Gene is an Emmy Award-winning producer, filmmaker and actor. He started his career in the entertainment industry as an actor in a bit role in the film Bottle Rocket by Wes Anderson.
His narrative and documentary films have played over 100 film festivals around the world from Anchorage to Berlin and feature many celebrated actors including Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman, Ethan Hawke, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Peter Sarsgaard, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Denis O'Hare, Olympia Dukakis, Peri Gilpin, Reed Birney, Paul Benjamin, and Lorelei Linklater.
Gene is an Executive Producer of the documentary film American Symphony about Grammy-winning musician Jon Batiste and writer Suleika Jaouad. It premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and is directed by Matthew Heineman. The film is produced by Michelle and Barack Obama's production company Higher Ground. American Symphony is the winner of multiple Critics Choice awards.
Gene is also a producer of the new Disney+ and National Geographic TV series Photographer with Academy Award winners Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. It is directed by Chai Vasarhelyi, Jimmy Chin, Pagan Harleman, Sam Pollard, Crystal Kayiza, Rita Baghdadi and Marshall Curry. The six-part series features Dan Winters, Paul Nicklen, Cristina Mittermeier, Anand Varma, Krystle Wright, Muhammed Muheisen and Campbell Addy.
In 2021, Gene produced 10 episodes of the TV series Edge of the Unknown with Jimmy Chin for National Geographic and Disney+. The series featured elite adventure athletes Alex Honnold, Jimmy Chin, Justine Dupont, Conrad Anker, Travis Rice, Angel Collinson, Gerd Serrasolses, Sarah McNair-Landry, Will Gadd and Ben Stookesberry.
Gene was a Co-Producer on the Emmy Award-winning film The First Wave, a documentary directed by Academy Award nominee Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land, Tiger, Retrograde) for Nat Geo, Participant, and Neon released on Hulu. For the film, Gene spent hundreds of hours embedded in New York City's ICUs while the city was the epicenter of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The First Wave won Emmy awards for Best Documentary, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing.
Last year Gene produced the short documentary When a Rocket Sits on the Launch Pad which had its World Premiere at the Berlinale in 2023.
Gene has acted in dozens of plays in New York City and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He has performed in plays by John Patrick Shanley, Neil Labute, Sheila Callaghan, and Barbara Dana.
