Superman director James Gunn revealed the first look at Krypto the Superdog yesterday, but some fans have already criticized his breed. While Krypto is typically depicted as a white Labrador Retriever, he has appeared as many different breeds over the years. Not exactly the most consistent pup. For the film, Gunn chose to model Krypto after his own dog, Ozu.
In response to Gunn’s reveal of Krypto on Threads, one fan said, “Not to be ‘that guy,’ but isn’t Krypto supposed to be something akin to a Labrador or something similar?” Gunn replied, “No. Krypto is historically a generic white dog, sometimes also a lab, white shepherd, husky, or Dalmatian. But obviously he’s an alien so he wouldn’t necessarily be exactly any one of these things.“

James Gunn revealed that the Man of Steel’s trusty, four-legged sidekick will be making his way to the big screen in Superman.
While Krypto the Superdog wasn’t originally set to be in the film, Gunn explained that he adopted a pup named Ozu shortly after he began writing the script, and it inspired Krypton’s inclusion in the upcoming project starring David Corenswet.
“Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least,” the writer-director wrote on X (formerly Twitter). “He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him.”
Gunn continued, “I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of...

Krypto, the Superdog of DC Comics, will appear in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie, his first appearance in a live-action film, thanks to Ozu, Gunn’s own canine best friend.
In a touching post on social media, Gunn described how his own rescue pup inspired him to include the character in the upcoming film set for release on July 11, 2025.
“Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman,” Gunn wrote in a post on X. “Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. When Superman was shooting in Cleveland, we were left with good reason to believe Krypto the Superdog is set to appear in the movie. Based on what we could piece together from photos and footage, Mister Terrific pursues him outside a pet store and eventually takes a laser blast through the foot.
No dog was spotted on set, likely because Krypto will be a CG creation similar to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's Cosmo. Today, filmmaker James Gunn has taken to X to share the first official look at Superman and Krypto sitting side-by-side on the moon watching over Earth.

Krypto, Superman’s super-powered canine companion, debuted in “Adventure Comics” #210 back in March 1955. And now he will be seen in writer/director James Gunn’s big screen “Superman,” hitting theaters on July 11, 2025.
Writing on social media, Gunn said that the character was inspired by his own rescue dog Ozu, whom Gunn and his wife adopted shortly after he started writing “Superman.”

Who’s the best boy? Krypto, that’s who! Superman’s forever-faithful canine companion, Krypto, is making his debut today for James Gunn’s Superman, with a moving image of the Man of Steel and his very good boy enjoying a moment away from the madness of planet Earth. Gunn shared the photo on social media on Tuesday alongside a brief history of how Krypto became a part of the filmmaker’s highly-anticipated film, starring David Corenswet as Big Blue.
Today’s image of Superman and Krypto shows the Last Son of Krypton and his favorite doggo, Krypto, enjoying a respite from crime-fighting on the moon. As the Earth rotates in the distance, the heroes take a moment to enjoy a job well done and listen for when they’re needed next. DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn has once again shared some big Dcu updates, and while he didn't exactly confirm we're getting a Superman trailer before the end of the year, the filmmaker certainly didn't deny it!
There have been rumblings for a while that the Dcu might be showcased at Ccxp in Brazil this December and it would be smart to end the year by showcasing the new Man of Tomorrow.
For now, though, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

A few months ago, there were rumours that Eternals star Kumail Nanjiani might be the Dcu's Booster Gold. We've heard nothing more since and the trades haven't shared any updates on the planned TV series.
After posting a fan-made image with Nanjiani pictured alongside Booster, Gunn was quick to point out that his sharing it wasn't meant to confirm any casting reports.

2025 is set to be a significant year for the Dcu, which is built on the foundations of the former Dceu. Although Creature Commandos will be the first release, both James Gunn and Peter Safran have emphasized that the upcoming Superman movie marks the true beginning of the Dcu.
While details about the plot remain scarce, set leaks and official announcements reveal an impressive cast. Notably, Gunn has “borrowed” several actors from rival Marvel projects.
As a result, we’ve compiled a summary of all the ‘Superman’ actors who have previously appeared in Marvel projects.
1. Frank Grillo – Rick Flag Sr (Dcu) / Crossbones (MCU)
Frank Grillo is best known for his role as the villain Crossbones in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame. The actor has openly admitted that he nearly got fired by Marvel multiple times for leaking information.

