Production is officially underway for Obsessed, a new, Broadway-bound Diane Warren bio-musical: Producers announced today that licensing deals are set for songs that will be featured in the score, including the Taylor Swift hit “Say Don’t Go.”
A successful developmental workshop was held in New York City last year, directed by three-time Tony Award-winner Kathleen Marshall with a book by two-time Tony winner Joe Dipietro. Michael Cohl and Irit TenHengel, who announced the licensing deals today, formed a partnership to produce the musical on Broadway.
A full production schedule, casting and additional creative team will be announced soon.
Although a list of songs to be included in the musical was not released, producers said they secured rights to Warren-penned songs made famous by, in addition to Swift, Beyonce, Cher, Aerosmith, Toni Braxton, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga and more.

The stage show, of which a filmed version was shown on Netflix, won five awards at this year’s Golden Raspberries, including worst picture, worst actress for Jeanna de Waal in the title role, worst director, worst supporting actress and worst screenplay. It had been nominated in nine categories altogether.
Netlix streamed a filmed version of the stage show before it debuted on Broadway, without a live audience due to theaters being closed at a time of coronavirus restrictions. Results for the 42nd Razzie Awards are in — and if you had anything to do with “Diana: The Musical,” you might want to go back to bed.
The big, fat Broadway bomb about the Princess of Wales beamed into your living room courtesy of Netflix was this year’s big Razzie “winner,” taking home five of what the group calls its “un-coveted … tacky, gold-spray-painted statuettes.”
The streaming version of the stage musical bagged Worst Picture, Worst Actress (Jeanna de Waal), Worst Supporting Actress, Worst Director (Christopher Ashley) and Worst Screenplay. The group pointed out how richly the “Diana” script deserved the honor for “featuring some of the year’s most ridiculed dialogue and lyrics — Including rhyming ‘Camilla’ with both ‘Manila’ and ‘Godzilla.'”

In a year where the Kristen Stewart-led Spencer earned its share of awards buzz comes word that another project about the late Princess Diana is the leading candidate for the anti-Oscars. Diana, the Musical, the filmed version of the ill-fated Broadway show, took a final bow with nine nominations for the 42nd annual Razzie Awards revealed today.
The show “scored” nine noms for the 2022 Golden Raspberries spanning nearly all of the categories, including Worst Picture, Actress, Actor, Director and Screenplay. As is tradition, the Golden Raspberry Awards announced their contenders on the eve of the Oscar nominations. The Razzies, now in their 42nd year, are a tongue-in-cheek ceremony that “honor” the worst films of the year. Scroll down for the full list of nominees in all 10 Razzie Awards categories ranging from Worst Picture to Worst Remake, Rip-Off, or Sequel. Unique to this year is a category dedicated to Bruce Willis and his eight performances in pictures last year.
Leading the 2022 Razzie Awards nominations roster is the Netflix version of the Broadway flop “Diana: The Musical” with nine bids. Tied with five apiece are “Karen” and “The Woman in the Window.” Each of these ill-conceived movies counts a Worst Picture nomination among its haul. Joining them in that race are the sequel “Space Jam: A New Legacy” and the sci-fi flick “Infinite.”
As usual, “winners” will be decided by Razzie members.

The Razzie Awards nominations recognizing the worst “crap streaming, beaming and steaming from our various screens and devices” of 2021 — as the group put it — have been announced, with LeBron James, “Diana: The Musical,” Amy Adams and Bruce Willis topping the heap.
“Here’s a look at what we saw,” the organization said in a press release. “The excruciating musicals, thrill-free thriller rip-offs, a nearly 2 hour product placement flick, and more Bruce Willis than any starving viewer could stomach. In other words, 2021 did not fail the Razzies!”
With Oscar nominations coming out on Tuesday morning, the Academy Award’s snarky counterpart, the Golden Raspberry Awards (aka the Razzies) followed suit as they do every year at this time acknowledging the superior work – or, actually, the inferior work – coming out of the entertainment industry.

