In Alice Lowe’s Timestalker, in cinemas today, our put-upon heroine isn’t the luckiest in love.

After chasing the same scoundrel across 400 years and taking multiple sharp instruments to the head, you’d have thought Lowe’s Agnes would have learnt her lesson. Alas, the more Aneurin Barnard’s rogue signals his disinterest (usually by running away immediately after her grisly demise), the more she’s convinced he’s the man for her. This is because, though Barnard’s character lives multiple lives as a heretic, a highwayman and a heartthrob, the greatest trick the film pulls is the reveal that Agnes herself isn’t very nice.

Aptly, Timestalker arrives a week after Joker: Folie à Deux told the story of a similar character at the other end of the budgetary spectrum.

Vertigo Releasing has revealed the trailer for Alice Lowe’s romantic comedy ‘Timestalker.’

The movie follows hapless heroine Agnes (Alice Lowe) through time as she repeatedly falls for the wrong guy, dies a grim death, gets reincarnated a century later, before meeting him again and starting the cycle anew.

Agnes’ only hope in avoiding this violent fate is by finally reaching spiritual enlightenment; but how can she ever wise up when she’s destined to be a fool for love? Some lessons are just too hard to learn in one lifetime.

There aren’t many television shows that could, in the matter of only a few episodes, feature a monster made of boogers that terrorizes babies, a killer drag queen defeated by the power of music (with a little help from The Beatles) and a pointless religious war catalyzed by a capitalist algorithm.

But, not all shows are Doctor Who.

And since Disney+ acquired the long-running BBC science-fiction show, the Time Lord — now played by Ncuti Gatwa — in the quintessentially British show remains as quirky as ever.

The latest episode, penned by showrunner Russell T Davies, continues its unpredictable streak by donning the guise of folk-horror in an eerie decade-spanning epic that will have Whovians tapping their keyboards in forums for years to come.

Exclusive: Blackwater Pictures, the British indie production company behind the buzzy biopic about the life of veteran Snooker player Jimmy White, has set up what they describe as a “multi-million-pound” fund to support commercially-minded independent British films.

Helmed by Kevin Harvey and Antoine Dixon-Bellot, Blackwater Pictures will commit to supporting five projects as part of a slate focused on emerging directors. The fund will prioritize “commercial independent British films,” organizers said today.

The fund is being managed in collaboration with BAFTA-nominated producer Tiernan Hanby (The Karman Line, Summit Fever, Heavyweight) of Pin Sharp Pictures and Simon Marriott of development & production company Shout Loud Creative. Money for the fund was raised through private equity and personal funds.

The Doctor Who simultaneous global premiere arrives in May, and the episode titles for the season have now been revealed.

In addition, another guest star has been added to the cast. In the Julie Anne Robinson directed Space Babies, Golda Rosheuvel (Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story) joins Doctor Who as Jocelyn.

“It’s been amazing to see the whole world appreciate Golda’s talents, because of Bridgerton, and it’s been an absolute joy to invite her to Cardiff to help launch Ncuti and Millie’s first season,” said Russell T Davies, the Doctor Who showrunner.

Allons-y, Whovians! As promised, Disney+ wrapped up last week with the first official trailer for the upcoming new season of “Doctor Who,” starring Ncuti Gatwa as the recently regenerated Fifteenth Doctor.

In wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey fashion, the long-running sci-fi series will start back at Series 1 for its new era, which will see the Fifteenth Doctor and companion Ruby Sunday (played by Millie Gibson) travel across time and space, from Regency-era England to war-torn future worlds.

Exclusive: Actor Steven Waddington (The Imitation Game) has penned a screenplay that he will direct based on the life of veteran Snooker player Jimmy White, with Aneurin Barnard (Dunkirk) and Ray Winstone (Sexy Beast) signed on to star.

Barnard — best known for his breakout in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk but also has credits such as The Goldfinch and the BBC’s popular 2016 War & Peace adaptation — will play White in the pic. Producers told us the film will condense the life and career of the colorful six-time Snooker World Championship finalist into “one crazy night” during which he “is forced to confront his darker side.”

