Tom Cruise’s highest-grossing film happened only because the director was able to convey the emotional core of the film to the actor in 20 minutes. When Joe Kosinski approached Cruise for Top Gun: Maverick, he knew that a sequel wouldn’t be at the top of the mind for the Mission: Impossible actor. However, Kosinski’s pitch impressed Cruise, who immediately greenlit the film.

Top Gun: Maverick, a sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun, was in development hell for years. Cruise dismissed the idea of a sequel in the ’90s itself. Tony Scott, the original director, was attached to the project in 2010, as development began at Paramount Pictures. However, Scott’s death in 2012 put the sequel in uncertainty for a long time before Kosinski took it up in 2017.

Stars: Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, Sophie Wilde, Antonio Banderas, Esther McGregor, Vaughn Reilly, Victor Slezak | Written and Directed by Halina Reijn
Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson star in this erotic office drama from writer-director Halina Reijn’s follow-up to last year’s horror favourite Bodies Bodies Bodies. Provocative and crackling with tension, Babygirl explores ideas of desire, control and illicit sexuality from a decidedly Gen Z perspective, while playing interesting games with established erotic thriller conventions.
Kidman plays Romy Mathis, the powerful CEO of a New York robotics company, who seemingly has it all, including two teenage daughters (Esther McGregor and Vaughan Reilly) and an apparently happy marriage to successful theatre director Jacob (Antonio Banderas). However, there are early hints that something is missing, because – in the opening scene – after faking an orgasm with Jacob, Romy sneaks off to a different room and masturbates to dodgy daddy porn on her laptop.

Oscar winner Nicole Kidman stars as Romy, a high-powered CEO who jeopardizes her family and career when she starts an affair with Samuel, a younger intern (Harris Dickinson), in A24’s Babygirl. The official trailer shows the early flirtations that quickly escalate to a steamy, illicit affair.
“I really decided in the beginning, I want to make a sexual film, just as sexual as all these films that I’ve always admired so much, but now I’m going to do it completely through female eyes. What does that mean and what does that look like?” stated writer/director Halina Reijn (Bodies Bodies Bodies).
The cast also includes Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me) as Esme, Romy’s assistant, and Antonio Banderas as Romy’s husband, Jacob. Reijn’s behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Jasper Wolf, production designer Stephen Carter, editor Matthew Hannam, and costume designers Kurt Swanson and Bart Mueller.

Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson explore power dynamics with a high-stakes love affair in the trailer for the erotic thriller Babygirl.
A24 releases writer-director Halina Reijn’s feature in theaters nationwide on Dec. 25, although the film is a bit steamier than traditional holiday fare. Also starring Antonio Banderas and Sophie Wilde, Babygirl centers on Romy (Kidman), a feared CEO who begins a romance with Samuel (Dickinson), a much-younger intern at her company.
“If we’re going to do this, we need to set some rules that you and I both agree on,” Dickinson instructs Kidman in the trailer. “Starting with, I tell you what to do, and you do it.”
At a later point in the footage, Kidman tells her new beau, “You’re very young. I don’t want to hurt you.” Dickinson replies, “Hurt me? I think I have power over you because I could make one call,...

"You're very young... I don't want to hurt you." Oh boy. A24 has revealed the sizzling official trailer for the erotic thriller film titled Babygirl, which originally premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival last month (and won Best Actress). Babygirl is the latest feature from Dutch filmmaker Halina Reijn, following up her horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies recently. Written and directed by Reijn, Babygirl stars Nicole Kidman as a powerful CEO at a major corporation based in New York City. She begins an erotic affair with a hunky new intern who strolls through her company's doors one day. The two explore an intimate sub-dom relationship as they both come to understand their own sexuality. Babygirl also stars Harris Dickinson, Antonio Banderas, Sophie Wilde, Esther McGregor. This is a fantastic trailer and a clever marketing campaign (since it opens on Christmas Day) but I'm not the biggest fan of the film overall.

Nicole Kidman recently starred in the Netflix comedy A Family Affair, which involved an unusual tryst with a younger man. Now, Kidman’s lust gets her into more than she bargained for again with the much darker-toned Babygirl. A24 has just released the trailer for this intense and unconventional erotic thriller that plays with power struggle, consent, grooming, and coercion. Our own Chris Bumbray enjoyed the provocative film at TIFF this year, saying in his review, “It’s controversial, but it’s also one of the sexier films to come along in recent memory. Kidman deserves major praise for her consistent refusal to play it safe as an actress.”
Babygirl stars Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), and Jean Reno (Léon: The Professional). Babygirl will cheekily be released in theaters just in time for Christmas viewings, giving it a December 25 release date.

