Lulu Wang and Dani Melia have signed a first-look television deal with Amazon via their newly formed production company, Local Time.

Wang and Melia first worked together on the critically-acclaimed 2019 feature “The Farewell.” Under the deal, Local Time will develop shows from emerging storytellers for Amazon. Wang is currently directing and executive producing the Amazon drama series “Expats,” based on the Janice Y.K. Lee novel “The Expatriates.” The Hong Kong-set series stars Nicole Kidman, who also executive produces.

“We’re thrilled to be expanding our relationship with Amazon,” Wang said. “Jen Salke and her team have been remarkable partners on ‘Expats’ and we look forward to many more artist-driven collaborations.”

Wang and Melia are also currently developing a series version of Lysley Tenorio’s novel “Son of Good Fortune” along with Riz Ahmed’s Left Handed Films. Variety exclusively reported the project was in the works in November 2021. Local Time...

Lulu Wang, director of Awkwafina comedy drama The Farewell, and producer Dani Melia have launched their own production company and struck a first-look TV deal with Amazon.

The pair have established Local Time and will work with Amazon Studios to exec produce television projects. It will focus on championing emerging storytellers.

It comes as Wang is directing and exec producing Expats, a series based on Janice Y.K. Lee’s novel, The Expatriates, for the streamer. The series stars Nicole Kidman and Brian Tee and is set in Hong Kong.

The pair are developing Son of Good Fortune, an adaptation of Lysley Tenorio’s novel, for Amazon via Local Time, alongside Riz Ahmed’s Left Handed Films.

On the television side, Wang is also attached to direct and produce half-hour comedy drama series Family Meal for MRC Television and on the feature side, Local Time is producing the Wang-helmed sci-fi feature,...

Riz Ahmed’s Left Handed Films and Lulu Wang’s Local Time are partnering to develop the comedy series “The Son of Good Fortune” at Amazon, Variety has learned exclusively.

Based on the novel of the same name by Lysley Tenorio, the series is about an undocumented Filipino teenager in the Bay area navigating a tumultuous relationship with his former B-movie action star mother, falling in love for the first time, and working out how to pay back a massive debt before his whole life crumbles.

Andrew Lopez will adapt the book for the screen and serve as an executive producer. Ahmed will executive produce along with Allie Moore of Left Handed. Wang and Dani Melia executive produce for Local Time. Tenorio will serve as consulting producer, with Amazon Studios producing.
