Principal photography of Mexican writer-director Iria Gómez Concheiro’s dystopian thriller “Here be Dragons” is underway in Mexico, with Gómez Concheiro’s Ciudad Cinema producing alongside “La Jaula de Oro” producer Machete Prods., led by Edher Campos.
“When the project was broached to me last year by Iria and her producing partner Rodrigo Rios Legaspi, I was immediately drawn to it as I was keen to make a science fiction film, especially because it deals with themes that interest me, trouble me and that are very relevant today: the control over a society, the fragility of youth, its struggle in a failing system, global warming, the scarcity of resources and the power those resources hold within a government,” said Campos.
“And that control makes you believe you should be afraid. That indeed, here be dragons,” he added wryly.

"Don't listen to everything your father says." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a Mexican satire dramedy film called Down the Rabbit Hole, by Mexican filmmaker Manolo Caro. Down the Rabbit Hole is the alternate English title for this, also known as Fiesta en la Madriguera in Spanish, based on the book of the exact same name. Raised in opulence and culture, 10-year-old Tochtli's lavish life contrasts with the darkness that seeps in from his father's criminal activities. This is about a young Mexican kid who wants a hippo above all else. It reminds me of the story of Pablo Escobar's infamous "cocaine hippos", which might be part of the influence (or reference) for why this kid wants one anyway. Miguel Valverde Uribe stars as Tochtli, a particularly intelligent and precocious boy who at first glance seems to have everything, and when he doesn't, his father, Yolcaut, will do...

Huerta was accused of being a “sexual predator” by Mexican musician and activist María Elena Ríos. Huerta has denied those accusations, calling them “completely unsubstantiated.”

Mo star and creator Mo Amer discussed the difficulties and tender vulnerability that comes with addressing his family’s hardships and experiences when he joined Deadline’s Contenders TV event Sunday.
The Netflix comedy-drama series, also co-created with Ramy Youssef, is inspired by Amer’s real-life experiences as a Palestinian refugee in America. The show explores the life of Amer and his family in Houston as they try to attain U.S. citizenship while working odd jobs to stay afloat. Teresa Ruiz, Omar Elba and Tobe Nwigwe also star.
Trying to explain the many nuances of the American legal immigration system, whether on or off screen, certainly has its challenges, something Amer thought long and hard about while penning the series. “Doing something that’s so incredibly personal to you, that’s a scary thing,” Amer said. “It sounds like it might be easy and something that is just in your wheelhouse,...

Netflix has renewed its comedy Mo for a second season — but it will also be the show’s last.
Ending after two seasons is by design: The second installment will wrap up Palestinian refugee Mo Najjar’s (co-creator and star Mo Amer) journey to gain asylum in Houston.
“I’m thankful to continue to tell a universal story of struggle that relates to so many refugees and millions of underrepresented humans trying to be seen around the globe, and to be able to bring the people who loved and rooted for Mo Najjar along for the ride as we close this chapter of his story,” Amer said in a statement.
Mo, which Amer co-created with Ramy Youssef, premiered in August 2022 to widespread critical praise. Above all else, Mo allows [the title character] to just be himself — and it’s that self-assured voice that makes the series such a treat to watch,” The Hollywood Reporter critic Angie Han wrote.

Noise (Ruido) is a Mexican movie directed by Natalia Beristain, starring Julieta Egurrola and Teresa Ruiz.
Noise is a movie that takes a gamble in drama and a dramatic portrayal rather than subtleties in the narrative, a movie in which Julieta Egurrola is up to the gamble and who gives back perfectly.

That and a full on spy challenging the DOJ to find the stolen classified documents in a shell game of 3 card monte exactly like a subway car hustler.

I was talking to another movie buff the other night when the subject of Mark Wahlberg came up. "What," he said, "you mean Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch?" It wasn't the first time I've heard people make snarky comments about Wahlberg's hip hop career before he got into acting, which got me thinking: Why just him? When the name Charlize Theron enters the discussion, no one says, "What, you mean the former winner of the Rooi Rose modeling competition in South Africa?" or makes a wisecrack about Hugh Jackman's previous job as a children's entertainer called Coco the Clown.
I think it's because people are, for whatever reason, still dubious about the talents of a guy who first tasted stardom rapping badly while frequently appearing shirtless with a baseball cap, and that was before using his buff physique to sell underpants. This is weird because he has done...