2025 will be a huge year for Dcu, a newly established cinematic universe on the remnants of the former Dceu. Despite ‘Creature Commandos’ releasing first, both Gunn and Safran stated in the past that the upcoming ‘Superman’ movie is the true start of the Dcu.
Not much is known about the movie plot-wise, but thanks to the set leaks and official announcements we know that the cast is pretty huge. What’s even better is that Gunn “borrowed” quite a few actors from the rival Marvel projects.
Due to this, we decided to summarize all ‘Superman’ actors that at one point appeared in Marvel projects.
1. Frank Grillo – Rick Flag Sr (Dcu) / Crossbones (MCU)
Frank Grillo portrayed a notable villain Crossbones in ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ The actor famously stated that he almost got fired by Marvel a lot of times due to constantly leaking information.

David Corenswet was seen this year as the antagonist in Twisters, and while audiences new to him got a sense of his physique as his height allowed him to tower over his co-stars, he would later put on the necessary muscle to become the Man of Steel in James Gunn‘s Dcu film Superman. Variety reports that Corenswet recently appeared on the Manly Things (Sort of) podcast, where he spoke of his Kryptonian transformation.
Corenswet explained, “I wasn’t 238 (pounds) when we started shooting. I was 238 at my max. I didn’t fit into any of my pants.” The new Kal-El actor spoke candidly about getting used to the new weight and he joked about his realization that he had become a 2Xl shirt size when he attended the table read for Superman. He stated, “That was at the peak of my bulk. And then I slowly lost weight before we started shooting.

Superman star David Corenswet recently appeared on the Manly Things (Sort Of) podcast and while he couldn't say much about his role as the Dcu's Man of Tomorrow, the actor did detail his physical transformation.
Becoming Superman is no easy feat for an actor and he told the hosts, "I wasn't 238 [pounds] when we started shooting. I was 238 at my max. I didn’t fit into any of my pants."
Coresnwet added that it was difficult to maintain his peak weight during production and admitted that his initial transformation "didn't feel great" because getting used to all that extra weight was a challenge.
In fact, it was during a table read for Superman that he realised he'd bulked up to a 2Xl Champion sweatshirt!

Superman wrapped shooting earlier this summer, leaving filmmaker James Gunn close to a year for post-production. Cameras may have stopped rolling, but Deadline brings word today that Alan Tudyk has joined the cast.
While his role has not been disclosed, the actor is already playing Creature Commandos' Doctor Phosphorus so may show up as a live-action version of the Task Force M character.
However, given Tudyk's long list of voiceover roles, we're going to take a wild guess and suggest he could be lending his voice to the Green Lantern Corps' Ch'p (a talking alien squirrel).
Tudyk has a long list of credits to his name but Superman is far from the only big project he has on the horizon. We'll hear him in Moana 2 later this year and then in Andor season 2 as K2-so next summer.

Alan Tudyk is one of those actors who can do anything, from stone-cold killers to crime-solving aliens to slow-witted roosters, and now he might be joining Superman on the big screen. According to Deadline, Tudyk may have a secret role in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie. Exactly who the actor might be playing is being kept under wraps, but it could be anything, even a voice role.
Tudyk is actually already a part of the new DC Universe. He voices Doctor Phosphorus in Creature Commandos. The rest of the cast of the upcoming animated series includes Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Indira Varma as The Bride, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, and Steve Agee as John Economos, and Sean Gunn as Weasel. The series tracks a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions deemed too dangerous for humans.

In an exciting new development, Alan Tudyk has reportedly been cast in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film. Details about Tudyk’s specific role are still under wraps. Gunn, who co-wrote and is producing the movie, recently finished principal photography.
Tudyk has experience in both live-action and voice roles. He has lent his talents to several DC animated shows, such as Doctor Phosphorus in Gunn’s Creature Commandos and Clayface in Harley Quinn. Tudyk and Gunn also worked together previously on the web series Con Man.
David Corenswet will take on the role of Clark Kent and his famous superhero alter ego. Rachel Brosnahan was cast as Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor, and Skyler Gisondo portrays Jimmy Olsen. Nathan Fillion was chosen for Guy Gardner, and Wendell Pierce will play Daily Planet editor Perry White.
With its star-packed lineup and Gunn at the helm, anticipation is high for the new Superman film.

Exclusive: James Gunn’s Superman may be wrapped, but we’re hearing that Alan Tudyk is also part of the mass ensemble pic in an undisclosed role.
Tudyk is already playing the voice of nuclear plant meltdown borne villain, Doctor Phosphorus, in Gunn’s upcoming Max animated series, Creature Commandos, which technically kicks off the first part of the DC Boss’ phase one, “Gods and Monsters”. Tudyk also voices Clayface in the Max animated series, Harley Quinn.
As far as Gunn and Tudyk’s previous collaborations prior to Superman, Gunn starred in an episode of Tudyk’s Vimeo series, Con Man which ran from 2015-2017.

