He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) before being awarded Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in the 2014 Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to Science. He is the Buchanan Professor of Genetics at the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was also appointed a Fellow of the Royal Science and appointed a Fellow of the RSE.
