Turkish megastar Can Yaman is set to attend the upcoming Mipcom TV market in Cannes to promote English-language drama “El Turco,” in which he plays a legendary historical figure that bridges Turkey with the Western world.
The groundbreaking six-episode “El Turco” series — featuring a starry cast of actors from nine different countries and combining history, action-adventure and romance — will be unveiled in Cannes by Turkish distributor Madd Entertainment, which is planning for the show to get a global release in February 2025.
In “El Turco,” which is produced by Turkey’s Ay Yapim, Yaman plays 17th Ottoman soldier Hasan Balaban, who was wounded during the Turkish army’s campaign to conquer Vienna in 1683 and ended up some 200 kilometers away in the Italian Alpine village of Moena. Nicknamed “El Turco” by the villagers, he led the locals to a clamorous revolt against unfair taxes that made him a local hero.

Brazilian media giant Globo has sold the first international adaptation rights to its biggest telenovela hit in recent years, “Brazil Avenue” (“Avenida Brasil”) to Ay Yapım, one of the most prominent daily series producers of Turkey.
Madd Entertainment, a joint venture of Medyapim (“Mother”) and Ay Yapim (“Endless Love”), will distribute the adaptation worldwide.
The unprecedented agreement allows for Ay Yapım to make some changes as long as it adheres to the telenovela’s main storylines. Globo Studios will be on hand as a consultant.
The International Emmy-nominated soap has already been sold to more than 140 territories so a Turkish adaptation would further expand its reach.
“We are betting on selling formats to bring our productions to new audiences and in different ways. And this agreement with Ay Yapım reflects that, showing the market that we are open to a variety of business models,” said Globo’s head of international business and co-productions,...

Turkey’s film and TV production community is supplying financial aid and resources to the victims of the massive earthquakes that hit the country and neighbor Syria this week, as the death toll crossed the 5,000 mark.
Producers association Tesiyap has released a statement saying it is collecting aid and money from the country’s producers and ensuring this is delivered to earthquake victims “as soon as possible” via Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (Afad) and non-profit organization Ahbap.
“The majority of our member producers shared with us that they took a break from the movie sets for a while to support their charity work,” read the statement in Turkish but that has been translated and independently verified by Deadline.
Major Turkish production companies such as Mf Yapim and Medyapim shared the statement on social media. Mediapim and Ay Yapim also published a separate joint statement saying the premiere of a film they co-produced,...

The film already debuted at Cannes 2022 and released in Turkey this weekend.
Turkey’s General Directorate of Cinema, operating under the country’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism, has demanded the producers of Emin Alper’s Burning Days return production funding awarded to the film, almost seven months after it premiered in Un Certain Regard at Cannes, say the filmmakers.
Alper and producer Nadir Operli said the Directorate contacted them last week with the demand, due to what they say the Directorate describes as ‘script revisions’ made during development.

Saudi-owned Mbc Group, which is the top broadcaster in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region, has forged a five-year partnership with Turkish TV production powerhouses Medyapim and Ay Yapim, officially ending a ban on Turkish soaps that had been put in place in 2018.
Mbc, which is the top satellite free-to-air player in the Middle East and North Africa, and also a major Mena region premium streamer, in 2018 had pulled highly popular Turkish dramas from its channels, allegedly for political reasons stemming from tensions at that time between Turkey and Saudi Arabia. The move was also believed to have been made to give greater impetus to local production. Since then, several Turkish shows had gradually seeped back into Mbc programming. But this deal signals a complete policy reversal.