It's no secret that James Gunn is a huge comic book fan. In fact, since he was first named DC Studios co-ceo, he's done more to promote those than anyone during the Dceu era of storytelling (several titles he's hyped on social media have quickly sold out).
Bleeding Cool is a very reliable source of intel for comic book news and brings word today that the Superman writer and director is planning to pen his own comic for a 2025 release.
These rumblings come out of Baltimore Comic-Con from "[a] senior comic book industry executives who should be in a position to know such things." Neither Gunn nor DC Comics responded to the site when asked to comment.
While there's no word on who would be the focus of this mystery title, they speculate that it could be a Superman comic written by Gunn with artwork by DC President, Publisher and Cco Jim Lee.

We recently shared a photo of a Superman cast and crew wrap gift featuring the Man of Tomorrow, Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Lex Luthor. While not "official" artwork, it was created by someone involved in the movie and is thereby likely a good indication of what we'll see on screen.
Today, we see the rest of the character designs and that means getting a first glimpse at Hawkgirl's wings, Metamorpho, and Eve Teschmacher's colourful pink attire. Also pictured are Jimmy Olsen and The Engineer, two characters we spotted on set.
The fact their costumes match what we saw in those photos all but confirms this artwork is based on official material the crew member has seen while working on Superman.
Anthony Carrigan's Metamorpho was the only Justice League International member we didn't get to see on set, but it's clear James Gunn is sticking to the comic books here.

DC Studios co-ceo and Superman director James Gunn has once again shared a few Dcu updates on his social media accounts. However, the Shazam! Fury of the Gods fans among you may be disappointed.
Asked whether that movie is Dcu canon based on previous comments he's made, Gunn reiterated, "[You] don't need to be confused. It's not canon. I don't know now or then what Harcourt or Economos have to do with the Justice Society."
The filmmaker was never happy about the characters being thrown into projects like Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Black Adam, so we're not exactly shocked he plans to now ignore those scenes.
Gunn was also asked whether Creature Commandos or Superman should be considered an introduction to the new Dcu, prompting him to respond, "I think both of them as individual stories that are a part of an overall universe. They both exist for their own sake.

There's a huge amount of intrigue surrounding James Gunn's plans for the Dcu and, this week, the decision to potentially cast Avengers: Infinity War star Josh Brolin as Hal Jordan in HBO's Lanterns has raised eyebrows among fans.
The 56-year-old actor isn't exactly who the majority expected to play the iconic Green Lantern Corps member; now, though, scooper Daniel Richtman has shared some rumoured insights into DC Studios' approach to the character.
Apparently, "they're eyeing Josh Brolin because their vision for Hal Jordan is to have him as an older, gruff, no-nonsense mentor to a younger and reckless John Stewart. And as we know, Brolin excels at playing the grumpy type."
That sounds very much in line with what we'd expected and it's clear now that Gunn has some very specific plans for the Dcu's Hal.

With DC undergoing reconstruction and MCU cutting down on its slate for this year, 2024 has been a pretty quiet year when it comes to Cbm and major franchise releases in general. However, 2025 seems to be a total contrast, as apart from David Corenswet’s Superman, a plethora of releases from other big franchises are also lined up, including Fantastic Four and now Jurrasic Park.

The as-yet untitled Superman movie recently finished filming under Gunn’s direction. He has described his vision for exploring Superman’s struggle to balance his Kryptonian origins with his human upbringing. The movie aims to showcase themes of truth, justice,...

Gunn posted the photo of Gisondo giving an enthusiastic thumbs-up, with Jimmy’s signature swoop on display and a warm smile.

If you've watched Twisters (and you really should because it's a blast), then chances are you spotted Superman star David Corenswet. And he's playing...well, let's just say his character isn't exactly likeable!
The way he towers over his co-stars in that movie is a pretty good indication he'll make a fine Man of Steel - physically, at least - and we now have footage of the Twisters cast celebrating the news that Corenswet had joined the Dcu.
Filmed during production of the Twister sequel, it sees the likes of Glen Powell and Katy O'Brian absolutely losing their sh*t for the actor's good news and the whole thing is incredibly wholesome. That's nice to see given what Hollywood can be like for rising stars such as Corenswet.
Earlier this summer, Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung said, "[David] was doing some auditions for 'Superman' while we were filming, and...

Zack Snyder explained why he had to kill off Jimmy Olsen in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as this remains a massive debate among fans. The character, in the comics, is a photojournalist from The Daily Planet who is pals with Clark Kent and Lois Lane.