I cut my hair really short. I dyed it. It was all this stuff that nobody asked me to do, and I just felt it would be something, or it would add something. So, it was a big leap of faith. That whole character is a leap of faith and it was uncomfortable,” she says. “I just let it go and I didn’t care where the camera was and I didn’t care to be beautiful.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Mark Wahlberg’s Father Stu is heading back to theaters next month, and this time, it will be without all those naughty words. The original cut of Father Stu was released back in April with an R-rating for “language throughout,” but Sony Pictures will re-release the movie on December 9th with a PG-13 edit.
Boasting a new title — Father Stu: Reborn — the recut movie is now rated PG-13 for “language, an accident scene, sexual references, some violence and smoking.” Based on a true story, Father Stu follows the life of Stuart Long, a boxer-turned-priest who inspired countless people during his journey from self-destruction to redemption. Written and directed by Rosalind Ross, Father Stu starred Mark Wahlberg as the title character, along with Mel Gibson, Jacki Weaver, and Teresa Ruiz.

Mark Wahlberg may have waited seven months instead of the traditional three days, but the end result is the same: He Is Risen! This holiday season, the well-known hamburger salesman and occasional actor is set to return to a theater near you, where he will star in a movie that already came out earlier this year. That's right, your prayers have indeed been answered — "Father Stu" is back and he's got a new subtitle.
After taking half a year to process, Marky Mark has solved the mystery of "Father Stu" and its low box office returns: the faith-based drama was too hardcore for its target audience! So despite a pretty reasonable yield of 21 million against a 4 million budget, the biopic is being re-released in theaters as "Father Stu: Reborn". This version has been edited down for an MPAA rating of PG-13, as opposed to the original R-rating.

Whether it’s a way to give a small movie a second chance in theaters or an opportunity to capitalize on a particularly quiet time at the box office, Sony is offering a surprise re-release to the Mark Wahlberg film “Father Stu” this December, where it will now open re-cut as a PG-13 version.
The new film is called “Father Stu: Reborn.” While the original film — released this April ahead of the Easter holiday — was dinged with an R-rating for “language throughout,” the new cut still features “language, an accident scene, sexual references, some violence and smoking.” A perfect evening for the whole family.

Sony is bringing a PG-13 version of “Father Stu” titled “Father Stu: Reborn” back to life – and theaters – on Dec. 9.
The Columbia Pictures and Mark Wahlberg religious drama was originally rated R by the MPAA for “language throughout.” According to a spokesperson for Sony, “Reborn” will qualify for a PG-13 rating based on its toned-down language as well as the omission of an accident scene, sexual references, some violence and smoking.
The recut version will not feature any reshot or additional material.
Based on a true story, “Father Stu” revolves around amateur boxer Stuart Long (Wahlberg) who moves to Los Angeles when an injury cuts short his fledgling career. After he begins attending church in hopes of courting a Sunday school teacher, Stu has an epiphany that he is destined to become a Catholic priest.
The film was written and directed by Rosalind Ross and co-stars Mel Gibson, Jacki Weaver and Teresa Ruiz.

Sony has moved Love Again, the romantic comedy starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Sam Heughan and Celine Dion, to May 12, 2023. It previously had a released date of February 10.
Logline for the Jim Strouse-directed movie: What if a random text message led to the love of your life? Mira Ray, dealing with the loss of her fiancé, sends a series of romantic texts to his old cell phone number…not realizing the number was reassigned to Rob Burns’ new work phone. A journalist, Rob is captivated by the honesty in the beautifully confessional texts. When he’s assigned to write a profile of megastar Celine Dion (playing herself in her first film role), he enlists her help in figuring out how to meet Mira in person…and win her heart.
Dion also has several songs in the film.
The pic, squarely aimed at women, is dated for Mother’s Day weekend...

Today, Hulu debuted the third season of Ramy, the wonderful dramedy co-created by and starring comedian Ramy Youssef as a Muslim-American man struggling to reconcile his faith with his fondness for forbidden activities like sex, porn, and drugs. It’s been two and a half years since we last saw Ramy, but Youssef was not exactly idle during the long pandemic hiatus. In addition to writing or co-writing all 10 episodes of the new season and directing most of them, he co-created a whole other series about being young, reckless, and...

