she jumped off a building to her death after escaping to Portugal.

Everyone knows Apple TV+ for Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, and Severance. There have been a few other popular TV shows sprinkled in over the last few years. Presumed Innocent starring Jake Gyllenhaal had some good buzz recently. Despite Apple TV+’s substantial investment into the TV business, it’s still looking for mainstream hits.
And, let me be clear. I am a fan of Apple TV+. I appreciate how many TV shows with huge stars the streamer is cranking out these days, but it’s just so odd that almost no one is talking about these great shows!

For Bill Lawrence and Vince Vaughn, “Bad Monkey” was more than just another show. It was a passion project fueled by an author they both love, Carl Hiaasen.
“Without being a dork, he was so influential for me as a storyteller. I started reading his books when I was a teenager,” Bill Lawrence, the developer and executive producer behind the Apple TV+ original, told TheWrap.
Lawrence has a long history with Florida, the setting behind Hiaasen’s quip-filled and twisted literary thrillers. His parents currently live there, and his aunts and uncles are all fishing guides along the St. Johns River. Given that background and Lawrence’s own sense of humor, it’s only natural he would connect with one of the bestselling novelists in Florida, an author who’s known for his dark comedy as much as his grisly murder mysteries.

The first two episodes of Bad Monkey are now streaming on Apple TV+ and give audiences much to unpack. Let’s recap by highlighting the key events. Spoilers ahead!
Bad Monkey’s premiere episode gets right down to business. The severed arm is found by an immature fisher and the authorities at Key West, Florida, want to keep this as underwraps to avoid media attention and panic from tourists. The arm is handed over to Detective Ro (John Ortiz), who takes it to Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), a suspended detective down on his luck. You see, Yancy had an affair with Bonnie (Michelle Monaghan) and things didn’t go well when Bonnie’s husband caught them together.
An angry Yancy decided the best thing to do is push Bonnie’s husband, who was minding his own business sitting in his golf cart, into the ocean…in front of dozens of witnesses.

Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn) is your dad’s ideal protagonist. His happy place is his front yard, with his butt wearing a groove in an Adirondack chair and a local beer keeping his hand from overheating. That his lawn faces the ocean is a nice bonus, and that his endless blue view is being impeded by a monstrous yellow mansion next door, well, that’s his primary complaint. You see, Yancy doesn’t need much. A view, a drink, and a comfy spot to appreciate them both — that’s bliss. But, aside from the hideous remodel going on next door, Yancy’s stress stems from a love/hate relationship with his job. On the one hand, being a detective feeds his ingrained need for justice — he just wants things to be fair, for everyone to get along, and for those who get in the way of the world’s good...

How Vince Vaughn and Bill Lawrence’s 25-Year Friendship Led to the Apple TV+ Cop Comedy ‘Bad Monkey’
Vince Vaughn first met Bill Lawrence more than 25 years ago, so when cop comedy “Bad Monkey” came around, the actor jumped at the opportunity to finally work together.
“We just laughed a lot,” Vaughn told Variety at the Apple TV+ show’s premiere on Monday night. About collaborating with the “Spin City” and “Ted Lasso” hitmaker, Vaughn added: “He’s got such good ideas. He welcomes ideas. It was easy.”
It’s hardly a surprise things worked out so well, since Lawrence has made a bit of a habit of working with friends and family. At this stage in his career, “it’s just so fun to work with the people you want to spend time with,” he said, as his daughter, singer-songwriter Charlotte Lawrence, walked past him on the sand-colored carpet outside the Hammer Museum in Westwood.
Lawrence was initially apprehensive about casting her in the show, though he knew she had the chops.

Bad Monkey isn’t just the title of Vince Vaughn’s new Apple TV+ series; the phrase could also apply to his primate scene partner, according to the actor.
Crystal the Monkey — who has more than 30 credits to her name, including The Hangover Part II and Night at the Museum — plays the titular monkey in the show, which is adapted from Carl Hiaasen’s 2013 book of the same name. It follows a former Miami detective Andrew Yancy (Vaughn) who is demoted to a restaurant inspector in the Florida Keys; an unusual new case might get him back in the department if he can get past an odd cast of characters and one monkey.
Though Vaughn admitted Crystal is “a talented monkey,” he jokingly told The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s Los Angeles premiere on Monday, “I’ll never work with that one again. Talk about sucking up all the oxygen on a set,...