When Olsen was introduced, the viewers expected he’d have more significance in the movie, but he was immediately removed as the story unfolded and revealed he’s a CIA operative. Fans need not worry anymore because James Gunn will correct this in his upcoming Superman film.
Zack Snyder Sheds Light On Jimmy Olsen’s Death
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was one of the most controversial DC installments helmed by Zack Snyder. While it is a commercial hit, the critical reviews were quite harsh. In fact, it only received a disappointing 29% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The live-action world of DC comics is forever going to change, or so the fans believe, after James Gunn took over the reins of the DC franchise. Earlier steered by Zack Snyder, fans are excited to see more ‘comic-book accurate’ versions of their favorite characters and stories in live-action.

James Gunn’s DC universe is currently undergoing major reconstruction and reorientation with the comic universe’s mainframe being surgically fixed after the past 11 years’ worth of trauma. Among the central triarchy, Superman rises to the occasion before the rest as David Corenswet takes on the mantle passed down from the oh-so-controversial Henry Cavill.

To match James Gunn’s personal ambition, Superman is set to get a most faithful adaptation in live-action with Corenswet already building himself in the image of his comic counterpart. Meanwhile, the director and CEO of DC Studios whips out a sink-or-swim version of the studio’s new chapter that will determine whether the DC cinematic universe will survive in this era of Superhero fatigue.

It's the dawn of a new day in the DC Universe, with James Gunn's upcoming movie "Superman" introducing a new version of the titular Man of Steel, played this time around by David Corenswet. This reset is particularly important for Jimmy Olsen, the fresh-faced photojournalist and cub reporter who works alongside Clark Kent and Lois Lane at the Daily Planet. The most recent movie version of Jimmy was introduced briefly in "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" as a CIA operative (played by Michael Cassidy), only to be killed off almost immediately.
Now, through the magic of a soft franchise reboot, Jimmy will be reborn in "Superman" -- played this time around by Skyler Gisondo. To celebrate the 83rd anniversary of Jimmy Olsen's first (named) appearance in DC Comics, Gunn shared a first look of Gisondo in the role. He certainly has the perfect dimpled smile to play Jimmy,...

Today marks 83 years since Jimmy Olsen made his DC Comics debut and Superman writer and director James Gunn has shared two new shots of Skyler Gisondo's version of the character.
One was released on X and the other on Instagram; the actor is wearing the same costume we saw in set photos, suggesting that will be his main look throughout the duration of this movie.
The actor certainly looks the part and is best known for roles in Licorice Pizza, Booksmart, Vacation, The Righteous Gemstones, and Santa Clarita Diet.
It's been a while since we've seen Clark Kent's friendship with Jimmy explored on screen. With Gunn - a huge comic book fan - in charge of the Dcu, that finally looks set to change.

Superman wrapped production last month, but the film’s release is still nearly a year away. This will give Superman director James Gunn enough time to perfect the VFX during the post-production process, and it’s all by design.
On Threads, a fan brought up the plight of overworked VFX artists who are forced to work very tight deadlines in order to get a film out on time. Now that James Gunn is running DC Studios, things will be different, with Superman getting a lengthy post-production schedule.
“If you do some research you’ll see my films have always taken a different approach and I’ve always given my VFX artist-collaborators time to do their jobs properly, and the respect they deserve,” Gunn wrote. “And the quality of the VFX in those films is uniformly great because of it (and because my friends at Weta and Framestore and Ilm and...

Filmmaker James Gunn spent quite a bit of time in the MCU directing the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy (or "quadrilogy" if you could The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special).
As new DC Studios co-ceo, it appears he's learned from both that and a 2023 which saw him forced to make big cuts to Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and help reshape The Flash, a failed blockbuster he'd bizarrely describe as one of the "greatest" superhero movies ever made.
Taking to Threads, Gunn shared insights into how he's approaching VFX and why Superman, which wrapped shooting in July, will be in post-production for close to a year.

Dcu’s Hawkgirl actress Isabela Merced’s choice of words while discussing James Gunn’s much-hyped Superman project has concerned many fans. She used the word “funny” to describe the film, which stuck out like a sore thumb for fans. Fans have made it clear that they don’t want another funny DC project like Peacemaker from the director.