Let it rip! While currently in production for its third season, the multi-Emmy Award-winning series FX series “The Bear” was reportedly quietly renewed last week for a Season 4 with plans to film both seasons back to back.

While FX has yet to officially confirm (and it is unclear whether Season 4 will be the series’ last), the network gave the series its Season 3 renewal back in November 2023, and since then, the series, which streams on Hulu, has gone on to win multiple Primetime Emmy Awards and Golden Globes for first and second seasons, respectively, including this year’s Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy statuette.

If you've been patiently waiting to hear when Doctor Who will return to screens (or wishing you had a Tardis so you could just whizz forward in time and watch the new series anyway), prepare to be pleased. The Beeb and Disney+ have revealed that the first full series featuring Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor will kick off in May.

Specially, for those in the UK, at midnight on Saturday 11 May, when two episodes of the new run featuring Gatwa and Millie Gibson's Ruby Sunday will land on the iPlayer ahead of their airing on that evening on BBC One.

Viewers outside Britain will see the show launch on Disney+ simultaneously. One episode will follow weekly at the same time around the world.

We can expect the usual dashing around time and space, including on adventures to unknown lands, the Regency era in England, outer space worlds, and the sixties.

You can opt to watch the first two episode of the series on BBC iPlayer at midnight or wait until Saturday evening to watch them on BBC One, right before the Eurovision finale. Now that’s a wild Saturday night, if you ask me.

The BBC and Disney+ will launch the latest season of the classic sci-fi – the first since the Disney streamer came on board – simultaneously around the world.

The show, which stars Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor with Millie Gibson as his companion Ruby Sunday, will launch on Disney+ in the U.S. and internationally on Friday May 10 at 7pm Et.

This is the same time that the show will drop on the BBC’s streaming service iPlayer before it gets its linear airing later on Saturday, May 11. It follows a series of specials that premiered at the end of last year.

The move will sate British fans of the show, who were concerned that viewers in other parts of the world would get to watch it before they did.

Love never dies, but a lot of people do in Alice Lowe’s gloriously bloody valentine to the romantic comedy. Spanning so much time that it practically goes back to the beginning of it, Timestalker is an ambitious project that not only works, it coheres in a way that cements Lowe as a genuine and quite visionary comedic talent. It recalls classic Monty Python — it’s often very, very stupid and the same time very, very clever — but most of all it’s an idea of what might have been if that all-male team had ever had a woman or two in its core lineup.

Even in 1688, there were fuckboys. Such is the first and best lesson of Alice Lowe’s “Timestalker,” even if it’s one our leading lady Agnes has to learn over and over and over and over. That’s the gimmick of Lowe’s second feature film — a winning follow-up to her bloody good 2016 feature directorial debut “Prevenge” — which is billed as a “reincarnation rom com.” Mostly, the feature serves as a stellar reminder of the elasticity of genre and Lowe’s ability to stretch any apparent limits however she sees fit.

Consider Lowe’s sophomore film a canny, slightly sweeter companion to Bertrand Bonello’s similarly plotted “The Beast”: Both films follow a pair of star-crossed lovers who continue to meet in different times, places, and stations, only to fuck it up each time. In Lowe’s version, however, her Agnes is the only one aware of what’s actually unspooling here.

Seven years in the making, spanning centuries in the telling, Alice Lowe’s latest feature, Timestalker, is a strange beast. A dark comedy, a romance through the ages, a violent sci-fi, and an existential musing on the self, it’s an ambitious romp dressed in spandex and crinoline.

“When you make an independent film, you know there’s a chance you may never make one again,” says Lowe. “Any time one happens, it’s like a miracle. And I really just thought, God, if this was the last film that I ever get to make, what would I want to put in it? It’s like my gravestone in a film.”

Just fun.” That was the offer the Fifteenth Doctor made to Ruby Sunday in the Doctor Who series 14 trailer. ‘And’, he should probably have added, ‘quite a lot of mortal peril,’ – but when has the Doctor ever been upfront with companions about the not-insignificant dangers of travelling in time and space? He probably doesn’t even fill in a risk assessment.
