Filmmaker Eric Branco, best known for his work as a cinematographer on films like Clemency and The 40-Year-Old Version, has signed on to make his feature directorial debut with the drama Silent Partner for Black Man Films
Based on a short film of the same name, Silent Partner is written by actor and Black Man Films co-founder Roderick Lawrence, James J. Johnson, and Branco. The pic follows a Black attorney in New York who is thrust into a stand-your-ground case by a senior partner. He is asked to defend a white woman who has murdered a Black teen. The story focuses on the attorney’s moral struggle, his relationship with his wife, and the black professional experience of microaggressions in the workplace and systemic racism in the justice system. The film began production last week in New York City. Cast features Roderick Lawrence, Susan Heyward, Eric Nelsen, and Jeff Perry.

"You followed him? He could've killed you!" Vertical has revealed an official trailer for a dark crime thriller titled The Good Mother, from director Miles Joris-Peyrafitte. Despite the two big names leading this cast, it's doesn't seem to be getting the most hyped up release next month. The film follows a journalist who, after the murder of her estranged son, forms an unlikely alliance with his pregnant girlfriend to track down those responsible for his death. Together, they confront a world of drugs and corruption in the seedy underbelly of a small city in upstate New York. Hilary Swank stars as Marissa, the vengeful journalist, with Olivia Cooke as Paige, plus Dilone, Hopper Penn, Norm Lewis, Karen Aldridge, and Jack Reynor. This reminds me of McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, about a mom turning vicious to get revenge on whoever killed her child. Looks extra dark. "Don't I get...

More than three years after its last installment, Season 4 of Noah Hawley’s anthology series Fargo bowed in September on FX and moved the action to 1950s Kansas City. That’s where we meet Chris Rock’s Loy Cannon and Jason Schwartzman’s Josto Fadda, a pair of gangland kingpins who square off across racial and family divides.
The season kicks off with the premiere episode “Welcome to the Alternate Economy,” written by Hawley, whose begins with a history lesson of American organized crime while setting up the key element of the 11-episode run: the two crime families are trading sons, a method intended to keep the peace.
That’s all in just the first few pages of Episode 401, the latest installment in Deadline’s It Starts On the Page, a series that highlights the scripts that are serving as the creative backbones of the TV awards season. The scripts...

“Fargo” showrunner Noah Hawley “wanted to make sure that he had a writers room that could represent those perspectives the best that you can,” explains writer/producer Scott Wilson about season four of the FX anthology series, which tells the story of a mob war between Black and Italian syndicates in Kansas City in the 1950s. “No one person can represent an entire group, but it’s ideal to have as many perspectives as you can, particularly if you’re writing about a specific group of people.” We talked with Wilson as part of our “FX Writing for Inclusion” panel. [Editor’s Note: The following interview contains spoilers for “Fargo” Season 4, Episode 11, “Storia Americana,” including the ending.]
When Loy Cannon dies, he’s the only one who doesn’t see it coming.
Standing on his porch, having just negotiated a peaceful (if far from advantageous) agreement with the Fadda crime family, Loy (Chris Rock) stops to silently admire his happy children playing inside.
“He has this moment where he thinks, ‘Oh, I thought I needed more power to keep my family safe, but now that I’ve lost my power, I think we can be a happy, healthy family,'” showrunner Noah Hawley said. “In that moment of victory, when he thinks this might be the best thing for them, is when the knife goes in.”
Zelmare Roulette (played by Karen Aldridge) is the one doing the stabbing, but to the audience, Loy’s fate was sealed the second he picked up those oranges. Ever since Vito Corleone’s iconic shooting in “The Godfather,...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains details about tonight’s Fargo season 4 finale “Storia Americana” on FX
Crime doesn’t pay, and it never did for mobsters.
While we were bound to see the death of one big Kansas City mafia kingpin at the end of Fargo‘s season 4, specifically Jason Schwartzman’s wet-behind-the-ears Josto Fadda (who was killed by the hands of his own family no thanks to his snitch mistress Oraetta Mayflower played by the sublime Jessie Buckley), there was always hope that Chris Rock’s Loy Cannon would see better days and the dominance of his 1950s Kansas City empire.
After an acerbic code of loyalty between crime families that entailed trading their sons in an effort to keep the peace, Loy finally saw his son Satchel (who was in the custody of the Faddas) return home. But the sins of the father, are the sins of the son,...

This Fargo article contains spoilers for the season 4 finale.
Fargo season 4’s finale, “Storia Americana,” wraps up an uneven season of FX’s crime series about as effectively as one could have hoped. The hour is thematically consistent, if a little short (which may have had something to do with the final two episodes’ abbreviated Covid-19 production schedule). In true Fargo fashion, the season ends with plenty of our main characters dead. Josto Fadda (Jason Schwartzman) is killed for not properly realizing the power of his own family (and for a simple misunderstanding with killer nurse Oraetta Mayflower), while Loy Cannon (Chris Rock) is killed for underestimating the power of another family.
All in all, “Storia Americana” tells a rather complete story…or storia. But then, Fargo showrunner and this episode’s writer Noah Hawley decides to give viewers one more post-credits scene for the road. The post-credit scene in...