Nicole Kidman stars as an uptight CEO who is sexually liberated by her intern, played by Harris Dickinson. Here’s the Babygirl trailer.
Director Halina Reijn is swapping horror satires for erotic thrillers with her new film Babygirl, which made quite the splash at Cannes Film Festival in May. The film follows Nicole Kidman’s CEO who begins an intense affair with Harris Dickinson’s intern.
Take a look at the first Babygirl trailer below.
Babygirl is certainly miles away from Reijn’s breakthrough film, the sharp and brutal horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies. The film was warmly received at Cannes and currently holds a 93% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Nicole Kidman picked up the Best Actress trophy at the Venice film festival as well.

Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson are de-stigmatizing Bdsm relationships with the aptly-titled “Babygirl.”
The “Eyes Wide Shut” star and “Triangle of Sadness” alum both lead “Bodies Bodies Bodies” filmmaker Halina Reijn’s A24 erotic thriller. “Babygirl” centers on a successful CEO (Kidman) who begins an illicit affair with her much younger intern (Harris Dickinson). The film was first announced in November 2023.
Kidman’s character Romy is a shipping company exec whose marriage to her husband (Antonio Banderas) is lacking a certain eroticism. Enter new intern Samuel (Harris Dickinson), who has no problem dominating his boss Romy outside of the conference room. The duo embark on a dom/sub dynamic, with “Babygirl” not shying away from capturing the ins and outs of kink.
“It’s about desires, your inner thoughts, it’s about secrets, marriage, truth, power, consent, the language [around] sex,” Kidman said about the feature while at the Venice premiere.

Watch Dogs is the latest video game franchise to receive a live-action adaptation. Ubisoft partnered with Columbia Pictures and New Regency for this ambitious endeavor, and the gaming community is rightfully skeptical about this franchise being translated from a video game to a film. Director Mathieu Turi recently announced the project has wrapped filming at an impressive rate.

A laptop sits at the edge of the frame, its glow casting shadows across Romy (Nicole Kidman). Porn is playing. There are glimpses of a woman on all fours, gazing behind her at a man who coaxes her on with sneering encouragement. But the images are less important than the tinny voice emanating from them.

At the Venice Film Festival premiere of “Babygirl,” the audience seemed pleased by director Halina Reijn and star Nicole Kidman’s erotic thriller centered on female pleasure.
Before the film even ended, a climactic scene had already elicited claps from viewers inside the Sala Grande. As the credits rolled, the crowd stood and cheered for the cast and crew, which also includes Harris Dickinson, Antonio Banderas, and “Talk to Me” breakout Sophie Wilde.
The upcoming A24 release tells the story of a shipping technology executive, played by Kidman, who enters into a sadomasochistic relationship with one of the new interns at her company, played by Dickinson.
The film marks Reijn’s follow-up to the horror comedy “Bodies Bodies Bodies,” the Dutch actress turned director’s English language debut as a writer, though this time she took on the job of director as well.

Nicole Kidman Heats Up Venice with ‘Babygirl’ and Kinky Sex Onscreen — Festival Day Three Highlights
If only it were just the stars bringing heat to the Venice Film Festival.
This year’s Biennale on the Lido continues to be one of the hottest on record — incoming attendees, if you don’t have one of those Uv-fighting umbrellas, brace yourself. How Nicole Kidman, water-taxiing into the Lido for the world premiere of the psychosexual thriller “Babygirl,” arrived at Friday’s press conference in a black dress without an ounce of sweat is anyone’s guess. The room was hot, but then it got hotter. The Oscar-winning star showed up with the cast and crew, including co-stars Harris Dickinson, Antonio Banderas, and Sophie Wilde, and writer/director Halina Reijn, for a presser heavy on questions on Kidman’s nudity in the film. As she explained to the press corps, she doesn’t get caught up in the “minutiae” of showing sexuality onscreen. Kidman’s turn in “Babygirl...

Nicole Kidman was in the house Thursday as writer-director Halina Reijn’s Babygirl had its world premiere screening at the Venice Film Festival. The A24 erotic thriller garnered a seven-minute-plus ovation from the Sala Grande audience.
Kidman was joined at the premiere by fellow cast members Harris Dickinson, Antonio Banderas and Sophie Wilde, as well as filmmaker Reijn.
After the screening, Reijn and Kidman hugged and chatted as they made their way down from the theater gallery. The woo-hooing only stopped when they were escorted out of the building.
Babygirl centers on Kidman’s high-powered CEO who puts her life’s work on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much-younger intern. A24 will next take the film to TIFF before releasing the film in the U.S. on Christmas Day.