The hero wanders through his scenes, casually purposeful. His shirts fit like they were tailored for him, even though nothing about his particular kind of attractiveness suggests that he’s fussed over it. He keeps up a steady, teasing patter; the characters who aren’t his friends reveal themselves in their inability to keep up with him. When he finds himself in mortal danger, he quickly shakes it off. When a sexy lady crosses his path, he flirts exactly enough to intrigue her. What makes him cool, above all, is that we can tell coolness isn’t something he’s ever bothered to think about: his every move seems effortless. But if leading a show like Bad Monkey really were as easy as Vince Vaughn makes it look, everyone would do it.

The Florida Keys is paradise on earth. As long as you ignore the crime, the corruption, the eccentric locals and some issues involving a pet monkey in a mini diaper. Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), a detective on suspension due to an unfortunate incident involving his girlfriend’s husband, is tasked with dumping the limb. He senses that not all right is in this case, and soon he finds himself on the hunt for a possible murderer. Cue the treacherous family members, a gorgeous coroner assistant, a real estate scheme in the Caribbean, voodoo queens and, yes, one misbehaving primate.
Apple TV+’s “Bad Monkey” brings together TV maven Bill Lawrence of “Scrubs” and “Ted Lasso” fame and Carl Hiaasen, perhaps the most beloved comedy crime writer in America.

Vince Vaughn knows who he is by now. He excels at playing the motormouthed scamp, a role he’s perfected over the past three decades in big-screen comedies like Swingers and Wedding Crashers. (The less said about his ill-advised detour to play a somber crime boss in the misfire that was Season 2 of True Detective, the better.) He’s back in his wheelhouse here, and in fine form, as the star of the new Apple TV+ mystery comedy Bad Monkey, premiering this Wednesday. (I’ve seen the first three episodes.) It’s a sleazy, sweaty Florida noir with a cast...

Despite its familiar trope of a dismissed police detective trying to solve a crime he shouldn’t be anywhere near, “Bad Monkey” on Apple TV+ hits its marks and largely nails its comedic tone. Vince Vaughn, staring as Andrew Yancy, drew me in initially but it’s the show’s supporting cast that manages to keep the show afloat for its 10-episode run. The show — based on Carl Hiaasen’s 2013 novel of the same name — is witty and good for at least a few laugh-out-loud moments. Fans of “Shrinking” and “Ted Lasso,” also on Apple TV+, shouldn’t hesitate to jump into the warm Florida Keys’ water with “Bad Monkey” when the series premieres on Wednesday, Aug. 14.

Review: The last time Vince Vaughn starred in a mystery series for television, the result was the divisive second season of True Detective. Playing a fully dramatic role was nothing new for the versatile Vaughn, but the mixed reception pushed the actor back to the big screen. It’s been nearly 30 years since Vince Vaughn first exploded onto movie screens as Trent, the slick, confident best friend to Jon Favreau’s Mikey in Swingers, who was forever convinced that a trip to Las Vegas could solve any emotional problem. In the decades since, Vaughn has never lost that irrepressible presence, though some projects have taken better advantage of those gifts than others. Age comes for all of us, so it seems appropriate that in his latest role, as Florida cop Andrew Yancy in Apple’s Bad Monkey,...

Bad Monkey brings Carl Hiaasen’s novel of the same name to the screen. Known for biting satires of Florida life, Hiaasen’s works blend darkness and humor. This limited series does justice to that tone with its offbeat characters and scenery.
Former police detective Andrew Yancy lives a simpler life now as a restaurant inspector in the Florida Keys. But his curiosity gets the better of him when a severed arm washes ashore. Yancy pairs up with medical examiner Rosa Campesino to investigate what really happened. Their search leads beyond the Keys to the Bahamas, uncovering corruption threatening a small island.
Vince Vaughn captures Yancy’s charm and drive perfectly. You believe this flawed man just wants the truth, even if it costs him. Natalie Martinez is a worthy foil as the no-nonsense Rosa, their banter rich with chemistry. In the Bahamas, Neville Stafford fights for his home, brought to life by Ronald Peet.