Diana, Princess of Wales has been portrayed in no shortage of high profile works of fiction this past year, from her introduction on the fourth season of Netflix’s “The Crown” to Pablo Larraín’s new film “Spencer,” and now a new Broadway musical. Diana, The Musical begins its Act II with the shirtless, well-toned actor portraying the princess’ studly consort James Hewitt doing his best Urban Cowboy riding-the-bull impression, much to the dirty-dancing delight of the smitten royal.
Finally, you think, Diana has fully embraced itself, director Christopher Ashley has rediscovered the campy aesthetic that served him so well from Jeffrey to The Rocky Horror Show and hope may not be entirely lost. But then the pink-bedecked romance novelist Barbara Cartland (don’t ask) stops the action to announce that she just made up that steamy bit, and the ripped stable boy covers up his abs and Diana sinks back to its high-decibel mediocrity.
By now you’ve probably read, heard or seen for yourself, via Netflix, just how deliciously bad Diana is, but the truth isn’t quite so much fun. Diana, opening tonight on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre, is not a so-bad-it’s-good disaster.

Nearly a quarter-century ago, Princess Diana died trying to out-race a swarm of paparazzi. Though many blamed the media for that tragedy, the tabloidification of her life story continues to this day, this time with that most bloated form of homage: the Broadway musical.
Filmed in an empty theater last fall but bursting with the kind of broad, feel-good energy that typically packs the house with tourists in non-covid times, “Diana: The Musical” brings “the people’s princess” directly to the people, in their homes, all but canonizing Diana as a feminist icon and saint in the process. With music by Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan and lyrics co-written by Bryan and book writer Joe Dipietro (the duo behind 2010 Tony winner “Memphis”), the project rides a fresh wave of Diana-mania: a kitsch stage tribute to balance the more critical/cynical takes still popping like so many flashbulbs around the late icon.

Among other goals, many of the letters urge the administration to create a Department and Secretary of Arts & Culture.
Organized by the non-partisan grassroots coalition Be An #ArtsHero in partnership with The Dramatists Guild of America, the “Dear Mr. President and Madam Vice President” campaign asserts that “the Arts are vital to our nation’s soul and our collective humanity, as well as being an essential driver of the economy.”
Among those writing letters: Jeremy O. Harris (Slave Play), Anaïs Mitchell (Hadestown), Heidi Schreck (What The Constitution Means To Me) as well as V (formerly Eve Ensler), Craig Lucas, Theresa Rebeck, Sarah Ruhl, Marsha Norman, Lynn Ahrens, Zakiyyah Alexander, Jaclyn Backhaus, Bekah Brunstetter, Carla Ching, Vichet Chum, Paul Downs Colaizzo,...

Princess Diana‘s story will soon open on Broadway.
Diana: A True Musical Story released a first look at the key art for the highly-anticipated musical, using the late princess’s recognizable eyes to draw people in. The art features the outline of the upper half of Diana’s face, with a side-eye pose giving it a more mysterious look.
Set in 1981, the musical follows Diana as she prepares to marry into the royal family. The show also explores the aftermath of that marriage, from her husband’s highly publicized affair with Camilla Parker Bowles to her relationship with the press.

Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan was still a teenager when Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles in 1981, and he remembers feeling captivated by the extravagant royal wedding. When Princess Diana died in a freak car crash, spurred on by paparazzi, in 1997, he was horrified. “When she died, that was very impactful,” he says, on a lunch break from work-shopping the piece, with musicians playing behind him. “Especially the paparazzi that chased her into that, and her getting killed by the press, it’s terrible. It’s awful.”

It has been over a year since the previous production of The Toxic Avenger The Musical in London, but the opening night for the West End debut last night proved that it was worth the wait. Composed by Memphis writer Joe Dipietro and Bon Jovi keyboard/vocalist David Bryan, the musical encompasses the tongue in cheek element of Lloyd Kaufmans; original film The Toxic Avenger (1984), whilst adding their own unique take on the story.