Editor’s note: This article contains mild spoilers for “Mo.”
There’s nothing sexier than confidence — especially in a freshman TV show. Now streaming on Netflix, Ramy Youssef and Mo Amer’s “Mo” is as self-assured and richly imagined as Youssef’s Hulu series “Ramy” — only this is an even more complex and multifaceted portrayal of minority life. Unlike “Ramy” or “Ms. Marvel,” which also center on nonwhite protagonists and immigrant families, Mo’s family knows each day that it could be their last in the country.
Not the stuff of comedy? Why not? “Mo” dares to acknowledge what many people know already: Seeking asylum can be just another domestic situation.
Amer is Mo, a Palestinian refugee living in Houston who must balance work, faith, family life, and his pending asylum case. Based on Amer’s own experience, Mo’s refugee status informs every aspect of his life. This isn...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you haven’t watched Season 1 of “Mo” on Netflix.
As I finish interviewing comedian Mo Amer and ask him if there’s anything else he’d like to talk about, he says, “I don’t have a lean addiction, nor have I ever been addicted to lean. I keep saying that every chance I can, because it gets weird out here.”
It’s an important distinction to make, as the mixture of prescription cough syrup, soda and candy has killed many, especially in Houston, where Amer grew up. He is the co-creator, executive producer and star of “Mo,” a comedy-drama series that heavily draws from his true experiences as a refugee — his parents were displaced from Palestine to Kuwait where Amer was born, before the whole family fled to Texas during the Gulf War. Several of the show’s most painful moments — like when,...

Netflix’s new series Mo begins almost like The Sopranos. We see a heavyset figure (the comedian Mo Amer) drive to work. The shots alternate between Mo, smoking a cigarette and bopping to the sounds of “Sittin’ Sidewayz” by Paul Wall and Big Pokey, and half-glimpsed shots of the world he passes – not New Jersey but Houston, Texas. He arrives at work (a tech repair shop) and is abruptly sacked, amid fears that the business will be targeted in an immigration crackdown (Mo is a Palestinian refugee). Later in the episode, he is caught up in a random shooting at a supermarket; he gets a bullet in the arm but, uninsured, he refuses to go to hospital. Does this sound much like comedy to you?
Obviously not, you might think. But Mo is not your traditional sitcom. Created by Amer and comedian Ramy Youssef, the eight-episode series, which draws from...

At a Texan courthouse, while waiting for his family’s number to be called for a long-awaited hearing, Mo (Mo Amer) starts having a sweaty meltdown at precisely the least convenient moment. Fresh off a fight with his girlfriend Maria (Teresa Ruiz), worried sick for his mother, Yusra (Farah Bseiso), and in disbelief that his Palestinian refugee family might actually be getting the asylum they’ve needed for so long, Mo’s so overwhelmed and impatient that he can barely stay in his seat. As with most every episode of “Mo,” Netflix’s new series created by Amer and Ramy Youssef (“Ramy”), the stakes are as high as Mo’s escalating blood pressure.
But “Mo” is also a comedy with a fast-talking lionheart at its center, and as such, even this incredibly stressful time can vibrate with frissons of the ridiculous. Mo tussles with a security guard who refuses to...

Late in the first episode of Netflix’s Mo, the title character (played by Mo Amer, who also co-created the series with Ramy Youssef) gets shot while shopping for cat food. Well, grazed — he’ll be fine once he’s treated at the hospital, the paramedics reassure him. Mo panics, as freaked out by the prospect of running up a medical bill without health insurance as he is by the fact of what’s actually happened to him. Meanwhile, the jaded EMTs bicker over his gurney about whether the shooting counts as “mass” if only four people were hit, including the shooter.
The scene feel darkly funny and a touch surreal, in the way the most harrowing moments of real life often do. It’s a distinctive example of what Mo does so well. Over eight half-hour episodes, the dramedy keeps itself afloat...

Mo Najjar is just your average Joe, trying to get his piece of the American dream. He’s also a multilingual Kuwaiti-born Palestinian living in Houston who has been patiently waiting for his immigration hearing — for two decades. Through all that, Mo mines plenty of laughs from hilarious culture clashes involving his sharp-tongued mom (Farah Bsieso), anxious older brother (Omar Elba) and his girlfriend Maria (Teresa Ruiz) and best friend Nick (Tobe Nwigwe). He’ll do whatever it takes to make a buck — strip club DJ, olive picker, merchandise dealer from the trunk of his car — to support his family, and he doles out plenty of smarts and sarcasm in the process. Looking for viewers to come away with “understanding and compassion for what it takes to be a refugee,” Amer hopes they can also “laugh and cry with us.” Job well done! Mo, Premiere, ...