Nicole Kidman and Harris Dickinson brought sexy back to Venice Friday night at the premiere of Halina Reijn’s kinky, sex-filled “Babygirl.”
In the A24 movie, Kidman plays a high-powered CEO who starts a secret affair with her new intern (Dickinson).
While not a conventional art house movie, “Babygirl” stimulated the Venice audience. As the end credits rolled on the film at the Sala Grande Theatre, the crowd erupted into a 6.5-minute standing ovation.
As the audience cheered, Kidman hugged Reijn and beamed and blushed at all the attention.
It was a sweaty night in Italy — in more ways than one. “It’s so hot,” Kidman said as she waved to fans before entering the theater earlier, on a day when temperatures crept up to 90 degrees. But “Babygirl” seemed to crank up the heat even more as the movie got underway. Kidman’s character Romy pushes the envelope in a...

At a Friday afternoon press conference, Nicole Kidman said that the anticipation of presenting the world premiere of her new erotic thriller Babygirl had her feeling “exposed and vulnerable and frightened.” But those emotions certainly were not on display as the Oscar-winning actress hit the red carpet at Palazzo del Cinema in Venice later that night.
Kidman looked every bit like the confident movie star as she faced the crush of photographers, press and adoring fans in an avant-garde couture creation by Daniel Roseberry for Schiaparelli. Fans lining the barricade erupted with cheers as she made her entrance in a striking ensemble that featured a corset bustier in nude organza embroidered with black sequins that cascaded into black fringes. The look was paired with a long black velvet skirt and stilettos. Kidman greeted her director Halina Reijn, dressed in a white cape, and the two gathered for a warm embrace.

Halina Reijn’s frank sexual odyssey begins as it means to go on, with a level of candor that many audiences will find hard to process. They’ll buy into Nicole Kidman’s performance alright, since it’s hard to ignore the amount of dedication, not to mention naked flesh, that she brings to the role. But though there are wry laughs to be had, from the exquisite awkwardness of the setup alone, Babygirl was received by many at its Venice premiere as a comedy, which trivializes the extraordinary atmosphere that Reijn creates. Her experiences working as an actor for Paul Verhoeven (on 2006’s Black Books) clearly rubbed off, since her third feature owes a small debt to his controversial revenge thriller Elle, which raised a similarly provocative debate about male aggression and female sexuality.

Halina Reijn’s 2022 English-language debut, Bodies Bodies Bodies, was a slender but enjoyably nasty slasher whodunit that poked around in its Gen Z characters’ heads. The Dutch director’s more complex new film, Babygirl, is an erotic thriller that again considers the ways in which young people are wired differently, knowing what they want and how to get it but maybe also what the rest of us want, too. That’s more of a cheeky side note, however, in the story of a middle-aged woman — played with physical and psychological fearlessness by Nicole Kidman — finding liberation by surrendering to her repressed desires.
Sexy, dark and unpredictable, with a tone that mixes tension and caustic humor, the movie occupies a thematic landscape not so distant from Reijn’s 2019 debut feature, Instinct, about a female prison therapist drawn into a risky infatuation with a rapist. As in that film, Babygirl repeatedly asks...

The worst thing your partner could possibly say to you after sex, after you’ve said “I love you,” is the dreaded “love you.” No “I.” And that’s not the most demoralizing response Romy (Nicole Kidman) has for an amorous confession by her husband Jacob (Antonio Banderas) in “Babygirl,” writer/director Halina Reijn’s provocative erotic dramedy that begins and ends with an orgasm. One of them is faked, but in between, this perversely funny and absorbing new film explores the pleasure gap between men and women, and how our inability to talk about sex limits our ability to just do it.
And there’s lots of sex here, with Kidman going raw inside and out for one of her top performances in a career built on risk-taking. That’s all the way back to her psychosexual breakout in “Dead Calm” and as recently as “Big Little Lies,” where...

The cast for Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s next film is taking shape with some of Hollywood’s finest joining Tom Cruise in the cast.
Last we heard about Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s next film was in February when Tom Cruise was attached to star.
Now, Deadline reports that the film’s cast has gotten significantly bigger. Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons and Sophie Wilde are all on board The Revenant director’s new film. Riz Ahmed is also in the final stages of negotiations to join the cast. That’s a lot of star power and it has certainly caught our attention.
Hüller’s career has really taken off since her Oscar nomination for the tremendous Anatomy Of A Fall and it’s great to see a young star such as Wilde in the cast. Wilde was seen in Talk To Me, one of last year’s finest horror films.

The film has assembled a talented cast that includes Tom Cruise as well as several Oscar-winning and nominated actors.
Little is known about the film’s plot, but it is described as a “high-stakes drama.” Sources say the storyline follows “the most powerful man in the world” as he desperately tries to prove he can save humanity from a disaster he caused. This premise suggests audiences will see Cruise take on a serious dramatic role outside the action movies he’s known for.
Joining Cruise in the film are actors with proven dramatic abilities like Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons. Rising star Sophie Wilde and Oscar winner Riz Ahmed are also expected to star.