I know you have just come back from the Cannes festival, where you premiered Return To Nuke ‘Em High Vol. 2 (2017). Can you tell me what your experience was like in Cannes this year?
It’s getting more and more difficult at the Cannes film festival for independent movie artists to do publicity, unless they have the hundred thousand dollar posters or the money for the big party that worships the shrine of money and jewellery and fashion. Cannes is more about the jewellery and fashion than it is about movies. It’s clear the Cannes film festival does not want any independent movie there that is not part of the elite, that’s not part of the club, that is not part of the very refined fascist mentality. I think they show good movies, but if those good movies are not in with the club, forget it. Troma is famous.

I remember growing up when the real super heroes wore tutu’s and carried a mop. This may sound strange to some people, but I can assure you this wasn’t a weird childhood fantasy, I am talking about the original avenger Toxie, in The Toxic Avenger (1984). I have enjoyed the continuing story of ‘The Toxic Avenger’ which includes 3 sequels and a children’s cartoon, so when I heard that they would be continuing the story with a new rock musical I was eager to check it out.
I originally saw the musical version of The Toxic Avenger during a limited run at the Southwark Playhouse in 2016 and it was one of the best musicals I have seen. The show is in keeping with the dark violent humour of the original films and had me laughing throughout. The fact it is a musical may not appeal to everyone, but Toxie...

Following a sold-out UK premiere at Southwark Playhouse where it received six Off West End Award nominations including Best New Musical, cult rock musical The Toxic Avenger is transferring to the Arts Theatre (just down the road from Orbital Comics, making this a great nerdy day out) for a strictly limited season; and Nerdly will [hopefully] be there for the first Saturday matinee – after all, how could we miss out on seeing one of our favourite franchises turned into a musical? It worked for Evil Dead (which we saw years ago in Toronto) so we’re looking forward to seeing how Toxie comes across on stage!

Toxie, a mutant freak with superhuman strength and a supersized heart is out to save New Jersey, end global warming and win the heart of his beloved. Laugh, scream and sing as Toxie rocks the house and saves the day.

Despite its title, the Nov. 9 “Make Believe On Broadway” gala at the St. James Theatre in New York City helped raise awareness for a cause that is anything but make believe. Honoring Tony Award winner Alan Cumming and Morgan Stanley Clo Eric Grossman, the 15th annual event was presented by Only Make Believe, an organization that brings interactive theater to chronically ill children in need. The non-profit was founded by Dena Hammerstein (pictured above with Cumming) and has served over 35,000 children since 1999, sending working performers to over 55 hospitals and care facilities in NYC and Washington, D.C. The most shocking thing about Joe Dipietro’s “Clever Little Lies,” which opened Monday at Off Broadway’s Westside Theatre, is that here’s a new comedy with no shock value. Current stage hits “Hand to God” and “Barbecue” derive much of their humor from, respectively, severe mental illness and severe drug addiction. And at the movies, the Farrelly brothers and their offspring gross us out on a regular basis with scatology and other references to bodily fluids and functions. Dipietro is so clean — except for the occasional F-bomb — that it’s refreshing. In 2015, a comedy about marital infidelity qualifies as clean even when.

The voice of Marlo Thomas, so cavernously amplified it sounds as if it’s coming from a secret vault at an undisclosed location outside of Marlo Thomas, expertly sets up a joke: “If you had told Jane Austen that someday her epic masterpiece would be read by people on their telephone, she would’ve said, well — ” “What’s a telephone?” cackles a woman behind me.There are many things we might mean when we say a play resembles a sitcom, but one good field identification is an audience that can anticipate the punchlines and then deliver better ones than the playwright. (The script’s version is “she wouldn’t have said anything, there were no telephones.”) This keeps happening in Clever Little Lies, the cozy and irksome new comedy by Joe Dipietro now at the Westside Theatre. Thomas plays Alice, a housewife-turned-bookseller bitterly disappointed that her customers want Dickens coffee mugs instead of Dickens.