Most major blockbusters involve some degree of reshoots, be they one day or even several months, but it sounds like James Gunn isn’t expecting to do any on his upcoming Superman movie.
Production on Superman wrapped up last month, but James Gunn told a fan on Threads that there’s still a lot of work to be done. “Heck no. Once you’re done shooting you’ve only just begun!” Gunn wrote. “Still lots of editing, VFX, sound, and scoring to be done!” When another fan mentioned that reshoots might add a lot of time to the post-production process, Gunn responded, “I don’t know. Film director James Gunn has found a more efficient way to make blockbuster movies. Gunn, currently working on the upcoming Superman movie reboot, does extensive preparation before filming begins. This allows him to film all that is needed with minimal reshoots later on.
Gunn shared his process on social media recently. He said for his last two superhero films, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Suicide Squad, he completed just one day of reshoots combined. This is unlike typical big budget films that often spend weeks doing additional filming after the main shoot.
Gunn attributes his success to strong planning. He does not start filming until the whole script is complete and approved. Gunn also handpicks talented actors and staff. Extensive auditioning and background checks help ensure the right person for each role.

In a lengthy new post on Threads, filmmaker James Gunn has revealed that he doesn't anticipate helming any reshoots for his upcoming Superman reboot.
That may sound like a bold proclamation (what if test audiences don't like it?!) but Gunn's track record speaks for itself, something that's evident from him pointing out what happened while shooting his last two movies.
According to Gunn, "I've done a total of one day of reshoots on my past two films combined." As a reminder, those were Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Suicide Squad, two incredibly successful blockbusters which have 82% and 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively.
These insights from the DC Studios co-ceo are fascinating as they unpack his creative process. We also see how his methodical approach to the movies he writes and directs means extensive reshoots, which typically rework movies during post-production, aren't required.

James Gunn confirmed yesterday evening that production on Superman has officially wrapped. Now, the reboot enters post-production, giving DC Studios close to a year to make sure this movie kicks off the new Dcu in style.
Now, we have a new look at David Corenswet suited up as the Man of Tomorrow on a collectable card which we believe was handed out to members of the crew as a wrap gift.
It appears to have been signed by Corenswet (whose signature is accompanied by a roughly drawn Superman logo) and is clearly meant to be a trading card of some sort. However, we do have to question the decision to name the hero one of "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" seeing as that phrasing is typically used to refer to The Avengers!

In a social media post, the filmmaker thanked everyone involved in the making of the superhero film and shared a photo from the first week of shooting in Svalbard, Norway.
“And that’s a wrap,” Gunn posted on Instagram. “God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life.”
He continued, “I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. María Gabriela De Faría, whose credits include Deadly Class and The Exorcism of God, plays a villain known as The Engineer, a member of The Authority, in director James Gunn’s Superman, which is set to reach theatres on July 11th, 2025. If you watched Twisters this past weekend then you may have noticed Superman star David Corenswet towering over his co-stars!
The actor wasn't playing the most likeable character but, if this was your first exposure to him, it's fair to say he has a suitably chiselled jawline to, visually at least, put a convincing spin on the Dcu's new Man of Steel.
While work on James Gunn's reboot continues, it's no longer shooting out in the open and that's put a quick end to a steady stream of revealing set photos. In the meantime, the filmmaker has taken to Instagram to share some new artwork of Corenswet's Superman.
He says this is "from the camera department," meaning it could be something they created just for fun rather than being an "official" piece of promo art for the movie or anything along those lines. Still, they've been up close and personal with the Dcu's Superman,...

While The Boys put Jack Quaid (the son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan) on the map, the actor has proven that there's more to him than just Hughie thanks to memorable performances in the likes of Scream, Oppenheimer, and Star Trek: Lower Decks.
He's also joined the DC Universe in recent years as the voice of the Man of Steel in Adult Swim's popular My Adventures With Superman. The show has exceeded expectations since launching and Quaid is frequently praised for his take on the hero.
Unfortunately, that wasn't enough to secure him the role title role in DC Studios and James Gunn's live-action Superman reboot.
Talking to Josh Horowitz, Quaid confirmed he auditioned but admitted to not getting particularly far in the process. "I think everyone did,'" he says in the video below. "If you fit a bill...it’s like just one of those things.

James Gunn provided yet another update on Superman — previously known as Superman: Legacy.
The film, which stars David Corenswet in the title role and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, is “getting close” to being done with filming after wrapping its six-week Cleveland shoot this week.
The director and co-head of DC Studios has been sharing updates with his fans on Threads, where he posted a lengthy, er, thread on the social media platform, praising the city of Cleveland for its hospitality while they were in production.
“#Cleveland – today we are leaving you after six amazing weeks of shooting,” he wrote. “From the moment we first came here on a scout a tad less than a year ago and Terminal Tower was lit up with the colors of Superman, I knew you were a special place. I would walk down your streets and someone would stop me and tell me how...