Mark Wahlberg stars in a based on truth story ably supported by Jacki Weaver –though Mel Gibson is a much less welcome presence
In this de facto, if far from de jure, latest iteration of the Ted franchise, Mark Wahlberg once again forms a strange, almost inexplicable bond with a supernatural creature who tests him in a number of painful, problematic ways. However – surprise! – instead of a stuffed teddy bear that’s come to life, this time the agent of chaos is God himself, that omnipresent, omniscient, all-powerful scamp. God first makes the life of Wahlberg’s Stuart Long hard by taking away his little brother via a sudden death when they are little kids, and then giving him a nature that gets him into trouble throughout his life, keeping him from finding a vocation until he finally Finds a Vocation, ie the desire to become a priest.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore could have used a little more magic on its opening weekend. Strike that, make that a lot more magic. The third chapter in Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter spin-off saga debuted to a less-than-fantastic 43 million in North America over the long Easter frame—the lowest roll-out in the series to date. However, some good news came from overseas, where the wizarding tale has been able to conjure significantly more enchantment, taking in 150.4 million in its first two weekends of release. Bereft of any magic all together was Sony’s fifth-place finisher Father Stu,, the inspirational story of a boxer-turned-priest starring Mark Wahlberg. Despite the religious-themed film’s Easter arrival, it laid an egg with a 5.7 million bow.
While the latest Fantastic Beasts is only the third chapter in a planned series of five, the Potter prequel franchise seems to already be showing signs of diminishing box-office returns.

“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” the latest film in the Wizarding World universe and the third movie as part of the “Fantastic Beasts” franchise, brought in 6 million in its Thursday box office previews from over 3,350 screens.
While “Fantastic Beasts” looked to be a once promising franchise when it launched in 2016, the third film, “The Secrets of Dumbledore,” has been dogged by off screen controversy and is following up some tepid reviews for the previous film “The Crimes of Grindelwald.” And while independent trackers say that “Secrets of Dumbledore” could climb to between 47-50 million this weekend, that would be below the prior installment.
For comparison, “Crimes of Grindelwald” opened in November 2018 and made 9.1 million in Thursday box office previews and then opened to 62 million. It went on to a theatrical run of 154.5 million domestic and 654.8 million worldwide. The first film, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” from 2016, likewise...

AfterSonic the Hedgehog 2 dashed into theaters for a 70 million opening and gave 2022 its third 100+ million overall weekend gross, there is hope that the momentum keeps up this weekend with the release of Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore. Whether or not the film lives up to previous installments, this long Easter weekend should continue the hot streak from the past three weekends, which are all in the top five for this year.
The Secrets of Dumbledore is the third film (out of a planned five) in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, which acts as a prequel to the Harry Potter series, taking place many decades prior and focusing on Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and a slew of other wizards (and a muggle) in a war against dark wizard Grindelwald. This time future Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore takes center stage as Jude Law steps into the role, and the ensemble also includes Ezra Miller,...

While the new film Father Stu may initially come across as a simple bad guy breaks good by becoming a priest and righting his past wrongs, it also manages to tell an earnest and emotionally rewarding story. What could have been a pandering, emotion-laden tale of one individual finding his “divine” purpose in life, instead proves to be a heart-felt and well-executed story of personal discovery and salvation.
After a near-fatal motorcycle accident, Stuart Long (Mark Wahlberg) is forced to abandon his lifelong ambition to be a professional boxer. So, he decides to move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting, despite lacking any experience or training. Then, through another series of startling events, Stuart comes to the realization that he is supposed to be a Catholic priest. Although his family (both father [Mel Gibson] and mother [Jacki Weaver]) are skeptical of his sudden career path alteration – as...

Wahlberg takes on one of his more challenging roles as Stuart Long, a ne’er do well who tries boxing and acting, which perplexes his Mother (Jackie Weaver) and is ignored by his angry Dad (Mel Gibson). While schlepping in Hollywood, he comes across a comely young lady (Teresa Ruiz) through her Catholic Church – and tries to woo her – but unexpectedly then feels a calling to be a priest. His most unlikely journey, which include physical problems, is next up in his life as Father Stu.
”Father Stu” is in theaters beginning April 13th. Featuring Mark Wahlberg, Mel Gibson, Jackie Weaver, Malcolm McDowell and Teresa Ruiz.