This has a major spoiler so don’t read until you’ve seen Fargo season 4 episode 8 “The Nadir.”
Fargo’s season 4, episode 8, “The Nadir,” contains an allegorical reference to a true crime occurrence. It appears Loy Cannon (Chris Rock) dropped dime on the two lady criminals he felt responsible for, Zelmare Roulette (Karen Aldridge) and Swanee Capps (Kelsey Asbille). He thought he was turning two tickets to Philadelphia into a one-way ride to Palookaville. They turned it into a grand exit. The conclusion of this sequence points to a conspiracy. Put these together and you have the Union Station Massacre.
In the opening disclaimer of every Fargo, we read how the names have been changed on real events. In this case, that includes the genders, body count, and arc of the gunfight at Kansas City’s main transportation hub, the Union Railway Station. The real events of the Union Station...

Fargo Season 4 Episode 2
They say chaos is a ladder, but too many people may be trying to climb the rungs in “The Land of Taking and Killing.” Donatello Fadda’s death is a tragedy for Justo and his family, but it’s also an opening, not only for Loy Cannon and his men, but for family black sheep Gaetano, Justo’s brother. Like a tiger plucked from the wild and dropped into Kansas City, Gaetano is sniffing out weakness, looking to strike and stake his claim. His arrival could cause the distraction that Loy needs, or escalate tensions into an all-out war.
With his bulging eyes and visibly simmering rage, Salvatore Esposito is a magnetic presence whenever he’s on screen and exactly the right kind of wild card to shake things up. Gaetano claims that he killed on behalf of Benito Mussolini until the war turned,...

This Fargo review contains no spoilers.
Time has become an odd thing to track throughout the coronavirus pandemic, but it still seems hard to believe that it’s been over three years since the last season of Noah Hawley’s Fargo wrapped on FX. Fargo season 3 was often ponderous, existential, and meandering. It also routinely gave off a vibe that Hawley was growing tired of the Midwest, Coen-worshipping box that he had placed himself in. Perhaps time away from the anthology series allowed Hawley to return with a bit more energy, but also a narrower focus. Instead of a twisty-turny story fueled by happenstance and bad luck, Fargo season 4 is a ‘50s-set, pulpy tale of two warring Kansas City gangs. Some may call this season’s story timely, but it would be relevant in any era of American history. This is a tale of immigrants, race, and what it means to be an American.

“You know why America loves a crime story? Because America is a crime story,” mob boss Josto Fadda (Jason Schwartzman) argues in the fourth season of Fargo. We are a nation built on stolen land, with the labor of stolen people. And perhaps because of this, as Josto notes, we tend to root for the takers in these stories, rather than the innocent victims being taken.

It may have taken a while after a Covid-caused production shutdown, but Fargo‘s intriguing, Chris Rock-fronted fourth season has finally procured a premiere, with FX having officially set a September release date.
Fargo Season 4 will premiere on FX on Sunday, September 27 at 10 p.m. Et/Pt, on which the first two episodes will air. Subsequent episodes will premiere on the same Sunday timeslot individually on a weekly basis. Streamers will be interested to know that each new episode will hit Hulu the day after their FX premieres.
The release date announcement occurs after the Chicago production of Fargo was one of several to be shut down back in March. Despite having only two episodes left to shoot, the shutdown resulted in a delay to the fourth season’s original April 19 release date; a move likely designed to avoid a situation similar to shows like AMC’s The Walking Dead...

Exclusive: Karen Aldridge (The Get Down) is set as a series regular in the upcoming fourth installment of FX’s anthology series Fargo, headlined by Chris Rock. It’s slated to premiere in 2020.
Created, written, directed and executive produced by Noah Hawley, who also serves as showrunner, Season 4 is set in 1950 in Kansas City, Mo. The locale serves as the crossroads and collisions of two migrations — Southern Europeans from countries like Italy, and African Americans who left the south in great numbers to escape Jim Crow, both fighting for a piece of the American dream. In Kansas City, two criminal syndicates — one Italian, led by Donatello Fadda, one African American, led by Loy Cannon (Rock) — have struck an uneasy peace, which the heads of both families have cemented by trading their youngest sons.

Starz has decided to cancel Boss after two seasons on the air. The Kelsey Grammer series won't be returning for a third season but viewers may still get some resolution.
Boss revolves around Chicago Mayor Tom Kane (Grammer), a powerful man who struggles to stay on top while secretly battling a debilitating brain disease. Others in the cast include Karen Aldridge, Connie Nielsen, Kathleen Robertson, Martin Donovan, Jeff Hephner, and Hannah Ware.
The cable channel renewed the show for a second season a month before the series even premiered. Had they waited, they might have cancelled it instead. The ratings for the first season were underwhelming and the cast and crew knew that season two would have to do better for the show to survive.
It didn't. The second season averaged 360,000 viewers and a 0.1 rating in the demo. The cancellation...

This political drama TV series revolves around Tom Kane (Kelsey Grammer), the powerful mayor of Chicago. He's known for getting things done, regardless of the moral cost. Quite simply, he's the most effective mayor in recent history.

Determined to remain in charge, Kane conceals the disease from everyone around him -- except his neurologist, Doctor Ella Harris (Karen Aldridge).

I subscribed to the Starz cable network two years ago mainly because it was the only place I could see Robert Rodriquez and Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse in its original unedited form and in HD. That changed soon after when the picture was finally released on home video, but I still kept my subscription due to the network's slate of original programming. Truth be told, Starz had nothing on HBO or even Showtime, just a set of interesting shows that included Party Down, Head Case and an adaptation of the 2004 film Crash. Things got mighty interesting with last years debut of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, a sword and sandal epic that felt like a bloodier knockoff of 300 and Gladiator yet captivated audiences with its unrestrained sex and violence. Spartacus won't return until January which leaves room for yet another series, this time a compelling political drama featuring none other than Kelsey Grammer.
