Those teen spies, they grow up so fast! “This show means so much to me. I’ve pretty much grown up — me and Brenock and Marli — we’ve grown up doing it,” agrees Otto Farrant of his Alex Rider experience. He’s not kidding. Along with aforementioned costars Brenock O’Connor and Marli Siu, who play his junior James Bond’s best pals and sometimes sidekicks Tom and Kyra, Farrant has spent nearly half a decade bringing Anthony Horowitz‘s YA best sellers about an underaged special-ops agent to rollicking, adrenalized life for Freevee (formerly known as IMDbTV). “I think it was five years ago that I did my first audition. Jonathan Rhys Meyers plays James Brooke, a British adventurer who became the White Rajah of Sarawak, in a film that fails to probe the complexity of its fascinating subject
While the name James Brooke might seem obscure to many viewers, his exploits in south-east Asia, retold here in Michael Haussman’s adventure biopic, are not so foreign. After all, they inspired Joseph Conrad’s Lord Jim and Rudyard Kipling’s The Man Who Would Be King. Brooke’s stranger-than-fiction journey from ex-soldier in the Bengal army to becoming the White Rajah of Sarawak, which once attracted the attention of Errol Flynn, is especially ripe for the silver screen. Alas, Edge of the World fails to do justice to this fascinating and deeply complex chapter in British colonial history.

Alex Rider is finally premiering in the U.S.
The hit adaptation of the Anthony Horowitz novel series launches on IMDb TV on Friday, November 13.
We got to speak with Horowitz and cast members Otto Farrant, Brenock O'Connor, and Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo about the series.
This is not Alex Rider's first foray in front of the screen, with the original novel, Stormbreaker, being adapted into a movie starring Alex Pettyfer.
But the series is not picking up from the original novel. Instead, Point Blanc is the jumping-off point for the series.
"It was a decision made by the producers and myself from the very start because Stormbreaker would have already been covered," said Horowitz.
"It was sensible to keep moving forward. We did, however, add some of the original material from Stormbreaker back the series. We had to explain how Alex became a spy."

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Television-backed Eleventh Hour Films is gearing up to start shooting the second season of Anthony Horowitz’s spy thriller Alex Rider from the start of next year.
Sony is yet to officially confirm Season 2, but Deadline understands that the drama is slated to begin a 22-week shoot from January 25 in Bristol, south-west England.
This is slightly later than originally intended. When we revealed the Season 2 renewal in June, Eleventh Hour was hoping to get into production this year, but the pandemic has created widespread disruption to shoot dates.
Alex Rider’s first season was fully financed by Sony Pictures Television’s International Production and Worldwide Distribution divisions. Sony later sold it to Amazon’s ad-supported streaming service IMDb TV in the U.S. and Amazon Prime in the UK. It is not clear if Sony will go it alone again on Season 2, or if it will work with a co-production partner.

Point Blanc
Blanc, not Blank!
That’s the name of the mysterious academy that has quite a few skeletons hidden in its cupboards. The fact that this academy, stylishly called Point Blanc, is in the middle of the alps further lends a mystic feel to the entire setting. Well, this is where teenager Alex Rider has been given the responsibility by none other than MI6 to run his own espionage operation. That when the boy is all of 14 and the entire British intelligence is hinging on his support to find out what happens behind the curtains!
Preposterous as it may sound but such is the prowess of Anthony Horowitz’s writing (originally seen and read in the multi-edition novel of the same name) that you allow suspension of disbelief to set in and join this spy show. Even as those with a conscience want the spy agency’s...

Alex Rider Season 2 is officially in the works at Sony Pictures Television.
Developed by screenwriter Guy Burt, and based on the bestselling book series by Anthony Horowitz (creator of U.K. WWII-era detective series Foyle’s War), Sony’s Alex Rider follows the titular teen (Otto Farrant), who discovers a family legacy in the spy game after his late uncle/adoptive father seemingly dies under mysterious circumstances. Subsequently recruited by MI6 subdivision the Department of Special Operations, Alex undergoes a transformative training process for a job that uproots his adolescent life.
The second season renewal of Alex Rider arrives, via Deadline, shortly after the TV series made its June 4 debut, specifically in the franchise’s homefront, on Amazon U.K. However, while it has yet to arrive in most countries, including the U.S., Sony is reportedly close to landing a deal for platforms in the U.S., Australia and China.