To lift a title from kids’ novelist Wilson Rawls, this has become the Summer of the Monkeys.
Before we get to HBO’s Chimp Crazy and Netflix’s Secret Lives of Orangutans, devotees of the simian arts will be treated to Apple TV+’s Bad Monkey, a Carl Hiaasen adaptation from the streamer’s comedy patron saint, Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Shrinking).
Contrary to the show and novel’s name, the eponymous monkey is not, in fact, bad. Played by veteran animal thespian Crystal — you know her from Community, The Fabelmans and more — she is, in fact, quite good, reliable for reactive cutaways or wild, furry hijinks. She (actually, Crystal is playing a character who seems to identify as male, but we are not going down the path of monkey pronouns here) doesn’t always feel particularly connected to the plot of Bad Monkey, but it’s charming and fun just to have her around.

Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), the big-hearted, fast-talking cop at the center of Bad Monkey, has a way of stumbling into trouble. Based on Carl Hiassen’s 2013 bestselling novel of the same name, the series begins with a severed arm turning up in a tourist’s sport-fishing catch off the Florida Keys. Yancy’s boss, Sheriff Sonny Summers (Todd Allen Durkin), wants to avoid the hassle of an investigation and offers Yancy—who’s been suspended for assaulting the husband of his sometime girlfriend, Bonnie (Michelle Monaghan)—a deal: If he wants his badge back, he must make the arm (and the case) disappear.
The plan is upended when a suspicious woman named Eve Stripling (Meredith Hagner) turns up, tearfully claiming that the arm belongs to her late husband. Yancy’s curiosity is piqued, and what follows is a multi-plot romp involving insurance fraud, illegal property development in the Bahamas, and...

Bill Lawrence and Jason Segel’s Shrinking returns for season 2 on Apple TV in October, and here are the details.
According to Deadline, Apple has confirmed that the Shrinking season 2 will begin on the 15th October.
Bill Lawrence is probably best known for creating Scrubs, the wonderful hospital sitcom which ran for nine seasons from 2002 to 2009. It showcased Lawrence’s skill in weaving incredible pathos through a show crammed with jokes – My Lunch from season 5 may just be one of the best examples of this in any sitcom – and he has only gone from strength to strengh.
After six seasons of Cougar Town starring Courtney Cox, he co-created Ted Lasso with Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt, which soon became a global phenomenon due to its mix of hope, kindness and uncynical humour.
That brings us to Shrinking, which he co-created with Jason Segel and Ted Lasso star Brett Goldstein.

Bad Monkey, Bill Lawrence’s adaptation of the Carl Hiaasen 2013 novel of the same thing and a longtime passion project for the power producer, is finally set to premiere. Having firmed up plans for its Aug. 14 release, Apple TV+ dropped the first trailer for the project on Wednesday.
The Florida-set dramedy mystery tells the story of Andrew Yancy (Vince Vaughn), a former Miami P.D. detective whose transfer to the Keys quickly resulted in him getting bounced from the force entirely to work as a health inspector. When a privileged tourist hooks a human arm on a fishing trip, Yancy is drawn into a murder mystery whose resolution he thinks might earn back his badge.
Filling out the comically large ensemble of oddball characters related to the case are L. Scott Caldwell, Rob Delaney, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, Alex Moffat , Michelle Monaghan, Ronald Peet and a capuchin playing the titular primate.

The Stephen King TV adaptations of the 90s have their legion of fans despite the varying qualities. The prequel film we have all been waiting for is finally here and I am really happy to say that it is as brilliant and bombastic as the original film. Obviously, we are talking about Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the prequel to George Miller‘s 2015 Mad Max: Fury Road. Directed by Miller from a screenplay by Nico Lathouris and Miller, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga follows the story of a young Furiosa as she is taken from Green Place of Many Mothers and tries to survive in the wasteland while trying to get back home but the war between great biker horde’s warlord Dementus and Immortan Joe makes it harder. Replacing Charlize Theron from Fury Road, Anya Taylor-Joy takes over the role of Furiosa in the prequel film and it also stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Burke, Lachy Hulme, John Howard, Angus Sampson, and Nathan Jones.
