Trent Reznor, formerly the frontman of the alternative rock group Nine Inch Nails, and fellow How to Destroy Angels band member Atticus Ross went on to share the Best Original Score Oscar for their work on David Fincher's Facebook movie The Social Network. After Reznor's Oscar win, "I want to thank you like an animal" became a Twitter hit – in reference to a similar-sounding line found in the Nine Inch Nails' 1994 song "Closer." Given the genre cred of Simon Pegg and the ascendance of Rosamund Pike, I approached Hector and the Search for Happiness with a certain level of curiosity. I was unfamiliar with the original novel by French author Francois Lelord and somehow missed the film’s release back in September. 20th Century Home Entertainment resolved that with the release today of the film on DVD.
In short, the film is about a psychiatrist, Hector (Pegg), who wants to shake up his tedious life. He doesn’t feel like he’s good at his job or able to help people, and laments to his girlfriend Clara (Pike) that he has yet to sample the very experience he recommends to his clients. As a result, he goes walkabout, seeking to taste life and find happiness. Then things happen.
It’s a charming premise and certainly well-trod territory but one expects, well, more from the story,...

For 114-minutes Hector and the Search for Happiness walks the tightrope between nausea and uplift. A movie whose logline is “a psychiatrist searches the globe to find the secret of happiness,” seens congentinally constructed to evoke such mixed emotions. And so Maria von Heland and Peter Chelsom’s uneven screenplay beats on with a confluence of stirring and sickening sequences — its unrelenting optimism alternately admirable and revolting. That said, there is something about Chelsom’s film, his first since the Hannah Montana: The Movie in 2009, that occasionally has the power to win you over. The power lies in Simon Pegg, playing the eponymous psychiatrist who has recently become disenchanted with his life. Professional and maritally, Hector has been going through the motions. “Tidy” and “uncomplicated” are the descriptors his partner, Clara (Rosamund Pike) uses. The two appear to be content, which perhaps is better than being discontent, but is almost certainly more boring. The...

Hector and the Search for Happiness
Directed by Peter Chelsom
Written by Peter Chelsom, Tinker Lindsay, and Maria von Heland
USA, 2014
There’s a burgeoning subgenre of films about people in existential crisis setting out on a globe spanning adventure to find themselves, to figure out how to really live. These movies are ostensibly inspirational, but for several reasons, they often play out as somewhat depressing. For one thing, they seem to suggest that all it takes to feel alive is a costly globe-spanning adventure. Even more troublingly, they tend to turn the problems and wonders of the rest of the world into just more glib lessons for their heroes to learn. To the ranks of films like Eat, Pray, Love and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, we can now add Hector and the Search for Happiness.

There is not a cynical or mean-spirited moment in Peter Chelsom's new film "Hector and the Search For Happiness," and the film's observations about life are in some ways so direct, so fundamental, that it would be easy to shrug it off and laugh at its sincerity. Happiness is a subject I've been thinking about quite a bit this year. At 44, I find it elusive, temporary. I've upended my life this year, moving out of my house, negotiating a divorce, building a new life to share with my kids, and even exploring the notion of new love, and all of it has been life-altering and shattering and scary and exhilarating, and above all else, necessary. Completely and totally necessary. When I was a young man, I saw happiness as something that landed on you, something that was simply a by-product of living life. I took happiness for granted, and...

Simon Pegg tackles the meaning of life as the eponymous wanderer and/or wonderer in an adaptation of a book by French psychiatrist François Lelord. Hector and the Search for Happiness is part fable, part self-help manual with echoes of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, but like that film, there's a considerable gap between its deeply profound objective and the soft handling.
Hector is subject to gentle teasing for taking life too seriously, but he isn't a purely comic character and that's unfortunate for Pegg who usually gets laughs playing pompous idiots. He's much less compelling being moody and teary-eyed, especially because he doesn't have much to complain about. Hector is a successful psychiatrist who lives in a plush London home with a lovely girlfriend,...

Ben Stiller went searching for a more satisfying existence in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and now it's Simon Pegg's turn Hector and the Search for Happiness, a new film slated to hit the United Kingdom this fall. If you follow esteemed (and occasionally steam-driven) thespian type Simon Pegg on Twitter, you’ll already know that Toni Collette is aboard rom-com Hector And The Search For Happiness. But Deadline’s story at least breaks the news that Jean Reno, Stellan Skarsgård, Desiree Zurowski and Jakob Davies have all joined the cast. The film, which already boasts Pegg, Rosamund Pike and Christopher Plummer, is shooting now in Canada under the direction of Peter Chelsom. Pegg plays the titular Hector, an eccentric London psychiatrist who hits a crisis when he can’t help any of his patients to get any happier and decides to go off on a search for the secret of happiness.Pike will be Hector’s girlfriend, while Plummer is aboard to play a UCLA professor who specialises in Happiness Studies. Not much is known about the other roles, though Davies is apparently playing Hector as a lad.