Alex Rider’s first season was fully financed by Sony Pictures Television’s International Production and Worldwide Distribution divisions without a network or streamer attached.

International espionage is a lonely business. Global superspies rarely enjoy the everyday comfort of family and friends. When the people you love can be used against you, personal attachment presents a risk. It’s why you never see James Bond swapping memes on a ‘Steve’s 40th’ WhatsApp group or hitting Nando’s with his five-a-side mates. To spy is to be alone.
Even teen agent Alex Rider, recruited by MI6 aged 14 in the hit Anthony Horowitz book series, is isolated from his peers. Alex’s world-saving adventures take him away from school and his social circle. The friends he does have are few and far between, schoolmate Tom Harris popping up in only three of the 14 Alex Rider novels.
In Sony’s new eight-part Alex Rider series, out now on Amazon Prime UK, that’s been tweaked. Tom’s character has been expanded and written into the events of Point Blanc,...

From the brilliant mind of Anthony Horowitz, comes a new adaptation of his series of Alex Rider novels, that tell the story of a teenage spy avenging the death of his uncle. To mark the launch – on Amazon Prime Video on June 4th – we had the pleasure of speaking to the lead role himself, Otto Farrant. He was paired with the brilliant Brenock O’Connor, who plays Alex’s best friend in this exciting new series.

Synopsis
When Alex Rider learns that his uncle Ian has been killed in the line of duty as a British spy – and not in a car accident like he’s been told – everything changes for this otherwise normal teen. He is approached by Alan Blunt, head of a shadowy offshoot of MI6 known as The Department, who reveals that Alex has been unknowingly trained since childhood...

This spoiler-free Alex Rider review is based on episodes 1-4.
For UK kids born after 1990, and parents and teachers of the same, Anthony Horowitz’s bestselling Alex Rider books need no introduction. School libraries keep multiple spine-cracked, Sellotape-repaired copies. ‘Stormbreaker’ posters decorate classroom walls, and in schools around the country, tie-in ‘Scorpia’ key stage worksheets are photocopied by the hundredweight. Booksellers asked by customers how to entice a young, reluctant, usually male reader into fiction don’t even wait for the question to end before plucking an Alex Rider off their shelves. When Harry Potter has done all he can, reach for Alex.
For everybody else, the Rider books tell the phenomenally popular story of a 14-year-old London schoolboy recruited by MI6 as a spy. Armed with comically age-appropriate gadgets including metal-dissolving acne cream, a grappling hook disguised as a yo-yo, and a Sony Discman that turns into a circular saw,...

It’s March 2019 and actor Otto Farrant is sitting in his car listening to heavy metal at top volume. Over the din, he’s screaming out the words to Jake Bugg’s ‘Seen it All’ (‘I’ve seen it all/I’ve seen it all now/I swear to god I’ve seen it all/ Nothing shocks me anymore.’) He changes songs, trying another, then another, and another. For an hour. For two hours. It leaves him and his voice totally drained.
No, the stress of leading Sony’s new teen spy thriller Alex Rider hasn’t got to him. This is rehearsal. He’s practising for an upcoming scene in which his character – a teenage schoolboy recruited by MI6 – is kidnapped and tortured by a band of mysterious operatives.

The three-part PBS Masterpiece miniseries “Mrs. Wilson,” which premieres Sunday, is an entertaining but daunting experience. Heavy on drama but light on action, the piece methodically deconstructs a widow’s reckoning of her late husband when all of his deceit comes crashing down around her after he’s gone. Every time she finds out something horrible about him – and there’s a lot – we aren’t privy to his actual actions, just her pained and difficult-to-watch reaction.
